Like millions of us, Malcolm D. Lee has an affinity for old school Hip-Hop music and culture. Now that his latest film Night School is about to hit theaters, the Queens, New York filmmaker is focusing on a comedy based around the most beloved era in Hip-Hop. According to Deadline , Malcolm D. Lee is working with Universal on a new project called Real Talk which centers around an old school rapper who’s on a mission to reunite his group from yesteryear in an effort to reclaim the number one spot that they held back in the day. No word on who’s being targeted to star in said movie but Radha Blank has been confirmed to be penning the film with Lee of course directing and producing the project under his Blackmailed Productions company. While details are scarce at this point Malcolm D. Lee has had a successful history when it comes to Black comedy movies. He’s been the man behind the success of films like Undercover Brother, The Best Man and Universal’s surprise smash shit, Girls Trip . — Photo: WENN.com
Source: Marc-Anthony Lewis / Marc-Anthony Lewis Yonathan Elias has a master’s degree, but when T.I.’s sons sent him on a mission to fetch their food, he obliged because he’s a hustler. T.I.’s competition show The Grand Hustle seeks to find the hardest, most efficient worker out a group of 16 individuals vying for a 6-figure salary. Yonathan is one of those hopefuls. We caught up with the young entrepreneur, who has many hustles of his own including a popular podcast . HB: How did you land a spot on The Grand Hustle ? Yonathan: I had to complete an online application that literally took me three hours to complete. I almost gave up about two or three times. After I submit that, I got an email requesting a Skype interview because I made it to the second round. I then received a call saying that the producers loved me, but they want me for the second season, unless someone didn’t pass their background check. Must of been my lucky day because someone didn’t pass and they flew me to ATL for my final interview in front of the camera. I was locked in a hotel for five days and couldn’t go out because they didn’t want any of the cast to see each other. The last day was approaching and producers came into my room saying congratulations. Pack your stuff, we are moving you to the mansion! HB: What was it like finding out you would be sequestered? Yonathan: The thought of weeks and months of no phone, no social media, no reading, no seeing or even talking to friends and family, was nerve-wrecking. This was the longest I’ve ever gone without a phone, but I have to say, it was refreshing. I don’t think I would do it on my own, but it was cool to clear my mind of a lot of the BS we see and hear in this world. HB: How did you feel when you realized you had a fellow friend, Krystal Garner, in the house? Yonathan: When KG walked through that door, my initial thought was “Hell Yeah, someone I know!” Then I immediately thought, “Oh damn. We are about to be targeted!” I knew that people would think we would form an alliance, but what the viewers don’t understand is, that’s two verses 14. That doesn’t sound like a win to me. So as happy as I was to see a familiar face, I also knew we would have to work 10 times harder and also have our guards up. HB: You made some funny faces on the show, did you realize you were doing it? Yonathan: Watching the show and seeing these faces I’m making makes me understand why people always tell me that I can’t hide my emotions. I’m not going to lie, I even laughed at some of my reactions because I honestly never realized my face was so damn animated. Now this has me self-conscious about how I react to someone I don’t like but don’t want them to know. HB: What was the hardest challenge? Yonathan: I’m not one who backs down easily. I’m not used to dealing with individuals I don’t like. I’ve taken anger management because I grew up fighting. I was picked on as a child well into my teenage years, so I have a lot of anger built up and whenever someone ever tried it, it ended with them being bloody. I gave up that side of my life, but a certain bird in the house, named George, is poking the beast out of hibernation and he will soon find out that I’m not one to eff with! HB: How has your life changed since? Yonathan: Man! All I can do is smile. I’ve been getting hit up for interviews, being sent scripts, getting emails to collaborate on projects. It’s amazing why reality TV can do for you. Even though everyone always said I was made for reality Tv, I always said I would never do it because of how editing can manipulate you, but I have to commend BET for showing the real Yonathan. Everything you see is me 100%. No extras or fakes added. HB: What’s next? Yonathan: I told y’all I’m a multimedia mogul in the making. I wrote a script called “Bruk’s Brothers” which is basically a guy version of Sex in the City and Girlfriends . I’ve got a well-known EP and director with a cast that includes some of the greats that you currently see on TV. I’ll be shooting the pilot in LA and then pitching it to different