Maroon 5’s ‘Misery’ Video: Watch Behind-The-Scenes Footage Now!

Video premieres Thursday on MTV.com! By James Montgomery Maroon 5’s Adam Levine in “Misery” Photo: A&M/ Octone By now, you’re probably aware that Maroon 5’s new video, “Misery,” is a pretty action-packed affair, featuring frontman Adam Levine being tossed off of buildings, slapped around and dodging oncoming traffic. “We decided to focus on violence instead of sex this time around,” bassist Mickey Madden joked to MTV News last month. “We like to switch it up,” Levine added. “The next one will be about drugs.” We’ll just have to see about that one … but in the meantime, you can watch some exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage of the “Misery” clip right now, because MTV News was there in May, when the band shot the video. Maroon 5 worked with noted director Joseph Kahn — who’s helmed clips for the likes of 50 Cent, Britney Spears, Eminem, Muse and U2 — on the clip, which must have been an experience all its own. After all, not only has he worked with the biggest names in the biz, but he actually dreamed up the violent concept behind “Misery.” “The cool thing is, when Joseph wrote the treatment … after reading a few sentences, I thought it was really amazing,” Levine said. “He’s awesome. He’s really enthusiastic and creative and awesome and fun. We’ve never worked with him before and he’s a very big video director, so it’s great to finally get to do something with him.” “He’s put all of this together impressively, quickly and effectively,” Madden added. “It’s pretty awesome to see.” The full “Misery” video will premiere tomorrow on MTV.com, but you’re going to have to wait a bit longer to hear their new album, Hands All Over, which isn’t due until September. Miley Cyrus: Tamed by Eminem and Drake!

Miley Cyrus has made it painfully clear for weeks now: she simply cannot be tamed. But while this may be true in her wardrobe choices , the singer was cut down to size on the music charts last week. Her latest album, “Can’t Be Tamed,” finished third in sales, behind Eminem’s “Recovery” and Drake’s “Thank Me Later.” It was expected that Eminem would lead the way, but not by this wide of a margin. His new CD had the biggest opening week of any in 2010, moving over 753,000 copies. As for Miley? She has to be disappointed, as “Can’t Be Tamed” sold just 106,000 albums. That’s an astounding 250,000 fewer than Cyrus’ 2008 effort, “Breakout.” Miley’s fans will surely complain about our biased coverage now and make up excuses for their favorite artist. And that’s fine, that’s their right and we admire their passion. But numbers don’t lie : recent poll results show 70% of respondents laugh at the idea of Cyrus as a role model; moreover, her new CD actually sold fewer copies than her previous CD sold in its second week of release. As we’ve been saying all along, is it possible Miley’s new image may have gotten her attention, but turned away her fan base? Might she have been better served by slowly evolving as an artist, as opposed to pulling every transparent, cheap trick in the book just to prove she’s changed? These are questions Miley, her handlers and her cult-like followers will need to consider carefully.

What Will B.o.B’s Next Hit Be?

The star says ‘Don’t Let Me Fall’ is the song fans have ’embraced naturally’ By Mawuse Ziegbe with reporting by Kelly Marino B.o.B Photo: MTV News B.o.B. has had a breakout year with his chart-topping debut B.o.B. Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray , which has yielded the hits “Nothin’ On You” and the Hayley Williams-assisted “Airplanes” . The ATL star already has a couple of scorchers under his belt, but he’s still deciding between two other cuts from Bobby Ray for his next single. The MC said it’s a tossup between “Magic” and “Don’t Let Me Fall.” “I think ‘Magic’ is one where, in terms of the pop crowd, it’ll really be the hit, the record of choice,” B.o.B. told MTV News Sunday on the 2010 BET Awards’ red carpet, flanked by fellow Grand Hustle artist Ricco Barrino. “Magic” may have pop appeal and a feature from Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo, but the MC said that fans have already connected with “Don’t Let Me Fall.” “I think ‘Don’t Let Me Fall’ is the song that people just kinda embrace naturally. It doesn’t even have to be pushed or on the radio,” B.o.B said, adding that the crowd response for “Don’t Let Me Fall” parallels his earlier hits. “When I perform and do shows, people sing ‘Don’t Let Me Fall’ just as much as ‘Nothin’ On You’ and ‘Airplanes.’ ” The Atlanta MC didn’t have much time to think it over, since he then went on to wow the audience with his performance at the 2010 BET Awards . The rookie rapper teamed up with venerable hip-hop superstar, Eminem — who also makes an appearance on Bobby Ray — and recruited R&B songstress Keyshia Cole to step in for Hayley Williams for a performance of “Airplanes, Part II.” What do you think B.o.B’s next single should be? Eminem Joins B.o.B At BET Awards For ‘Airplanes’/ ‘Not Afraid’ Medley

