Vegetable Patches at Work are a Nice Perk

Image from Grand Rapids Press Some big companies with land to spare are providing vegetable patches for their employees to work on during their breaks and during lunch. It’s a nice perk, though a raise might be nicer, and it certainly is good for morale. In California Google and Yahoo have had organic gardens for a while. But more traditional companies have started to join the trend. Employees get to take home the fresh produce and in some c… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Software Company: Only for People with Autism

Specilisterne means “Specialist”, is a software company hiring people with autism. Thorkill Sonne founded Specilisterne in Copenhagen. He believes that everyone doesn’t have to fit in socially-accepted little boxes. He aims to completely change the image and the perception of other people about the nature of that box. First thing he did was turning disability on its head and hiring his employees because of their ability. Although autism is a disorder, people with this still have their edge because their brain wiring is highly functioning in a different way. People working in this company have good memory, very strong attention to details and are persistent too. They work well within their area of motivation and they follow instructions. Employees need to turn a profit to remain employed. Sonne’s primary goal is to make profit to show the world that it is possible with the help of these employees. He’s being inspired by his son, who also has autism. Because of this, he wanted to help people who have this disorder and make use of the gifts that hey have. Mads is an employee at Specilisterne. He hadn’t been able to keep a job in 20 years before working on his current job. He likes the job he has now and the most important thing is he feels happy because he is treated well like a normal person without any disabilities. SEC Employees Were Mastubating to Kiddie Porn While Your Economy Tanked [Finance]

Over the past two years, more than a dozen Securities and Exchange employees and contractors have tried to view pornography on government computers at least 8,273 times. Here’s what they were looking at while the global financial system cratered. The Washington Times broke the story of the SEC’s porn problem , which became the subject of numerous inspector general investigations, last month. And Dealbreaker subsequently published one report of an inspector general investigation into an SEC regional supervisor who viewed transvestite porn at work as stress relief. Now we’ve obtained reports of 16 investigations into porn-surfing by SEC employees and contractors (one of them is a woman!), including one man who said his daily porn viewing at work was limited to “no longer than an hour and a half a day.” The man told investigators that his porn habit grew out of looking at photos of men in bathing suits, which is sometimes known as “gateway porn”: It’s unclear from the investigation report precisely what the man did (or does) for the SEC, but its clear from the context of an interview transcript that he attended graduate school and works in a professional capacity. Two video files found on his computer were referred to the FBI because investigators suspected that the men depicted having sex in them were underage: Anyway, here’s the full list of sites referenced in all the investigations. Enjoy!

Kids Directing Air Traffic At JFK

BUSINESS BUZZ : Today's FAA scandal involves an air traffic controller who not only Took His Kid To Work but then allowed his kid to actually direct planes. If you listen to the audio, you will discover the kid did a pretty good job! Why is everyone being so AGEIST? The Best Links: “Pending the outcome of our investigation, the employees involved in this incident are not controlling air traffic,” the FAA said in a statement. “This behavior is not acceptable and does not demonstrate the kind of professionalism expected from all FAA employees.” The agency declined to comment beyond the statement. Listen here. It’s fun to watch the reporters try to gin up outrage over the potential peril this situation put passengers in. I mean, it’s much easier to talk about that than about the woefully inadequate system of child care we have in this country, right? Read

Judge closes Blackwater trial to public

Prosecution of five Blackwater employees could be thrown out over immunized statements A US District Court judge has barred the public from attending — or the media from reporting on — hearings in the trial of five Blackwater employees charged over the killing of 14 Iraqi civilians in Baghdad's Nisoor Square in 2007. A breaking story at the Washington Post reports that hearings to determine whether evidence against the accused was properly collected will be kept under wraps. At issue are statements the State Department collected from Blackwater immediately after the incident.
