Lady Gaga Named Billboard’s Artist Of The Year

Gaga becomes just the seventh woman ever to take home the magazine’s highest honor, which she dedicates to her fans. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images On Thursday, Lady Gaga capped off a tremendous 2010 by being named Billboard magazine’s Artist of the Year, becoming only the seventh woman ever to take home the honor since the magazine began handing it out in 1981. And in true testament to her meteoric rise to the top of the charts, Gaga’s Artist of the Year nod comes just one year after she was named Billboard ‘s Top New Artist, making her only the third act ever — after Chris Brown and Whitney Houston — to accomplish that feat. Gaga beat out heavyweights like Taylor Swift, Eminem and Lady Antebellum to take home Artist of the Year, which, according to Billboard, was bestowed upon her “thanks in part to the chart performance of her first two albums, The Fame and The Fame Monster, which rank at numbers 4 and 13 on the year-end Top Billboard 200 Albums … [and] four singles from that album, [which] appear on the Hot 100 Songs roundup, led by ‘Bad Romance’ at number 8.” The other women previously named the mag’s Artist of the Year are Swift (2009), LeAnn Rimes (1997), Alanis Morissette (1996), Mariah Carey (1991), Houston (1986) and Madonna (1985). The Billboard honor comes exactly one week after Gaga picked up six Grammy nominations , and early Friday morning, she took to her Twitter account — remember, she had been digitally dead for nearly a week — to dedicate her accolades to her fans. “Monsters have 6 Grammy nominations and Billboard award [for] ‘Artist of the Year,’ ” she wrote. “Thank you for fighting for artistic freedom and self-invention.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga

Drake ‘OK’ With Being Dropped From Kanye West’s ‘All Of The Lights’

‘Kanye’s creative process is ever-changing,’ Drizzy tells Shade 45. By Alvin Blanco Drake Photo: MTV News Even if Drake and Kanye West aren’t best friends, Drizzy still counts the Chicago rapper/producer as one of his musical idols. Drake dropped into Shade 45’s morning show Thursday (December 9) and chatted it up with host Elliott Wilson on a variety of topics, including being removed from the final version of Yeezy’s “All of the Lights.” An early version of the song, whose crowded guest list includes Elton John, La Roux’s Elly Jackson, Charlie Wilson and Ryan Leslie, had previously leaked that included Drake, but the Toronto rapper is nowhere to be found on the version that appears on West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. “Kanye’s creative process is ever-changing,” Drake said, adding that he doesn’t know why he was removed. “We make music differently. I make what comes to me and I hate changing it, whereas ‘Ye will change something 30 or 40 times to get it perfect. To each their own, and the change was to put all those people on it, and I wasn’t one of them. That’s completely OK.” Since Drake came to national prominence with the release of his So Far Gone mixtape, the MC has been compared to West — not just for his introspective lyrics, but for his overall sound as well. Back in August, Drake’s main producer, Noah “40” Shebib , relayed a story about Kanye West cursing him out for using his production style. Add to that mix the fact that Drake and Kanye have appeared on relatively few songs together — including “Forever,” with Lil Wayne and Eminem — and conspiracy theorists feel there must be tension between the two. “I can never sit here and tell you that’s not one of my idols, that’s not one of my favorite rappers,” Drake said of Kanye during the Shade 45 interview. “Whatever energy I’ve ever felt is irrelevant. When you ask me, ‘What do I think of Kanye West,’ I’mma always have something positive to say.” The host then interjected by asking, “But sometimes the energy is not always where you want it to be?” “I feel like we can co-exist,” Drake answered. “I feel like hip-hop is broad enough that we can both exist and give great music without feeling like it’s one or the other. I might be the only one that feels that way, though.” Drake stressed his reverence for Kanye West. At only 24 years old, the Canadian MC said he missed the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac era, and Yeezy is a personal favorite artist whose career he can personally trace since its inception. Q-Tip Explains His Issues With A Tribe Called Quest Documentary

