Eminem Says Recovery Will Not Have Skits

By Shaheem Reid Eminem Photo: Nigel Parry Eminem has said that when he opened up his planned album Relapse 2 to a variety of producers, he was inspired to not just change the direction of the LP, but rethink the project completely: He buried the Relapse sequel and started working on Recovery , which will be out on June 22. “I kinda went back to the lab on that whole concept,” Em told radio personality Angela Yee on her Shade 45 show “The Morning After,” on Thursday (April 29). “As I started getting to work with different producers and sh–, the very sound changed and I kinda turned the corner.” Em rattled off an impressive array of trackmasters that he secured for Recovery, including Dr. Dre, DJ Khalil, Boi-1da — who produced the album’s first single, “Not Afraid,” which debuted Thursday — and Havoc from Mobb Deep. “He sent me a couple of tracks,” Em, a huge Mobb Deep fan, said of Havoc. “They were both cool, but one of them was that sh– and I had to do something to it. I’m just happy I got to work with him.” Jim Jonsin (T.I., Lil Wayne) also worked on the LP. “He was open to ideas,” Jonsin told Mixtape Daily . “He was real respectful to my craft. He let me do what I do. He asked me ideas on some of the lyrics. We had ideas for lyric changes. Certain words may or may not work on radio. We talked about that. He had a setup outside of the room to do production, but I’d rather be in the room where he was at, and he was cool with that. And I knocked out a couple of joints in there while he was in there with me. He was pretty open and he let me do my thing. He did his thing. It was a pretty good experience. “We touched on something that I haven’t done anything like that before,” Jonsin added. “It’s unique in a way for myself. It’s a place I’ve been wanting to go, and I’m so happy he allowed it to go down. He played a huge part in the record. Without him on it, it’s not the same. I don’t wanna give up too much about what it is and what direction.” Slim Shady told Yee that Recovery is diverse and doesn’t have a uniform sound. “There’s a variety of different things, different moods and things like that on there,” he said of the LP. “There’s not just one overall sound. It’s a bunch of different sh–.” Another surprise Em dropped about the album: for the first time, he will not have any skits. By Shaheem Reid Eminem Photo: Chelsea Lauren/ Getty Images Eminem unveiled “Not Afraid,” the first single from his forthcoming Recovery album , on Thursday morning (April 29), and the track is a strong departure from the usual lead cuts Slim Shady delivers: There are no jabs at pop-culture icons, no jovial goofballing. Mr. Mathers is reflective and remorseful over the Boi-1da-produced track. “It’s been a ride, I guess I had to go to that place to get to this one. Some of you might still be in that place. If you trying to get out, follow me,” he says, talking at the beginning of the track. As the raps starts to kick in, Em threatens to “tear down” those who looked down on him. “You can try to read my lyrics off of this paper before I lay ’em/ But you won’t take the sting out these words before I say ’em. “I’m not afraid/ To take a stand,” he continues on the chorus. “Everybody come take my hand/ We’ll walk this road together through the storm/ Whatever weather come the war/ Just letting you know that you’re not alone/ Holla if you feel been down the same road.” On the second verse, Em admits to some artistic missteps and declares that his last album, Relapse, was a bit of letdown. “To the fans, I never let you down again, I’m back/ I promise to never go back on that promise,” the MC says in the song’s second verse. “In fact, let’s be honest/ That last Relapse CD was ehh / Perhaps I ran them accents into the ground/ Relax, I ain’t going to do that now.” Later in the verse, Em talks about his personal struggles. “But I think I’m still trying to figure this crap out/ Thought I had it mapped out, but I guess I didn’t/ It’s time to exorcise these demons / These muthaf—as are doing jumping jacks now.” As the song comes to a close, Em says he doesn’t want any more drama and wants to focus on raising his family. “I can’t just keep living this way,” he sings. “So starting today, I’m breaking out of this cage / I’m standing up, I’mma face my demons/ I’m manning up, I’mma hold my ground/ I’ve had enough, I’m so fed up/ Time to put my life back together right now.” Recovery is slated for a June 22 release. Eminem Is ‘Hands-On’ During Recovery Sessions, Just Blaze Says

By Jayson Rodriguez Enimem Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage Eminem is set to begin his Recovery on Thursday when he premieres “Not Afraid,” the first single from his follow-up to last year’s comeback project Relapse. Recovery is set for a June 22 release , the rapper recently announced via Twitter. The album is Eminem’s first substantial body of work with producers other than Dr. Dre, including Jim Jonsin, Drake collaborator Boi-1da and Just Blaze. Just Blaze spoke to Vibe about the project, which he’s still working on, and praised Em’s contribution to each song. “I have a few more songs that I have to finish mixing,” the producer said. “It’s a great experience working with him; he’s such a hands-on artist. … Most artists come in and rap, and the rest is up to you. It’s good to collaborate with someone on the other end of the spectrum.” Just Blaze has been coy about the work he’s down with the Detroit lyricist, but late last year, he admitted that the album, originally slated to be called Relapse 2, was more emotionally driven. Relapse, Eminem’s first release in years, was shaped more by the rapper’s shock rap and fighting his writer’s block brought on by depression and drug dependency. The rapper’s manager, Paul Rosenberg, spoke to Billboard on Wednesday (April 28) and said “Not Afraid” would be uplifting and not a takedown single like Eminem’s past lead efforts. “Not Afraid” is set to debut Thursday morning on Eminem’s Shade 45 satellite-radio station. Eminem Announces New Album Recovery For June 22

