Drake ‘OK’ With Being Dropped From Kanye West’s ‘All Of The Lights’

‘Kanye’s creative process is ever-changing,’ Drizzy tells Shade 45. By Alvin Blanco Drake Photo: MTV News Even if Drake and Kanye West aren’t best friends, Drizzy still counts the Chicago rapper/producer as one of his musical idols. Drake dropped into Shade 45’s morning show Thursday (December 9) and chatted it up with host Elliott Wilson on a variety of topics, including being removed from the final version of Yeezy’s “All of the Lights.” An early version of the song, whose crowded guest list includes Elton John, La Roux’s Elly Jackson, Charlie Wilson and Ryan Leslie, had previously leaked that included Drake, but the Toronto rapper is nowhere to be found on the version that appears on West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. “Kanye’s creative process is ever-changing,” Drake said, adding that he doesn’t know why he was removed. “We make music differently. I make what comes to me and I hate changing it, whereas ‘Ye will change something 30 or 40 times to get it perfect. To each their own, and the change was to put all those people on it, and I wasn’t one of them. That’s completely OK.” Since Drake came to national prominence with the release of his So Far Gone mixtape, the MC has been compared to West — not just for his introspective lyrics, but for his overall sound as well. Back in August, Drake’s main producer, Noah “40” Shebib , relayed a story about Kanye West cursing him out for using his production style. Add to that mix the fact that Drake and Kanye have appeared on relatively few songs together — including “Forever,” with Lil Wayne and Eminem — and conspiracy theorists feel there must be tension between the two. “I can never sit here and tell you that’s not one of my idols, that’s not one of my favorite rappers,” Drake said of Kanye during the Shade 45 interview. “Whatever energy I’ve ever felt is irrelevant. When you ask me, ‘What do I think of Kanye West,’ I’mma always have something positive to say.” The host then interjected by asking, “But sometimes the energy is not always where you want it to be?” “I feel like we can co-exist,” Drake answered. “I feel like hip-hop is broad enough that we can both exist and give great music without feeling like it’s one or the other. I might be the only one that feels that way, though.” Drake stressed his reverence for Kanye West. At only 24 years old, the Canadian MC said he missed the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac era, and Yeezy is a personal favorite artist whose career he can personally trace since its inception. My Chemical Romance Say ‘Na Na Na’ Saved The Band

Gerard Way says Danger Days’ first single ‘was the momentum we needed to dig deep and record another album.’ By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way Photo: Warner Brothers On November 22, My Chemical Romance will return with their supercharged new album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys , and if they seem rather invigorated this time out — what with frontman Gerard Way’s radioactive-red dye job and their newfound affinity for Trans Ams and DayGlo leather jackets — well, they owe it all to one song: the hyperkinetic first single, “Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na).” Because, as Way told BBC Radio’s Zane Lowe earlier this week, up until the moment they wrote the song, MCR were floundering, putting the finishing touches on an album (produced by Brendan O’Brien) that they weren’t happy with, and dealing with the departure of drummer Bob Bryar . But as soon as they had the breakneck chord progressions in place for “Na Na Na,” they knew everything had changed. “That’s the moment where we said, ‘This song changes everything. We’re starting over right now. We’re starting it over with [producer Rob] Cavallo, and we’re doing it now,’ ” Way said. “Everything up to that point had felt like we had been in this kind of stasis, and as artists, stasis really equals death. So, it was so bad, the vibe wasn’t good, and then ‘Na Na’ happened. And then, all of a sudden, there was this real, big intensity underneath us, and it was the momentum we needed to dig deep and record another album.” Recharged, the band met up with Cavallo (who did their 2006 album, The Black Parade ) and powered through. The end result was Danger Days, and though the album’s release is still more than two months away, Way says that “Na Na Na” is just a taste of what fans can expect on the album. There’s an energy to it, a spirit. It’s the song that saved the band, and he hopes the MCRmy will feel that power too. “To me, the power of the song is how it propelled all of us, and that’s kind of how we hoped it would propel everyone else,” Way said. “[The] spirit is … back, and it took a little while to figure out exactly who and what the band is and kind of re-embrace it, as opposed to turn our back on it.” What do you think of MCR’s new single, “Na Na Na”? Drake Says He’s Debating ‘Fancy’ Video Re-shoot

