NASA Discovers New Form of Life

Hours before their special news conference today, the cat is out of the bag: NASA has discovered a completely new life form that doesn't share the biological building blocks of anything currently living in planet Earth. This changes everything. At their conference today, NASA scientist Felisa Wolfe Simon will announce that they have found a bacteria whose DNA is completely alien to what we know today. Instead of using phosphorus, the bacteria uses arsenic. All life on Earth is made of six components: carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulfur. Every being, from the smallest amoeba to the largest whale, share the same life stream. Our DNA blocks are all the same. But not this one. This one is completely different. Discovered in the poisonous Mono Lake, California, this bacteria is made of arsenic, something that was thought to be completely impossible. While she and other scientists theorized that this could be possible, this is the first discovery. The implications of this discovery are enormous to our understanding of life itself and the possibility of finding beings in other planets that don't have to be like planet Earth. No details have been disclosed about the origin or nature of this new life form. We will know more today at 2pm EST but, while this life hasn't been found in another planet, this discovery does indeed change everything we know about biology, and in the astrobiology of the Milky Way and beyond: The universe suddenly becomes alive with potential life forms in the trillions of possible planets in galaxies known and unknown. And that's without counting yesterday's announcement on the discovery of a massive number of red dwarf stars, which may harbor trillion of Earths. http://gizmodo.com/5704158/nasa-finds-new-life added by: pjacobs51

Google Earth Tour with Kofi Annan Puts Climate Change in Human Terms

Next up in a series of amazing Google Earth tours being revealed for COP16 in Cancun is “Coping with Climate Change” — a tour that puts the problem of climate change in human terms, not just with what will happen to the planet but what will happen to human society. The tour centers the perspective that climate change is a problem impacting everything from health care to security, from economics to mobility. Narrated by former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan, it is an incredibly enlightening 15 minutes. Watch the video after the jump…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Forget About Melting Steel with Sunshine… How About Rocks? (Video)

Image: Youtube 2 Square Meters of Sunlight is All it Takes Last summer, I wrote about a cool video that showed how a solar oven could be used to melt steel . It’s a good demonstration of just how much solar energy is hitting the Earth (it’s one thing to know abstractly, but it’s much more memorable to see it in action). Here’s another very cool video in the same vein, except that they don’t just stick to steel (which has a melting point of approx. 1,370 °C/2,500 °F). The best quo… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Story of the Century? NASA May Announce Thursday to Have Found Life on Saturn’s Moon Titan

NASA is holding a press conference on Thursday “to discuss an astrobiology finding.” Are they going to announce that they've found evidence of extraterrestrial life? Blogger Jason Kottke took a look at NASA's press release, which touts “an astrobiology finding that will impact the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life” (astrobiology, besides being a cool word, is “the study of the origin, evolution, distribution and future of life in the universe”), and decided to investigate further by looking at the participants' resumes. So who are the participants? A geobiologist who's written about “geology and life on Mars”; An oceanographer who's done extensive work on arsenic-based photosynthesis; A biologist examining Titan, the largest moon of Saturn, and its similarities to early Earth; And an ecologist investigating the “chemistry of environments where life evolves.” Now, yes, obviously, throw in a grizzled marine and you've got the making of an awesome movie about discovering aliens. But that's not (the only reason) why Kottke thinks the announcement will be about life on another world. Here's what he says: So, if I had to guess at what NASA is going to reveal on Thursday, I'd say that they've discovered arsenic on Titan and maybe even detected chemical evidence of bacteria utilizing it for photosynthesis (by following the elements). Or something like that. (thx, sippey) Of course, the announcement could be something totally different! Or, it could be that NASA has been contacted by a warlike race of space aliens and a certain-to-fail mission carried out by a ragtag bunch of scientists is our only hope of survival. The picture, by the way, is the sun reflecting off a lake on Titan, “the only place in our solar system beyond Earth known to have liquid on its surface.” HOW COOL IS THAT?! Space, guys! Google Earth, Now with 3D Trees

If it’s good enough for every major movie in recent memory, it’s good enough for trees. Google Earth 6 is out, and features “3D Trees.” No special glasses required (and no ridiculous upcharges ). Just think, maybe some day this will be the best way to show your kids what trees look… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Justin Bieber’s My Worlds Acoustic: A Cheat Sheet