On Wednesday morning (April 14), Em tweeted that there was no Relapse 2 , and he promised last month that big news was coming soon. Well, the MC has already announced a new album and release date. “I had originally planned for Relapse 2 to come out last year,” Eminem said in a statement. “But as I kept recording and working with new producers, the idea of a sequel to Relapse started to make less and less sense to me, and I wanted to make a completely new album. The music on Recovery came out very different from Relapse, and I think it deserves its own title.” The new album — which features production from DJ Khalil, Just Blaze, Jim Jonsin and Boi-1da, among others — will drop June 22. Last week, Blaze told MTV News that he’d been working on new songs for Eminem, saying of the album: “It’s getting there, but we still got a lot of work.” Though he was sworn to secrecy, Blaze did reveal that “a lot of good music is being made. … He’s really back spitting. The wordplay is crazy, the metaphors are crazy. He’s really back on his game. He had his ups, he had his downs, he’s back way, way, way up. This is definitely going to be up there with the best of his albums, for sure, for sure. The fact that he’s branched out working with a lot of different people now, collaborating in a lot of different ways that he never has before, I think he’s going to surprise a lot of people.” Last year, Em told fans Relapse 2 was “extremely close to being finished. It just depends on how many songs I wanna put on it.” The project was pushed back until this year, and he took to Twitter on Wednesday to tell the world he had changed his mind. “There is no Relapse 2, ” he wrote. Photo: MTV News Eminem is a busy guy — he isn’t exactly the most accessible artist to work with, which is part of the reason why his guest spots on songs like Lil Wayne’s “Drop the World” and Drake’s “Forever” are such big deals. He doesn’t just do it for anybody, because not just anybody can keep up with him. So when the track list for B.o.B ‘s debut album The Adventures of Bobby Ray was released, it was a surprise to see Em’s name included. B.o.B scored a guest spot from an enthusiastic Eminem on “Airplanes (Part II),” also featuring Hayley Williams of Paramore . Marshall Mathers said Paul Rosenberg introduced him to B.o.B’s work, starting with his first mixtape Cloud 9, and he liked what he heard. “Paul Rosenberg played him the Cloud 9 mixtape and it kind of gave him an idea of what my music,” B.o.B explained. “Eventually he started playing Em more of my stuff and was keeping him updated on my progress and eventually he wanted to get in the studio with me, so that was a gift.” According to B.o.B, working in the studio with Em was like being in a laboratory with a mad scientist, watching and observing how everything works. But he was happy to find that while each artist has different methods, they’re all trying to find that zone. “It’s really reassuring to know that every artist has a way of working but it’s all … the essence of it all to get in that vibe and to get in that zone, and everybody has a different way to get in that zone,” B.o.B offered. “It’s good to see a different way, because you know, ‘OK, I can do this or I can do that.’ It kind of showed me where I was thinking inside of a box and where I can open up even more.” What do you think of the collaboration between Eminem and B.o.B? Conan O’Brien Launching Late-Night Show On TBS