Drizzy tells MTV News he has a ‘way better idea’ for the clip, but may start fresh with ‘Show Me a Good Time.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: MTV News The last time Drake changed his mind about a music video at the last minute, his original idea for a sensitive clip for the ladies turned into the over-the-top “Best I Ever Had” visual directed by Kanye West . This time, however, the Toronto lyricist insists his next video will be great, regardless of his temporary indecisiveness. He’s debating whether to reshoot “Fancy” or commission a clip for his next single, “Show Me a Good Time.” “We shot ‘Fancy,’ and to be honest with you, it was done and I watched it and I just had a way better idea,” Drake told MTV News earlier this week. “And that’s why the video hasn’t come out yet. And to follow up ‘Find Your Love’ and ‘Miss Me,’ I really wanted to do something different, conceptually, and so I had this amazing idea and now I’m debating whether I should reshoot it or go straight to ‘Show Me a Good Time.’ But there should be a new Drake visual in the next little bit.” The Thank Me Later star said the “Fancy” clip was directed by Anthony Mandler (Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna), who also helmed “Over,” “Find Your Love” and “Miss Me” for Drake. According to Drake, the two are deciding what to do next, and the rapper is enthusiastic about the forthcoming production, regardless of which song they decide to shoot. “It’s something to look forward to,” he said. “I’m excited by it.” Next up, Drake will appear in Rick Ross’ “Aston Martin Music” video. Ross talked to MTV News about the clip earlier this month, saying the visual was “dope.” “We were just going over treatments for ‘Aston Martin Music,’ ” Ross said. “We’re going to shoot the dope version: Drake’s going to be rapping his verse and Chrisette [Michele will be there] and most definitely me. We’re just finalizing all the details. We should be shooting that hopefully next week, so look for that real soon.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Drake Related Artists Drake

Drake Says ‘Young Sweet Jones’ Reference Pays Tribute To Pimp C

‘I feel like I’m extended UGK family,’ Drizzy tells Mixtape Daily of controversy from Pimp-inspired ‘Put It Down’ verse. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: Octobers Very Own The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Drake lays his game down flat on Bun B’s “Put It Down,” from the certified classic Trill O.G. “I just bought a car/ The n—a Pimp owned it,” Drizzy rhymes on the chorus, paying homage to UGK’s Pimp C. “I threw some tints on it/ He would have loved it how/ Put it down, put it down.” In his guest verse, the Toronto native says, “I got 100 girls in each phone/ Drizzy Drake mane, Young Sweet Jones.” Sweet Jones, of course, was the late Pimp C’s nickname. In fact, a posthumous Pimp album, due on October 5, is titled The Naked Soul of Sweet Jones. (Drake makes a guest turn on a track called “What Up.”) The 23-year-old Young Money franchise player says he’s heard about the small undercurrent of controversy stemming from his tribute-paying reference to the legendary Texas street general. But according to Drake, there was absolutely no disrespect intended. “I just feel that I’m a huge Pimp supporter,” explained Drake, who sends the MC an R.I.P. at the end of his verse. “I’m a huge Pimp fan. I feel like I’m extended UGK family. Bun and Pimp are like uncles, dads to me. They’re G’s. [When I’m around them], I feel like I do around my uncles. They’re still the coldest cats in the world, but Bun makes me feel … he’s a legend. His presence, it’s like me calling myself Young Bun B, [when I call myself] Young Sweet Jones. “It’s just seeing a bit of them in myself; by no means did I mean to offend. I heard it was somebody upset about me making that reference. I think it was somebody in his family or something. But I never mean any disrespect. I love rap. Young Sweet Jones is just a little nickname. People really started calling me that before I ever said it in a rap song. I used to rep for Houston so hard. They just be like, ‘Man, that’s Young Sweet Jones right there.’ I just put it in a song. And it sounded dope.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Drake Brings Out Mary J. Blige, Swizz Beatz For VMA Performance