Get the scoop on the singer’s latest album, out Black Friday. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Getty Images On Black Friday, the year’s busiest shopping day by far, Justin Bieber will release his album, My Worlds Acoustic. It will feature one new track, “Pray,” as well as acoustic reinterpretations of some of Bieber’s biggest songs from his first two LPs, My World and My World 2.0. While fans have gotten the chance to hear “Pray” as well as acoustic teases of “Favorite Girl” (when he stopped by Ryan Seacrest’s radio show this month) and “Never Say Never,” his musical director, Dan Kanter, tweeted what the rest of the album will sound like, saying , “Loving the percussion… Cajones and congas! Definitely an influence from our travels around the world!” As for “Pray,” Bieber has said he was inspired by a track from the King of Pop himself. “It’s a very uplifting song, very motivational,” he said. “It definitely comes from the heart. It’s very beautiful. I definitely thought of Michael [Jackson’s] ‘Man in the Mirror’ when I was writing it.” The album, which also features “One Time,” “Baby,” “One Less Lonely Girl, “Down to Earth,” “U Smile,” “Stuck in the Moment” and “That Should Be Me,” was recorded because Bieber wanted to silence his critics . “I really think that I did an acoustic album because there’s a lot of haters out there that say, ‘Justin Bieber can’t sing. His voice is all Auto-Tuned,’ ” he said. “And there’s a lot with production, it kind of drowns out your voice, and it takes away from the singer, over the synths and everything. “I think kind of stripping it down,” he added, “and having it kind of really mellow and being able to hear my voice is why I wanted to do it.” Will you be picking up Bieber’s latest on Black Friday? Earth: what I’m thankful for today and every day

I have devoted my life to caring about the biodiversity and health of our planet and will continue to do so until the day I die. This Earth, this beautiful amazing orb in a vast universe, the source of all life, is what I am most thankful for today and every day. I am thankful for its mighty water that is its lifeblood and ours I am thankful for its soil that preserves and sustains the miracle of our sustenance I am thankful for the sun that warms us body and soul I am thankful for the wind that reminds us of its fury and power I am thankful for all creatures who live in harmony with man And I am thankful for the seed, the most miraculous wonder on Earth. From one tiny seed we can cultivate life for millions. Happy Thanksgiving to the people of Current, and thank you for another year of supporting the Sustainable Agriculture, Water is Life, Earth Care, and Solar Energy groups. May we as humans truly see how much we have to be thankful for every day and come together now to understand that in order to show that thankfulness we must treat this Earth with kindness. Ke$ha Says It’s ‘Cool’ Being Compared To Rihanna, Katy Perry

‘Out of that group of chicks, I’m the new bitch on the block,’ singer tells Complex magazine. By James Dinh Ke$ha on the December 2010 issue of Complex Photo: Complex Pop-star rivalry has been around for years. Whether it was Britney vs. Christina or Mariah vs. Whitney, there’s always been an underlying competition between your favorite female pop singers. But don’t expect any animosity between today’s stars, at least not from Ke$ha . The wilding-out singer, who’s the latest Complex cover girl, spoke with the magazine about her pop-star peers, including Rihanna, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. “I actually think that’s cool,” the singer said of the female stars she’s being compared to. “Out of that group of chicks, I’m the new bitch on the block, so I’m still getting used to being compared to some of the biggest pop stars in the world, but I don’t take any offense to it. That just means people know my records.” Earlier this year, Ke$ha teamed up with Rihanna for the Barbadian bombshell’s girl-power trek, the Last Girl on Earth Tour. Despite the duo’s pairing, the blogosphere went into a fury when Rihanna recently revealed that she “didn’t want the generic pop record that Ke$ha or Lady Gaga or Katy Perry could do.” The party-loving pop star admitted that she hadn’t even read the quote, suggesting that the media may have taken Rih’s comments out of context. “I’m so used to the media flipping my words around that I’m sure she meant absolutely no offense to me or Katy or Gaga,” said the singer. “Rihanna and me are totally cool, we were just on tour together, and I know that she and Katy are good friends. I don’t take any offense because I’m sure it’s bullsh– anyway.” Based on the garbage-bag ensemble she work to this year’s MTV Video Music Awards , it seems that Ke$ha could care less about other people’s opinions. “I was trying to look super-hot,” she said. “I like to poke fun at when people make fun of me, because I don’t take myself that seriously. People say I’m ‘garbage chic,’ so I thought I’d take it to the next level and make a garbage bag super f—ing chic — and I succeeded!” As for now, the singer is focusing on her recently released Cannibal, a companion album to her debut, Animal. Do you think there’s competition between any of today’s pop stars? Share your thoughts below! Open the floodgates! It’s Mega-Release Week, with Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and Lloyd Banks all dropping new albums. Climate change descends on Bolivia while US politicians play dumb about it