‘It’s not only Tribe’s story; it’s all of ours,’ MC says of his concerns. By Jayson Rodriguez Q-Tip Photo: Mark Von Holden/WireImage Last week, Q-Tip stirred things up online when he tweeted that he was not in support of Michael Rapaport’s A Tribe Called Quest documentary . The MC and the director remained silent on the matter, refusing interview requests from a number of outlets. On Tuesday, however, Q-Tip appeared on satellite-radio station Shade 45’s morning show and explained his message. The veteran lyricist spoke with fill-in host Elliott Wilson of Rap Radar and said his opinion has nothing to do with his group being the focus of the doc, but with his role as a producer. “I’m a producer on this film; Tribe is a producer on this film,” he said. “When I speak, I’m speaking for the whole group. A lot of people think I’m speaking individually, even though I addressed it as ‘I’m not supporting’ it. In reality, as producers, there’s just different things that need to be done, edit-wise. The sentiment of the film is there. We feel like it’s 80 percent here. It’s just not there [all the way].” The Tribe MC said he and his groupmates have a final say over the project, per the agreement they made with Rapaport, an actor and first-time filmmaker. Although Tip wouldn’t specify the exact nature of his discomfort with the project, he said because the project is the first of its kind — “an extensive cinematic documentary about a hip-hop group” — it’s more than just a Tribe issue. “There’s so much riding on this,” he said. “It’s not only Tribe’s story; it’s all of ours. So we got to make sure sh– is down right.” Will you check out the Tribe documentary? Let us know in the comments. Related Artists Q-Tip A Tribe Called Quest

T.I.’s No Mercy: An Album Guide

Released as he serves an 11-month prison bid, Tip confronts his demons on introspective new LP. By Jayson Rodriguez T.I. Photo: Moses Robinson/ WireImage When T.I. announced after his release from prison earlier this year that his next album would be titled King Uncaged, the Atlanta rapper explained that the project would touch on his time behind bars but also hark back to the themes of his earlier material, which leaned heavily on street narratives. However, when he was arrested again in October — and subsequently sentenced to 11 months in prison — Tip reconfigured the album, including a title change. No Mercy arrived in stores and online on Tuesday (December 7). If the LP’s new name doesn’t convey the sentiment of the project, the content certainly does. Throughout No Mercy, T.I. is equal parts repentant about his mistakes but also fiery as he attacks his detractors, accusing them of turning their backs on him during hard times that have included two jail stints in less than 12 months’ time. “No Mercy” On the title track featuring The-Dream, Tip strikes a good balance, looking in the mirror while also turning it around on those who can’t see past his success, where he says he’s actually battling demons. “There’s no mercy for me, no crying myself to sleep,” The-Dream sings in his airy falsetto. “No mercy for me/ Nightmares have become my dreams.” “His wife and sons and daughter know that every day he tried to be a better person,” Tip raps over the measured production. “All they want is better verses/ To market to the merchants/ But when it’s closed curtains …” “Get Back Up” The theme of clemency continues on “Get Back Up” featuring Chris Brown . The sprightly number is loaded with rhymes that lash out against the media and blogs, among others, but the lyrics are conveyed in melodic tones, hushing the vitriol. The Atlanta MC, though, also shows signs of accepting responsibility for his faults, behavior that he carried over from his days in the trap: “I admit, yeah, I done some dumb sh–,” he raps in the song. “Disappointed everybody, I know/ Try not to hold that against me, though/ My road to redemption has no GPS/ So guess time must be invested for this to be manifested/ Yes, it’s hard living life in the spotlight/ Trying to dodge the haters the same time as the cop light/ The Bible says let he without sin cast the stone first/ The sinners are the ones that judge him, who was wrong first?” “Welcome to This World” No Mercy isn’t all gloom. T.I. is still an exceptional MC, and he holds his own lyrically with a list of guests that would excite a five-star hotel manager. On the brooding “Welcome to This World,” featuring Kanye West and Kid Cudi, Tip and ‘Ye trade boastful verses about the high-life. “She coming home with me, she finnin’ meet her doom,” Tip spits. “She ain’t saying I’m the greatest, finnin’ to change her tune/ The coldest and the hottest, call me December and June/ Deliver euphoria straight to your room.” “All She Wrote” On “All She Wrote,” Tip and Eminem swap bars about spending time with the wrong woman. “Poppin’ Bottles ” After jumping on Drake’s breakout 2010 track “Fancy,” the Toronto MC reunites with Tip for “Poppin’ Bottles,” a woozy strip-club anthem. “Amazing” And “Amazing” is a bottom-heavy banger, courtesy of the Neptunes, that also finds Tip setting aside the album’s weightier themes. But the best work on No Mercy stems from Tip dealing with adversity . The rapper admitted to a pill addiction in a Vibe magazine cover story and recently penned a blog on his personal website confessing that he’s “sick and tired” of being in and out of prison “Castle Walls” He teams with Christina Aguilera for the deeply personal “Castle Walls.” It’s here that Tip confronts the consequences of his actions; a captivating documentation of this chapter in his life. “Honestly, to me, I think I lose every benefit/ Of all that I’ve accomplished if my kids never win at sh–,” he raps. “Me knowing this, why should the verse I laid/ Be more important to me than the persons I raised? “I guess I’m saying that to say that opportunity today,” Tip continues. “Don’t equate to all the time it takes away from your kids.” What do you think of T.I.’s No Mercy ? Jay-Z’s ‘On To The Next One’ Is MTV News’ #8 Song Of 2010

