Gareth Evans on Remaking The Raid — and The Raid 2’s 4-On-1 Car Fight

This week at SXSW Movieline caught up with director Gareth Evans, whose Indonesian martial arts actioner The Raid: Redemption is set to knock your socks off later this month courtesy of Sony Classics. (Haven’t heard of the martial arts form silat? You will, come March 23.) With his film steadily collecting kudos left and right, Evans is already thinking ahead to his Raid sequel (working title: Berandal ), and an insane, dangerous-sounding four-on-one car fight he plans on working into the mix. First up, though, is the U.S. remake currently in the works at Screen Gems. The original film worked with the unique (and relatively new to most audiences) martial arts form silat , employed dynamically in a fairly basic setup: A SWAT team trapped inside a tenement building locked down by a vicious gangster must fight their way out. The American remake will build on the elements of The Raid , with Evans on hand as executive producer and Raid stars/fight choreographers Iko Uwais (who plays hero Rama) and Yayan Ruhian (who steals scenes as the sadistic Mad Dog) working on the remake’s fight choreography. “There will be elements of silat in there, which is kind of cool because there’s a respect for the original,” Evans said. “And I’m curious because the thing is yes, silat is an Indonesian martial art, but it’s practiced all over the world. There are schools of silat in London, there are schools of silat in America, there are schools of silat in France, and they have international championships as well. So there are a lot of people that know silat around the world, so it’s not a far-fetched idea that someone in America could know silat, the same way that it’s not far-fetched for a guy in America to know kung fu or muy thai.” While screenwriter Brad Inglesby has been recruited to script the remake, a director has yet to be found. Whoever it is, Evans isn’t worried about passing the reins to another filmmaker’s vision. “For me it’s like this: the storyline and the central concept is streamlined,” he explained. “It’s a very straightforward action film. So there’s room for improvement, and I think that director, whoever it is, has to be given the kind of creative freedom to push it in whatever direction he wants to push it and not have somebody standing over his shoulder saying, ‘You can’t do this, or you can’t do that.’ I think it should be that person’s decision.” After his Raid promotional tour is done, Evans will turn to pre-production on the sequel, with plans to begin filming next January. But how do you follow a film that’s already packed with non-stop, relentless, wall-to-wall, inventive action? “By going in a slightly different direction,” he teased. “If I try to replicate and copy it’ll fall on its ass, so I want to do something kind of different. We’re going to take the story out now and go onto the streets. So everything that was scary about that building and about that boss is small fry compared to the gangs we meet in the sequel — now we meet the people who let him have that building. And we expand the world out, we explore certain characters that were kind of hinted at in this but not expanded upon, and we ramp up some of the set pieces as well.” Evans’s Raid films will always retain their focus on silat, only showcased within different environments. Like, for example, the limited confines of a moving automobile. “We’ll have one fight scene,” Evans said, “a four-on-one fight inside of a car, and Iko’s going to be kicking people out through the windows, and it’s going to be nuts. What we’re doing now is we have to figure out how to shoot that without killing anyone. “Once we get that sorted,” he continued with a laugh, “then we’ll start shooting that.” Read more from SXSW here . Jenelle Evans: Arrested For Cyber-Stalking!

A back-and-forth fight over dueling claims of cyber-stalking landed troubled Teen Mom 2 star Jenelle Evans behind bars Monday … for the third time this year. Yes, three arrests in 2012. It’s March 6. Jenelle, 20, turned herself in to North Carolina authorities after a warrant was issued for her arrest on Friday. Evans was released after only about half an hour, and did not have to post bond, but she did have yet another smiling mug shot taken: Evans’ arrest was in connection with a cyber-stalking claim brought by her former boss James Duffy … just weeks after Evans accused Duffy of the same crime. Jenelle filed cyber-stalking charges in January against Duffy, who allegedly posted party photos of Evans online, along with her address and cell phone number. Then Evans’ ex-roommate, who was living with Duffy, had her arrested in connection with making harassing and threatening phone calls against them both. Only six days later, Evans was arrested again for violating a domestic violence restraining order … everybody got all that? Which brings us to yesterday: Jenelle’s latest arrest on Monday comes more than a month after the January arrests, and her lawyer claims the charges are entirely motivated by spite. “These are the first allegations by Duffy against her, and these charges are completely retaliatory in nature,” Evans’ attorney told Us Weekly afterward. Cyber-stalking is a type of harassment claim. In general, a victim must show a compelling pattern of harassment via the Internet, email, text messages, or other means of electronic communication. A cyberstalking conviction can result in a restraining order, probation, or even criminal penalties against the assailant, though proving it is often difficult. Evans remains on probation for her role in a separate 2011 assault in which she beat the ever-loving crap out Britany Truett in a fight over Kieffer Delp. She now faces a March 23 court date for the cyberstalking charge.

