2011 Grammy Nominations: Eminem Leads The Pack

Bruno Mars, Jay-Z, Lady Antebellum and Lady Gaga trail Em’s 10 nods. By MTV News staff Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage At this point, perhaps we can officially declare Eminem’s comeback to be complete. He’s already got the year’s best-selling album (and a pair of the biggest singles), and now, well, he’s the most-nominated artist of the 53rd annual Grammy Awards . On Wednesday night (December 1), Em picked up a staggering 10 Grammy nods, including Song and Record of the Year (for “Love the Way You Lie”) and Album of the Year (for Recovery, which is also up for Rap Album of the Year). He also scored noms for Best Rap Solo Performance (for “Not Afraid”), Pop Collaboration With Vocals (for his turn on B.o.B’s “Airplanes Part II”) and Best Rap Song (for “Lie”). Following (not so) closely behind him is Bruno Mars, who landed seven nominations, followed by Jay-Z, Lady Antebellum and Lady Gaga, who earned six apiece. B.o.B and John Legend are among the names who will head into the Grammys with five noms. The complete nominations for the 53rd annual Grammys: Album of the Year

The 2011 Grammy Nominees Revealed … Possibly

Eminem, Jay-Z, Lady Gaga and more Grammy guesses, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Eminem and Jay-Z Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage On Wednesday night (December 1), CBS will broadcast one of my favorite events of the year: the annual Grammy Nominations telecast/concert/thingy. Not only is it the unofficial kickoff of the self-congratulatory season, but it gives me a chance to wager on another largely arbitrary and oft insane awards show. So, you know, I’m pumped. After all, it’s not exactly news to readers of Bigger Than the Sound that I fancy myself quite the prognosticator, particularly when it comes to shows like the Grammys (or the VMAs ). This is partially because I consider myself an expert on these kinds of things, but also because I have a huge gambling problem. Sometimes, I even manage to hit the nail on the head, like I did with my predictions for last year’s Grammys (who among us can forget my triumphant 4-for-5 performance in Record of the Year?!?), though, more often than not, I fail miserably. Still, I keep trying. It seems I cannot turn down the opportunity to pick the nominees at crazy awards shows, and the 2011 Grammys (which will air Sunday, February 13) are perhaps the craziest in recent memory. After all, back in April, the Recording Academy — the folks behind the Grammys — decided to randomly extend the eligibility period to 13 months (from September 1, 2009, to September 30, 2010), which meant a whole lot of albums that I practically forgot about (Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3, Muse’s The Resistance, John Mayer’s Battle Studies ) were all of a sudden back in play. All of that is a rather longwinded way of saying that these picks are nothing more than informed guesses, really — though, in keeping with the general WTF-ery of the Grammys, I suppose that makes them strangely perfect. In an attempt to save myself from total humiliation, I’ve decided to tackle only the so-called Big Four categories: Record, Album and Song of the Year, plus Best New Artist. So here, for your wagering pleasure (and mine) are my predictions for the 2011 Grammy nominations. Record of the Year This is the Grammy for song of the year (in olde-tyme speak — and hip-hop — songs are referred to as “records”), though they might as well call it the Group of Death, since over the past 13 months, so many massive artists released so many massive songs. Last year, Academy voters gave the award to the Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody,” though this year, I have a feeling it could be a rapper taking home the hardware. My picks:

Nicki Minaj’s ‘Last Chance’ Gave Natasha Bedingfield ‘Goose Bumps’

British singer talks about her Pink Friday collabo with the Queens MC. By Mawuse Ziegbe Nicki Minaj Photo: John Parra/ WireImage Very few MCs are touching Nicki Minaj when it comes to stacking collabos in 2010. However, the pink-tressed raptress recently scored a team-up that was unexpected, even for her: a track with British songstress Natasha Bedingfield. The singer explained to Billboard.com that although she may be known Stateside as the crooner behind the delicate pop anthem “Unwritten,” she’s well-versed in the hip-hop game. (Incidentally, the pop song became the theme of MTV’s “The Hills,” a show that counted Minaj among its fans . “With Nicki, I come from London and we’ve got a heavy influence in hip-hop,” Bedingfield said. “She called me and was like, ‘I’d love for you to sing on this. I’m a huge fan,’ and I was instantly like, ‘I’ll do this.’ ” Bedingfield gushed that the lyrics Minaj penned made an instant impression on her. In another ironic twist of fate, the songbird laid down her “Last Chance” contribution in the lab of another Minaj collaborator, Eminem, while on the road in Detroit. Bedingfield added that she picked up on the Motor City luminary’s energy. “I heard the song she’d written and it gave me goose bumps. I was like, ‘I’ve got to be on that,’ ” she recalled. “I was in Detroit, doing some promotion, so I went into Eminem’s studio and it was amazing, really catching off Eminem’s vibe. He wasn’t there, but his studio is great.” Fans can check out Minaj and Bedingfield’s collaboration on the lyricist’s recently released Pink Friday album, while the songbird’s forthcoming album, Strip Me, will be available on December 7. Nicki Minaj Calls ‘Roman’s Revenge’ With Eminem Her ‘Coming-Out Record’

