Ayanna Pressley Becomes First Black Woman To Represent Massachusetts In Congress

Read the rest here:

A yanna Pressley on Tuesday night officially became the first Black women to represent Massachusetts in Congress after officials confirmed her inevitable victory. The Democrat ran unchallenged in the general election after she unseated the incumbent, 10-term Rep. Michael Capuano, in a seemingly improbable upset that was all part of a larger “Blue wave” of Black women candidates winning primaries across the country. #BREAKING : Democrat Ayanna Pressley is projected to win in Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District, becoming the first African-American woman to be elected to Congress in state history. https://t.co/aEbQQMVVRY pic.twitter.com/OMj07Vx4RW — NPR Politics (@nprpolitics) November 7, 2018 Pressley, who was set to take over the Seventh Congressional District, told NewsOne shortly before her landmark victory in September that her years serving on the Boston City Council as its first African-American woman prepared her for this moment. She was especially nonplussed by how the Democratic Party hadn’t been rallying around her. “I was not surprised, mostly because I knew what I was embarking upon, that this would likely be a lonely, uphill, and bruising journey,” Pressley said at the time . “We’re doing something disruptive, challenging conventional wisdom, narratives and norms about who has a right to run, when you can run, and whether or not you can win.” Pressley was now on the precipice of stepping into the same congressional seat once occupied by John F. Kennedy ahead of his run for president in the 1960s. Providing some much needed political perspective in the era of Donald Trump, Pressley told the New York Times that she was cautiously optimistic for the future. “With our rights under assault, with our freedoms under siege, it’s not just good enough to see the Democrats back in power, but it matters who those Democrats are,” she said. “Change isn’t waiting any longer. We have arrived, change is coming and the future belongs to all of us.” SEE ALSO: The Power Of The Black Vote And How To Make Each One Count Stacey Abrams’ Unapologetically Black Journey To The Doorstep Of History [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3835357″ overlay=”true”]

Source: Miami Herald / Getty In the Trump era, desperate times call for desperate measures. The man in the White House made his way into office with vile language and insidious lies. So, unfortunately, no average candidate can weather the Trump years with mere principles alone. While Michelle Obama ‘s “they go low, we go high” phrase sounds cute, sometimes you have to master the art of the clapback. There are many levels to this. Some opt for the delicate or classy clapback, while others might go for a full-on dragging. Luckily, there’s a few midterm election candidates who find themselves somewhere in the middle of the clapback spectrum. While Twitter fingers are no reason to vote for anyone, electing a candidate who can snatch wigs in 280 characters or less might help you sleep better at night, along with their bomb platform. Hit the next pages to peep which candidates are already ahead of the game with the plans to change the country and the words to burn the haters!

C candidates were making their final pushes on Election Day eve to turn out the vote, with celebrities expected to help make the case to Floridians. In one of the most widely watched races in the nation, music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs was expected to lead a rally Monday night at Florida A&M University for Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum . See Also: Political Races To Watch In 2018 Midterm Elections Featuring Black Candidates “I am so proud to endorse Andrew Gillum, who will become the first Black governor of Florida,” Combs said in a video, underscoring that he’s not endorsing Gillum because he’s Black. “He’s running a campaign for the people. I’ve spoken to him at length. I believe in him — his focus, his ideas, what he stands for.” Diddy was scheduled to be joined by several other stars, including Tiffany Haddish  and Will Packer. Gillum continued to hold on to a slim lead in the polls, according to the NBC News/Marist survey released Monday. The Tallahassee mayor had an edge of four percentage points over former Rep. Ron DeSantis  , a Republican who has the full endorsement of President Donald Trump . Meanwhile, in Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams reiterated her dismissal of rival Brian Kemp ’s unsubstantiated claim that state Democrats may have hacked into computers that hold voter registration data. It was another example of Georgia Secretary of State Kemp’s “pattern of voter suppression,” she told “CBS This Morning” on Monday. Abrams, who could become the nation’s first African-American governor, planned to spend part of Monday campaigning in southwestern Georgia. Several high-profile politicians and celebrities have campaigned for Abrams, including former President Barack Obama, media legend Oprah Winfrey and rapper Common. This team knocked on 62,000 doors and made 100,000 phone calls on Sunday, with plans to repeat that effort on Election Eve. Delgado is part of the blue wave that Democrats hope will help them retake the House of Representatives. Republican John Faso currently holds New York’s 19th Congressional District seat, but Democrats believe they have a good chance to swing the district, which is 90 percent white, over to their side. Jalen Rose’s Detroit High School Has A 93 Percent Graduation Rate

