Goldman Sachs investing in factory farms: exporting environmental catastrophe to China

Listening to members of the Senate subcommittee on investigations interrogate Goldman Sachs executives, I couldn't help but think, “chicken.” And then, “where's the beef?” Not because the executives parried, ducked, and even drew out their syllables (much to Sen. Susan Collins's frustration) during their ten-hour grilling. But because the white shoe investment bank and securities firm has, in recent years, entered the messy world of global agribusiness. That's right: Goldman Sachs is in the business of factory farming. Perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised: in the late 18th century, the area around Wall Street housed slaughterhouses and tanneries. The word capitalism itself is rooted in the trade of (live)stock measured by head (Latin: capita) of cattle. Nonetheless, the parallels between the killings made on Wall Street then and now are not only eerie, but consequential. Just as the securitized debt deals Goldman was hawking may be, in Warren Buffett's words, “financial weapons of mass destruction,” putting the whole economic system at risk of collapse, factory farming carries a parallel risk — of environmental destruction and exploitation of resources, prospects for food security, and animals, all on a mass scale. Unfortunately, the Senate inquiry into Goldman's alleged malfeasance is unlikely to question why the company in 2008 decided to acquire ten intensive poultry farms in China's Hunan and Fujian provinces for $300 million. While Goldman isn't running the farms itself (that's outsourced) it retains control over the prices. “So for the record, that's: U.S. mortgages = bad . . . Asian livestock = good,” is how the website Business Insider described the deal. This isn't the firm's first foray into this arena. Goldman is also principal owner of Burger King, joining Bain and Texas Pacific in 2002 in a $2.26 billion takeover of the fast food giant. Labor activists have criticized Goldman for the poverty wages earned by full-time Burger King workers, even as the firm continues to pay out billions in bonuses, including during the great recession. China Syndrome In China, Goldman may well be producing chicken for its own restaurants, since Burger King has 25 Chinese outlets. In recent decades, both fast food and U.S.-style factory farms that house thousands of animals in tiny cages or stalls in indoor sheds have become increasingly common in China. But such facilities, like the ones Goldman now owns, forfeit any semblance of animal welfare and have immense environmental and social costs. Why would Goldman want to own factory farms? Obviously, it sees an opportunity to make money, no matter the consequences. Meat consumption in China is rising rapidly; since 1980, it's quadrupled. Tyson, Smithfield, and other leading “protein producers” are active in the country, seeking new sources of profit by putting the proverbial chicken in 1.3 billion Chinese pots. Goldman must have wanted a piece of that pot, too. Goldman's poultry purchase could be labeled with the epithet Sen. Carl Levin used repeatedly at the hearings riffing on a Goldman employee's email description of one of the firm's securities schemes (a “shitty deal”). Filthy Lucre According to Wu Weixiang, an associate professor at China's Zhejiang University's Agriculture College, “Domestic animal and poultry waste has become a major source of environmental pollution.” Indeed, China's billions of farmed animals produce an estimated 2.7 billion tons of manure a year–three-and-a-half times industrial solid waste levels–and runoff from livestock facilities has led to a significant “dead zone” in the South China Sea, akin to that in the Gulf of Mexico, which is also the result of agriculture. The poultry deal also contradicts a Goldman business principle. “Our responsibility for environmental stewardship does not fluctuate with changing economic conditions,” the firm's 2008 Environmental Report states. “We hope our work continues to inspire action and creative market-based solutions that can help our environment endure and thrive. Only three percent of China's large and medium-sized livestock operations have facilities to treat animal wastes, according to Xu Cheng, a professor at China Agricultural University. Do Goldman's? Just a year and a half ago, Goldman was kept afloat by billions of dollars in U.S. government funds. Does that mean U.S. taxpayer dollars subsidized cruel, polluting, climate-heating factory farms in China? Even if the connection isn't direct, what are we to make of an elite private equity firm like Goldman helping expand industrial-scale animal facilities? cont. added by: JanforGore

