Katy Perry Isn’t Looking To Top Herself On Next Album

‘I’m gonna follow my heart as I always have and hopefully people will like it,’ singer tells MTV News. By Christina Garibaldi Katy Perry Photo: Theo Wargo/ Getty Images One would think that after Katy Perry releases Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, the final chapter of her highly successful album Teenage Dream, later this month, she would be ready to take a break. Think again. Following the chart-topping success of her single “Part of Me,” which she insists is not a jab at former husband Russell Brand , Perry has already begun thinking about the concept of her next album. “I don’t want to jinx myself ’cause I haven’t stepped into the studio. I have an idea — I always have an idea. Like, I have an idea for the next two records; it just depends,” Perry told MTV News in Los Angeles. “What I say is, I’m gonna kind of put my finger out there and test the pulse or test the waters of what the world wants, or what I need to say, which is probably most important rather than what the world wants.” Coming off the success of Teenage Dream, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and produced five #1 singles, Perry is not looking to outdo herself on her next musical effort. She’s just going to follow her instincts. “I don’t want to give too much away. I also don’t want to play the game of trying to continually top myself because eventually it may not always go as I planned,” the singer said. “I may not get to be able to have another #1, so I’m just gonna do what feels right for me artistically. I’m very inspired at the moment, and so I’m gonna follow my heart as I always have and hopefully people will like it.” Perry, who also revealed that she “has a lot to say” on her next album, told “Saturday Night Live” star Kristen Wiig in Interview magazine that her music is “about to get real f—ing dark.” But she promises that her die-hard fans will still be able to relate to this next step in her musical journey. “I imagine that maybe my next record would be a little bit more of an artistic venture,” Perry said. “Not that I’m going to self-sabotage either and be like, ‘I’m going to make a crazy record that nobody really understands.’ ” What do you hope to hear on Katy Perry’s next album? Will Justin Bieber’s Big-Screen Dreams Come True?

On his 18th birthday, we take a look at the superstar’s upcoming acting gigs. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Justin Bieber Photo: Valery Hache/ AFP/ Getty Images By this point, it’s no secret that Justin Bieber has his sights set on the silver screen. Ever since his meteoric rise to stardom and his success with the concert film “Never Say Never,” talk has circulated about his first dramatic film projects. Now, on his 18th birthday, let’s take a closer look at Bieber’s big-screen potential! We got an early look at his acting chops on an episode of “CSI,” in which he played troubled teen Jason McCann and was famously blown away in a hail of gunfire. The cameo indicated his purported desire to take on darker roles, along the lines of those played by Mark Wahlberg. The most concrete movie project on the horizon for Bieber actually involves Wahlberg . The two have been developing a basketball movie, in the vein of “The Color of Money.” Wahlberg will play a weathered baller who takes a younger player (Bieber) under his wing. MTV News spoke with Wahlberg about the project , and he said his interest in working with the pop star comes from his intuition about Bieber’s acting ability. “I see the guy and spent time with him, and you see what he does and how he does it,” Wahlberg said. “Then you actually have a conversation with him, and it’s there.” The basketball project is currently in development at Paramount. Another Wahlberg-related project with Bieber’s name attached is a rumored remake of the 1996 film “Fear.” MovieWeb reported back in January that Bieber is supposedly “obsessed” with the movie and hopes to land the psychotic role to mirror Wahlberg’s career path. There hasn’t been an update on the remake’s progress since. Happy 18th birthday, Justin Bieber ! Now that we’ve counted down the superstar’s 18 greatest moments, stick with MTV News as we celebrate the milestone all day. Related Videos Happy Birthday, Justin Bieber! Katy Perry Says ‘Sims 3: Showtime’ Is ‘So Layered’

