Jan Hooks, a Saturday Night Live cast member from 1986-1991, passed away today after a long battle with a serious illness. She was 57 years old. Sources confirm that Hooks, who most recently guest-starred on 30 Rock as Jenna Maroney’s mother, passed away in New York City. The precise cause of death is unknown at this time. Hooks appeared on the iconic sketch comedy program opposite Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Phil Hartman, Dana Carvey and Dennis Miller, among others. She is best remembered for impressions of Sinead O’Connor and Hillary Clinton, while Hooks was also one half of the Sweeney Sisters. Following her run on Saturday Night Live, Hooks joined the cast of Designing Women and later had a prominent role on Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. Say this about the year 1994: it featured some winning music! I note this, of course, because The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Episode 2 answered the question this week of where Bonnie and Damon are located, only it turned the inquiry on its head a bit and instead revealed WHEN they are: The aforementioned year. 1994. Damon and Bonnie are repeating May 10, 1994 in an empty Mystic Falls for some reason, with Damon spending the day drinking and making pancakes and Bonnie trying to re-find her magic in order to get them back home to present day. Except, as we learned in the closing scene when Bonnie’s missing crossword puzzle got filled in by neither Bonnie nor Damon… they aren’t actually alone after all. Someone else is somehow there. Elsewhere on a strong installment of The Vampire Diaries Season 6 : Elena finally admitted to herself that she fell in love with Damon while she was with Stefan, enabling Alaric to successful access that memory, erase it and set off a domino chain of events within Elena’s head that made her forget she ever loved Damon. Jeremy and Matt learned that Sarah, the girl who Elena fed off last week, stole a car from her old boss and is in town… for some reason. But Jeremy is still taken and went to crash with her at the Salvatore mansion. Tripp told Matt that he was a descendent of the Founding Fell Family (meaning he’d be related to Meredith somehow) But Matt appeared to have some doubts. We later saw Tripp drive some vampires INTO Mystic Falls and unleash sunlight on them, killing them all. Caroline and Enzo found Stefan in Savannah. He broke Caroline’s heart by basically saying he had to move on by completely ignoring her and his past in Mystic Falls. And then Enzo broke Ivy’s neck to get back at Stefan for having given up on his Damon search. Overall, it was a solid episode that focused more on character development than heavy plot movement. But producers have said that’s the goal early in Season 6 because they acknowledge the mythology has grown too complicated and dense. What did everyone else think of this installment? Oh, Arrow. How many times can you mess with our heart? On Arrow Season 3 Episode 1 , Oliver was actually happy. For a little while at least. This is partly because his team totally has this crime-fighting down to a science, as evidenced by the high-paced opening action scene: Felicity is aptly monitoring communications… Diggle is in charge of securing a shipment of black market weapons… and Oliver and Roy Arsenel are all over the bad guys. Who said being a superhero had to be tough? Watch Arrow Season 3 Episode 1 Online But when we see a new drug dealer take over a crime group and become Starling City’s new Count Vertigo. His first act is to kill Oliver Queen. We also later meet Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer, who bond with Felicity at her electronic retail store over his desire to purchase a satellite frequency communicator. It’s then time for the moment all shippers have been waiting for: Ollie and Felicity on a date! For real! Oliver opens up about his time in Hong Kong and his trust issues and how she helped change him and it’s all going well… until Count Vertigo fires a rocket into the restaurant. He had tracked Oliver to the restaurant via a GPS on his suit and Oliver is upset that he allowed his feelings for Felicity to distract him from noticing it. After getting injected by a serum by his new enemy, Oliver is saved by Detective Lance, though his heart gives out and the Count escapes when Oliver goes to check on him (Lance would be hospitalized and end up fine). Still, Oliver is torn: Can he ever be a regular person AND Arrow? Later on, with the help of Sara, Oliver will defeat the new Count, but not before he ominously tells Arrow that a new enemy will just crop up to take his place. Back at Queen Consolidated, Palmer shows up and gives a very strong presentation to the board, which contains data he stole using Felicity’s advice. He has a plan to resurrect the company and the city, which he wants to rename Star City. Palmer later offers Felicity a job, which she turns down. Meanwhile, Diggle and Lyla have their baby, which prompts a talk between Oliver and Felicity. She wants him to just tell her that they can “never” be together due to his alter-ego, but he interrupts her speech with a kiss. It’s an amazing moment, yet it doesn’t mean they’re together. Quite the opposite in Felicity’s view, in fact. And now we get to it: After meeting up with Laurel on the roof of a building, Sara gets shot by three arrows to her chest and plummets to her death. It’s a sad moment, but also a necessary one, as it will jumpstart Laurel’s character and have a lasting impact on everyone we know and love. Quite an opener, huh? As such, the angle was clear: Expose him. After Hunahpu captured its third consecutive immunity challenge, Rocker’s infamous identity and history were revealed and all hell broke loose. Natalie informed the Coyopa tribe members that they were, in no uncertain terms, following a racist … oh, and the guy sucks at all these challenges to boot. At one point, she even addressed Rocker directly, asking “Why don’t you say something homophobic or racist like in your past?” So very clever. So effective, though. Rocker’s response was what you might have expected, given the bear she was poking: “if you were a man I would knock your teeth out.” Wow. He also suggested they throw down, later. He won’t get the chance. Already second guessing John in many cases, Josh turned on him hardcore. Between premature alliances and getting stuck with people who, well, don’t really care for other races or gays, there’s not a lot that John has going for him. At the next Tribal Council, John Rocker was voted out … with a hidden immunity idol in his pocket. Now that’s the kind of drama you only hope to see! We didn’t do it justice here of course. Viewers were introduced to Kate Callahan on Criminal Minds Season 10 Episode 1 , a premiere that spent a lot of time on the addition of Jennifer Love Hewitt to the show’s cast. But Criminal Minds Season 10 Episode 2 honed in on a veteran member of the BAU squad, Garcia was clearly having a tough time dealing with the fact that she shot Greg Bailer… even though he was trying to kill her and Spencer in the hospital and all. She’s been having recurring nightmares about the incident. She responds that she’s tried writing him in prison, but it hasn’t helped. She needs the in-person sit-down. Morgan doesn’t approve in any way, however, saying Bailer is a killer and doesn’t deserve any of her energy. But, come on. Did you really think this would stop Garcia? She ends up taking some personal time to try to wrap head around what happened, causing concern for Reid. He asks Morgan about it and he responds by telling him about the guilt Garcia is dealing with over the shooting. He then gets personal himself and admits that he felt the same way after his first shooting. Until he realized that the victim was not a good person. Garcia, of course, does end up seeing Greg, who is on death row and who has 10 hours to live. None of his friends or family members have shown up and he doesn’t want to be alone for the lethal injection. Would Garcia attend the event? She agrees and Greg’s final words are “thank you,” giving Garcia the closure she needs and bringing to an end one seriously emotional episode. Give Criminal Minds props for going above the norms of a procedural here. We rarely see the after-effects of a shooting play out in such a manner and it helped this episode stand out from most of the dramatic fare on CBS. Well done.
