REVIEW: Elizabeth Olsen Beguiles in Martha Marcy May Marlene

The opening scene of Sean Durkin’s debut feature Martha Marcy May Marlene suggests we’re in for a big rusty bread pan’s worth of rural miserablism, and even though we’re not, the yeasty grayness of those early moments is clearly intentional: A group of women in drab dresses and droopy T-shirts go about preparing dinner in a house whose unfinished interior looks either new and hastily erected or ancient and about to fall apart — it’s hard to tell which. A young boy stomps about in a dusty, scrubby yard; a woman sits on the porch working on a crocheted afghan. When dinner’s ready, a bunch of men sit down to eat; then they leave the table — the man who appears to be the leader murmurs something appreciative about the meal — and the women take their places. Then there’s one lone shot of a ton of dirty dishes jumbled into and around the kitchen sink — there’s no question who’s going to be scouring them clean. It’s as if Amishtown had been taken over by a nicer version of the Manson family.

Scotty McCreery to Tour with Brad Paisley

It’s a great time to be Scotty McCreery. The American Idol champion releases his debut album (“Clear as Day”) in a week and has also just announced that he’ll tour with country superstar Brad Paisley in 2012! Scotty McCreery in Concert Cities, dates and other details will soon be released, but Scotty has Tweeted how “it’s really humbling that somebody like him would invite me to tour w/ him,” adding: “I just hope i’m ready for any pranks he throws my way.” Since he was crowned the season 10 winner in May, McCreery’s exclusive Wal-Mart CD has sold 185,000 copies, and his first single, “ I Love You This Big ,” reached number 15 on Billboard‘s Country Songs chart. Far from shabby for the young artist.

Ashton Kutcher on Infidelity, Divorce Rumors: Don’t Believe the Hype!

As one of the most frequent celebrity Twitter users, Ashton Kutcher has taken to that social media network to sort of shoot down rumors that he cheated on Demi Moore with Sara Leal and an expensive divorce is pending between the couple. This morning, the Two and a Half Men star simply linked to a music file for the Public Enemy song “Don’t Believe the Hype.” Make of that what you will. So, THGers: Do you believe the hype? The story goes like this: Kutcher partied with Leal, 23, at a San Diego nightclub on September 23rd. He then slept with her at that city’s Hardrock hotel later that evening. The next day was Ashton and Demi’s six-year wedding anniversary, which the pair spent alone, 3,000 miles apart, because Moore was promoting Five , her Lifetime original movie (above). The actress expressed her own mysterious thoughts on the cheating rumor last week, Tweeting: “When we are offended at any man’s fault, turn to yourself & study your own failings. Then you will forget your anger.” Perhaps if these two spent more time actually communicating, and less time speaking randomly to the public via 140 characters or fewer, they wouldn’t be in the predicament. Her sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley may have been celebrities since birth, but Elizabeth Olsen insists that their fame never affected the family dynamic. “I consider myself so very lucky to have such a normal family,” the youngest Olsen sis and Martha Marcy May Marlene actress tells October’s Nylon . The 22-year-old, who attended a private school in Beverly Hills for 13 years, says she was surrounded by “super-creative” kids. Rich, famous kids. “The weird thing is that everyone’s family was a part of this industry,” she says. “Everyone is always like, ‘What have you learned from your sisters?'” “But it didn’t really have to do with my sisters at all. Like, my best friend’s father [Rick Baker] is a makeup-artist, but he’s won seven Oscars!” “Another one of my friends, her family created Days of Our Lives .” She credits her father, David, for instilling the values of hard work in the girls. “It was always very important that his daughters take care of themselves, be financially independent. Elizabeth Olsen Defends "Disturbing" Nude Scene in Martha Marcy May Marlene

Elizabeth Olsen often says that she wanted her career path of be different from that of her older sisters, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen . And with her new movie Martha Marcy May Marlene , boy is she getting her wish. In the film, Elizabeth plays a young woman recently escaped from a cult whose leader, played by John Hawkes , sought to control her body as well as her mind. Elizabeth has several nude scenes in the film, but the most bizarre is undoubtedly when her slender naked self is “offered up” to a guy as part of a kinky church ceremony. Though she had never been nude on screen before, Elizabeth says she “didn’t flinch” at doing the scene, because, well, she really wanted to creep us out: “The movie wouldn’t have been as disturbing without it,” she explain s to GQ. “Taking away someone’s sexuality, making it something you don’t even own anymore–that’s the scariest thing.” How The West Was Fun this ain’t. Two New Ferocious Stills of Jane Fonda in Peace, Love, and Misunderstanding

Once you put aside the silly Elvis Costello song title pun, the TIFF entry Peace, Love, and Understanding seems like an ideal project for all parties involved: Catherine Keener plays a conservative lawyer who, following a divorce from her husband (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), takes her kids (Nat Wolff and Elizabeth Olsen) to meet their estranged, hippie grandmother in Woodstock. That grandmother is Jane Fonda, whose new photos from the film should bring you back to a very specific, Oscar-garnering favorite from 1981. If you can’t guess the movie yet, hit yourself.
