Lil Wayne To Perform With Eminem On ‘Saturday Night Live’

Other upcoming ‘SNL’ musical guests include Paul McCartney and Diddy-Dirty Money. By Gil Kaufman Lil Wayne and Eminem Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Music-wise, it’s been a pretty stellar year for “Saturday Night Live,” with memorable sets from Kanye West, Kings of Leon, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Arcade Fire. But things will heat up even more in December, when the venerable weekend sketch show rounds out the year with a trio of heavy-hitting host/performer pairings. The most anticipated will be the December 18 show, which The Hollywood Reporter reported will feature five-time musical guest Eminem performing the song “No Love” alongside Lil Wayne , who will be making his second appearance on the show. As of right now, the slot will be Weezy’s first major TV performance since his release from prison earlier this month. The host that night will be “Tron Legacy” and “True Grit” star Jeff Bridges, who last hosted the show 27 years ago with his brother, fellow actor Beau Bridges, marking the longest gap between hosting duties in the show’s history. Paul Rudd will make his second tour of duty as host December 11 to promote “How Do You Know,” on a night when Paul McCartney will take the “SNL” stage for the third time. And coming up on December 4 will be third-time host Robert De Niro and Diddy-Dirty Money, appearing to promote the trio’s long-delayed Last Train to Paris disc. De Niro will be promoting “Little Fockers,” which is due December 22. This Saturday’s show will be hosted by Anne Hathaway, with musical guest Florence and the Machine. Nicki Minaj Hints Lil’ Kim Is ‘Roman’s Revenge’ Target

‘My fans know who I’m talking about,’ MC tells Wendy Williams. By Hillary Crosley Nicki Minaj on “The Wendy Williams Show” Photo: FOX Nicki Minaj stopped by “The Wendy Williams Show” on Wednesday (November 17) to talk about her debut LP Pink Friday , but ultimately hinted at the target of the song “Roman’s Revenge.” “When you put out records, only the guilty ones feel like you’re talking about them,” Minaj said. “If you have nothing to worry about, if you never came out saying stuff, if you never came out saying your ungrateful bullsh–, then you wouldn’t worry about it.” On “Roman’s Revenge,” featuring a rowdy verse from Eminem as Slim Shady, Nicki embodies her Brit character, Roman Zolanski. “Word that bitch mad ’cause I took the spot/ Well, bitch, if you ain’t sh—ing, then get off the pot/ Got some n—az out in Brooklyn that’ll off your top,” Minaj rhymes on the track. Many hip-hop fans assumed Barbie was talking about Lil’ Kim , even the Brooklyn MC herself. While Nicki initially said that she was “talking about everyone who has been in interviews talking,” her chat with Williams hinted that she was aiming for a certain Queen Bee. Still, Nick seemed like she was tired of the topic. “I don’t get into that. … I feel like my music, my fans know everything that’s going on,” she told the talk-show host. “Every time I talk, every time I spit raps, my fans know who I’m talking about, what I’m talking about. I don’t have to sit up here and detail it. No. For what?” Also during the interview, Nicki got personal, admitting that her father burned down her family’s house when she was a child. “He did burn the house down. … And my mother was in the house, and she had to run out the last minute,” Nicki revealed. “But she had a dream the night before that the house was gonna be burned down, so me and my brother weren’t in the house. She had us sleep at a friend’s house. At like 3:00 that morning, they were like, ‘You gotta go down to your house, ’cause something’s happening.’ We were young, so … we ran four or five blocks, and we just saw smoke.” Nicki also added that her parents are still together, before acknowledging that her crazy characters evolved naturally. “When I first started rapping, I felt like I had to be someone,” she admitted. “Everybody was telling me, ‘Be this way. You’re from Queens, be hard.’ But, that wasn’t really me, that’s not who I wanted to be. When I changed the people who were around me, I just started being free, and I was like, you know what, I’ve always been animated, I’ve always been crazy.” Did you see Nicki’s interview on “The Wendy Williams Show”? T.I., Eminem Team Up For ‘All She Wrote’