‘You can change my Sim’s hair color two or three times a day if you want to, which is basically what I want to do,’ Perry tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Katy Perry’s character in “The Sims 3: Showtime” Photo: Electronic Arts, Inc. Katy Perry ‘s already earned her advanced degree in Simlish, having recorded a version of in the fictional language of the long-running “Sims” game series. But in the upcoming “The Sims 3: Showtime,” she’s putting that degree to good use. “I loved being a part of the creative process — which outfits is my Sim going to have, what kind of hair color. Because when we were creating it together, I [had] pink hair, now I’m blue hair, but you have so many options,” she laughed. “And with this Sims, you can be a medley of different … career choices. Like a magician, a musician, a DJ, an acrobat and, like … I’m going to do all of them. I feel like I’m already multitasking in real life, but in my alternate reality, as a Sim, I would love to sing ‘Firework,’ twirling a baton of fire while levitating, doing the splits, and DJing. It might be a little much, but it would be highly entertaining.” It would, indeed. In the game, players guide their Sim on a voyage to fame, honing their craft (be it magic, tumbling, or DJing) in performances and paying their dues before eventually becoming superstars. And that’s part of the reason Perry agreed to sign on to the project — after all, she knows a thing or two about that voyage. “Some of the nuances and details are really hilarious, [and] it’s so layered. You could be playing the same game for years and still be discovering things, so it’s awesome to be a part of it,” she said. “I love that you don’t have any shortcuts with your journey. … It’s great, because you actually have to pay your dues in the game, and I think it kind of, in some ways, teaches whoever’s playing it a valuable life lesson that it’s all about hard work and nothing comes to you on a silver platter.” Of course, there are also some additional, Perry-specific perks too. “This game is very creative and very natural for me. I love that, for instance, you can change my Sim’s hair color two or three times a day if you want to, which is basically what I want to do,” she laughed. “I can’t, or I’d have to shave my head or my hair would just fall out. So it’s got so many different features.” Will you check out Perry in the new “Sims” game? Let us know in the comments! Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Katy Perry Related Artists Katy Perry

‘American Idol’ Judge Randy Jackson Has ‘Crazy Taste’

Fellow ‘Idol’ judge Jennifer Lopez dishes to MTV News about working alongside ‘most positive’ person. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Jennifer Lopez Photo: MTV News As season 11 of “American Idol” chugs along, it’s clear that Jennifer Lopez , Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler have found their footing and place with one another. The threesome is already into their second season as the show’s brain trust, and J.Lo is revealing just what makes sharing the judging panel with “Idol” vet Jackson so great. “He has all different kinds of sunglasses. There was one pair where I was like, ‘Those are too big … those are just too big!’ and he’s like, ‘I love these,’ ” she laughed to MTV News during a recent chat about the Fox reality singing competition. “The thing I love about Randy is he’s always so positive, even when he gives negative criticism on the show, ’cause he’s the hardest of all of us.” While Jackson is straight up when it comes to his feelings about the contestants’ talent — or lack thereof — it’s his cool “dawg” demeanor that makes his criticism a much easier pill to swallow. “He’ll straight-out tell you that was awful. We won’t say it,” she said, adding that she and Tyler don’t verbalize their feelings as straightforwardly. “Even though he’s that guy, he’s the most positive and the most great-energy person ever. He can laugh at himself so genuinely at the same time. He’s just an amazing person.” As amazing as his judging style is Jackson’s aforementioned sense of style, which reaches far beyond spectacles. “And he loves crazy sunglasses and I love them on him. Without the glasses, it’s not really Randy — that and the shoes. He has a crazy taste in those things, like a little bit out there,” she said. “Not mad at that.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber Share A Dating ‘Philosophy’

