Slick Pulla Is ‘Focused On The Greenbacks,’ Not Wacka Flocka Flame

After dropping his Slicktionary, Atlanta CTE member looks toward the future with Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Slick Pulla Photo: Black Bill Gates This Week’s Main Pick Street King : Slick Pulla Holding It Down For : CTE/USDA Mixtape : Slicktionary Real Spit : Welcome home to CTE’s own Slick Pulla. The USDA member came home in early January after spending two and half years in jail. He did three months of work release and three months of house arrest with a leg monitor. Now, he can now move more freely for the remainder of his four-year parole. The leg monitor is off and he’s ready to start touring. “It wasn’t no problems with the law,” Slick said in his Atlanta studio. “It was a possession of firearms bid due to certain circumstances. Due to a certain lifestyle, you feel that’s how you got to move. Unfortunately, I already had an ‘F’ on my report card. That’s not how the powers that be felt. I sat down. … When you go in jail, you can do two things: You can come out dumber and go back; or come out smarter and go harder for your family and loved ones. That’s pretty much the gist on that.” Obviously, Pulla is doing the latter. He just recently released his first post-prison work, a mixtape called Slicktionary, hosted by the Black Bill Gates, and is already well into recording the follow-up. Besides his music, Slick has maintained a relatively low profile — that is, except for the reports that his crew and Waka Flocka’s entourage got into a scuffle at ATL clothing epicenter Walters in March. The altercation led to gunshots, but no one was arrested. Pulla refutes talk of his involvement. “Slick’s name was in some sh–. That’s all that was,” he said. As for the “Hard in Da Paint” rapper, Pulla says the only thing on his radar right now is money. “At this present time, I’m focused on the greenbacks, the frog skin,” he said. “I got tunnel vision. I’m in a zone right now. I’m looking straight ahead. All that stuff on the left and right side, I’m not even worried about it.” Slick is looking into acting and the GA OG also just launched “Slick Prints,” his own brand of T-shirts. Joints to Check For: “Black Ice (The Preface).” “The reason I chose the beat is because how I do the music — I don’t know how anybody else does the music — it takes me back to a certain time in my life,” Pulla said. “When [Goodie Mob’s] Still Standing CD came out, I wasn’t even in the music then. I was a fan of the music. Goodie Mob, the whole Dungeon family, they set the blueprint for a lot of what’s going on today. That beat right there [‘Black Ice (Sky High)’], it brought all them times back.” “Hood Rich Freestyle.” “I did the Eminem track [‘Lose Yourself’] ’cause one day I was in the halfway house and I seen the video,” Slick recalled. “It was on ‘106 and Park’ for the ‘Throwback of the Day.’ How the beat climaxed! My homeboy was like, ‘You need to snatch that up.’ ” “On Da Radar.” “That’s just a street anthem,” he explained. “If you a hustler or about your money or whatever you do for a sack, you can relate to it. The hook goes ‘I love money/ Broke ain’t on my radar.’ I love money, I’m trying to get it up.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Exclusive: 3OH!3 Announce North American Fall Tour