MC plays coy when asked by Power 105’s DJ Clue who the blistering Pink Friday track is aimed at. By Jayson Rodriguez Nicki Minaj Photo: Slaven Vlasic/Getty Images When Nicki Minaj was wrapping up Pink Friday, there was one last song she needed to finish: a track Swizz Beatz had sent her way that she was having trouble finishing. But after securing Eminem for what would become “Roman’s Revenge,” she was able to breathe easy. “That was my coming-out record,” she told Power 105 radio host DJ Clue in an interview airing later Tuesday night (November 23). All the pressure of putting together her album was in the past by the time she recorded “Roman’s Revenge,” Minaj said, so she was free. She secured Kanye West, Drake, Rihanna and more A-listers for the project, but the Queens lyricist more than held her own. On the blistering track, she delivers jaw-dropping lines that many have translated as an attack against Lil’ Kim . But the femcee has downplayed the tension between the two, letting the track speak for itself. When Clue pressed her about the reason for the rift during the interview, Minaj said she has moved beyond any lingering issues the two may have had. “I don’t even want to discuss it anymore,” she said. “That’s water under the bridge. I don’t think about it, only when people bring it up.” Nicki was a little more aggressive when asked about Kim in an interview Monday with New York’s Hot 97. “When you see Gaga, you see Madonna — but Madonna never hated on Gaga,” Nicki said. “Why in the black community we gotta hate on each other instead of saying, ‘Thank you for showing me love, thank you for keeping my name alive’? The same way she opened doors for me, I’m opening doors for her. Nobody was playin’ your music and you damn sure couldn’t get an interview to save your life. You getting interviews, and every time you do interviews they’re asking you about Nicki Minaj. So it’s like we help each other. That’s the point, we’re helping each other. But if you are bitter, get a life.” Don’t miss the documentary “Nicki Minaj: My Time Now,” premiering Sunday, November 28, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV! Dr. Dre Is ‘Constantly Working,’ Producer Alex Da Kid Says

‘Love the Way You Lie’ producer tells MTV News he met Dre through his sessions with Eminem. By James Dinh, with reporting by Tim Kash Alex Da Kid Photo: MTV News After years of working on his long-awaited album Detox, Dr. Dre is the epitome of a perfectionist. In addition to some rumored collaborations , the super-producer, who is set to drop the LP early next year, has been logging studio sessions with the industry’s newest hitmaker, Alex Da Kid. When MTV News caught up with the British producer at the American Music Awards on Sunday, he revealed that the duo were introduced through Eminem, who worked with Kid on the Rihanna-assisted “Love the Way You Lie.” When asked about Dre’s forthcoming project, the producer remained tight-lipped, joking, “I’m not allowed to say too much because I will get shot and killed. They have snipers on the rooftop as we speak.” Despite working with Em, Rihanna and other music staples, Kid admitted that the biggest challenge when working with the West Coast icon was overcoming his “fear of getting in the studio with such a perfectionist.” Once the duo met, Kid said his anxiety melted away. “He’s been working at this for 11 years, but once you get over that, he’s like the nicest guy ever. I can’t describe how nice he is,” he said, adding, “He just makes you feel comfortable and easy.” As a newcomer within the industry, the 27-year-old music mind said Dre’s secret to success boils down to his work ethic. “I think, basically, he works harder than everybody I know,” he said. “He’s constantly just working. I think that’s what it takes to be successful in anything, not just producing.” Detox may not be out until early next year, but fans have already gotten a taste of Dre’s Alex Da Kid-produced material, including “I Need a Doctor.” The track, which features Eminem, hit the Internet last Wednesday. The collabo coincidentally finds Slim Shady giving Dre a musical reality check about his perfectionist goals. Who else do you hope Dr. Dre will collaborate with on Detox ? Tell us in the comments! T.I., Christina Aguilera Collabo Is ‘Amazing,’ Alex Da Kid Says

