Lil Wayne Proves It’s Still Wayne’s World As #5 Hottest MC

The Martian’s double-platinum album and star-studded YMCMB roster land him firmly on MTV News’ Hottest MCs in the Game VII list. By MTV News staff Lil Wayne Photo: Getty Images On Tha Carter IV, Lil Wayne raps about his “Nightmares of the Bottom.” While the sentiment revealed a humbler side of Tunechi, the Martian reached astronomical heights in 2011 and lands in the top half of MTV News’ Hottest MCs in the Game VII list. But Weezy’s winning year was even more impressive when you consider that the Cash Money soldier spent most of 2010 behind bars . With little time to prepare, Wayne hit 2011 hard beginning with the smash rap single (and Carter IV lead track) “6 Foot 7 Foot.” As with many albums, C4 saw a ton of delays, but Weezy made up for things with his Sorry 4 the Wait mixtape . When the fourth installment of the Carter series finally arrived on August 28 (after a show-closing VMA performance), Wayne moved 964,000 copies in a single week, just barely missing the platinum-in-a-week mark he hit with 2008’s Carter III. Want to join the debate? Just hit us on Twitter using the hashtag #HottestMC! “Wayne had a strong year; almost a million in a week doesn’t lie,” said Yomi Desalu, MTV’s senior director of music and talent. “He’s definitely remained relevant for the whole year and once he came out, he hit the ground running.” HOT STREAK Album: Tha Carter IV Selected Mixtapes: Sorry 4 the Wait Singles: “How to Love,” “She Will” (featuring Drake), “Mirror” (featuring Bruno Mars) Street Bangers: “6 Foot 7 Foot” (featuring Cory Gunz), “John” (featuring Rick Ross) Key Guest Appearances: Kelly Rowland’s “Motivation,” B.o.B’s “Strange Clouds,” Ace Hood’s “Hustle Hard” (remix), Drake’s “The Motto” Meteoric Metrics: Wayne’s #1 Carter IV moved 964,000 copies in its first week and has been certified double-platinum by the RIAA Business Ventures: Young Money CEO continued to clock dollars off record sales from Drake and Nicki Minaj; launched Trukfit clothing line Tours: I Am Still Music run took Wayne across three continents and raked in $47 million Monumental Moment: Hours after closing out the MTV VMAs in August, Tunechi released Tha Carter IV, earning a platinum plaque in just 14 days. Forecast: Wayne should continue to dominate in 2012. YM president Mack Maine predicted that Weezy will drop sequels to Rebirth and I Am Not a Human Being, and Tha Carter V is always a possibility. “I think that’s an understatement, that he remained relevant. I think that he maintained his dominance,” said Rob Markman, MTV News’ senior hip-hop writer. When we talk about Wayne, nobody [has] sold a million in a week — since Lil Wayne. Quite frankly, I think #4 is too low.” It was another banner year for Wayne. His first-week sales were higher than that of any other rap artist and his I Am Still Music Tour, Video Music Award performance and “MTV Unplugged” special proved that the YMCMB CEO was as impactful as ever. Granted, Weezy’s 2011 style and swag were an acquired taste (see his VMA animal-print jeggings and the day-Glo-green moon boots he sported in Drake’s “Motto” video), but his lyrical prowess on songs like “It’s Good” could not be denied. Some members of the Hip-Hop Brain Trust insisted that the Wayne train had lost a bit of steam though. “You talk about Sorry 4 the Wait, people were disappointed that it wasn’t No Ceilings. People were disappointed that Tha Carter IV was not Tha Carter III, ” said MTV Jams’ Tuma Basa. A few even contended that Weezy was riding off of the success of his Young Money artists Nicki Minaj and Drake. Did the students surpass the teacher? One roundtable panelist argued that Nicki the Ninja, who debuted on the “Hottest MCs” list at #6 in 2010 , had bested her sensei. “I definitely think over the past year Nicki’s singles have actually resonated with her fans. I don’t think any of Wayne’s songs [have] — if you want to say ‘John’ that’s a Rick Ross record; if you want to say ‘She Will,’ it was a Drake record,” said Steven Roberts, a producer/writer at MTV News. The Wayne/Nicki argument became so strong in fact that moderator and show host Sway Calloway decided to take a vote. In a most surprising turn, six of the nine experts elected to move Nicki Minaj up to the #4 spot and Lil Wayne down to #5. Still, no matter how you slice the pie, it’s all Young Moola, baby! Hip-Hop Beef: Word Is Common And Drake Were Ready To Catch Fade Backstage At The Grammy’s And Were Separated By Cops Not Once But TWICE!