Bring Down Monsanto…

Take action now and let's bring down Monsanto: 70% percent or more of our food contains genetically engineered food brought by the bio-tech giant: Monsanto. GMO is endangering people's health and our environment at an alarming rate. Cross-contamination is irreversible and good, organic crops are being jeopardized. These seeds are incredibly expensive compared to the traditional ones and have been genetically modified to produce their own pesticide, to survive the spraying of the: “Roundup”, a potent herbicide and to self terminate. This has lead our farmers to buy new GMO seeds each year and depend on Monsanto. As a result of this ruthless drive to use India as a testing ground for genetically modified crops, 125,000 farmers took their own lives. These people were driven to debt, to economic distress, homeless and landless. GMO has and is failing catastrophically. This company is persecuting, bullying and bringing farms to bankruptcy. GMO was never adequately tested for safety, actually more and more research shows its dangers to the human/animal health, polluting our crops and our water. Monsanto did use false advertising; Monsanto poisons the third world and privatizes water. Its employees have passed through the so-called revolving door many times, they rotated between this industry and the public agencies: Clarence Thomas, Gwendolyn S. King, Linda Fisher, Jim Travis, Linda Avery Strachanand, Toby Moffet , Marcia Hale, Donald Bandle, George H. Poste, Michael Kantor and Michael Taylor all bending rules, finding loopholes to assure this company profits. This technology is only exacerbating hunger, poverty, irreversible contamination and climate change in our world. Bring down Monsanto's monopoly on our food and a centralized agriculture. Bring down Monsanto's genetically engineered seeds. Bring down the use of harmful pesticides, herbicides and chemicals alike. Hold this company accountable for its damages to the world. Organic agriculture, permaculture and biodiversity are the only answer to sustainability, to the preservation of our environment and our health. We want you, as our government, as a body of representation of the people of the United States to invest billions subsidizing organic, environmental agriculture. Bring down Monsanto's poisoning, companies alike and the agrochemical industry once and for all as it is one of the greatest threats to the whole human race. Thank you. Green exercise healthier than techno-sweat

Where you exercise turns out to have measurable effects on physical and mental health. Exercising in a healthy, green environment significantly lowers blood pressure, increases self-esteem and has a positive significant effect on 4 of 6 mood measures, according to new research published in the International Journal of Environmental Health Research . Subjects who watched pleasant rural images while running on a treadmill experienced greater health boosts than runners who saw negative urban images. Treadmill runners were shown one of four different types of scenes—”rural pleasant,” “rural unpleasant,” “urban pleasant” or “urban unpleasant”—before being screened for blood pressure and mood factors. Researchers noted the environment’s clear effect on subjects’ health: Exercise alone significantly reduced blood pressure, increased self-esteem, and had a positive significant effect on 4 of 6 mood measures. Both rural and urban pleasant scenes produced a significantly greater positive effect on self-esteem than the exercise-only control. This shows the synergistic effect of green exercise in both rural and urban environments. By contrast, both rural and urban unpleasant scenes reduced the positive effects of exercise on self-esteem. The rural unpleasant scenes had the most dramatic effect, depressing the beneficial effects of exercise on three different measures of mood. It appears that threats to the countryside depicted in rural unpleasant scenes have a greater negative effect on mood than already urban unpleasant scenes. Looking ahead, the researchers pointed out the implications of green exercise on society as a whole, noting the importance of such projects as healthy walking projects; exercise by prescription; healthy school environments; healthy travel to school projects; green views in hospitals, city farms and community gardens; urban green space; and outdoor leisure activities in the countryside. Our prescription for a great weekend? A long walk, taken with a heaping spoonful of “rural pleasant.” To your health! (Photo credit: a2td, SXC )