In surprise move, show will launch in November at 11 p.m., followed by George Lopez’s ‘Lopez Tonight.’ By Eric Ditzian Conan O’Brien Photo: Michael Kovac/ Getty Images In a shocking turn, Conan O’Brien has inked a deal with TBS to launch a new late-night show in November. “In three months I’ve gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I’m headed to basic cable,” O’Brien said in a press release. “My plan is working perfectly.” The news comes just as negotiations between O’Brien’s reps and Fox were said to be progressing, albeit facing obstacles over concerns from the channel’s affiliates. The announcement was made on the same day that O’Brien launches his Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour in Eugene, Oregon. O’Brien’s publicist confirmed the development to MTV News. The press release states that TBS began negotiations with O’Brien last week, after George Lopez, who has his own late-night show on the channel, personally called the displaced “Tonight Show” host and asked him to join the lineup. “I can’t think of anything better than doing my show with Conan as my lead-in,” Lopez said in the press release. “It’s the beginning of a new era in late-night comedy.” O’Brien’s still-untitled, one-hour show will air Mondays through Thursdays at 11 p.m. ET/PT starting in November. “Lopez Tonight,” which currently airs at 11 p.m., will shift to midnight. “Conan has been the comedic voice for a generation. TBS already has a huge audience of young comedy lovers, and Conan’s show will give these fans even more reasons to watch our network,” Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks, said in the release. On his Twitter account, Conan added, “The good news: I will be doing a show on TBS starting in November! By Shaheem Reid Nicki Minaj Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images Nicki Minaj ‘s “Massive Attack” producer Alex Da Kid — who has also worked with Rihanna, Rob Thomas, Jazmine Sullivan and B.o.B — said you can expect more collaborations between him and the Young Money MC. “She wants to be an artist like a Rihanna or a Lady Gaga that translates all over the world,” Kid told MTV News about Minaj’s aspirations. “She’s dope. She’s super creative,” he continued. “She knows what she likes to hear. I’ll put a idea down [and] she’ll be like, ‘I like that idea. I don’t like that idea.’ We’ll just go back and forth. You get in the studio with some artists and they don’t know what they want until they hear it. She understands production. She’s dope. She’s easy to work with. She’s very cool. She’s got this cute thing, but at the same time she’s kinda grimy and ghetto. I really like it. She’s out here. She’s real creative and she’s one of the top people I wanted to work with. I think she’s dope.” Alex said songwriter Sean Garrett presented her with the beat to “Massive Attack” around four months ago and she immediately fell in love with it. Some other artists wanted the beat but both Alex and Sean agreed Nicki would do it justice. ” ‘Massive Attack’ … I’m kinda mobile. I make a living on my laptop,” he explained. “Any time a idea hits me, I put it down. I started that track on the train going to the studio. I don’t generally do that. I always kinda wait, but I had a melody idea. So I started on the train and finished in the studio. I knew it was special from the start. It wasn’t like I was aiming for Nicki with this track; I had a idea I thought was crazy. Nicki heard it and the rest was history. “With all my stuff, I base everything in hip-hop,” he added. “I been listening to hip-hop since I was 2 or 3. I try and broaden everything. I love all types of music and I do everything. I do rock, I do pop. Everything I do is based in hip-hop — that’s the foundation.” Alex produced B.o.B’s “Airplanes” single (featuring Paramore’s Hayley Williams and Eminem ) and has some beats for Rihanna, Estelle and Young Jeezy on deck as well. “I was in with Jeezy in Miami. Justin Bieber Might Pull an Eminem, Definitely Looks Adorable

On the surface, Justin Bieber and Eminem have about as much in common as Heidi Montag and Mother Theresa. Bieber doesn’t have any children, hasn’t penned any threatening lyrics about his ex-wife and has never entered rehab for a painkiller addiction. But the 16-year old is considered by many to be the world’s biggest pop star , while Eminem has often enjoyed the same recognition within the rapping community. Need more similarities? Both stars have also released albums that have dominated the music charts, and, ummm, they’re Caucasian. They might also both anchor biopics, as Bieber tells the latest issue of Teen Vogue : “We’re trying to set up a movie for me in the near future – it’s going to be similar to the story of how I got discovered. Kinda like my own version of 8 Mile .” Bieber didn’t say that he’s star in the film, but this weekend’s Saturday Night Live gave us a glimpse at his burgeoning acting skills. They aren’t shabby. Hayley Williams Calls Cameo With Eminem On B.o.B’s Album ‘Incredible’

In addition to cameos by the likes of T.I. and Lupe Fiasco, Adventures also features Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo on a track (which isn’t that much of a stretch, considering Rivers is practically a member of Young Money at this point) and, oddly enough, Paramore’s Hayley Williams, who lends her vocals to a pair of songs on the album, one of which also features Eminem. Needless to say, the idea of Hayley and Em sharing vocal duties raised our eyebrows just a bit, which is why we sent an e-mail to the Paramore frontwoman to ask her all about the song and just how she ended up appearing on B.o.B’s record in the first place. “I was given the track a while ago while we were on tour. The guys and I all loved it. They told me I was crazy if I passed it up,” Williams told MTV News. “I liked the part too much anyways, so of course I was down. “I only found out about Eminem getting on the track like a month ago. As if the song couldn’t get any better. He just slays me, he’s such a genius. And I’m a big B.o.B fan. Got everything of his that I’ve been able to get my hands on,” she continued. “Whether our fans know or not, I’m not sure, but [Paramore bassist ] Jeremy [Davis] and I have always been really into hip-hop. It means a lot that I got to collaborate with a hip-hop artist who is from Atlanta. Not far from home. We Southern gals love us some Southern gentlemen.” Williams appears solo on a song called “Airplanes,” and then she’s joined by Eminem on an album-closing reprise, which, appropriately enough, is called “Airplanes (Part II).” But what do the tracks sound like? Well, Williams wouldn’t tell us much, which means Paramore fans are just gonna have to wait until B.o.B’s album drops April 27. “Both versions of the track are incredible, that’s all I’ll say,” she wrote. “I’m so proud to be a part of this!” Are you excited to hear Hayley’s collabos with B.o.B?