networks. My email has some amazing scripts that have been sent to me, for some projects I am considering to act in. Then I’m also going to start a Boots and Hat line that I may even collab with my fellow Cast mate, Javi, on. Currently in the works of getting a pretty dope TV hosting gig as well! I just want to keep the momentum going and let the viewers know, I’m so much more than a reality star! Watch The Grand Hustle on BET every Thursday night. Source: J. Merritt / Getty It’s lit. Halle Berry and Lena Waithe are reportedly teaming up as executive producers to bring us a small screen continuation of Boomerang . Based on the 1992 film that starred Berry, Eddie Murphy , Robin Givens , Martin Lawrence , and a slew of other high-profile actors, the 10-episode television series will follow the lives of Jacqueline’s son and Marcus’ daughter, as they try to step out of their parents’ shadow. Berry is excited about the new venture. In the press release, she showed Waithe nothing but love, commenting “I’m thrilled to team up with Lena on this project as she is without a doubt a leading voice of her generation and a trail blazer in her own right. I’m truly excited to be a part of bringing this iconic and beloved film to the small screen.” Meanwhile, Waithe paid homage to the original. “This is less of a reboot and more of a continuation of the original story,” she clarified. “There’s no point in trying to remake a classic. It can’t be done. So we want to create something fresh that speaks to a new generation. We hope people will come to the show with an open mind and ready to embrace the new world we’ve created!” Lena also said via Instagram , “What you think about you bring about. And there are very few things I spent more time thinking about than BOOMERANG when I was a kid. To continue this story with @benthewriter / @rishirajani / @dimedavis and @halleberry by my side is truly a dream come true. Thank you @bet and @paramountpics for trusting us with such a beloved film. We won’t let y’all down. #Boomerang #theSeries.” Stay tuned for more details. We can’t wait to see how this turns out . Source: FOX / Getty Empire is back with more deaths. It’s two years after Eddie Barker stole Empire Records from the Lyons . Tonight’s season five premiere starts with Lucious at a funeral. He’s standing over a casket, looking extremely sad, and all of our nerves are bad because we don’t know who’s inside! Then we flashback six months prior to that moment. Cookie and Lucious are broke. They can’t even afford $50,000 to fix the AC in their house and their house staff is complaining about not getting paid. Cookie is trying to hustle up money even if it means getting Lucious a judging spot on a reality show but Lucious is being difficult because he has other plans that include getting Empire back from Eddie! Kamal has been living in London for the past couple of years, he has a new man and he’s starting a record label but he plans to come home soon. He also reminds them that it’s their two-year wedding anniversary but of course, they forgot. There’s a lot going on. Then we find out that Andre is in jail for killing Anika. Someone photographed him spiking Anika’s drink. He admitted to that, couldn’t get around it, but he said he didn’t think she’d tumble over a banister and fall to her death. That’s obviously a lie because what else would he get out of spiking her drink? Anyway, Thirsty was able to get his sentence reduced to two years on reckless endangerment. Now that we’re almost two years past that, it’s safe to say he’s coming home soon, but until then, Cookie and Lucious need him to get some crucial information in the bing. Dre gets acquainted with a man named Steven, who happens to have run Eddie’s Ponzi scheme once upon a time ago. Obviously, Dre finesses him and gets the important information they needed. Hold that thought. Now we get to Hakeem. Remember when Blake’s dad came out guns a blazing? Hakeem ended up getting shot. Blake jumped in front of him and managed to stop his father but it was too late so now part of Hakeem’s lung is missing and he’s in rehab because he can’t breathe very well. Obviously, this is keeping him from being able to perform and he’s bitter about it. He’s being a brat about his therapy and on top of that, he and Tiana are living together (or married) with two children to raise (Bella and then the baby Tiana had). Eddie sidelined Tiana once he found out she was pregnant but she wants to get back in the game and she wants Hakeem to perform with her at an upcoming award show to get back on Eddie’s good side so they can make some money. Tiana’s solution is that Hakeem can lip-synch. You know he gives her a hard time about it but he loves her so he’s probably going to agree. But this leads to another question, how is he going to lip-synch effectively when he still struggles to breathe? Andre ends up coming through with the information that Cookie and Lucious need to get Empire back. Now we’re at that award show and Cookie and Lucious are sitting near Eddie and his wife Giselle (they got remarried