Oogieloves Bombs With Worst Box Office Opening Of All Time, Still Planning Sequels

Oh, those Oogieloves — even a record-setting, all-time low worst box office opening of all time can’t keep ’em down. At least, according to Oogieloves mastermind Kenn Viselman, who managed to spin the G-rated kiddie pic’s abysmal $448,131 three-day take (that’s roughly $207 per screen) into something positive. Debuting to shockingly low $47-per-screen results on Wednesday, Oogieloves was headed for the wrong kind of notoriety even as business picked up ever so slightly over the long holiday weekend; by Labor Day, numbers across its 2,160-theater opening had risen to $72 per screen. Improvement! Speaking with The Wrap on Monday, Viselman, who boasted of turning the Teletubbies into a phenomenon and opened Oogieloves in wide release under his own Kenn Viselman Productions banner, embraced the silver lining: This was never about box office,” Viselman told TheWrap Monday morning. “It was about exposure. We’ve now got the notoriety we were trying to get for weeks before the film opened,” he said. He said that a financing glitch weeks before the release hurt the marketing of the film. “I won’t say we’re not disappointed, for our team and for the exhibitors who both did a great job,” he said. “But this wasn’t made to win the Academy Award — it was made to get parents to get up and dance with their kids. I know from talking with parents who did take their kids to see it, that they loved it. “The attention we’re getting as a result of this is going to help our video on demand and DVD campaigns,” he said, “and it’s going to help the next films, whether they’re theatrical releases or video.” Next films . Ahem. The “interactive” children’s adventure involves three giant candy-colored creatures called the Oogieloves trying to find five magical balloons in time for their friend’s birthday party. Along the way they cross paths with a veritable buffet of C-listers (Chazz Palminteri, Jamie Pressly, Cloris Leachman, Cary Elwes, Christopher Lloyd, Toni Braxton) who sing and dance and encourage the kids in the audience to follow suit. It’s worth noting that in spite of the plot and box office response, Oogieloves did garner some critical support. Over at Rotten Tomatoes it boasts a 32 percent Tomatometer rating; one parenting-oriented publication called it ” enthralling for preschoolers .” My friend Nick Robinson took the liberty of Tweeting his Oogieloves theatrical experience yesterday in a mostly empty theater — if singing and shouting and dancing and blowing kisses at the screen is encouraged in Oogieloves , why not live-Tweeting? If you’re not among the target demographic of parents enduring talking vacuums and Doc Brown in a sombrero for the sake of their toddlers, this might give you the best idea of what it means to live through Oogieloves : From a narrative perspective the movie is troubled because it has failed to establish why the balloons are magical. #OOGIELOVES — Nick Robinson (@Nickrob) September 04, 2012 The vacuum cleaner is mad that the #OOGIELOVES drank milkshakes and he made sure the pillow was asleep so he could flirt w/ the window.— Nick Robinson (@Nickrob) September 04, 2012 I don't even like Cary Elwes that much but I feel bad for him as a human being. #OOGIELOVES — Nick Robinson (@Nickrob) September 04, 2012 The balloons sang a song and then they set the movie up for a sequel. #OOGIELOVES — Nick Robinson (@Nickrob) September 04, 2012 THE OTHER PEOPLE JUST WALKED OUT!!!!!!!!!! #OOGIELOVES it's not Over— Nick Robinson (@Nickrob) September 04, 2012 Reward Robinson for doing this so you don’t have to by following him on Twitter . And can we all have a moment of silence for poor Cary Elwes? Here’s a clip of him in Oogieloves as “Bobby Wobbly.” It’s worse than I’d feared . Previously: So, WTF Is An Oogieloves, Anyway? WATCH: Scenes From Stillman’s Damsels In Distress Become Aitken’s ‘Weekend Lover’ Music Video

Whit Stillman’s Damsels in Distress is about to get some additional international mileage thanks to the release of the  official video for Victoria Aitken’s “Weekend Lover.”  The video for the song — whic hit No. 10 on the U.K. dance charts and is now catching fire in Germany — is composed entirely of scenes from Stillman’s movie about a group of trend-setting women (led by Greta Gerwig ) at a boorish East-coast college whose romantic entanglements upend their friendship and their lives. (“Weekend Lover” is featured on the soundtrack of   Damsels in Distress , which was released on DVD at the end of July.) “It’s weird how the story I tell in my song fits his film almost exactly,” Aitken told Movieline . “My song is about me as a damsel in distress.” The singer/songwriter, who is the daughter of former Conservative British Parliament member Jonathan Aitken,  wrote the track after a phone call with “You’re Beautiful” singer James Blunt during which she complained about the state of her love life. “I told him, ‘It’s a disaster. I don’t want to be a weekend lover,'” Aitken said. “And then I thought, ‘Oh my God, that’s great.'” Aitken,  said that the video was put together by “Whit’s team and editors at my label, Black Hole Records,” which is also the home of superstart DJ Tiesto. The Londoner is also about to release “Wasting Away,”  a collaboration with reggae artist Spragga Benz that, she said was written in commemoration of  the partying in London and Jamaica that took place after Usain Bolt’s Olympics 100-meter gold-medal win. No stranger to tabloid attention, Aitken also told us that she has the perfect song should Prince Harry’s nude Las Vegas pictures scandal inspire a comedy movie, or even a music video: her single “Queen of the House.” “It’s how anyone can be queen or king of the dance floor,” she said. “Harry was king of the house in Vegas,” Aitken said.  “He looks great naked, and I can’t understand why the media is saying he embarrassed the royal family.  If anything, he’s glamorized them.” I’m inclined to agree.  I mean, didn’t I just see photos of Queen Elizabeth in a hoodie? Dax Shepard Compensates For Crappy Hit And Run Box Office By Dissing Age Of The Expendables 2 Cast

