‘Harry Potter’ Outflies ‘Tangled’ At Thanksgiving Weekend Box Office

‘Deathly Hallows, Part 1’ continues to enchant moviegoers. By Josh Wigler Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I” Photo: Warner Bros. As people across the country recover from their Thanksgiving turkey comas, it’s clear that moviegoers remained energetic throughout the five-day holiday box-office weekend. Thanks to the combined efforts of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1” and “Tangled,” this past weekend was the second-highest-grossing Thanksgiving period on record, second only to last year when “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” and “The Blind Side” battled it out. “Harry Potter” led the charge, soaring away from the five-day weekend with $76.3 million in its pocket, $50.4 million of which was made during the standard Friday-through-Sunday timeframe. The seventh installment in the beloved novel-turned-film series has earned $220.4 million after two weekends in theaters, an impressive result that’s bound to get shattered when the second half of “Deathly Hallows” arrives next summer. But Harry, Ron and Hermione didn’t earn first place without a fight, as Disney’s “Tangled” provided some stiff competition. Both movies targeted similar family-friendly crowds, and while “Harry Potter” won in the end, it was a close race. “Tangled” ended its five-day debut with $69 million, less than $10 million behind “Harry.” It was even closer when examining the standard three-day totals of each film, where “Potter” outpaced “Tangled” by less than $1 million. Of course, it can’t be ignored that “Tangled” debuted in almost 2,500 3-D locations — meaning higher ticket prices — while Warner Bros. opted to skip 3-D altogether for the first “Deathly Hallows” installment. “Tangled” performed the best of the weekend’s new releases, with Cher and Christina Aguilera’s “Burlesque” coming in a distant second with a $17.2 million fourth-place finish. Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway’s “Love & Other Drugs” and Dwayne Johnson’s “Faster” fell flat, arriving in sixth and seventh place with $14 million and $12.2 million respectively over the five-day holiday weekend. The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1” ($76.3 million) #2 “Tangled” ($69 million) #3 “Megamind” ($17.6 million) #4 “Burlesque” ($17.2 million) #5 “Unstoppable” ($16.2 million) Upcoming Releases “The Warrior’s Way” kicks its way into the box-office arena next weekend, while director Darren Aronofsky and actress Natalie Portman’s “Black Swan” dances in limited release. Another marijuana tunnel and two more warehouses found

20 tons of pot seized, eight arrested in San Diego and Tijuana. Reporting from San Diego — Federal authorities have unearthed another cross-border tunnel in a San Diego warehouse district, the second major tunnel discovery and multi-ton seizure of marijuana believed to be from Mexico's most powerful drug cartel in a month. The tunnel, which started in a residence in Tijuana, stretched nearly half a mile and split into two passageways, with the branches emerging at separate warehouses nearly 800 feet apart. The tunnel was within a block of a subterranean passage found three weeks ago, where authorities seized more than 25 tons of marijuana, the second-largest marijuana seizure in U.S. history. With Thursday's haul of 20 more tons, authorities said they had dealt a significant double blow to Mexican organized crime groups. The amount seized was the equivalent of about 17 million marijuana joints, said Ralph Partridge, the special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration office in San Diego. “This has a huge impact,” Partridge said. Authorities believe the drugs found in the tunnels this month belonged to separate cells of the Sinaloa drug cartel, which has long used northern Baja California as staging ground for smuggling drugs into California. The discovery on Thursday morning came after U.S. agents stopped a tractor-trailer loaded with marijuana bales that had just left a warehouse on Marconi Drive. Inside the empty warehouse space where a “For Rent” sign hung out front, agents found an opening cut into the concrete floor. They traversed the tunnel to the second opening in a warehouse a few blocks away on Via de la Amistad. To find the opening on the Tijuana side, Mexican Army soldiers traversed the entire 2,200-foot passage, which featured lighting and ventilation systems. They surfaced in the kitchen of the residence where a family lived. Authorities said six people were arrested in Mexico. “They were very surprised,” said Tim Durst, an assistant special agent from Immigration and Customs Enforcement who heads the multi-agency San Diego Tunnel Task Force. The bust culminated an eight-month investigation, built largely on tips from informants. Authorities seized four tons of marijuana in the Tijuana residence and another location in Mexico; three tons in the tunnel; and about 13 tons in the tractor trailer. Two men were arrested in California, including the driver of the tractor-trailer. The tunnel was one of the longest ever discovered and had several unique features that highlighted traffickers' evolving approach to ferrying drugs under the border. The floor of the passageway was lined with tongue-and-groove wooden boards that served as a level surface for the cart and rail system. There was an underground room, roughly 10 by 20 feet, where smugglers off-loaded the marijuana bales from the cart before hoisting them to the surface. The most unusual feature was the construction of two tunnel branches, which authorities speculate allowed smugglers alternate exit points in case of surveillance. http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-tunnel-20101127,0,416000.story added by: im1mjrpain

‘Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows’ Dominates Weekend Box Office

Seventh ‘Potter’ film conjures up a magical $125.1 million debut, best opening in franchise’s history. By Josh Wigler Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1” Photo: Warner Bros. Although Harry, Ron and Hermione have yet to secure all the weapons necessary in their impending battle against He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, they’ve already raised a significant amount of funds for the first half of their two-part war against the Dark Lord: To the surprise of absolutely nobody, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” is a magical success. The first half of “Deathly Hallows” premiered in theaters this weekend with all of the explosive wonder that fans have come to expect from the “Harry Potter” franchise. With an estimated $125.1 million earned across roughly 4,125 locations, “Deathly Hallows” enjoyed the best opening weekend of any previous “Harry Potter” film, easily stealing the record from “Goblet of Fire,” which earned $102.7 million in 2005. Not only does “Deathly Hallows” mark a new franchise high, it’s also the sixth-biggest opening weekend of all time, sitting comfortably alongside such cinematic titans as “The Dark Knight” ($158.4 million), “Spider-Man 3” ($151 million), “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” ($142.8 million), “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” ($135.6 million) and “Iron Man 2” ($128.1 million). Despite its successes, however, “Deathly Hallows” was unable to wrest away the record set by “New Moon” for best November weekend of all time, falling short by nearly $20 million. “New Moon” also remains the third-highest-grossing opening weekend of all time, giving “Twilight” the edge over “Harry Potter” — for now, at least, as next summer’s “Deathly Hallows” conclusion is poised to break all kinds of records. “Deathly Hallows” wasn’t the only film in theaters this weekend, not that you would have noticed; the film outpaced the combined total of the four remaining top five competitors by a massive $80.1 million margin. Indeed, the only other movie to hit wide release this weekend was “The Next Three Days,” and despite the star power of Russell Crowe, the Lionsgate thriller landed poorly in fifth place with $6.8 million. The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” ($125.1 million) #2 “Megamind” ($16.2 million) #3 “Unstoppable” ($13.1 million) #4 “Due Date” ($9.2 million) #5 “The Next Three Days” ($6.8 million) Upcoming Releases Several newcomers are entering the box-office arena as “Deathly Hallows” looks to continue its domination next weekend: Dwayne Johnson returns to kicking butt and taking names in “Faster,” Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi tell fairy tales in Disney’s “Tangled,” Christina Aguilera and Cher dance off in “Burlesque” and Jake Gyllenhaal enjoys “Love and Other Drugs” with Anne Hathaway.
