By James Montgomery Andrew Jenks speaks with young voters in “Power Of 12: Our Voice” Photo: MTV News On Tuesday, MTV will officially launch the Power of 12 , our coverage of the 2012 election, beginning with the premiere of the documentary “Our Voice.” The doc follows filmmaker Andrew Jenks as he crosses the country — and hits the campaign trail — to speak with young voters about the issues that concern them most, and the Republican candidates that are vying for their support. “Our Voice” will debut Tuesday at 4:54 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. And if you think you know everything about the concerns of the nation’s 45 million voters ages 18 to 29 (or the GOP hopefuls currently courting them), well, you’re in for an eye-opener. Because, as the 25-year-old behind MTV’s doc-style series “World of Jenks” told MTV News, he thought he did too. It was only when Jenks hit the road that he discovered how much he didn’t know. Check out a preview of ‘Power of 12: Our Voice’! “You read blogs or you watch the cable news, and you keep hearing that young voters are disenfranchised, that they don’t trust the system or the politicians,” Jenks said. “And sure, there’s a feeling [among young voters] that the rug has been pulled out from underneath them, but at the same time, the thing that I kept hearing when I’d talk to them is, ‘I’m optimistic.’ They’re concerned about the future of the country, but they’re convinced it’s not too late. People my age feel that they have the power to change the system, even if they think it’s broken. “When I first learned I’d be covering the Republican candidates, I was excited because I knew we’d be able to use this as a platform, to look at these candidates and ask, ‘How are you going to speak to us, the young voters?’ ” he continued. “Because for really the first time, we do kind of have the power. We are 45 million people and we can tilt the election. They have to listen to us and speak with us, because we have the leverage.” “Our Voice” — which features interviews with GOP candidates Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Ron Paul and more — is just the first phase of MTV’s Power of 12 campaign, which aims to inform and engage young voters and amplify their voices throughout the 2012 elections. Upcoming specials include “When I Was 22,” an MTV News documentary kicking off in early 2012 that gives viewers a unique look at the lives of presidential hopefuls. Candidates will look back on their own lives — back when they were 22 years old. Each episode will paint a portrait of the candidate at a younger age, focusing on their dreams, triumphs, setbacks and the moments of resiliency that ultimately shaped their world view. Additionally, “Fantasy Election ’12,” an online game similar to fantasy baseball and football fantasy league games, that allows users to draft a team of candidates pursuing the White House, Senate and House of Representatives and rack up points. The first-of-its-kind game also rewards players for getting involved in the electoral process — they’ll get extra points for registering to vote, “checking in” to town halls and debates, and discussing issues with friends. MTV News will begin its coverage of the election on the ground in Iowa and New Hampshire, with Jenks and MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway at the helm. Dr. Conrad Murray will be sentenced next Tuesday, and how much jail time he serves will depend on what a judge decides after hearing arguments from both the defense and prosecution – which will be poles apart as you might expect. The D.A. wants Michael Jackson’s former personal physician to spend the maximum possible four years in prison for his involuntary manslaughter conviction. Meanwhile, defense attorneys asked that he only receive probation. Prosecutors David Walgren and Deborah Brazil told Judge Michael Pastor that Murray showed no remorse for Jackson’s death and has blamed others instead. Moreover, he chose to slander the King of Pop both at trial and in the documentary he filmed during it, making a lenient sentence for the doctor inexcusable. The film does not portray MJ flatteringly. In one interview for it, Dr. Conrad Murray actually says, “I don’t feel guilty because I did not do anything wrong.” The maximum jail sentence isn’t the only thing the prosecution is seeking – they’re looking for damages of up to $100 million due to Jackson’s death. The defense for Murray, who is on suicide watch , begged to differ. Defense attorney Nareg Gourjian cited positive letters from Murray’s former patients and said, “There is no question that the death of his patient, Mr. Jackson, was unintentional, accidental and an enormous tragedy for everyone affected.” “Dr. Murray has been described as a changed, grief-stricken man, who walks around under a pall of sadness since the loss of his patient, Mr. Jackson.” Funny, his actions don’t exactly suggest that, do they?
No matter how many times you’ve seen a movie, you’ve never truly seen it unless you’ve seen it on the big screen. Cinema was created to be seen in a theater with a group of people. It’s an experience. An event. And with modern technology, that cultural legacy is slowly slipping away. Not at repertory theaters, though. Repertory theaters are theaters that primarily show classic movies the way they were… Broadcasting platform : Vimeo Source : /Film Discovery Date : 23/11/2011 00:00 Number of articles : 2
‘Michael Jackson and the Doctor’ will premiere on MSNBC. By Gil Kaufman Dr. Conrad Murray Photo: Al Seib/ Getty Images Just five days after his conviction on a felony count of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson , a documentary about Dr. Conrad Murray will air on MSNBC. The special, “Michael Jackson and the Doctor,” will include footage of Murray insisting that Jackson “begged and pleaded” for the surgical anesthetic propofol. It will hit the airwaves a few days after Murray settled into Los Angeles County Jail , where he is awaiting a November 29 sentencing hearing following his conviction. “He asked me, ‘Please, please, Dr. Conrad … I need some milk [propofol] so that I can sleep,” Murray says in the special, according to MSNBC . “If I don’t get any sleep today, I cannot perform, I cannot do anything.” After nearly 10 hours of deliberation, the jury in the Murray case came back with a unanimous guilty verdict, agreeing the doctor acted in a fashion that caused Jackson’s death. The seven-man, five-woman jury made the decision after 49 witnesses and some bruising testimony from prosecution experts lashing Murray, a cardiologist with clinics in Texas and Las Vegas who was recruited in 2009 by Jackson to help the then-50-year-old star stay healthy in the run-up to his planned 50-date comeback tour, This Is It. The prosecution brought a long list of medical experts and emergency-room doctors to the stand to testify that Murray had not followed proper procedure in dealing with Jackson when the singer was in distress on the morning of June 25, 2009. They also presented evidence that the care Murray provided for Jackson in the weeks and months leading up to that fateful morning were substandard or outside the bounds of legal and ethical requirements. The witnesses concluded that Murray lacked the proper monitoring equipment to administer the surgical anesthetic propofol to Jackson, an off-label use of the intravenously delivered drug that was reportedly employed to help chronic insomniac Jackson get to sleep. According to TMZ , Murray signed on for the documentary back in 2009 just after MJ’s death, and it will feature scenes of infighting among his defense team. The MSNBC special will chronicle the trial from the perspective of Murray — who did not take the stand in the trial — and his defense team, including an interview with the doctor about the day Jackson died, in which he shares details about his relationship with the pop star. In one segment, Murray describes Jackson’s appearance the morning he died, saying the singer looked “hysterical” and was so distraught he resembled his ghoulish alter-ego from the iconic 1982 “Thriller” video. Cameras have followed Murray and his defense team for two years in compiling the film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie’s distributor also acquired the rights to an exclusive interview Murray gave to British broadcaster Steve Hewlett on October 30, which is reportedly the only interview Murray plans to give on the trial. “I think in many ways, there were some mirror images in our lives,” Murray says about MJ in the special. “I’ve seen him cry so many times. He lived a life greater than a hundred years of pain of any human.” The verdict is in on the Conrad Murray trial. Stick with MTV News for continued coverage, updates and analysis on MTVNews.com .