One or two years of strange rainfall patterns could be just that, and may not be an indication of a larger, catastrophic pattern. But Bolivians, especially the elderly, are reminded daily of their changing climate by the dwindling glaciers on the mountains around them. Perhaps not surprisingly, the snow-capped Andes are sacred in pre-Columbian Andean religions. The Aymara empire extended across Bolivia's highlands for several hundred years before they were conquered by the Inca, and then the Spanish shortly thereafter. Both Aymara and Quechua (Inca) traditions live on today, with many Bolivians speaking indigenous languages first and Spanish as a second language or not at all. In the last half-century, these ancient peoples have seen many of their glaciers shrink or even disappear. Perhaps the starkest example is the glacier on Chacaltaya, a mountain near the capitol city of La Paz. Chacaltaya was once home to the world's highest (and Bolivia's only) ski resort, which was built in 1938. Between then and 2009, the glacier melted and entirely disappeared. As of 2009, the ski resort's operations became limited to a small area that sometimes receives snow. A travel Web site now boasts that, “it is still fun to visit this mountain whether or not you plan on skiing,” suggesting that visitors go hiking and take in the beautiful views of La Paz and Lake Titicaca. Of course, the loss of a ski resort is nothing compared to what else is at stake. Nor is Chacaltaya the only mountain with a glacier in jeopardy. The majority of Bolivia's population lives in the highlands, and they depend on the glaciers for drinking water, irrigation, and hydroelectric power. Climate scientist Lonnie Thompson has been studying Andean glaciers in Bolivia and Peru since the 1970s and during that time, he's witnessed the formation and disappearance of rivers and lakes as glaciers melt and water evaporates. “It doesn't matter which tropical glacier you look at,” he says, noting that 90 percent of the earth's tropical glaciers are found in Bolivia and Peru, “100 percent of them are retreating in today's world.” In the first 15 years Thompson researched the Oori Kalis glacier, Quelccaya's largest outlet glacier has been retreating about 10 times faster (approximately 60 meters per year) than during the initial measurement period from 1963 to 1978 when it was about six meters per year. The accelerating rate of retreat of the Qori Kalis terminus is consistent with the observations of glaciers throughout the Andes. Thompson worries about the Andean people who live among these melting glaciers (some of whom required the team of scientists to participate in a ceremonial sacrifice of a white alpaca to ask the gods' forgiveness for conducting their research on the sacred mountain). “These people are living on the edge of survival anyway, and of course they're the first to be influenced by changes in water resources,” says Thompson. cont. added by: JanforGore

Justin Bieber Explains Michael Jackson AMA Shout-Out

‘Michael’s not your dad or anything,’ singer laughs, clarifying statement that ‘without Michael Jackson, none of us would be here.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash Justin Bieber at the 2010 AMAs Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Justin Bieber had a great night at Sunday’s American Music Awards . Not only did he perform his inspirational new track, “Pray,” at the big show, but he also walked away with four awards , including Favorite Male Artist, Favorite Album for My World 2.0, Artist of the Year and T-Mobile Breakthrough Artist. But Bieber’s shout-out to Michael Jackson left some viewers confused: Taking the stage to collect one of his trophies, he said, “Without Michael Jackson, none of us would be here.” When MTV News caught up with the superstar later in the night, he laughed off the somewhat misleading comment. “You know, I said, ‘Without Michael we wouldn’t have been here,’ but we would be here, but music wouldn’t be the same,” he explained. “I want to clarify that you’d still be born. Michael’s not your dad or anything. You’d still be here. He’s not your father.” Bieber may be here without Michael Jackson, but he says that he really wouldn’t be here without his fans. “I think that my fans have been such a supporting factor that, I mean, I couldn’t be doing this without them, so this has just been amazing,” he explained. “I owe it all to my fans, my family, my friends.” Bieber says that his dad is equally impressed by what the 16-year-old has accomplished. “He was just telling me how proud he was. I’m Canadian, so he was like, it’s like when he sees a hockey team score a goal and he jumps out of his seat,” he said. “He’s like, ‘Yes! That’s my boy.’ So it was great.” Related Videos AMA 2010 Performance Highlights Related Photos Justin Bieber’s AMA Night Related Artists Justin Bieber Michael Jackson