The Colorado electro-party-rap duo will hit the road beginning on October 14 in San Antonio. By James Dinh 3OH!3 Photo: MTV News Everyone’s favorite area-code-named electro-party-rap duo are hitting the road again. 3OH!3 have announced a six-week trek across the United States and Canada this October and November. The VMA nominees sent MTV News a video to break the news about their next set of “rad shows,” which will kick off on October 14 in San Antonio. They aim to hit the cities that they missed on their Too Fast For Love tour which they co-headlined with Cobra Starship and Travie McCoy. “We’re doing about five or six weeks on the road,” Nathaniel Motte said. Sean Foreman chimed in, saying, “We’ve got some awesome bands; we’re playing with hellogoodbye and Down With Webster and a very special guest, depending what city you are in.” In light of the difficult economy, the duo pledged to keep their ticket prices down. “I know it’s a hard. I know a lot of times concerts are really expensive and ticketing fees are really, really expensive, so it’s shame,” Motte said. “We’re doing everything we can to keep it low. We work with a lot of independent promoters. “We’re going to find cool, creative ways for you guys to avoid ticketing fees, keep ticket prices low and give you guys the best show for your mind,” Motte continued. Foreman even joked that they’d adjust their own diet to cut costs. “We’re eating SpaghettiOs, which is totally fine, because we prefer eating SpaghettiOs.” Much like they did on Too Fast for Love, 3OH!3 plan to make this tour as much of a party as ever. “It’s going to be huge party,” Foreman said. “All the acts are so stoked to come on this tour, and we’re all going to have a good time so come out and have a good time with us.” The upcoming tour will serve as a perfect venue to showcase new material off their recently released third album, Streets of Gold, which they said was “inspired by gold.” “Some of it’s really fun and just about kind of our life on the road and parties. There’s some heavier songs [too],” Foreman told MTV News earlier this summer. 3OH!3’s U.S. tour dates, according to their label:

Drake To Head Out On Lightdreams & Nightmares Tour

Toronto MC will kick off multi-city U.S. tour, with openers the Clipse, in September. By Mawuse Ziegbe Drake Photo: MTV News Even with the breakout success of Thank Me Later under his belt, Drake isn’t slowing down this year. He’ll embark on his Lightdreams & Nightmares Tour in September, kicking off the tour with two dates in Miami. A string of dates posted on Drizzy’s October’s Very Own blog on Thursday show that the rapper will be on the tour grind until November. A rep for the Clipse, confirmed to MTV News that the Virginia duo will support Drake on the multi-city U.S. tour. The Toronto MC has spent much of 2010 living on the road. He crisscrossed the U.S. on his eco-friendly Away From Home Tour , which kicked off in April and hit colleges around the nation. Drake also showed his hometown a lot of love with his inaugural OVO Festival over the weekend, which featured appearances from a blue-chip roster of hip-hop talent including Young Jeezy, Rick Ross, Fabolous and Bun B. Jay-Z and Eminem also treated concertgoers to surprise performances. Lightdreams & Nightmares Tour supporting act Clipse have been making noise themselves with the announcement of Pusha T’s upcoming solo mixtape, The Fear of God, slated for a September 14 release. Push has also been building buzz as rumors abound that the MC has joined Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music family, a move that longtime collaborator Pharrell has said he supports. Tour dates are below. However, don’t panic if you don’t see a show in a city near you: A rep for Drake said that additional dates will be announced soon.

Eminem’s ‘Love The Way You Lie’ Clip Successfully Delivers Message, Fans Say

‘You see the bruise near her eye and it’s shocking. Shows how ugly the relationship really is,’ says MTV News commenter down.to.fly. By James Dinh Eminem (file) Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage While fans are applauding Kanye West’s innovative clip for “Power,” others are buzzing about the serious domestic violence undertones displayed in Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie” video . The Joseph Kahn-directed clip portrays the downward spiral of an abusive couple, played by Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan, as they appear to be just as much lovers as they are fighters. Reactions to the video have been strong, with many fans noting the clip’s cinematic vibe. “It was a good mini movie,” MTV News reader down.to.fly wrote. “In the end Megan’s sitting there and she looks so perfect but then you see the bruise near her eye and it’s shocking. Shows how ugly the relationship really is. Well directed,” down.to.fly continued. Another commenter was left speechless after watching the clip as he revealed it touched home in more ways than one. “This video is hot, awesome, I can’t explain it. WOW!” Queli wrote. “What a good performance, what a great message. Eminem if u see this, man I know what it is to be in a relationship like this one, I am glad I got out, hope you are as well. God bless you and Rihanna, keep on going man, you are being heard.” Emotions got the best of Mark Anthony Sanchez as he shed a few tears while watching the video. “Awesome…I keep watchin’ this over and over…I cried I ain’t gonna lie…this is his best video and for sure the best of the year….Eminem, Rihanna, Megan, Dominic, perfect,” he said. Twitter users shared their 140 characters on the clip, even making Eminem a worldwide trending topic in the process. @jhamirah was able to describe the clip in no fewer than four words, saying, “Wow. Intense. Uncomfortable. AMAZING!” @Bella31102 thought that the clip was like no other. “The most powerful music video I have ever seen!” she tweeted. Kahn’s portrayal of the couple’s abuse is not held back in the video, and that realism didn’t sit well with everyone. “I have some issues with Eminem and Rihanna’s new video. It should come with a warning for starts. I might write a blog about it. #fb,” tweeted @sapphictraffic . How do you think the issue of domestic violence was handled in Eminem’s video? ‘The Other Guys’: Five Things You Didn’t Know