Jenelle Evans: NOT Pregnant Again, Thank Goodness

Don’t believe everything you read on Twitter. Teen Mom 2 star Jenelle Evans would like to clear up some rumors, namely that she is not pregnant a second time. The speculation swirled this past week, but she quickly put it to rest. “No I’m not pregnant,” she tweeted at one lucky fan. “I have the implanon implant in my arm that last for 5 years and have not been sexually active for months.” Whatever that means, we can all breathe a sigh of relief: Jenelle’s relationships with men are, well, a bit of a mess. First, she got pregnant with her now 2-year-old son Jace Evans with her ex Andrew Lewis in high school. Since that ended, she has been dating miscreant Kieffer Delp on-and-off. Currently, Kieffer is in jail and Jenelle says that there’s nothing romantic going on between them … but when Britany Truett tried to hit that, she got punished. When he gets out of the big house, he’ll most likely end up in his future baby mama’s house. Just a prediction. The new season of Teen Mom 2 will be telling! Teen Mom 2 returns tomorrow night on MTV. ‘Avengers’ Director Joss Whedon Is ‘So Clever,’ Chris Evans Says

‘He’s a great guy to be quarterbacking this thing,’ the ‘Captain America’ star tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Chris Evans Photo: MTV News Although most of our Marvel Comics-related movie excitement these days is pegged to the impending release of “Captain America: The First Avenger,” we can’t help but already get excited for next year’s highly anticipated, superhero-filled “The Avengers.” When MTV News caught up with Cap himself, Chris Evans , during our “MTV First: Captain America” interview Thursday, we asked for his thoughts on working with fan-favorite “Avengers” director Joss Whedon. “He’s unbelievable,” Evans said. “He’s so clever. He lives in the world of comic books, so he has in his head an amazing story already mapped out. When it comes to directing actors and understanding dialogue, he’s an incredibly talented writer. If something isn’t working for you as an actor within the words, he can walk away for 10 minutes and come back with seven options that are all fantastic and clever and witty and it’s got a pace and a banter,” he explained. “He’s a great guy to be quarterbacking this thing.” With regard to Captain America’s story line in “The Avengers,” the details of which Evans couldn’t fully divulge but are briefly teased at the end of “Captain America,” he said his character is basically a fish out of water trying to understand the modern world around him. “It’s really multifaceted. The guy has to accept the fact that everyone he knew and loved is gone,” Evans said of his character’s new arc. “Not only is he alone, [but] the world has changed so much, and I think a big part of what makes Cap Cap was his connection to the way things used to be, this kind of pro-American morality and good-ol’-boy sense of life and the way of doing things,” he added. “In the modern era, there’s a bit of a disconnect. There’s not as much human interaction. I think there’s more cynicism than there was back then, so it’s him trying to come to terms with the way things are.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Captain America: The First Avenger.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Chris Evans Says Iron Man Would Beat Captain America In A Fight

‘Captain America’ star opened up in rapid-fire Twitter session with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Chris Evans Photo: MTV News Though the world’s attention is focused on Chris Evans in anticipation of his turns as Captain America in “Captain America: The First Avenger” and “The Avengers,” at heart Evans is just an average Joe who likes singing show tunes in the shower. MTV News’ Josh Horowitz set out to find the softer side of America’s superhero during a rapid-fire Twitter session with him on “MTV First: Captain America.” Evans revealed that he prefers his eggs scrambled, has a celebrity crush on Salma Hayek and still gets starstruck around Michael Jordan. But fans who submitted their Twitter questions wanted to know the real Chris Evans, the man that they would bring home to meet their parents. When asked whether he’s a good date, Evans admitted that he has some pretty good moves for the ladies. “Oh yeah, I’m a great date,” he said with confidence. “Chivalry was a big thing in my household. If you didn’t hold the door for a woman, my mother’s going to knock your head in.” Considering his superhero background, questions quickly became comic book-based. Apparently Evans’ favorite masked hero growing up was neither Captain America nor Johnny Blaze, both of whom he’s played on the big screen, but Spider-Man. At least he kept the answer within the Marvel family. Evans again voted against his onscreen alter ego when asked whether Iron Man or Captain America would win in a fight. “Unfortunately, probably Iron Man,” he confessed. “I’ve got to be honest. I’m being real.” Hopefully fans will get a chance to see that showdown once “The Avengers” hits the big screen. The most important question of the bunch, though, ended up being the one with the most surprising answer. One Twitter follower asked Evans what song he likes to sing in the shower, but Evans was too embarrassed to give a direct answer. “I grew up doing theater, so unfortunately it’s probably going to be in the world of show tunes,” Evans said with a laugh. When Horowitz prompted him to give up just one song he loves, the “Captain America” star refused. “It’s bad. I can’t even go any more than that,” he said, but then let slip that he’s a sucker for “Rent.” Well, today for you, tomorrow for us, Chris! ‘Boyz N The Hood’ Stars Hailed ‘Classic Movie’ Back In 1991