Hov’s diabolical Swizz Beatz record (and its snarling video) blaze onto our Top 25 songs of the year. By James Montgomery Jay-Z Photo: Mark Metcalf/ Getty Images Last week, MTV News kicked off our countdown of the Top 25 Songs of 2010 , a list that’s already featured the likes of Rick Ross and Robyn, Lady Gaga and Kanye West , to name just a few. On Monday, we began rolling out our Top 10 — starting with Gaga’s “Telephone” and rolling on to Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie.” Now, we’re set to unveil our pick for #8 … Jay-Z’s “On to the Next One,” a diabolical track that floored pretty much everybody, thanks in no small part to its snarl, its swagger and, yes, its sorta-Satanic video too. First things first: Yes, this song is from an album that came out in 2009. And, yes, it was technically released to radio in December of that same year. No, it didn’t match the chart-topping success of its predecessor, the world-uniting “Empire State of Mind.” In fact, it didn’t even come close. And, frankly, with its leering, inky backbeat and macabre music video, it confounded many of Jay-Z’s most ardent supporters. So why are we still talking about it at the end of 2010? Well, why not ? Because despite everything we just mentioned, and no matter what the detractors had to say, no one can deny the fact that “On to the Next One” is a jaw-dropping piece of work. From Swizz Beatz’s serpentine track — all fits and starts, rewinds and fast forwards (and Justice samples) — to Jay’s deft, defiant wordplay (“N—as want my old sh–/ Buy my old album”) to Sam Brown’s video, which had the world convinced that Jigga was either A) a Satanist, B) a member of the Illuminati, or C) both, there wasn’t a more purposefully diabolical song released by a major-label artist this year. Not even Kanye could match its power, no matter how many King Crimson samples he threw into the mix. Because, like the title implies, “On to the Next One” is Jay-Z distancing himself from the pack, kissing the past (and his critics) goodbye and moving boldly — probably blindly — into the future. He’s over throwbacks and Auto-Tune and Cristal, and you should be, too, mostly because hip-hop needs you to be. He’s not just a rapper, he’s a cultural ambassador … and this song is proof. There’s nothing about it that’s easy to digest, but more often than not, the important songs — the necessary ones — aren’t meant to be swallowed in one sitting. They’re designed to be gnawed on, to agitate and anger and, ultimately, inspire. This is how revolutions begin and pearls are made, after all. Of course, leading a movement can be a messy affair, and Jay caught it from all sides thanks to the video for “On to the Next One,” an arty, black-and-white thing that combined cocksure swagger with images of crucifixes and bullets, Damien Hirst homages and even, perhaps, a baphomet or two. It is not, shall we say, your traditional hip-hop clip, and because of that (months after its release), Jigga was branded all sorts of nasty things, to the point that he felt compelled to address his supposed secret-society leanings on “Free Mason,” a devilish track he cut with Rick Ross . But even then, as he was (in theory) acknowledging the naysayers, he was telling them to f— off too. Take note: He said he was amazing, not a Mason. So hate if you want to. Whisper as loud as you’d like. Jay doesn’t care. With “On to the Next One,” he’s moved beyond your earthly concerns. You can drag your feet if you’d like, but eventually, you’ll be where he’s at. Only, by that time, he’ll be somewhere else entirely. That’s what the greats do, after all: They destroy, they rebuild and then they move on to something completely new. So, in a way, it makes sense that it took nearly a year for everyone to catch on to a song like this. In fact, we’re willing to bet that’s exactly how Jay-Z planned it. Kind of makes you want to invest in some white Louis boat shoes, doesn’t it? Where would you place Jay’s “On to the Next One” among the top songs of 2010? Let us know in the comments! Alex Da Kid: Dr. Dre Trusted Me With ‘I Need A Doctor’