The heavyweights performed sophisticated rendition of Thank Me Later track ‘Fancy.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Mary J. Blige and Drake perform during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty If we have learned anything at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , it’s that Drake really knows how to spiff up a joint. Mining the same midcentury swagger the Toronto MC worked in his VMA promo, Drizzy side-stepped the outrageous antics the big show is known for in favor of a sophisticated rendition of his Thank Me Later track “Fancy.” Following an introduction by stars of the movie “The Social Network” — including Justin Timberlake, who dubbed Drake the “most exciting artist in music” — the set opened with Mary J. Blige channeling her “I’m Going Down” video in an all-black suit and fedora, as a similarly dressed Swizz Beatz manned a grand piano. Then Drizzy descended an illuminated staircase in a white dinner jacket below a sign that read “Drake” in bold lights. He began to spit, and the MC didn’t let the grown-man look slow him down, rattling off the lyrics with energetic abandon. Mary then broke it down, belting out rhymes about ladies with “their nails done, hair done, everything did” with an effortless power that reminded the audience why she’s the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul. During rehearsals, Drizzy dished that the performance was inspired by the midcentury cool of the Rat Pack, an iconic crew of entertainers that included stars like Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra. “I watched the Rat Pack live at the Copa Room,” Drake, who was nominated for Best Male Video and Best Hip-Hop Video awards , told MTV News. “It was just so relaxed. They were smoking cigarettes and drinking Jack. It was women everywhere. It wasn’t, ‘Let’s just rap and be epic and be huge.’ They were like, ‘I really run this. Me and Sammy and Dean.’ I wanted to get up there and look fly.” It’s fitting that Drizzy was joined by Mary J. and Swizz for his VMA performance, as “Fancy,” which was crafted by the superproducer, was originally slated to be a joint for the Queen. But Drake knows a hit when he hears it. “He was like, ‘That’s the record I need,’ ” Swizz told MTV News about Drake’s reaction upon first hearing the song. Swizzy initially offered to re-create the song’s feel on a different track. “I said, ‘OK, I’ll make you that.’ ” Apparently Drizzy wasn’t having it and insisted on the actual “Fancy” song, not a replacement. “No. That’s the record I need,” Drake said. Taylor Swift’s ‘Mine’ Recalls Other Pop-Culture Love Stories

Taylor’s flash forward calls up images from ‘The Notebook,’ Guns N’ Roses videos and more. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift and Toby Hemingway in “Mine” Photo: Big Machine Records Taylor Swift’s “Mine” video, directed by Roman White, travels forward in time as it tells a love story from beginning to end. But in its imagery, the clip also goes back in time, referencing some familiar moments in pop culture. Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You” : When Swift’s character remembers the fights her parents used to have, her memories mirror Clarkson’s attempts to exorcise the demons of her past to find love in her future. “The Notebook” : Granted, any time fans of chick flicks see two good-looking people very much in love, they think of “The Notebook.” And like Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, Swift and her love interest, played by Toby Hemingway, spent some romantic time in a boat. “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” : “Mine” plays some head games with its viewers, and fantasy and reality are sometimes hard to distinguish from one another — much like the dreamlike ups and downs of the love affair between Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) and Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) in Michel Gondry’s 2004 flick. “November Rain” : The fact that Taylor’s wedding scene reminds us of that great scene in the Guns N’ Roses video when Stephanie Seymour and Axl Rose emerge from the church is maybe a bit unsettling. “Love the Way You Lie” : Much like in the recent Eminem and Rihanna video, Taylor and Toby have an epic fight in a kitchen. At least they’re less dysfunctional than Dominic and Megan. Britney Spears’ Fantasy : Brit’s perfume ad features the same “flash into the future” structure after the pop star in question locks eyes with a would-be suitor. Taylor Swift videos : Yeah, Swift even references herself in “Mine.” The video’s loose definition of time and space recalls her “Romeo and Juliet”-inspired clip for “Love Story” and her VMA-nominated “Fifteen.” This time, however, Taylor’s growing up, not looking back. What pop-culture references have you spotted in Taylor Swift’s “Mine”? Talk about it in the comments. Related Videos Taylor Swift’s ‘Mine’ Premieres Related Artists Taylor Swift