MTV News looks back on our interview with the all-star cast and director as the South Central L.A. tale was hitting theaters 20 years ago. By Rob Markman Ice Cube in “Boyz N The Hood” Photo: Columbia Pictures In a 1991 interview with MTV News to promote the just-released “Boyz N the Hood,” Laurence Fishburne seemed to know what kind of impact the coming-of-age story would have. “John Singleton has made a classic movie,” the actor said. Twenty years later, fans are still singing its praises. This past Tuesday, “Boyz N the Hood” celebrated its 20-year anniversary , and on July 19, the film will be re-released in Blu-ray format. The film, starring Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr., Morris Chestnut and Laurence Fishburne, is set in South Central, Los Angeles, a California neighborhood notorious for gang violence. At the center of the film is Tre Styles (Gooding Jr.), who tries to balance his father’s (Fishburne) life lessons with the harsh realities of the ‘hood in which he lived. Then there are half-brothers Doughboy (Cube) and Ricky Baker (Chestnut), two characters who couldn’t be more different. Doughboy, a stone-cold gangster, has street respect but very few prospects. His brother Ricky, however, is a young father and a star high school football player fielding sports scholarships from multiple colleges. In the end, Ricky’s bright future is brought to a dark close when he’s gunned down in an alleyway. “Well, this is the film that I initially went to film school to make,” director Singleton explained to MTV News in the same 1991 interview, days after the film hit theaters. “I had never seen films that reflected where I was coming from growing up in L.A.” “There are so many messages in the film, but if they go and take one message away, it’s to keep the love in the family. As long as the love is circulating around, it’ll be OK,” Gooding Jr. said. “It’s a new kind of perspective,” Fishburne added. Even Cube, who made his Hollywood debut in “Boyz N the Hood,” knew back then that the movie would be impactful. “I think we got a real good film. Just to show black people on the screen being people and not just images, as far as not a sports player or a hat and a gun,” he said. “You fall in love with these characters, and it’s real deep when something happens to them.” And that’s why 20 years later, we’re still watching. Chris Evans Reveals He Said ‘No Thanks’ To ‘Captain America’

Actor was pursued for role, he tells Josh Horowitz on ‘MTV First: Captain America.’ By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Chris Evans Photo: MTV News Captain America was the role that seemingly every actor in Hollywood but Chris Evans wanted to play. The actor opens up to MTV’s Josh Horowitz Thursday night (July 14) during “MTV First: Captain America,” saying that the decision to join up as a Marvel Avenger was not an easy one. Still, director Joe Johnston and producer Kevin Feige were persistent, and knew they wanted Evans so badly that they never even made him audition for the role. “I got a call and they said they want me to audition, and I said, ‘Great!’ And then I thought about it and I said, ‘No thanks.’ And then they called back and they said, ‘Well, they want you to test,’ and testing is basically they’ll draw up a contract, and if you’re testing then you’re only testing with a couple other guys and the odds of walking away with it drastically increase. And again I just said, ‘I think I’m good. This isn’t really what I’m looking for,’ ” Evans explained. But even after he turned the contract down twice, it was clear that the studio still wanted him. Marvel was willing to negotiate with Evans and bring the intended nine-picture deal down to only six, and after meeting with Johnston and Feige, Evans said he was willing to give the character a shot. “It just seemed like the more I walked away the more they pursued,” he admitted. This is not the first time Evans has told MTV News that he felt uncomfortable taking on the commitment and fame that would come with “Captain America: The First Avenger.” During MTV News’ live stream at San Diego Comic-Con last year, Evans said that taking the role “wasn’t an easy yes.” “[Playing] Captain America just changes things, and there’s really no off switch once you walk down that road,” Evans said. “There’s no turning back now. I’m just trying to make all the negatives positives and just enjoy the ride.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Captain America: The First Avenger.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