Producer talks to Mixtape Daily about Eminem-featuring Detox track. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts Alex Da Kid Photo: Gabriel Bouys/AFP/Getty Images Behind the Beats: Alex Da Kid At this rate, Alex Da Kid might want to consider changing his name to Alexander Da Great pretty soon. The British beatsmith was nominated for two Grammys this week for his work on B.o.B’s blockbuster hit “Nothin’ On You” and Eminem’s chart-topper “Love the Way You Lie.” He also produced Nicki Minaj’s “Massive Attack.” While he only has a few placements under his belt, the producer has a knack for knocking what he does do out of the park. His next big single comes courtesy of his work with Dr. Dre. The veteran hip-hop producer invited Alex Da Kid to work with him on a track for his forthcoming Detox project, “I Need a Doctor” featuring Eminem. “That was amazing,” ADK told Mixtape Daily about the experience. “He’s one of my favorite producers of all time. Everybody knows how much of a perfectionist he is: He’s been working on his album for 11 years. For him to bring me in, trust me, not micro-manage me, and let me bring what I do to the table, I can’t even describe how that makes me feel.” The song recently arrived online, and on the number, Eminem attempts to turn the tables on his mentor. The MC credited Dre with being one of the people to help him out of his funk the past few years, so on “I Need a Doctor,” Em looks to repay the producer. “It hurts when I see you struggle/ You come to me with ideas/ You say they’re pieces, so I’m puzzled,” Eminem raps on the track. ” ‘Cause the sh– I hear is crazy/ But you’re either getting lazy/ Or don’t believe in you no more/ Seem like your own opinion is not one you can form/ Can’t make a decision/ You keep questioning yourself, second guessing/ It’s almost like you’re begging for my help/ Like I’m your leader; you’re supposed to be my mentor/ I can endure no more/ Don’t you remember who you are?” “I think it’s gonna be huge,” Alex Da Kid said. “It’s just my opinion, but it’s one of my favorite songs that I did and just what it means for hip-hop.” Next Wave of Flav

Eminem Producer Alex Da Kid Is ‘Confident’ In His Grammy Chances

Two of his songs — Em’s ‘Love the Way You Lie’ and B.o.B’s ‘Airplanes’ — are facing off for Record of the Year. By Steven Roberts Alex Da Kid Photo: Gabriel Bouys/AFP/Getty Images Producer Alex Da Kid has had quite the year, collaborating with Eminem and Rihanna on the chart-topping “Love the Way You Lie” as well as B.o.B and Hayley Williams on the equally anthemic “Airplanes.” Now that the 2011 Grammy nominations have been announced, Alex has racked up a few nods, and his two biggest hits will even duke it out for Record of the Year. MTV News caught up with Alex via phone Thursday (December 2), and he said he was extremely excited about the recognition but wasn’t surprised: He knew these songs would put him on the map from day one. “I remember sitting in the studio with Em and being like, ‘I’m writing my Grammy speech right now,’ ” Alex recalled. “He hates all that stuff, and he hates it when I say stuff like that, but I really believed in it from the start.” Alex’s first major song was B.o.B’s “Airplanes,” which he said paved the way for his second Grammy-nominated song, “Love the Way You Lie.” Eminem — who received 10 nominations himself — is featured on “Airplanes Pt. II,” and Alex said their relationship grew from there. The rookie producer faces stiff competition in the Record of the Year category — where he faces off against Cee Lo’s “F— You,” Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” and Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” — but Alex remains confident about his chances. “I mean, I think they’re pretty good,” he told MTV News of his pair of tracks. “I’m a confident person, and they’re my favorite songs out of the category we’re in, but you never know.” Do you think Alex has a good shot come Grammy night? Hayley Williams Says She’d ‘Love To See B.o.B Win’ At The Grammys