but still hate each other). The show opens with Tiana performing. She got her wish. Hakeem is with her lip-synching, but again, he can’t really breathe properly so he loses his breath and the entire world realizes he was pulling a Milli Vanilli. He runs off embarrassed, but Blake steps in to cover for him. Then, Cookie spills a drink on Giselle. She pretends it was an accident but obviously it was a ploy to force her to leave them alone with Eddie. They cut to the chase, they know Eddie has been funneling money from Empire to offshore accounts and if he knows what’s good for him, he’ll get up on that stage when Lucious and Cookie win their award and announce that he’s stepping down from Empire. Next, we see Eddie, drunk, frantic and going through some files because he did what he was told. Giselle comes in demanding to know wtf is going on. Eddie explains that they lost because the Lyons discovered their discretion, but Giselle wasn’t in on that. The only thing Giselle was trying to do was steal Empire from Eddie. She gets pissed the two of them go back and forth and end up tussling, Giselle knocks him down and he hits his head on a table corner. You see where this is going right? Lucious gets the news that Eddie is dead and he is pissed because now the deal is off. He’s feeling hopeless and tries to blame cookie for giving up Empire and not trusting that he had a plan. Cookie wasn’t with him going to jail so she throws that back in his face. They start bickering back and forth but then Jamal interrupts their verbal sparring match. They’re happy to see him and even his new boo but Jamal gives them perspective. They should be happy that the Empire of Evil is done. They’re talented hustlers and they can figure something else out. Cookie and Lucious mull it over and decide to start their own thing, but they need an artist first. Cookie remembers a woman she saw sitting in her car singing and rapping at the prison where Dre is. It turns out, she’s a social worker and her name is Treasure. Cookie introduces herself and says she’s going to change her life. Treasure stops by their house with a shady manager, but Lucious handles the manager in his own special hooligan-style way, and in short, Treasure gets down to business. She turns out to be quite impressive and they want to sign her. This is the beginning of the new family label that Cookie and Lucious plan to sign, even Jamal is on board. But then, the episode ends where we started, with Lucious hovering over a coffin. He says, “Sorry” and we’re all wondering who tf is in there! Don’t get your hopes up, we’ll have to wait all season to find to find out who it is. Source: WENN.com / WENN Looks like production on a sequel for Redman and Method Man’s 2001 cult classic stoner flick How High is finally underway and it’s going to star, Lil Yachty?! Wait—he doesn’t even smoke weed! Regardless to his lack of partaking in the love of Mary Jane the “One Night” rapper took to Twitter to announce to all his fans, “haters,” and “smokers” that he’d be making his film debut in the long-anticipated sequel and that production on the film had already begun in Atlanta. I'm so hype to announce i'm starring in my first film #HowHigh2 . Lets Get It @MTV @Universalent . Stay tuned for more details on @howhighmovie . COMING 2019 pic.twitter.com/cQtxOOimeZ — Underdog (@lilyachty) September 25, 2018 We’re not trying to hate but sequels that don’t star any of the franchise’s originators don’t tend to fair well, especially when it’s a stoner flick starring a straight edged teenager. We mean if you don’t smoke weed and are keeping it healthy then more power to you, but at the same time hiring a “Say No To Drugs” enthusiast to star in a movie about indulging in the ganja doesn’t make much sense. We’ll just have to wait and see how this MTV film turns out. Let us know what you think about Lil Yachty being tapped to star in the stoner flick below and what kind of expectations you have for the sequel. — Photo: WENN.com
Source: Jason Merritt / Getty Bill Cosby has now been moved to a maximum security prison. Do you think that he should have to do his time there? via TMZ Bill Cosby is now at the prison he will call home for 3 to 10 years. Cosby’s official inmate number is NN7687. He was moved Tuesday after his sentencing to the Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution Phoenix in Schwenksville, PA. It’s significant … prison is a maximum security facility, meaning it houses some of the most violent offenders in the state. The prison is fairly new and has 3,830 beds. The judge deemed Cosby a “sexually violent predator” … which apparently was the trigger for the choice of prison. Cosby will be housed in a single cell next to the infirmary … possibly because of his medical problems. He’s allowed phone calls and visitation consistent with prison policies. A prison official says, “We are taking all of the necessary precautions to ensure Mr. Cosby’s safety and general welfare in our institution.” The official says the long-term goal is for Cosby to go into the general population.