Keyshia Cole takes over for Paramore’s Hayley Williams on the chorus. By Hillary Crosley Eminem performs at the 2010 BET Awards Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage Not only did B.o.B get a chance to perform his hit “Nothin’ on You” during the BET Awards pre-show , but the rookie MC also brought out Keyshia Cole for his hit “Airplanes” during the main show. After an introduction by T.I. and Queen Latifah, during which the pair jokingly referenced T.I.’s arrest for gun charges before the 2007 BET Awards , B.o.B began his set by playing the piano. Cole launched into the song’s chorus, surprising the audience, since she’s been out of the spotlight following the birth of her first child with basketball player Daniel Gibson. Sporting blond hair, a textured red skirt with a black top and matching stilettos, Cole gave “Airplanes,” which originally featured Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams, a soulful spin through her trademark vocal runs. Once Cole and B.o.B reached the chorus, Eminem joined the duo onstage for his verse on the track’s remix. Then, the music ran seamlessly into Em’s newest single, “Not Afraid.” The Detroit MC recently appeared on the “Late Show With David Letterman” to promote his and Jay-Z’s upcoming concerts at New York’s Yankee Stadium and Detroit’s Comerica Park. On Sunday night (June 27), wearing a black jacket with a white tee and jeans, the MC ran through “Not Afraid” backed by a five-piece band and a gospel choir. Rhyming with a reserved and controlled energy, Eminem ended his performance of the emotional track to a standing ovation. What did you think of B.o.B’s and Eminem’s performances? Jay-Z, Eminem Visit ‘Late Show With David Letterman’

Appearance included the duo’s performance atop the Ed Sullivan Theater and a ‘Top 10 List’ read by Eminem. By Hillary Crosley Eminem and Jay-Z perform on the “Late Show with David Letterman” Photo: Matthew Simpson/ CBS After selling out their upcoming concert at New York’s Yankee Stadium before tickets even officially went on sale, Eminem and Jay-Z took the stage on the “Late Show With David Letterman” Friday night. The two veteran MCs are promoting their co-headlining hometown stadium performances in Detroit’s Comerica Park and Yankee Stadium this September. Eminem, sporting a black jacket, jeans and a white shirt, began by presenting the comedic “Late Show Top Ten” list segment featuring his “Pieces of Advice for the Kids.” “If I sign something for you and I see it on eBay, when you go home, I’m gonna be under your bed,” Eminem joked, struggling to keep a straight face. He continued with, “Always purchase music through authorized retailers that pay royalties to the artists,” and “Remember the magic words: ‘Please,’ ‘Thank You’ and ‘Step Off Bitch.’ ” Jay-Z followed Em by sitting down and chatting with Letterman about his and the Detroit MC’s working relationship. “We did a song on my album called Blueprint — the first one, I’ve got a lot of them — called ‘Renegade’ and it was good,” Jay said. “When you make good songs, you become friends.” Letterman then asked why the pair are just deciding to tour together now. “Em is a notorious non-tourer,” said Jay. Later, Hov almost argued the positives of NBA baller LeBron James leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers and joining the New Jersey Nets, which the rapper co-owns, before stopping himself. “There’s rules and guidelines that I want to be very certain to follow,” Jay told Letterman. “Everyone would love to have a LeBron James on their team. He’s a free agent come July 1. We’re gonna try after July.” Letterman disagreed with Jay’s interest in James, saying, “If LeBron James wants to be a guy, he will stay where he is and not cut the heart out of that city by leaving Cleveland.” At press time, the basketball player’s decision is still anyone’s guess. Then Jay and Eminem’s pre-taped performance rolled. The gents played three songs with a live band, opening with Eminem’s latest single “Not Afraid” before moving into Jay’s “On to the Next One” from 2009’s The Blueprint 3. As a grand finale, the pair performed “Renegade,” their first collaboration from Hov’s 2001 album The Blueprint. The mini-concert was originally filmed earlier this week atop the Ed Sullivan Theater . Eminem Honors Dr. Dre At ASCAP Awards Ceremony