Director Adam McKay explains how he recruited Derek Jeter for the film, why Paris Hilton’s scene was cut and more. By Eric Ditzian Mark Wahlberg, Will Ferrell and Steve Coogan in “The Other Guys” Photo: Sony Pictures Over the last few weeks, MTV News has taken you inside some of the summer’s coolest flicks. With secrets revealed straight from the filmmakers themselves, we’ve walked you through the creation of buzzworthy “Inception” scenes , the coolest “Last Airbender” weapons , the CGI “Eclipse” wolves , and much more. Today we turn our attention to “The Other Guys,” the Will Ferrell- and Mark Wahlberg-starring action comedy that just opened in theaters. Co-writer and director Adam McKay gave us a call to discuss some of the key decisions he and his team made as they put together their new film. Check out these five secrets he revealed for us, and check back on Monday to hear five spoiler-heavy secrets that are simply too juicy to drop today. How the Curse-Heavy Flick Got a PG-13 Rating It’s hard to believe that “Other Guys” isn’t rated R, based on all the foulmouthed dialogue the cast spouts. As McKay told us, they worked hard to get the dirtiest PG-13 film they possibly could. “We became masters of the family-friendly cursing from writing on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ ” he said. “We found every possible way to say something awful. We don’t say ‘f—‘ in the movie, but I love that it feels like we do. We say ‘s–t’ a lot. In PG-13, you’re allowed to say ‘sh–‘ a lot. Endless ‘sh–s.’ ” “In one scene, we had a character say ‘lick the sex off each other.’ We had to change that just to ‘lick the sweat.’ There was one time someone says, ‘I hope you like prison food and penis.’ Originally it was, ‘I hope you like the taste of prison food and penis.’ We had to lose ‘taste.’ You want to get as close to R as you possibly can.” Why Paris Hilton’s Cameo Is Missing We’ve long known that Paris Hilton shot a cameo for the movie, but her scene didn’t make it into the final cut. So what happened? “The joke was that Mark’s character shot Derek Jeter, so you’re looking for a redemptive moment for him. During this helicopter crash, a piece of the helicopter shoots at this unknown blonde woman and Mark dives and saves her. It’s Paris, and he doesn’t know who she is. We cut to a spinning headline that says, ‘Cop Who Shot Jeter Saves Paris Hilton,’ and then you pan below that and it says, ‘City Hates Him Even More.’ ” “I thought it was really funny,” he continued. “But she’s such a figure unto herself, it just threw the rhythm off somehow. She was a champion. She was totally making fun of herself. That scene will be on the DVD.” How They Recruited Derek Jeter While Paris’ cameo didn’t make the finished flick, Jeter’s most certainly did. How did McKay convince the Yankee captain to agree to a cameo that has him getting shot in the leg? McKay gave us the inside scoop. “Of all the cast we got for this movie — and we got some pretty tremendous people — Derek Jeter was the most essential get for the whole movie,” he said. “We wrote it into the script that he was a major part of the story. He’s a fan of Will and the movies we’ve done in the past. He’s a fan of Mark.” “The crazy thing is [the Yankees] won the World Series, and we’re shooting a scene about 10 days afterward,” he added. “I’m like, ‘How does this guy come off that — there must be crazy parties, he must be exhausted — and then show up and have his lines memorized?’ Sure enough, he was there and he was game. Professional athletes tend to fall into one of two categories. They’re either super-conceited and standoffish, or they can be sweet and nice. He’s definitely a sweet guy, very unpretentious. His girlfriend [Minka Kelly] is beautiful and just goofy and nice. He’s a fan. He’s hosted ‘SNL.’ He’s got that sincerity that just works if he’s delivering a line straight. He’s an old-fashioned baseball star.” Why Mark Wahlberg Is Funnier Than You Ever Realized Wahlberg has done the comedy thing a bit before, whether on “SNL” or this year’s “Date Night,” but he’s never so fully embraced a comedic role. Perhaps the most pleasant surprise of “Other Guys” is that the Oscar-nominated actor is damn funny. “The second I saw Will and Mark together, it was just a completely different energy,” McKay said. “In a weird way, almost the last two guys in the world you’d expect to see together. That’s what made it so fascinating. Mark has the confidence of someone who could kick anyone’s ass in the room. And Will has the confidence of someone who doesn’t want to kick anyone’s ass in the room. The two of them together are instantly interesting. The big secret we knew is that Mark’s really, really funny.” “So it wasn’t as risky as it might have seemed from the outside, because people associate him with dramatic roles or action stuff,” he continued. “I loved him in ‘I Heart Huckabees.’ I thought he was hilarious in ‘The Departed,’ and I thought he was really funny in ‘Boogie Nights’ … he gets the joke. He knows what he’s messing around with. I think his theory is that anything that can be parodied about you should be shaved away anyway. I don’t think he minds going after the fluffy parts of his own image. We had him do some crazy sh– in this. He danced ballet. We got him a ballet coach and he learned moves. There wasn’t one moment where he was like, “Come on guys, I can’t do this.” He would do anything.” Why the Credits Are So Fact-Filled At the end of the movie — which centers on a Madoff-esque Ponzi scheme — McKay goes all Morgan Spurlock on us, introducing a series of wacky, graphic-heavy factoids about the financial crisis. Turns out that the credits idea came about after production wrapped and McKay got into the edit room. “It came out of the fact that we wanted to do something different for the credits,” he told us. “Playing alternative improv takes has been done to death. I actually love ‘Harper’s Index.’ It’s wildly entertaining to read, as well as educational. We contacted [visual effects firm] Picture Mill and said, ‘Can we do a “Harper’s Index” thing with the credits but do it fun and poppy and colorful?’ We wanted a ‘Pink Panther’ feel to it.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Other Guys.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Eminem’s ‘Love The Way You Lie’ Isn’t First Video To Deal With Domestic Abuse