No Mercy, due December 7, also will feature Kanye West, Chris Brown, The-Dream and Christina Aguilera. By Paul Cantor T.I. and Eminem Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ John Shearer/ Getty Images T.I. and Eminem have teamed up once again, this time for “All She Wrote,” which leaked online Tuesday (November 16). The song is from T.I.’s upcoming album, No Mercy , due in stores December 7. T.I. recently began an 11-month stint in an Arkansas prison for parole violations. His problems with the law have left him with a fair share of critics, and “All She Wrote” takes a shot back at them. Witness the song’s hook: “I don’t really care what you call me, just as long as you don’t call me broke/ I bet they knew as soon as they saw me, good night it’s over with that’s all she wrote/ Streets like cold Chicago, ain’t nothing new, I seen it all before/ But still I ball like no tomorrow, good night it’s over with that’s all she wrote.” Of No Mercy , T.I. wrote on his website: “This album represents some of my best work inspired by my most recent best and worst life experiences … I’ve been taking stock of myself and digesting everyone’s comments and criticisms. Now it’s my turn to express myself and take you into my mind.” The production on “All She Wrote” is a mellow affair, guitar strums over steady staccato 808s. It allows both artists adequate space to let their voices take center stage. Speculatively, in the first verse, T.I. addresses former Grand Hustle member Alfamega, who the Smoking Gun revealed last year was a DEA informant. T.I. raps, “Others sworn under oath or vanished left completely scorned/ You tell lies, get cut n—a, kick rocks/ You never did blend in with the big shots.” Eminem’s verses, however, deal more with the opposite sex: “I rather slip and fall in sh– than fall in love with you/ Before I f—ing tie a knot, I’ll tie you in one/ Bitch you think this is a Nintendo game, how f—ing dumb is you/ I’ll give you some lumps before I split some lump sums with you.” No Mercy , T.I.’s seventh LP and first release since 2008’s double-platinum Paper Trail , also will feature appearances from Kanye West, Chris Brown, The-Dream and Christina Aguilera. Production will be handled by Dr. Luke (“Magic,” “Right Round”), Danja (“My Love,” “Knock You Down”) and Jim Jonsin (“Whatever You Like,” “Lollipop”), among others. T.I. and Eminem last officially collaborated on T.I.’s 2007 album T.I. vs. T.I.P. on the track “Touchdown.” Which of T.I.’s No Mercy collaborations are you most excited to hear? Eminem Declares ‘I’m Back!’ With Roaring Epicenter Concert

Detroit MC puts on an energizing set, as Big Boi, DMX, House of Pain, Bush, KISS and more hit the stage on day 1 of eclectic California rock festival. By Ryan J. Downey Eminem (file) Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage FONTANA, California – Detroit descended upon California as Eminem made a triumphant return to the West Coast at the Epicenter 2010 Festival on Saturday. Marshall Mathers performed just before fellow Motor City mavens KISS, and what the rapper lacked in pyro he more than made up in fanfare. Still one of the biggest-selling artists in the world, Epicenter was one of only a handful of concerts Em put on in 2010. Cali happily welcomed Eminem back, roaring, dancing and rapping their approval. Epicenter’s first of two days was marked by sweltering heat in the 100s and a handful of performers whose absence from the stage was even longer than Slim Shady’s self-imposed hiatus. 1990s alt-rockers Bush, featuring frontman (and Gwen Stefani’s husband) Gavin Rossdale, made the fest their first major show in nine years, while House of Pain made it their first in 12 years. Oft-troubled rapper DMX rapped for a VIP-only audience. Sponsored by Los Angeles rock station KROQ, Epicenter is only in its second year and is the brainchild of the same veteran music-industry trio who put together Rock on the Range in the Midwest and Canada. Last year’s lineup included Tool, Linkin Park and Alice in Chains. This year, Epicenter moved to the parking lot of the expansive Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, part of California’s Inland Empire. The first major player to hit the main stage was one half of the mega-selling progressive hip-hop duo Outkast. Big Boi emerged in the afternoon, after opening sets from Hollywood Undead-spinoff Deuce and keyboard-heavy L.A. trio Crash Kings. Big Boi’s DJ complained about the heat nearly melting his vinyl, but the Atlanta MC smoothly mixed solo tracks into an otherwise Outkast-leaning set that included some freestyling. Papa Roach may not sell as