‘He changed the face of music and he changed my life,’ Eminem says. By Kelly Marino Dr. Dre Photo: MTV News It’s been over a decade since his last solo album, but when Dr. Dre was honored with ASCAP’s Founders Award Friday night, it was a reminder to everyone that the doctor is still one of hip-hop’s biggest pioneers in the game today. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers held it’s 23rd annual Rhythm and Soul Music Awards last night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, where some of music’s biggest names were recognized for their contributions to music. The biggest award of the night was handed to Dr. Dre for his achievements in the music industry and for inspiring and influencing his fellow music makers. The ASCAP association put together a presentation package that played across the big screens, highlighting some of Dre’s greatest quotes. One moment that had the audience cheering was Dre’s stab at critics, saying, “You can’t critique my sh– unless you have done half of the stuff I have accomplished.” Shortly after the piece ended, DJ Kid Capri took the stage to perform a set of songs chronicling Dr. Dre’s career that included early hits such as “Keep Their Heads Ringin’,” “Let Me Ride,” and “Gin and Juice” as well as more recent Dre productions such as “In Da Club,” “Family Affair,” and “Rich Girl.” Eminem made a rare, surprise appearance to present the award to Dr. Dre, whom he thanked for believing in him. “It would have been a lot easier for Dre to dismiss me like most people did,” Eminem stated. “But he didn’t. He stepped up to the challenge because he saw something in me. … He changed the face of music and he changed my life.” Dre then took the stage to accept the award, pausing during his speech as he fought back tears. “I’m living an incredible life,” he said. “Making a living doing what I love and having people love it. I can’t even explain what that feels like.” Dre went on to pay respects to his mother, who became pregnant with him at the age of 15. “She was always told by family, friends and neighbors or whatever, she was going to ruin her life and mine,” he said. He also thanked his wife, whom he described as his in-house A&R and playfully promised her he was going to give her “something real special for this tonight.” Closing out his speech, he thanked Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope-Geffen-A&M Records, for being with him through his ups and downs, and last but certainly not least, his fans. Some of the other top awards handed out Friday were Songwriter of the Year, which Jimmy Jam presented to Ne-Yo and the hit-making duo C. “Tricky” Stewart and The-Dream, who tied with six chart-topping singles each. T.I. graced the stage to present fellow Atlantans Jermaine Dupri, Johnta Austin and Manuel Seal with Song of the Decade for “We Belong Together.” Matthew “Boi-1da” Samuels was honored for last year’s smash hit “Best I Ever Had,” which he wrote for Drake. “Blame It” by Jamie Foxx and featuring T-Pain earned writers Christopher Henderson, Brandon “Note” Melancon, The-Dream, C. “Tricky” Stewart, and Nate Walka the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Song of the Year. And Big Boi presented the ASCAP’s Vanguard Award to his friend and “high funktress” Janelle Monae, who accepted the award on behalf of her team the Wondaland Arts Society. Eminem Talks ‘Recovery,’ Touring Sober