Ludacris, Eve, Ashanti, Dixie Chicks have also dealt with the issue in their clips. By Gil Kaufman Rihanna in Eminem’s “The Way You Lie” music video Photo: Danny Mayer/ Eric Ford/ On Location Photos The shocking images of domestic violence in the new Eminem/Rihanna video for “Love the Way You Lie” have sparked a heated debate online about the depiction of an abusive relationship in a music video. And though Slim Shady has chronicled his contentious relationship with twice-ex-wife Kim Mathers throughout his career, the “Lie” video is certainly not the first time the topic has been dealt with in a video. The clip for Ashanti’s 2003 song “Rain on Me” also depicted the seesaw battle between intense love and physical violence, as the singer moved from hugging and holding hands with her video boo to using makeup to cover the bruises and scars after their altercations. Similarly, Ludacris’ collabo with Mary J. Blige on 2006’s “Runaway Love” showed teenage runaways who fled their homes after abuse at the hands of their stepdads and mothers’ boyfriends, who also laid hands on their mom. The topic has been ripe for other rappers, including Eve , who released “Love Is Blind” in 2000, which chronicled her anger at the abuse suffered by one of her friends from an abusive boyfriend and her plot of revenge against the abuser. The topic has also been ripe for country artists, including the Dixie Chicks , who took a kitschy, “Thelma & Louise” approach to the subject in their “Goodbye Earl” clip, in which the battered woman gets her revenge for landing in intensive care after a beating. In the video for 2002’s “Family Portrait,” Pink and her childhood doppelg