In this weeks episode of “When Lightskinned Rappers Attack” According to a Celebuzz source who was backstage at Sunday’s Grammy Awards in LA, they saw the rappers get into not one, but two separate fights. Each time, the arguments had to be broken up by “uniformed police.” After admitting to rapping about Drake in one of his songs, Common claimed earlier in the night, that the two had long since buried the hatchet. The rapper told Fuse: “It was all in the art of Hip Hop but it’s kind of over now. It’s over. But it was all in the art of Hip Hop. He said some things to me so I had to say some things back… I wouldn’t say [he started it] but I know I heard something that I felt was directed to me so I addressed it. That’s all. But you know, thank God we were able to move forward from it and all is good.” Now, now, boys, both of you put on your matching lamb’s wool cardigans and go sit in the corner until you cool off. ‘Spider-Man’ Star Feeling Pressure Of Playing Iconic Character

‘It’s a huge responsibility for me to be in that suit and to take on the mantle from a fantastic actor,’ Andrew Garfield tell MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Andrew Garfield in “The Amazing Spider-Man” Photo: Sony Pictures The upcoming reboot “The Amazing Spider-Man” is a prime example of the pressure filmmakers and studios are under to deliver the best adaptation possible. Anyone who’s familiar with comic book movies and the corresponding hoopla that surrounds them is more than accustomed to the demands of their fervent fan communities. If that movie is good, it wins support for life. If it’s bad, fans have various ways of expressing their disappointment and are not afraid to do so. Perhaps no one is feeling that pressure at the moment more than the movie’s star himself, Andrew Garfield . When MTV News caught up with Garfield recently before a screening event for the film, we asked him if his level of stress and anxiety is higher now that the release date is approaching or back when he was first cast in the role. “It’s always the same. It’s always a [level] 10 inside. It’s just a question of whether you acknowledge it or try to ignore it or try to suppress it, or try to pretend like it’s not there or act like you don’t care,” he said. “I’m at a 10 constantly.” Garfield went on to emphasize how much being a true fan informed his performance, in both positive and negative ways. “It’s a huge responsibility for me to be in that suit and to take on the mantle from a fantastic actor previously and from fantastic artists and writers and ultimately Stan Lee. That’s where it came from,” he said. “I feel lucky and unlucky that I’m a fan first. That’s what I am, I’m a Spider-Man fan at my core. I feel lucky in the sense that I feel like I know Peter Parker, because I grew up with him. I feel unlucky in the sense of how disappointed I am that I’m playing him. “I don’t’ mean that in a self-deprecating [way],” he added. “No actor could ever live up to the character for me, and that’s weird to say because I’m the actor playing this particular incarnation, I can’t wait for another actor to take it on so I can judge.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Amazing Spider-Man.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Rick Ross, La The Darkman Top Drake’s ‘Hottest MCs’