‘Everything right now is a step at a time,’ the MC tells ‘Billboard.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Eminem on the cover of Billboard Photo: Billboard Eminem graces the cover of the new issue of Billboard . In the accompanying interview, the Detroit rapper discusses his struggle to return to rap dominance after a five-year hiatus to combat his drug dependency. Last year he returned with Relapse , an uneven collection that at its best lucidly detailed the depths of his battle and at its worst came across as hackneyed. On the recently released Recovery , Eminem decided to return to to his earlier work for inspiration. “I would go back and listen to songs off The Marshall Mathers LP , The Eminem Show , and some of Encore and ask, ‘Why don’t my music feel like this anymore?’ ” Em said. “”‘The Way I Am,’ ‘Criminal’ and ‘Toy Soldiers’ were songs that meant something. I wanted there to be a reason why I was making each song, instead of making it just to make it.” During the recording of his two albums prior to Recovery , Em said, he was either in full-blown addiction mode ( Encore ) or so freshly sober ( Relapse ) that he was unable to focus correctly on the material he made. “I was like, ‘S—, man, trees are beautiful again,’ ” Em said, describing the way he viewed the world during the making of Relapse . “‘What a nice day it is.’ I don’t think I was paying attention to what the average listener might like or not like.” Em said that he now wants to focus on earning the praise of his peers and die-hard fans with Recovery . Then, he’ll focus on hitting the road. He’s set to appear at music festivals both abroad and in the United States this summer, and he’s playing shows with Jay-Z in Detroit and New York in September. But the superstar MC is cautious about returning to a major touring schedule. “I’ll do these shows and see how I feel afterward, then set up a couple more,” he said. “I’ve had to relearn to do shows sober, because there were so many years that I didn’t know how to do it. Alcohol, Valium — all these things were crutches for me so that I didn’t have to feel anything when I went onstage. Everything right now is a step at a time, a day at a time.” Are you going to see Eminem perform soon? Sound off in the comments below! Related Photos The Evolution Of: Eminem Related Artists Eminem

How Can We Stop Eminem from Being ‘Funny’ on TV Again?

Eminem’s rapping talent is inarguable. I’ve seen him do it! You have to trust me here. He’s deft, aggressive, even poetic sometimes, but what is it about rapping that makes the 37-year-old artist feel qualified to attempt sketch comedy on television? Eminem usually does such a good job of convincing me that he doesn’t give a f*ck, but his frequent detours into TV comedy send the wrong message: that he’s actually kind of desperate to entertain, even if he feels awkward doing it. Now he’s scheduled to read off one of David Letterman’s Top 10 lists, and its preview proves to be another in a comedy career that has yet to take off. Come with me on a narrated tour of Em’s laughless TV past.

Jay-Z, Eminem Announce Two More Hometown Stadium Dates

Home and Home Tour dates are now September 2 and 3 in Detroit, September 13 and 14 in New York By MTV News staff Eminem and Jay-Z Photo: Getty Images In response to the demand for pre-sale tickets, Jay-Z and Eminem have added second dates to both of their Home and Home Tour stops, which will take place at Detroit’s Comerica Park (now September 2 and 3) and New York’s Yankee Stadium (September 13 and 14). Tickets for all four shows will go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. on LiveNation.com. Earlier this week, the pair taped a performance for the “Late Show With David Letterman” that will air Friday night. When the stadium dates were first announced, Eminem said in a press release, “This is a once-in-a-lifetime set of shows and I know we’re both really going to bring it to our hometowns. The fans are going to love this and so am I. It’s gonna be historic.” “These shows are like a dream come true,” Jay-Z offered. “I’ve always hoped that hip-hop could play any stadium like other genres of music. How perfect is it that Eminem and I get to play our hometowns and show how far the live rap experience has come? Fun and historic — a great combination all around the board.” Speaking with ESPN’s Dave O’Brien and Rick Sutcliffe during a game between the Yankees and the Tigers, Eminem said of the event, “We had talked about doing something together again soon anyway — we just tried to come up with the best way and biggest way to do it. “We’ve done things together, smaller shows and whatnot,” he continued. “But I’m not sure we’ve ever done anything this big.” “I look for opportunities to work with Em,” Jay-Z added. “Any time we get a chance to collaborate on things …” Em and Jay have teamed up onstage before , performing “Renegade” together at a “DJ Hero” event last June. Justin Bieber? Kanye West? Who Will Be The Next To Sell A Million The First Week?