‘Castle Walls’ will serve as the next single off the rapper’s No Mercy , due out December 7. By James Dinh, with reporting by Tim Kash T.I. Photo: Moses Robinson/ WireImage Producer Alex Da Kid might be relatively new to the industry, but the British hitmaker has already proven that he can strike gold when bringing together artists of different musical genres. With production credits on summertime scorchers like “Airplanes” (B.o.B and Hayley Williams) and “Love the Way You Lie” (Eminem and Rihanna), the 27-year-old music mind reveals he’s now trying his hand with another duo: T.I. and Christina Aguilera. While on the American Music Awards red carpet, Kid spoke to MTV News about “Castle Walls,” the track he produced for the recently incarcerated rapper’s forthcoming album, which features the pop star. Not only did the producer reveal that the song is set to be the next single off Tip’s No Mercy , but he also gushed about how the song will grab a variety of listeners. “It’s going to be T.I.’s next single,” he told MTV News about the collabo. “I love it. I think it’s amazing. It’s my sound, just kind of an evolution of that. I think it’ll cater to a lot of different people.” A reported snippet of the track minus T.I. surfaced on the Internet a few weeks ago and finds Aguilera gently singing over a steady, mellow beat about the downfalls of loneliness: “Everyone thinks that I have it all/ But it’s so empty living behind these castle walls (These castle walls)/ If I should tumble if I should fall/ Would anyone hear me screaming behind these castle walls?/ There’s no one here at all, behind these castle walls.” “Castle Walls” isn’t the only star-studded effort on the MC’s new album. No Mercy will also feature appearances from Eminem, Kanye West, Chris Brown and The-Dream. The ATL rapper’s collaboration with Em, “All She Wrote,” leaked online last Tuesday. Will La Roux’s Elly Jackson Be On Dr. Dre’s Detox?

‘We’ll have to talk about that at a later junction,’ singer tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena La Roux’s Elly Jackson Photo: MTV News British dance outfit La Roux are having quite a moment, and it seems to be recognized by the hip-hop community. The group’s ginger-haired, fashionista lead singer, Elly Jackson, not only appears as one of the many, many A-listers on Kanye West’s “All Of The Lights,” she’s also rumored to be appearing on Dr. Dre’s long-simmering album, Detox . Reports online say La Roux’s leading lady may appear on the Compton MC’s album, so when MTV News got a hold of her Friday (November 19), we asked her to clear up the rumors herself. She laughed, saying, “I don’t know. I don’t think … No, I don’t know. We’ll have to talk about that at a later junction. We’ll see.” While she may not have revealed details regarding the Dre rumors, she did add, “I think my facial expressions say more than my words. Nothing’s physically come out of my mouth, so it’s fine.” When pressed, Jackson played it cool, but was willing to give very vague insight into what the two of them could be working on together. “If I was to do anything with Dr. Dre, let’s just say that I didn’t necessarily do anything with him, that he might have done something with me,” she said. “But not anything new.” Two songs have already leaked from Detox , neither featuring La Roux. “Kush” features Snoop Dogg and Akon and is rumored to be the album’s first single, complete with a video reportedly being directed by Joseph Kahn. The second leaked track is Dre’s collabo with Eminem, “I Need a Doctor.” Who would you like to hear on Dr. Dre’s new album? Tell us in the comments below! Related Artists La Roux Dr. Dre

Christina Aguilera Says Her AMA Performance Will Be A ‘Spectacle’

‘You’re going to get quite the show,’ she tells MTV News of performing a ‘Burlesque’ number at Sunday’s show. By Kara Warner Christina Aguilera Photo: MTV News The American Music Awards are known for their high-octane performances , and this year is no exception, with Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Kid Rock, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Pink, Usher, Ne-Yo, Diddy and more set to hit the stage. Christina Aguilera will also be performing, doing a number from her upcoming movie “Burlesque.” When MTV News caught up with the Grammy winner/ movie newbie recently, while doing press with her hunky “Burlesque” co-star Cam Gigandet, we asked her what fans can expect from her AMA performance. “It’s going to be fantastic,” she said. “And it will give you a fitting little look inside the movie.” Aguilera said her saucy, burlesque-style dancing will set her performance apart from past appearances. “It will be another very new challenge for me,” Aguilera admitted. “My legs have been incredibly sore as I stepped into the role of Ali for this.” In the film, Aguilera plays a small-town girl with big dreams — Ali — who stumbles on a burlesque club owned by the feisty Tess (Cher). Aguilera added that, while re-learning the dance routines was grueling, the choreography is amazing. “You’re going to get quite the show,” she promised. “Quite the spectacle.” While Aguilera is new to the world of acting, Cher told MTV News that the pop star can dish it out with the best of them. “The scenes that she and I had together, I really enjoyed, and I really believe that she’s got definite chops,” she said. “We worked well together. I enjoyed all of it, and she was toe-to-toe with me the whole time.” What are you expecting from Christina’s AMA performance? Let us know in the comments! Kanye West, Nicki Minaj And Ke$ha Lead Huge Album-Release Week