many records as they used to, but the band received a heroes’ welcome the second they hit the stage. They’ve updated their look, too, trading the nu-metal garb for skinny jeans, hipster sneakers and longer hair, all of which suits them. They unleashed a dirtier, darker side than was apparent on their earliest hits, and frontman Jacoby Shadix was the consummate showman, leaving fans hanging on his every hand motion. “Last Resort” closed the set, sounding appropriately more raw and energized than the version on their major label debut. Gavin Rossdale may have dabbled with the band Institute and a solo career, but at Epicenter, the singer/guitarist got back to Bush, performing the music that put him all over the radio in the ’90s and touring with an opening act called No Doubt. Back then, Bush became one of the first bands to capitalize on the mainstream doors blown down by Nirvana. Bush hail from England, not Seattle, but grunge motifs are all over their numerous hits, many of which they played: among them “Machinehead,” “Swallowed,” “Everything Zen,” “Glycerine” (which Rossdale belted out solo with an acoustic guitar) and a set-closing “Come Down.” The sun mercifully went down as the second stage prepared for hip-hop headliners House of Pain, who came on after Kinda Major, Smile Empty Soul, the Knux and Big B warmed up the crowd. It’s been an eventful journey for rapper/singer Everlast, who began his career as a scrappy solo artist, found fame with House of Pain and their massive hit “Jump Around,” before reinventing himself as a guitar-slinging country/rap troubadour after suffering a surprise heart attack. Everlast had his guitar for most of the set as he led a full band (drums, bass, keys and a horn section!) flanked by Danny “Danny Boy” O’Connor. The pair rapped House of Pain songs like “Shamrocks and Shenanigans,” “On Point,” “Put Yer Head Out” and, of course, “Jump Around” over a variety of familiar songs, including the beats made famous by Dr. Dre’s “The Next Episode” and Tupac’s “California Love,” all during a rousing and lively set that included a dedication to Gang Starr’s late MC, Guru . There was also an appearance by members of their most recent project, La Coka Nostra. Expectation was palpable for Eminem’s first West Coast concert appearance this year. Video screens projected a message written as if it were taken from news headlines. The text spelled out the dark period in Eminem’s career, when retirement seemed a possibility, before heralding his triumphant return. Looking healthy and ready for battle, Eminem was backed by huge production (including several clever, stylized videos that played throughout), a hype man, a band, and even D12 for a short medley. Like his September stadium shows with Jay-Z, Eminem kept the song selection diverse, drawing from newer material and classic tracks like “The Way I Am.” The show kicked off with “Won’t Back Down” and “3 a.m.,” setting the tone for the rest of the performance. “I’m back, man,” he told the crowd early in the set. “You miss me? I missed y’all.” He led the crowd in a “Free Lil Wayne” chant as he launched into “No Love.” Em asked the crowd if they had ever “had beef” with their parents just before “Cleaning Out My Closet.” A “Big Proof Forever” message was displayed on the screen when the rest of his Detroit crew D12, including a shirtless Bizarre, flooded the stage for tracks like “Fight Music.” Cell phones and lighters were raised high during the Aerosmith-sampling “Sing for the Moment.” It was a long marathon of quality tracks during which Em proved to have as much stamina as ever, despite his lack of touring. Sandwiched right between the night’s biggest acts, DMX gave the tiny VIP tent something incredible to remember when he banged out hits like “Party Up in Here,” as well as one new track. The Ruff Ryder looked to be in good health and grateful for the audience’s enthusiasm. He made several references to his faith, thanking and praising God profusely. What can you say about KISS that hasn’t been said? The band closed the night with pyrotechnics and dependable spectacle. There’s the makeup, the production, the costumes, the stunts, the constant marketing of everything from condoms to Dr. Pepper, sure, but you know what else? There’s the songs! KISS, who have been together for close to 40 years, crafted a catalog at their height that includes lean, mean, muscular rock anthems like “God of Thunder,” “Detroit Rock City” and the ubiquitous “Rock N’ Roll All Night.” Founding members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss are both gone, but Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons still tear it up live for their the KISS Army, and Epicenter was no exception. Drummer Eric Singer has of course been part of the KISS family for a longtime and Thommy Thayer does an admirable job of filling Space Ace’s shoes, guitar effects and all. Sunday (September 26), the second and last day of the outdoor festival, will feature Blink-182 in their only North American appearance this year, alongside Rise Against, Bad Religion, Against Me! and more. ‘American Idol’ Experts Size Up Jennifer Lopez And Steven Tyler