Our experts also cite Taylor Swift, a posthumous Michael Jackson release, Lil Wayne again — or maybe no one. By Shaheem Reid Justin Bieber Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images While Drake’s Thank Me Later didn’t sell a million copies in the first week, the debut moved more than 460,000 units and landed at #1 on the Billboard albums chart . That’s an amazing feat for any artist, let alone a rookie MC. Meanwhile, Hits Double Daily is projecting a monster launch for Eminem’s Recovery, which was released Monday, selling between 590,000 and 615,000 copies by this time next week. Drake and Em have proven that, despite an overall decline in record sales, artists who are able to engage fans and produce high-quality music will be rewarded on the charts. However, a huge question remains: Will anyone be able to knock Lil Wayne from his spot as the last artist to sell 1 million copies the first week of release? Weezy reached that milestone back in 2008 , when Tha Carter III came out. And while Kanye West’s Graduation came within an eyelash of hitting the mark several weeks later and others, such as Susan Boyle, have put up monster first-week numbers, no one besides Wayne has cracked a milli. XXL magazine’s Bonsu Thompson knows just the man up for the task: None other than Kanye West, whose song “Power,” from his upcoming LP, has already garnered critical acclaim. “In order to sell a million albums, your momentum has to be working on all cylinders,” Thompson said via e-mail. “Kanye’s range is built for that. Musically, he has the ability to simultaneously have an infectious record in the streets and a monstrous record on radio and television loop. Add in his penchant for controversial quotes (he’s got a ton to address) and bringing the fashion and arts world wherever he goes, and it’s a home run (Barry Bonds).” “It’s easy to say no one will ever hit that mark again, but there will always be someone,” said Jon Caramanica, a music critic for The New York Times. “Right now, Justin Bieber has the best chance and also Taylor Swift with her next album. Rappers are in danger.” Vibe Editor in Chief Jermaine Hall said the next person to sell a million copies the first week will either be the man with the biggest-selling solo LP of all time or the last guy to reach a million sales the first week. “It’s tough to say, based on music’s economical climate,” Hall said. “Certainly, if Sony is able to get something out on Michael [Jackson] by the fourth quarter with a solid single, that would be a contender. Outside of that, Wayne’s Carter IV also has to be considered. If he has a lead record anything close to the impact of ‘Lollipop,’ he will be knocking on that door.” Other industry insiders are way more pessimistic. “I don’t know if it’s possible for an artist to sell a million records again in a week,” XXL Editor in Chief Vanessa Satten said. “Seems to me, sales are not an issue anymore, and no one wants to say that. We still stress over sales when we’ve had the Drake and Eminem albums for weeks. Sales are not the issue anymore, so I don’t know if that million in a week is feasible anymore.” “I think Wayne is probably the last one to do that,” ThisIs50.com’s Jeremy Bettis agreed. “I don’t think people should pay too close attention to the numbers. I don’t think the numbers should take away from the actual project. I think that’s the problem with hip-hop. Everyone wants to know: ‘What’s his first-week numbers?’ If it’s not what they think it should be, then they have a judgment about the album, which I think takes away from the project and the actual creativity of the music.” “That 1 million that Wayne did was so out of this world, I don’t know that’s gonna happen again,” radio personality Miss Info said. “I don’t know that’s a fair bar to set. … I don’t think the emphasis at this point is even on sales. It’s about: ‘How many stages are you gonna pack? How many endorsement deals are you gonna have? How many companies are you gonna launch?’ ” “I think, even for record labels, it’s gonna be hard to see who sells a million,” said Angela Yee who host the Shade 45 radio show “The Morning After.” “I don’t think record labels rely on that. That’s why they are doing 360 deals. They’re getting money off your touring, how many ringtones you sell, T-shirts, your merchandising. I don’t know if [selling a million copies in your first week] is gonna happen anytime soon. That’s a phenomenon.” The only real answer? Wait and see. Who do you think will be the next artist to sell 1 million copies of their album in the first week of release? Share your predictions in the comments.