My Chemical Romance also moved their album to Monday to get a jump on the holidays. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: MJ Kim/ Getty Images It happens every year around this time. No, not that food coma from too much turkey — the parade of megastar albums that drops the week of Thanksgiving. While the past two weeks have already seen the release of a number of potential blockbusters, from Taylor Swift’s instant-platinum Speak Now to new albums from Susan Boyle, Kid Rock, Rihanna, Josh Groban and Rascal Flatts, Monday’s bumper crop could help pump some life into the holiday season. After Kanye West decided to stake out the off-cycle Monday as the release date for his eagerly anticipated My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, his competitors fell in line to take advantage of the holiday-week sales rush, with Nicki Minaj, My Chemical Romance and Ke$ha pushing their release dates up one day as well. “I think Kanye will do great,” said Carl Mello, director of purchasing for the 28-store Newbury Comics chain, one of the few remaining non-big-box music retailers in the nation. “He did himself a lot of favors putting up so many tracks during the year and engaging with the audience.” Between the string of G.O.O.D. Friday releases and his headline-grabbing “Runaway” mini-movie , Mello said Kanye set the album up by whetting his audience’s appetite for months on end. As for Nicki’s Pink Friday, even though she spent the year building up cred with a series of features and her own hit “Your Love,” Mello predicted she’d do “fine” but wasn’t expecting her to put up Kanye numbers. “It’s nice to have a female rapper who is credible and has a chance at being quite popular,” he said. The bigger challenge might come for My Chem, whose Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys has gotten good buzz thanks to the speedy single “Na Na Na,” but they have been out of stores since 2006’s The Black Parade, which divided some fans. “There’s almost nothing harder to sell than something that reacted well with 13- to 14-year-olds a few years ago, but who don’t necessarily make the journey with the band over the years,” he said, noting the dive in popularity of similar bands such as Fall Out Boy and Good Charlotte. And though first-week sales of Rihanna’s Loud are not expected to be blockbuster, Mello also said he expects that album and Kid Rock’s Born Free to be solid sellers through the end of the year, along with Kid Cudi’s Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager, as well as Swift and previously released discs by Eminem and Lil Wayne. Billboard magazine Senior Chart Manager and analyst Keith Caulfield agrees that West will probably have the biggest sales week, but said Ne-Yo could also have a solid bow with Libra Scale after months of working singles to radio. While he thinks Nicki could have a good week, Caulfield was cautious about Ke$ha’s Cannibal. “She could also do well, but because she’s so track-oriented, it’s hard to say,” he said. “The best comparison for Nicki would seem to be Missy Elliott at her height with Under Construction, which sold 259,000 in its first week, and that’s when people bought a lot of records. It’s hard to gauge how an artist who, up until this point, has been very track-oriented but has an established record for a long time before releasing a proper album will do.” He pointed to fellow Young Money rapper Drake, who built his career up for nearly a year with a popular mixtape and features before releasing a full-length debut. “She’s very different. She’s colorful and versatile, but it’s hard to pinpoint how that will translate into sales,” he said, noting that “Your Love” has sold a very respectable 700,000 downloads to date. Also in the mix are greatest-hits releases from Jay-Z and Pink; Lloyd Banks’ H.F.M.2 ; the reissue of Nine Inch Nails’ debut, Pretty Hate Machine ; a Jimi Hendrix box set that Mello said is doing very well at his stores; Bruce Springsteen’s The Promise archival set; the “Burlesque” soundtrack; and next Friday, a Target exclusive acoustic set from Justin Bieber. And the hits will keep coming through the holidays, with a Christmas-themed “Glee” soundtrack on November 30 — which will also bring the latest from the Black Eyed Peas, The Beginning — followed the next week by T.I.’s No Mercy. December 14 brings the last potential blockbuster of 2010, the first posthumous album of Michael Jackson material, Michael, as well as the major-label debut of “American Idol” season-nine runner-up Crystal Bowersox, Farmer’s Daughter ; R. Kelly’s Love Letter ; and Ciara’s Basic Instinct. (All release dates subject to change.) Which new release are you looking forward to the most? Let us know in the comments!