‘Love the Way You Lie’ Joins List Of Memorable Joseph Kahn Videos

Kahn has directed videos for Britney Spears, Eminem, and Lady Gaga. By James Dinh Rihanna on the set of the “Love the Way You Lie” music video Photo: Danny Mayer/ Eric Ford/ On Location Photos After much anticipation, the Joseph Kahn-directed video for Eminem and Rihanna’s chart-topping “Love the Way You Lie” debuted Thursday (August 4) on MTV. In the song, Em and Rihanna tell the intense story of a woman who stays with her male counterpart despite his violent habits. The video shows Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan engaging in a relationship that’s similarly emotionally destructive. Kahn, who has worked with everyone from Janet Jackson to Rob Zombie, has a particular directing style that emphasizes CGI special effects and futuristic styling. Here are a few other highlights from his career. Britney Spears, “Toxic” In the 2004 clip for Spears’ flashy “Toxic,” the pop princess played an assassin on a quest to poison her cheating boyfriend. The clip employed eye-popping costumes for Spears — including a stewardess outfit and a glittery bodysuit — and quickly rose to the top of the pop princess’ videography. “The plot is pretty nonsensical. It’s just fun. [It’s like] James Bond flicks and sex,” Kahn told MTV News . Years later, the director would collaborate with Spears on the clip for “Womanizer” — in which he slyly referenced their earlier collaboration. U2, “Elevation” U2 went on a ride like no other when they joined forces with “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” for the 2001 video promoting “Elevation.” A call from an “evil Bono” set the mood for the action-filled video, which features the band on a rescue mission with Angelina Jolie thanks to Kahn inserting members into scenes from the film. With the help of Ms. Croft, U2 dodges the dangers of the bad Bono, although eventually good and evil come face to face in a battle of stereo and vocal power. But the good guys win out, and the band walks into a calm street that has cars and elephants floating overhead. Eminem, “Without Me” For most of Eminem’s career, the rapper has played the funny guy in his music videos. His clip for the 2002 hit single “Without Me” went further than mere gags, asserting his ability to poke fun at the controversies surrounding his music. Throughout the video, Em parodies a comic-book hero on a mission to save a young boy from listening to a copy of The Eminem Show , which is labeled with a dreaded ‘Parental Advisory’ sticker. While on his quest, Em manages to sleep with porn stars, practice yoga and appear on “The Real World.” Enrique Iglesias, “Hero” Understandably, Enrique Iglesias’ music videos have showcased his good looks and suave persona. His 2001 clip featured Jennifer Love Hewitt as the singer’s love interest and other half of a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde. The two are on the lam from Mickey Rourke, woh heads a rival group of bandits. After some steamy scenes with Hewitt, the pop star is found by Rourke’s gang and apparenly killed by them. Lady Gaga, “LoveGame” If there’s one thing Lady Gaga reps for, it’s the busy streets of New York City. Before the days of her music videos doubling as mini-movies, Kahn helped the singer take a journey through the Big Apple’s underground in a video that recalls Michael Jackson’s also-subway-set “Bad.” Accompanied by her crew of dancers, the singer drops it low in a subway station and dances the night away. “I worked with Joseph Kahn, and he did an amazing job. He didn’t just capture the fashion; he captured the artist,” Gaga told MTV News . What’s your favorite Joseph Kahn-directed music video? Let us know in the comments!