The Paramore frontwoman picked up a pair of Grammy noms, but she’s rooting for her ‘Airplanes’ collaborator. By James Montgomery, with reporting by James Lacsina Hayley Williams Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images On Wednesday night, Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams picked up a pair of Grammy nominations — a Best Pop Collaboration nod for her work with B.o.B and Eminem on “Airplanes, Part II,” and a Best Pop Performance mention for her band’s song “The Only Exception.” So, when she spoke to MTV News literally minutes after learning about her noms, the singer was understandably excited. “Oh man, it feels so good!” Williams laughed. “And I’m really proud of everything that I get to be a part of, and I love being here to represent the guys. I wish they were here.” And while her two nominations are certainly nothing to sneeze at, they sort of pale in comparison to the 10 racked up by Eminem … or the five that B.o.B got. And since Williams guested on a song with both of those artists, we had to ask her who she’ll be cheering for come Grammy night. “Well, I would love to see B.o.B win everything he got nominated for … not only is he an amazing artist and performer, but he’s such a great dude,” she said. “And we’ve been lucky to tour together and I’ve just watched him explode. He’s a massive star now, and he’s still the same guy. So I love seeing my friends win, and I’m always going to be there rooting for him.” Of course, Williams may have an ulterior motive for throwing her support behind B.o.B — after all, he did promise MTV News that if he takes home an award, he will record a song with Paramore . “Oh yeah, well I think we just entered into a verbal contract about it right here,” Williams said, smiling. “We’ll definitely do it … I love music, I love working with other artists, as long as I feel it’s true to me as well. I wouldn’t have done ‘Airplanes’ if I listened to it and thought, ‘Uh, I don’t really care.’ But I heard it and I heard something really special, and I related to it.” And just what would a Paramore/B.o.B collabo sound like? “You’d be surprised,” Williams said. “Have you heard his new mixtape yet? Just listen to that and then tell me what you think it’s gonna sound like. It’s gonna be so sick.” The 53rd annual Grammy Awards will air Sunday, February 13, on CBS at 8 p.m. ET/PT. B.o.B Promises Paramore Collabo If He Wins A Grammy

‘If I win … I will make a song with Paramore,’ the rapper tells MTV News after learning of his five nominations. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by James Lascina B.o.B Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images B.o.B certainly had that “magic” this year. The rapper got five Grammy nominations for his various efforts with everyone from Bruno Mars to Eminem to Paramore’s Hayley Williams. So, how does it feel to get all those nods? “I feel like being nominated for a Grammy is something that’s more about the music to me than anything else,” he told MTV News after all the potential winners were announced. “It’s great. It’s just like a party. It’s like being in the locker room after a football game that you won.” B.o.B’s nominations include Record of the Year, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and Best Rap Song for his Bruno Mars collabo “Nothin’ on You,” as well as Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals for “Airplanes II” with Eminem and Williams and Best Rap Album for The Adventures of Bobby Ray . Regarding his nods for “Nothin’ on You,” B.o.B said, “Bruno’s the truth, man. I’m glad we’re both nominated. It’s awesome.” Now, B.o.B admits that he doesn’t care which Grammy he takes home … as long as he wins one. “Hey, I’m nominated for a Grammy, so whatever category to go home with a Grammy is an accomplishment in itself,” he maintained. “It can be a ‘Most F-sharps Played on an Album’ Grammy nomination. As for who might take home the most awards at the event, he said, “I think that I don’t know, honestly. You never know with these things. They’re quite the elusive type of prediction to make. I can’t really say … hopefully me,” he laughed. And, if he does manage to snag one of the coveted trophies, he has a big promise to fulfill. “If I win, I’ll make another song with Hayley Williams,” he said. “No, if I win I’ll make a song with Paramore, if I win … if I win a Grammy, I will make a song with Paramore.” The 53rd annual Grammy Awards air February 13 on CBS at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