Speaking of old…. Dax Shepard deployed one of the oldest marketing tricks in the book on the Conan show on Monday when he diverted attention from the lame box-office performance of his movie Hit and Run by poking fun at the aging action stars who kicked his cinematic ass, the cast of  The Expendables 2 . Shepard told host Conan O’Brien that the cast of the Sylvester Stallone-directed The Expendables 2 were “all show and no go” when it came to their collective well-muscled appearance.   “It looks like the zombie apocalypse is saving the earth,” Shepard said in reference to the veteran ensemble. Alas, Hit and Run might have benefited from scenes of a zombie apocalypse, or something that would have raised moviegoer interest. The picture, which also starred Bradley Cooper and Shepard’s real-life girlfriend Kristen Bell grossed just $5.9 million in its initial five-day opening. The movie ranked 10th for the weekend, well behind The Expendables 2 , which saw a $13.5 million weekend and a 15-day domestic box-office take of $52.3 million. Feeling a little insecure there, Dax? High and Low: Ryan Gosling Wants a Revolution, Taylor Kitsch Will Settle For Kicking Some Alien Ass

While the GOP gathers in tropical storm-plagued Tampa to Do That Thing They Do, this week’s new DVD selections feature a rallying cry against the status quo and an overblown, flag-waving spectacle  based on a board game that, all things considered, is still pretty fun to watch.  HIGH: #ReGeneration (Virgil Films; $19.99, DVD) Who’s Responsible: Written and directed by Phillip Montgomery; narrated (and produced) by Ryan Gosling; appearances by Noam Chomsky , Howard Zinn, Talib Kweli. What It’s All About: The film’s marketing suggests it’s a documentary about the Occupy movement, but it’s got a more ambitious agenda than that. #ReGeneration feels less interested in the economic roots of the protests than in the cultural underpinnings of Occupy (mass media manipulation, the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, corporatization, the crumbling educational infrastructure, our interactions with computer and TV screens instead of each other). Interview subjects include activists, intellectuals, high school students, the founder of Adbusters magazine, and just plain folks who feel somewhat helpless about their ability to change the world. Why It’s Schmancy: Packing such ambitious subject matter into 81 minutes leads to a certain lack of focus, but the movie ultimately stands as a rallying cry for the new “Me Generation” to rediscover a sense of community and to fight back against being turned into wage-slave drones controlled by shadowy figures on high. It’s also probably one of the few documentaries you’ll ever see that features critiques of the media from both the legendarily leftist Chomsky and Libertarian Fox News commentator Tucker Carlson . Why You Should Buy It: The bonus features are relatively meager, but the deleted scenes include more thoughts from the late Zinn ( A People’s History of the United States ), some interesting interviews with Japanese teens and their parents (who seem to be dealing with the same cultural issues as their North American peers) and the use of the phrase “Coca-Colonization,” which I kinda love. LOW: Battleship (Universal Studios Home Entertainment; $34.98 Blu-Ray, $29.98 DVD) Who’s Responsible: Written by Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber, “Based on Hasbro’s Battleship”; directed by Peter Berg; starring Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson, Rihanna What It’s About: Nefarious aliens follow a beacon signal sent out from Earth — stupid science! — and the planet’s only hope to repel the invasion is a cocky, trouble-making Naval officer (Kitsch) and his plucky crew. Will they save the day? Will Kitsch win the hand of girlfriend Brooklyn Decker over the objections of her dad, the admiral (Neeson)? Will this ludicrous but entertaining action extravaganza find an audience on home video after tanking at the box office? Why It’s Fun: Granted, a big, loud, stupid and expensive movie based on a board game pretty much encapsulates everything that’s wrong with Hollywood these days. But as big, loud, stupid summer movies go (and the fact that it’s on DVD before Labor Day tells you something about its fate in theaters), Battleship is surprisingly entertaining in its silliness. Despite its illogical story line, the hackneyed characters and the movie’s unapologetic, join-the-Navy bursts of jingoism, it never lags. That sounds like damning with faint praise, but how many other elephantine high-concept explosion-fests in recent years can make the same claim? Why You Should Buy It: The DVD includes the requisite making-of and meet-the-cast extras, and the Blu-Ray throws in a few additional ones, including the previsualization of an alternate ending and a look into the special effects and the legendary USS Missouri (which plays a key role in the film). If you’re looking for something to throw into your home theater system to show off the booming sound and the crisp hi-def images, this one will hit the mark.