I t’s been nine years since retired NBA star Jalen Rose opened the doors to a charter school that he created in Detroit and his effort to further education in the area has proven to be a success. According to Ebony , Rose’s school has a 93 percent graduation rate and a 100 percent college acceptance rate. Jalen Rose says In June, it will be the first time JRLA scholars that graduated from colleges across the country will have the opportunity to attend our graduation and speak to the graduates of our senior class. https://t.co/iWCaQoxBwN — EBONY MAGAZINE (@EBONYMag) October 28, 2018 The school—which is called the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy—was created for youth in the 9th through 12th grade, the news outlet writes. There are currently 400 students who attend the school. In an effort to ensure that students feel supported throughout their high school journey and after graduation, each student has a support group that is made up of current students and those who have graduated to help them stay on track. JRLA also provides students with leadership courses that delve into how to navigate real-life situations surrounding drugs, violence, and other issues that they may have to confront in their everyday lives. The school also emphasizes the importance of civic engagement and empowers its students to evoke change in their communities. JRLA is tuition-free and has an open enrollment. Rose says that he understands the essentiality of having access to a good education. “Education is a valuable tool that unlocks the future of so many young people, and the dynamics in our country have changed, which is [why I chose to] be the founder of a tuition-free public charter high school that gets zero state funding for the facility,” he told the news outlet. “It’s crucial for us to get our scholars out in the community to do charity work and to give them the life skills they will need to be successful in the endeavors that they have, and it’s more for us than just obviously the curriculum that’s required to graduate from school.” Rose isn’t the only celebrity who is using his platform and resources to further education. Almost a year after opening a charter school in Harlem, Sean Combs recently announced that he will donate $1 million for the creation of a school in the Bronx. Brian Kemp’s Latest Move Shows His ‘Desperation,’ Stacey Abrams Says

G eorgia’s Democratic nominee for governor Stacey Abrams dismissed her GOP rival Brian Kemp ’s latest maneuver as a “desperate” attempt to distract voters. SEE ALSO: Stacey Abrams’ Unapologetically Black Journey To The Doorstep Of History Appearing Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union with Jake Tapper,” the host Jake Tapper  informed Abrams that Kemp, who’s also Georgia secretary of state, opened an investigation of the Georgia Democratic Party into possible cybercrimes. Kemp reportedly alleges that state Democrats may have hacked into Georgia’s voter registration system. “This is a desperate attempt on the part of my opponent to distract people from the fact that two different federal judges found him derelict in his duty and forced him to allow absentee ballots to be counted,” she said after hearing about Kemp’s allegations for the first time. Abrams could make history on Tuesday as the nation’s first African-American woman governor. Kemp, who oversees the state’s election system, has tried to  use every trick in the book  to suppress the Black vote for the 2018 election. Former President  Jimmy Carter  asked Kemp to  recuse him to ensure a fair election . But Kemp continues to decline. A separate court upheld those two decisions on Friday . Meanwhile, a white supremacist group is suspected of sending out racist robocalls to an unknown number of Georgia voters, the Associated Press reported on Saturday. The automated calls reportedly included impersonations of Oprah Winfrey , who led a rally on Thursday for Abrams. An Idaho man named Scott Rhodes is believed to be behind the calls through his organization The Road to Power, which is also linked to racist robocalls targeting Tallahassee’s African-American Mayor Andrew Gillum who’s running for governor of Florida. The calls came days after President Donald Trump , who endorsed Kemp, called Abrams unqualified to be governor . “He’s wrong,” Abrams told CNN on Sunday, pointing to her academic and work background. Abrams noted that she was the Democratic leader in the Georgia House of Representative for seven years, a deputy city attorney and a successful businesswoman. “I think they are seeing the same numbers we’re seeing. Early voting is up dramatically,” Abrams stated. “We have a plan in place for remarkable turnout on Election Day…and I think they’re (Kemp and Trump) getting scared.” SEE ALSO: Mayor Andrew Gillum Temporarily Suspends Campaign After Shooting In Tallahassee Can Oprah Winfrey Help Stacey Abrams Win Georgia? Half-Naked Woman Crashes Through Cook Out Restaurant Ceiling

A 26-year-old woman burst through the ceiling and fell in a Tennessee fast food restaurant. What makes it extra strange is that she did so while half-naked. What makes this absolutely mind-boggling is that she did it twice . So, for context, Cook Out is a delicious fast food restaurant that offers burgers and barbeque. Earlier this week, a Cook Out employee called the police at about 10pm. (Cook Out generally stays open until 3am or 4am, which makes them a favored restaurant for partiers and night owls) According to the employee’s call, she saw a woman burstin through the ceiling tile. The woman was then able to pull herself up and retreat back into the ceiling. Officers responded to the call, and found some damage in the kitchen. Additionally, they found what appeared to be the ceiling woman’s wallet on the building’s roof. Police were still on the scene when the woman fell through the ceiling a second time. This time, she was unable to scramble back up, and attempted to exit the kitchen. Police apprehended the woman identified as Harley C. Morton. They also noticed that she was naked from the waste down. Morton was transported to jail and charged with criminal trespass, vandalism, and disorderly conduct. Most Cook Out locations do not have indoor dining areas. They rely upon drive-through and walk-up customers and may have picnic tables. This location did have a dining room, but there is tragically no known video of this woman’s bizarre emergence from the ceiling. “Fortunately,” a term that we use very loosely in this instance, this is not a unique phenomena. Wasn’t it just last September that a woman fell through the ceiling of a Mexican restaurant in California ? That fall through the ceiling was captured on video, and you can see that for yourself: So, the Cook Out incident probably looked something like this, but without the red ceiling. And instead of customers looking on in awe, you probably had Cook Out kitchen employees just an hour or two into their shift reacting. Some may have freaked out. Others almost certainly responded by thinking that it’s not the weirdest thing they’ve ever seen at Cook Out. In broad daylight, I once watched a man place his order at a walk-up window and then jog, while screaming repeatedly, around the building to access the bathroom facilities. He continued to scream, with short pauses, while in the bathroom. People go to Cook Out for the food and especially for their famous milkshakes, but seeing the absolute weirdest humans on Earth is part of the experience. We hope that this story provides entertainment and does not discourage anyone from visiting Cook Out. Their milkshakes are famous for a reason. Their food is also almost unbelievably cheap. Full disclosure, I did not even know that they had locations in Tennessee. (Also, I absolutely recommend their quesadillas) We hope that Ms. Morton is okay. There are still no indications of why she was in the ceiling. Hopefully, she is getting whatever help she needs. And hopefully Cook Out has already mended its ceiling and made their building a little less accessible.

