‘Hobbit’ Brings ‘Impending Doom’ To Middle-Earth, Elijah Wood Says

‘There is gravity, but there’s a lot of fun as well,’ actor tells MTV News of Peter Jackson’s latest Tolkien adaptation. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Elijah Wood Photo: MTV News PARK CITY, Utah — Despite all odds, Frodo Baggins is back in the Shire … or was back, rather. Elijah Wood reprises his iconic role as the ring-bearing Frodo in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” serving as a book-ending character in scenes that bridge the gap between director Peter Jackson’s latest trip to Middle-earth and his previous one in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Wood’s role is a less prominent one in “The Hobbit,” so much so that with 100 days left of filming, his work on the film is finished. “I had my revisitation rights, and now they’ve been revoked,” he joked when MTV News caught up with him at the Sundance Film Festival . Though Wood’s return to the realm of dwarves, elves and men has reached its conclusion, the actor spent enough time on the New Zealand set to get a real sense of what “The Hobbit” is going for. Specifically, he spoke to the fact that Jackson’s latest adaptation stays true to the lighter tone of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel, largely because “the stakes aren’t as high” as they were in “Lord of the Rings.” “It’s more whimsical, magical, and a little bit more comedic,” Wood said. “The dwarves are funny and they’re kind of bumbling and they’re really playing a lot of that aspect up.” But even if the situation in “The Hobbit” isn’t as dangerous as the world-ending scenario posed in “Rings,” Wood said Jackson has managed to weave a sense of “impending doom … into the construct of the piece.” “There is gravity,” he insisted, “but there’s a lot of fun as well.” For his own part, Wood is just grateful that he got a chance to step back into Frodo’s furry feet one last time, an experience he likened to time travel. “It felt like stepping back into time,” he said of reprising Frodo. “We shot some stuff in Hobbiton, and the last time I was in Hobbiton, I was 19 … and I’m 30 now. It was a very bizarre step through a portal into time. But it was beautiful. It was great to be a part of it.” The 2012 Sundance Film Festival is officially under way, and the MTV Movies team is on the ground reporting on the hottest stars and the movies everyone will be talking about in the year to come. VIDEO: Dominic Monaghan Karaoke Raps ‘Ice Ice Baby’

Because there’s a chance fellow Hobbit Elijah Wood is going to cream him in the boxing ring tonight, let’s take a moment to give props to Fantastic Fest guest Dominic Monaghan , who threw down some Vanilla Ice in yesterday’s karaoke rap contest. With his A’s cap pulled down low ( Moneyball shout out!), Monaghan showed the room that this was clearly not his first time spitting lyrics like, “If there was a problem/Yo I’ll solve it/Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it.” At least it wasn’t “You All Everybody!”

9 Lessons Learned From the Beastie Boys’ Fight For Your Right: Revisited Film

Last night, the Beastie Boys debuted their 20-minute short, Fight For Your Right: Revisited for the masses on VH1 (the film screened earlier in the year at Sundance). In it, the Beastie Boys of old (Seth Rogen as Mike D, Elijah Wood as Ad-Rock and Danny McBride as MCA ) cracked wise to concerned parents and caused chaos in fine French restaurants. That was all before they scored acid off of a punk-haired Chloe Sevigny and watched as their future selves (played by John C. Reilly, Will Ferrell and Jack Black, respectively) pulled up in a DeLorean with a dance mat tied to the roof. New Beastie Boys dance battled old Beastie Boys and then the real Beastie Boys showed up as police officers to arrest the miscreants. Now let’s forget that flimsy plot and get down to the hard lessons taught in this music video.

Beastie Boys Unleash Celeb-Packed ‘Fight For Your Right Revisited’ Trailer

Danny McBride, Will Ferrell, Jack Black, Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood and John C. Reilly star as past and future Beastie Boys. By Gil Kaufman Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood and Danny McBride in the “Fight For Your Right Revisited” trailer Photo: Capitol Records Adam Horowitz must throw some epic pool parties. That’s one of the major takeaways from the two-minute trailer released on Thursday for the Beastie Boys’ celebrity-packed short film, “Fight for Your Right Revisited.” The trailer dropped just as fans got their second taste of Beastie goodness from the group’s upcoming Hot Sauce Committee Part Two album (due out May 3), the funktastic throwback jam, “Make Some Noise.” One of the short’s stars, “Your Highness” star Danny McBride, broke down the action for MTV News a few months ago at Sundance, dishing on his portrayal of B-Boy MCA alongside Elijah Woods’ Ad-Rock and Seth Rogen’s Mike D after the film’s debut. But even his description of the demented action in the film that chronicles what happened to the Beasties after the events of the original “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)” video in 1987 couldn’t prepare fans for the window-smashing, F-bomb dropping, “Wait, was that …?” action in the finished product. Among the other celebs popping up in the clip: Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Jack Black, Rainn Wilson, Rashida Jones, Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson, Steve Buscemi, Stanley Tucci, Susan Sarandon, Chlo

Real Housewives of New Jersey Reunion Part 2: By the Numbers

Bravo closed the curtain on the Real Housewives of New Jersey ‘s second season last night, and there were tears, fake apologies, and (best of all) one dramatic weave-pull re-enactment courtesy of Andy Cohen and Danielle Staub. In the tradition of last week’s Real Housewives of New Jersey recap, Movieline is again applying the By the Numbers scorecard to Staub’s last episode on the series ever . Here are our findings:

Josh Duhamel’s an Ass Man, and 7 Other Fun Facts I Learned From the Romantics Press Conference

Quite the bundle of talent convened in New York this morning to discuss The Romantics , the ensemble dramedy about a group of college friends who gather roughly 10 years after graduation to celebrate a wedding among them. Or maybe not “celebrate” — Laura (Katie Holmes) has some lingering bitterness over bride-to-be Lila (Anna Paquin) stealing her boyfriend Tom (Josh Duhamel). The ensuing seaside snafu ensnares pals Malin Åkerman, Elijah Wood, Adam Brody, Rebecca Lawrence and Jeremy Strong, all of whom joined Holmes and Duhamel today to meet the press.

Sookie Stackhouse & Vampire Bill Get Hitched
