Drake Show Shut Down By NYPD

‘I am humbled by the crowd that showed up in support of my performance,’ rapper tells MTV News in a statement. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: Rahman Dukes/MTV News NEW YORK — A Drake show scheduled for Tuesday evening (June 15) in Manhattan was canceled by the New York Police Department after crowd control became a safety concern for organizers of the event. Upward of 10, 000 fans lined the South Street Seaport and even more were present on the outskirts of the venue, lurking, in hopes of spotting the Toronto rapper. Drake was set to appear onstage at 7:45 p.m. ET, but leading up to his appearance, the crowd swelled to a larger-than-expected size. Organizers of the event, sponsored by Paper magazine and also featuring Hanson and Ninjasonik, began slowly asking attendees to be prepared for a cancellation. Confusion abounded just moments later, however, as concertgoers jockeyed for closer positions to the stage, unaware of any danger. Ultimately, police pulled the plug on the event and began trying to disperse bystanders. Drake — celebrating the release of his debut album, Thank Me Later, on Tuesday — tried to notify his fans via Twitter that he was unable to take the stage. “Police are shutting down the show at South Seaport! I’m on my way anyways,” he wrote. “Drizzy Hendrix Woodstock 2010.” The upstart MC, though, was understandably disappointed he was unable to share in the excitement with his fans and issued a statement apologizing to his fans. “I am humbled by the crowd that showed up in support of my performance and the release of Thank Me Later, ” Drake told MTV News in a statement. “I love performing for my fans, but unfortunately, the show was canceled by the NYPD due to overcrowding, leaving me without the chance to give my fans a real show. I’m thankful for the support that the fans have been giving me … I thank you now.” Fans were also disappointed, but many feared for their own safety as people fought, threw items from nearby restaurants and even trampled other attendees. New York University student Adam Vinson spoke with MTV News and described the chaotic scene. “People didn’t know how to have manners,” he said. “Everyone was up against each other pushing. There was just too many people there. In New York City, though, people are gonna come from out of state, and in the city, there’s already millions of people. The concert goers packed and people started fighting. “I saw dudes fighting,” he added. “One dude said he was gonna light this place up; it was that serious. Once I saw that, it was my cue to leave. People started pushing, bottles were thrown and once dude threatened to shoot, people started trying to get out.” What would you do in that situation? Let us know in the comments. NewNowNext Event Brought Out The Old of the Day

NewNowNext Event makes me laugh because with a name like that you’d expect the shit to generate some interest for up and coming stars, not bitches I used to jerk off to in the 90s. Seriously, what the fuck happened to Carmen Electra. I remember thinking she really had it going on, but then one day she disappeared and I guess me and everyone else forgot about her, until now…because I guess she’s planning on making a comeback, I mean why else would she be at the NewNextNow event, but in all liklihood, maybe they had free food, something her lack of work bank account appreciates… Here’s Perez Hilton, another soon to be has-been who was at the event begging for attention…cuz I don’t know anyone who bothers with his site now that there’s TMZ and RadarOnline…but when the motherfucker is dressed like this…I don’t mind posting it…cuz it’s too weird, trying too hard, too lame to be ignored…seriously – what the fuck is this…what a fucking joke. More people need to punch him. Pics via Bauer

"Forever Michael" Jackson Memorial Not Really Official

The anniversary of Michael Jackson’s tragic death is right around the corner, and for $150 a ticket, you can pay tribute to him at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Just one problem: The event is not sanctioned by his estate. ” Forever Michael ” is being thrown by The Jackson Family Foundation and VoicePlate.com. Sounds official, right? Especially with Joe and Katherine Jackson going, along with Michael’s children Paris, Prince and Blanket? How awesome. Except for the fact that Katherine and the kids won’t even be in town on the day of the event. So … what’s going on here? Can the event even go on? According to the VoicePlate site, “A portion of the proceeds for this event will be presented to some of Michael Jackson’s favorite charities at the event.” As for what portion goes to charity and where the rest goes … founder Joseph Fahmy wouldn’t say, although he did say he just hopes to break even. It’s all news to the Michael Jackson estate. Howard Weitzman, its lawyer, says “No one contacted the Estate to see whether or not they would approve, participate in, or allow the use of Michael’s name, likeness, image or intellectual property.” That doesn’t sound good for the vent.

Rick Ross, T.I., Drake Rep The Dirty South At ‘VH1 Hip Hop Honors’

Timbaland, Lil Jon, Paul Wall and others also performed at the event, which airs Monday on VH1. By Jayson Rodriguez Rick Ross Photo: Getty Images NEW YORK — “VH1 Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South” might have represented Atlanta, Texas, Miami, New Orleans and everywhere in between, but all points were a unified front for the event Thursday night (June 3) at the Hammerstein Ballroom. “I always say the East Coast is one piece of bread, and the West Coast is another piece of bread,” honoree J. Prince of Rap-a-Lot Records said during the tribute. “And the South is the meat. I describe it that way, ’cause everyone has roots in the South.” Drake, Bun B, the Game, Juvenile and the Geto Boys’ Willie D all performed as a part of the Rap-a-Lot set. Drake paid homage to the late Pimp C as he and Bun joined forces for “Get Throwed.” “Office” actor Craig Robinson replaced Tracy Morgan as host of the festivities, and with the help of Lil Jon and Paul Wall, he received a Southern makeover. “You got to put your money where your mouth is,” Jon told the host, as Paul Wall “DDS” presented Robinson with grillz. Jon and Wall scored plenty of laughs throughout the night via a series of sketches. In one, the pair attempted to dole out directions to a bystander, but the combination of slang (“slabs” and “shawty”) left him confused. Paul Wall also put in time onstage as he, Chamillionaire and Slim Thug were part of the Texas tribute. The Lone Star State, Miami and Atlanta were all recognized, in addition to official honorees Master P, Timbaland, Jermaine Dupri, J. Prince, Luther Campbell and 2 Live Crew, and Outkast producers Organized Noize. JD’s set rivaled the Rap-a-Lot tribute for the highlight of the evening. The producer brought out Dem Franchize Boyz, Diddy and Bow Wow, who brought fans to their feet when he rose from the audience with his clothes on backward, in honor of Kris Kross. ” ‘Cause inside-out is wiggity wiggity wack,” he rapped. Uncle Luke suffered through technical difficulties during the 2 Live Crew set. Mannie Fresh helped keep things moving throughout the delay, shouting out Tony Draper and his pioneering company Suave House Records. Master P’s tribute went through without a hitch. His son Romeo, brother Silkk the Shocker, Trina and Mystikal hit the stage to pay homage. Mystikal was a frenetic force of energy, as he and Romeo performed P’s breakout hit “Make ‘Em Say Ugh.” Gucci Mane, T.I., Bone Crusher, DJ Drama and the Ying Yang twins honored Atlanta, while Trick Daddy, Pitbull, Flo Rida, and Trina repped for Miami. Rick Ross and DJ Khaled proved to be showstoppers as the pair put on mink coats for the Boss’ latest single, “Super High.” Producer Timbaland and Organized Noize brought out a bevy of guest to celebrate their discography, from Fabolous and Keri Hilson to Nelly and Asher Roth. “VH1 Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South” airs Monday at 9 p.m. on VH1.