Ariana Grande vs. Pete Davidson: Whose Side Should You Take In This Ugly Breakup?

From the very beginning, many of us predicted that the Ariana Grande-Pete Davidson romance wouldn't last very long . But even the most skeptical among us never thought it would flame out this quickly and in such spectacular fashion. Not only have Pete and Ariana broken up just months after announcing their engagement, it seems they're now venting their frustrations with one another publicly — Davidson through his comedy, and Grande via indignant tweets. It's a messy situation that gets more confusing with each new piece of information that comes to light. But fear not, reformed Grandson 'shippers, your friends at The Hollywood Gossip are here to help you make sense of this increasingly bitter breakup: 1. Downhill Fast Pete and Ariana’s relationship went from storybook romance to petty feud faster than you can say “Piggy Smallz.” 2. Surprise After Non-Surprise The breakup itself didn’t come as much of a shock. After all, couples who move as quickly as Pete and Ari tend to favor intensity over longevity. 3. A Bitter Split Fans were caught off-guard, however, when it became clear that Pete and Ariana did not part ways on amicable terms. 4. A Reversal of Opinion Ariana stans who were previously head-over-heels for both Pete Davidson and “pete davidson” (Grande’s song paying tribute to her then-boyfriend) now found themselves seething with rage toward the SNL comic. 5. Keeping Mum At first, Pete and Ariana kept the details of their split on the down-low. Now, however, the truth is out — and it’s unpleasant. 6. Getting Ugly On a promo for this week’s episode of SNL, Davidson made a joke about his short-lived relationship with Grande. View Slideshow

Donald Trump Evokes Game of Thrones on Twitter, Draws Rebuke from HBO

Donald Trump just ruined Game of Thrones. No, the President didn’t reveal any final season spoilers, although we’re pretty sure he wouldn’t hesitate to do so if it somehow meant Republicans would keep the House on Tuesday. But he did go ahead and use the show’s iconic tagline on Twitter today, making sure no one can ever think of it again without also thinking of our racist Commander-in-Chief. Here’s what we’re talking about: Game of Thrones arrived on the television scene in the summer of 2011 by warning its viewers that “Winter is Coming.” This was a nod to the dangerous White Walkers and how they would eventually breach The Wall and kill pretty much every human alive. (Don’t ask. Just Google or, better yet, go catch up Game of Thrones before it returns in mid-2019 at some point. The show is really good.) No three words are more associated with the most popular show of its era than these three. Winter is Coming . So… what did Trump just write on Twitter? In the legendary font of the iconic HBO drama? Sanctions are Coming . Most folks clued in to the political arena think this is a reference to sanctions against Iraq. And while many experts on the topic seem to believe this is a terrible idea, we’re not here to get into a complicated political debate. (Except to say that maybe the President of the United States should not treat such a significant idea/step as a game or a joke.) We are here, however, to simply say: Come on, Mr. President! To paraphrase critics of athletes who bring up social issues, can’t you stick to politics? HBO agrees with this assessment. The network has issued a brief statement in response to Trump’s use of its show’s tagline and font. It reads: We were not aware of this messaging and would prefer our trademark not be misappropriated for political purposes. It has also Tweeted, hilariously, “How do you say trademark misuse in Dothraki?” And star Maisie Williams, who plays wildly popular character Arya, also expressed her disdain on social media: Game of Thrones Season 8 will be comprised of just six episodes. However, each will be movie-length, around 90 minutes if not more, many sources have confirmed. But that isn’t the point right now. The point is that Trump has already made it difficult to enjoy professional football and Twitter and ensured that we’ll never refer to our soccer game carpools as “caravans” ever again. Did he really need to go ahead and link himself to Game of Thrones as well? View Slideshow: Presidential Alert Text Sent to 225 Million Irritated Cell Phone Users