Gudda Gudda Recalls Getting ‘Willy Wonka’ From Lil Wayne

‘Right before [Weezy] went to jail, he was like, ‘Man, you can have that,’ ‘ Young Money member tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Gudda Gudda and Lil Wayne Photo: Young Money/Cash Money Breaking Through: Gudda Gudda Young Money’s Gudda Gudda has a new video on the way for “Willy Wonka,” but he has no idea what the clip will look like. “We shot a green-screen video,” Gudda told Mixtape Daily about the production, which was shot before co-star Lil Wayne went to prison . “It was almost like how [Young Money’s] ‘Roger That’ was. I don’t know what they’re doing to it. I’m kinda lost. “It wasn’t my video at first,” Gudda continued. “All I know is that we shot green screen. I don’t know if I’mma need to shoot more scenes on it. I didn’t see the final cut. If I don’t like the way it is, I’m gonna pay for somebody to shoot more scenes for me and make it right.” “Willy Wonka” was originally slated to be on Weezy’s upcoming Tha Carter IV, but the YM founder passed it on to his good friend. “[DJ] Ill Will sent me the beat,” Gudda recalled. “He didn’t do nothing on the night I played it for him. I laid my verse on it that night. He came back the next day, the engineer pulled it up like, ‘Look what Gudda did to the beat.’ By the time I came back to the studio, [Wayne] had already laid his verse on it. The song was done. “I didn’t know what he was using it for. Ill Will sent it to me for my mixtape. I already figured Wayne might want it. I was like, ‘If he wants it for his album, we gotta give it to him.’ So basically, he wanted it at first. We shot the video for it. And right before [Weezy] went to jail, he was like, ‘Man, you can have that sh–. Go ‘head, man, get you. Put that sh– out and go stupid with it. Take the song, take everything.’ He gave me all that sh– right before he went to jail.” Gudda said he communicates with Wayne frequently. “I talk to him a few times a week,” Gudda said. “He’s doing real good, on some real sh–. He’s in there being positive, reading all his fan mail. He’s trying to stay busy. He’s got a job in there. He’s good.” Weezy also appears on Gudda’s Back to Guddaville mixtape, dropping soon. The New Orleans MC opened up about the warm reception for his last street album. “When I put that Guddaville out [a few months ago], I ain’t never get a response like that since I been doing music,” he said. “It felt good, I was real humble. It makes wanna go in the studio ASAP. I started working on Back to Guddaville. I didn’t wanna leave that space. “This one is all originals,” he added. “I have nothing on nobody else’s track. All of it is originals. Of course, y’all gonna hear the ‘Willy Wonka’ joint with me and Wayne [and] ‘Small Thing to a Giant’ with me and Wayne. I got a joint called ‘Polo’; it’s crazy. I got a joint called ‘Lock My CEO Up’ featuring Waka Flocka [Flame]. That’s gonna be one of the hardest songs this year. I promise. I put things about Wayne in my verse. Waka put things about Gucci [Mane] in his verse.” As a bonus for the song, Gudda said he’ll feature the recording of an actual phone conversation between himself and Wayne from Rikers Island , where he’s been since April, as well as a phone call that captures Gucci calling Waka from prison. Jay Rock, Juelz Santana and various members of the Young Money squad will also cameo on the new mixtape. Gudda said he’s excited about his sequel and grateful about the momentum that the original Guddaville tape has sparked for him. He performs material from the tape at shows, several times a week. “It feels good,” Gudda said of his growing fanbase. “I been patient for a long time. People know I been with Wayne for a minute. Me and him been through a lot. It feels good to know that I been patient and I’m getting my just due. I ain’t all the way there yet, but I’m making some money. I’m making a lot more money than other n—as. [Fans] hit me and tell me they … sorry. They say, ‘I’m sorry my n—a. I ain’t know you was that nice. I take it back.’ ” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .

Christina Aguilera Was ‘In Control’ Of ‘Not Myself Tonight’ Video

‘I’m a very sexual person. It’s important to me that that always comes across,’ she says. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Christina Aguilera Photo: MTV News Christina Aguilera has veered toward the provocative when it comes to her image. Whether dolled up like a prostitute in 2001’s group track “Lady Marmalade” or clad in chaps in the boxing ring for her “Dirrty” video, Aguilera certainly isn’t afraid of sexy. So when fans got a glimpse of the very, very sexy Christina in “Not Myself Tonight,” they weren’t surprised to see the singer dressed up in S&M gear, getting it on with ladies and gentlemen alike. But Aguilera didn’t make the racy clip for attention, she insisted. The video was meant to reflect the song, which is about losing yourself and doing things you normally wouldn’t. “It wasn’t a prove-a-point type of song for me. It was an ultimate need-to-release song for me,” she told MTV News, adding that being a mom to son Max doesn’t mean she can’t be sexy. “What I do artistically in expressing myself has nothing to do with being a mother,” she said. “Those are two very different hats for me, and my little son, he will grow up in a household that is very artistic. That will be very much a part of his life, and appreciating a woman’s beauty and the fact that a woman is allowed to express herself in a sensual way, a sexual way, and not have to be ashamed of it.” The singer was quick to make it clear that no matter how sensual the visuals appear, she’s always in the driver’s seat. “I make sure every time I express myself in that way, it’s in a very controlled environment, that I am in control of the environment,” she said. “And I’m very comfortable. It’s such an important message to me, because I feel there are so many rules and regulations, especially for women,” Aguilera continued. “Men are sort of allowed to be whatever they’re wanting to be. You’re allowed to be these free beings, and I feel that women should have the same rights. I’m a very sexual person. It’s very important to me that that always comes across [and to] always stay inspired by the non-mainstream things.” Do you think Christina’s latest video is too sexy? Let us know in the comments! The 7 Funniest Jokes From Barack Obama at The White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Add Barack Obama to the list of people funnier than Jay Leno. While the president brought his B-minus game to the open mic night that is the White House Correspondents’ Dinner — never mind the massive oil spill in the Gulf that threatens the environment or the car bomb in Times Square that threatens national security, what’s the deal with airplane food? — Leno could barely muster a chuckle from the assembled political luminaries, wonky nerds and Hollywood stars. It got so bad, he was even forced to pull out the “this is a tough room” card, the mating call of every bombing hack comic. And oh, the multimedia jokes: All that was missing was ” Monkey Picks the YouTube Clip .” Thank goodness then for President Obama, who made the night more than tolerable. After the jump, the president’s seven best moments. Try the veal!

IPCC Chairman: Despite Attacks from Critics, Climate Science Will Prevail

Science thrives on debate. Only by challenging scientific findings do we expose weak arguments and substantiate strong ones. But the process relies on the debate being devoid of political taint and grounded in sound scientific knowledge. Sadly, that has not been the case in the recent barrage of criticism leveled against climate science. The readers of Yale Environment 360 are by now familiar with recent questioning by some of the validity of the widely accepted science of climate change. The release of emails stolen from the University of East Anglia was used just prior to the Copenhagen Climate Summit to project an unflattering portrayal of climate scientists in general and to voice allegations that climate science was deeply flawed. (It is significant that the U.K. House of Commons Science and Technology Committee last month issued a report essentially exonerating the researchers involved of any ill intent or wrongdoing, as did an independent panel established by the university.) This episode was followed by accusations that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which I chair, had exaggerated the severity of climate change. Though some of the criticism has been thoughtful and was welcomed by the IPCC, much of it relied on unsubstantiated conspiracy theories and gross mischaracterizations that would be laughable were they not intended to create a bias in public perceptions on this critical issue. Certainly, in any human endeavor there is always room for improvement, and that is particularly true of enhancing the level of thoroughness in searching for new knowledge. In this context, the IPCC has listened and learned from the more reasoned criticism voiced recently. As I will explain later in this article, the panel is also taking action to refine its procedures in response to fair and objective criticism. But to call climate science a “hoax,” as some fringe critics have done, amounts to a tremendous disservice to science and to humanity as a whole. much more at link… added by: WakeUpPeople