‘J.Lo’s most likely to be the mean judge, because I don’t think Tyler is coherent enough,’ one ‘Idol’ watcher suggests. By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez at Wednesday’s “American Idol” press conference Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Once the announcement was officially made Wednesday (September 22) after months of rumors, the real debate about the new panel of judges on “American Idol” could begin. In the most radical reboot in the show’s 10-year history, host Ryan Seacrest revealed the worst-kept secret in Hollywood: Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler would be joining the “AI” panel alongside sole remaining original judge Randy Jackson. Typically, this kind of wholesale deck shuffling 10 seasons into a show’s run is a sign of desperation, a bandage to stop the ratings hemorrhaging or a last-ditch effort to recapture some elusive magic. Despite the fact that neither Lopez nor Tyler have any significant TV experience and both are past their creative zenith, Los Angeles Times pop critic Ann Powers applauded the choices and held out hope. “I think they’re both great choices,” Powers said shortly after Wednesday’s announcement. “Jennifer Lopez is someone I’ve advocated for for a long time, ever since she mentored on the show. She had a really great way with the contestants, and she’s the kind of celebrity — never super great at anything, but pretty good at a lot of things — who can really advise the contestants.” With her experience as a performer, choreographer, fashion designer, actress and frequent subject of chatter in the celebrity press over her sometimes-daring sartorial choices, Powers said Lopez is well-equipped to offer “Idol” contestants advice on style, movement and elements of pop performance that haven’t traditionally been discussed on the show. In addition, she brings another intangible that might help the show’s sliding ratings: the ability to appeal to a Latin audience. “She could really open the show up to new viewers, and I think it will be good for pop in general to acknowledge that there are a lot of Latinos in music,” Powers said. As for Tyler, 62, Powers said in addition to being one of rock’s iconic figures and a classic frontman, Tyler can also uniquely advise contestants on style and performance, thanks to his flashy wardrobe and motor-mouth persona. Plus, with “Idol” leaning toward rock in the past few years, thanks to finalists such as Chris Daughtry, Adam Lambert and Crystal Bowersox and grunge-lite winners David Cook, Kris Allen and Lee DeWyze, Tyler might be the one to, as he promised, “bring some rock to this roller coaster.” Following the departures of original superstar judge Simon Cowell, one-and-done funnywoman Ellen DeGeneres and two-season veteran Kara DioGuardi, rumors circulated about everyone from Elton John and Justin Timberlake to Harry Connick Jr., Usher, former judge Paula Abdul and returning executive producer Nigel Lythgoe possibly taking seats at the table next to original castmember Jackson. The radical shake-up comes after a season in which DeGeneres struggled to fit into the panel, often appearing uncomfortable and falling flat with her signature comedic bits. It began with the news that Cowell would be leaving at season’s end to help launch an American version of his popular English reality singing show “The X Factor,” which will also air on Fox. DioGuardi, who struggled with poor notices in her first year in 2008, began to hit a bit of a stride in 2009 but was let go with no explanation earlier this summer. Lythgoe had stated that he wanted to bring the panel back down to its original three-member configuration, fearing that the four-judge arrangement had begun to take the focus off the contestants. Entertainment Weekly reporter and “Idol” expert Michael Slezak also thought the choices, while unconventional, just might work. “The reboot last season, at least on paper, was a good thing for ‘Idol,’ ” Slezak said of the addition of DeGeneres. “But I don’t think a panel of Ellen, Randy and Kara was going to get people super excited for season 10.” And whether or not Tyler and Lopez turn out to be good choices, Slezak gave the show’s producers credit for taking a radical chance and playing offense instead of defense. “It’s them saying, ‘Let’s try to do something different going into season 10,’ instead of saying, ‘Let’s sit on our hands and hope that we’re #9 next season and #18 the year after that.’ ” That said, Slezak suspects you have to be a TV star to be a good judge and, love him or hate him, Cowell was undoubtedly an electric TV personality because he was honest, funny and credible. “I don’t know if Tyler or J.Lo are good at it,” he said. “Because it’s a specific kind of TV where you have to be really good under the gun and get out of that celebrity comfort zone of wanting people to like you, and you have to be very quick.” While both new judges have logged countless hours in front of cameras and audiences, Slezak said coming up with pithy 30-second comments in the moment in front of 5,000 screaming (or booing) audience members is a very specific talent and, so far, nobody knows if either new judge has what it takes to do it. “Idol” continued to be the nation’s highest-rated show for the seventh year in a row as season nine ended in May, but like any program facing a decade on the air, its ratings have begun to dip and its audience has gradually aged, a prospect that makes it a less attractive target for advertisers, who covet a young adult audience for their products. The most important unknown for Slezak and Powers, though, is the pivotal question of who will replace Cowell as the “mean” judge, a slot every good reality-TV competition seems to need in order to succeed. “I think J.Lo’s most likely to be the mean judge, because I don’t think Tyler is coherent enough,” Slezak predicted. If not, though, it’s possible season-long guest mentor, Interscope boss Jimmy Iovine, could serve as the go-to baddie who has to break the harsh news to the contestants. Powers is holding out for Jackson to finally break out of his nine-season funk of empty go-to phrases but said we might just have to wait until the early weeks of the season to see who has the goods to tell it like it is. “If you’re too nice, it’s boring TV,” she said. Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Drake Says His Tour Is Inspired By Jimi Hendrix

Light Dreams and Nightmares stage show “very psychedelic,” MC says. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake performs in Miami on Monday Photo: Alexander Tamargo/ Getty Images MIAMI — Drake often cites Lil Wayne, Jay-Z and Kanye West as artists that inspired his career, from his sound to his stage presence. But for the Toronto star’s new tour, Light Dreams and Nightmares, which kicked off this week in Miami, he said he drew from outside of hip-hop. The unlikely source: One of Woodstock’s finest. “It’s a really stunning setup, heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix,” Drake told MTV News. “Not necessarily in any set that he designed, but more so his music and his vibe. It’s called the Light Dreams and Nightmares Tour — it’s very psychedelic. It’s very much based on day and night, like times of day, and I carry you through a full day in the show. It’s really cool, and I’m enjoying it. It’s great to have those elements.” Drake recently visited the Hendrix grave site, he told Rolling Stone . In addition to the electric guitarist, the Young Money MC also said he’s turned to concert DVDs, including one by Eminem, to help inspire him on his headlining trek. The result is an “OMG”-like light show that’s more involved than Drake’s first solo outing, the Away From Home Tour earlier this year. He said the stage effects create a level of excitement comparable to a surprise cameo. “It’s almost like when you’re at a show and you know [Jay-Z’s] about to come out or [Eminem’s] about to come out,” Drake explained. “It’s the same thing, like I know there’s fireworks about to go off in the air or this light show is going to go off and people will love it. It’s a great experience for me as a performer. I still work just as hard, but it’s almost as if I’m performing with another element. I’m growing.” Related Photos Drake Ignites Miami Related Artists Drake