‘I’m just trying to make good music,’ Drake tells MTV News about his own positioning on the upcoming ‘Hottest MCs in the Game’ list. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sam Hendrick Drake Photo: MTV News Picking the “Hottest MCs in the Game” is no easy task — just ask Drake . Granted, the OVO boss was a bit unprepared for the question when he walked the carpet at the Bing Bar during his trip to the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, but Drizzy came up with some favorites. ” Rick Ross , obviously, #1,” Drake told MTV News last month before he continued to rattle off more names as they popped into his head. “J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar.” Want to Join the debate? Hit us on Twitter using the hashtag #HottestMC! Drizzy places bars at a premium, and though it took a few seconds, he name-dropped one of his favorite MCs, calling out an early Wu-Tang Clan affiliate La the Darkman. “Crazy, though, amazing, amazing bars on that,” Drake said without naming a specific La mixtape or body of work. The Take Care MC acknowledged Jay-Z and Kanye’s Watch the Throne, as well as Meek Mill and the entire Maybach Music Group. However, he did fail to name his Young Money boss Lil Wayne — though we’re sure it was merely an oversight. When asked to determine what his own positioning on the “Hottest MCs in the Game” list should be, Drake took a very humble road: “Whatever it is, I’m just here, I’m just trying to make good music.” Tune in to MTV2 on Sunday, February 19, at 10 p.m. ET/PT to catch ” MTV2 Presents: Yo! MTV Raps Classic Cuts ,” then watch “Hottest MCs in the Game VII” immediately after at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT before capping the night off with ” Sucker Free Certified ” at 11 p.m. ET/PT. Fat Joe Debates Drake, Ross And Lil Wayne For ‘Hottest MC’

‘I’ll probably just say Rick Ross and I probably bump Drake even more,’ fat Joe tells MTV News of his own internal ‘Hottest MCs in the Game’ debate. By Rob Markman Fat Joe Photo: MTV News When it comes to MTV’s “Hottest MCs in the Game” debate there are no shortage of opinions. Whether through social media or in more intimate social circles like the barbershop , seemingly everyone wants to weigh in and pick rap’s #1 MC. Fat Joe , though a successful rapper himself is a fan first, and when it comes to picking the hottest, he has trouble narrowing down his decision to just one. “I heard a rumor someone told me Lil Wayne ain’t on the list,” Joe told MTV News during a January interview. “I said, ‘They sniff heron over there.’ I’m like, ‘That’s Lil Wayne, man.’ ” Well Joe Crack will have to wait until the February 19 airing of “Hottest MCs in the Game VII” on MTV2 to find out whether or not Weezy made the cut, but that didn’t stop him from adding his two cents to the debate. After rattling off Jay-Z, Kanye West, Meek Mill, Nicki Minaj, Eminem and Royce Da 5’9″ as deserving spot holders on the top 10 list, the Terror Squad leader got visibly torn when debating with himself about Drake. “The reason why I wouldn’t say Drake [is] #1 — because Drake really is #1 to be honest with you, but the singing and all that,” Joe said about the Young Money star. Since he broke out with 2009’s So Far Gone, Drizzy has proven to be equally adept at spitting rap bars and singing harmonies. His skills have made him a complete artist and on his latest album, Take Care, Drake masters the balancing act with tracks that seamlessly blend hip-hop and R&B. Joe compares Drizzy’s range with Kanye West’s 2008 auto-tuned album 808s & Heartbreak. However, when Yeezy is in strict rap mode, Fat Joe admits to being ‘Ye’s #1 fan. “Same thing with Drake, I love his music, I listen to it all the time, but if you would get his music and get someone else who’s just as talented as him who use them beats and is goin’ crazy like that, then I would pick them,” he said. “I love the singing, but when it’s 50 percent singing and 50 percent rap, then I’ll take a rap album over any,” he continued before finally deciding on his pick for “Hottest MC” — sort of. “For instance, I’ll probably just say Rick Ross and I probably bump Drake even more, but I want that … yeah I need that boom bap.” Tune in to MTV2 on Sunday, February 19, at 10 p.m. ET to catch “MTV2 Presents: Yo! MTV Raps Classic Cuts,” then watch “Hottest MCs in the Game VII” immediately after at 10:30 p.m. ET before capping the night off with “Sucker Free Certified” at 11 p.m. ET.