‘If you’re in love, you’re in love to the fullest,’ singer/actress tells Cosmopolitan. By Jocelyn Vena Photo: Cosmopolitan Selena Gomez turns the big 2-0 later this year, and she seems to be leaving her tween image behind. The 19-year-old is the latest teen star to appear on the cover of Cosmopolitan, following last month’s issue of the women’s magazine, featuring 17-year-old Dakota Fanning. For her first cover for the magazine, Gomez dons a low-cut, floral-print dress as she looks rather seductively into the camera. She’s sitting with her one leg perched in front of her body, displaying a saucier side of herself than fans might be used to seeing. Inside the issue, she’s talking all about love, opening up about her longtime boyfriend, Justin Bieber. “I’m just like every 19-year-old girl,” she said. “If you’re in love, you’re in love to the fullest, and you just want to go to the movies, hang out, and be as normal as possible. I’m fortunate that I’ve found someone who has that philosophy.” In another Cosmo quote floating around online, Gomez dishes on a past boyfriend (Taylor Lautner? Nick Jonas?) who didn’t make things as easy on her. “I was in a relationship previously where I had to hide everything and it wasn’t my choice. I had to go through different exits and take separate cars and do the craziest things, and it just really wasn’t worth it,” she explained. “It was like a year of my life completely wasted.” The more mature magazine cover comes as Gomez prepares for the next phase of her career . In the coming weeks, she’ll hit the set for her next film, the more adult-themed “Spring Breakers,” which follows a group of college girls who rob a restaurant to pay for their spring break. When they land in jail, a drug and arms dealer bails them out, and they quickly become entangled with him and his business. “It’s a different character than I have ever played before,” she told MTV News about the film, which will be directed by “Kids” mastermind Harmony Korine. “It’s a different kind of vibe I think than people are used to seeing me in. What you’re going to see is more raw, I think. It’s going to be raw and more about acting.” What do you think about Selena’s grown-up image? Let us know in the comments! Paula Abdul Speaks Out About ‘X Factor’ Exit

Abdul confirms news in statement and says ‘business decisions often times override personal considerations.’ By Kara Warner Paula Abdul Photo: Mark Davis/ Gety Images We’ve only had a few hours to digest the three very surprising exits from “X Factor” that were announced Monday, and we’re still scratching our heads at what happened over at Fox to make such drastic changes to the singing competition . For many fans, the biggest shock was Simon Cowell and company’s letting go of original “American Idol” diva and delightfully unpredictable judge Paula Abdul, who has since released a statement about her departure. “Yes, it’s true; I won’t be returning to The X Factor next season,” Abdul said in a statement. “I’ve learned through my longevity in this industry that business decisions often times override personal considerations. Simon and I, along with Fox and Fremantle, have been communicating about this for a while now, and I have absolute understanding of the situation. Simon is, and will remain a dear friend of mine and I’ve treasured my experience working this past season with my extended family at Fox and Fremantle. I want nothing more than for The X Factor to exceed ALL of their wildest dreams. This truly has been a blessing and I am most grateful.” Although they have not released official statements as of yet, we expect to hear from the other two ousted “X Factor” folks, Nicole Scherzinger and host Steve Jones , sometime soon. The former Pussycat Doll and “Dancing With the Stars” champ will reportedly turn her attention back to her music career, while Abdul and Jones will be looking for their next big things. As far as we know, L.A. Reid will continue to work alongside Cowell on the judging panel. There has been no word yet from Fox on who might replace Abdul, Scherzinger and Jones, or when season two will premiere. What do you think Paula Abdul should do after “X Factor”? Chris Brown Drops New Single ‘Turn Up The Music’

Brown revisits electronic-dance sound for first single from Fortune. By Christina Garibaldi Chris Brown’s “Turn Up The Music” Photo: RCA Chris Brown is getting the club banging with “Turn Up the Music.” The first single from Brown’s upcoming album, Fortune, was released Thursday (January 26), and much like his 2010 hit “Yeah 3x,” Brown revisits an electronic-dance sound that is destined to get people in the clubs and on the dance floor. The track, which was written and produced by the Underdogs and will be available at all digital music stores February 14, is a house-inspired song with a pulsing beat that has Breezy singing, “Turn up the music, ’cause the sun just came up/ Turn up the music if they try to turn us down/ Turn up the music, ’cause I’m trying to hear the speakers blow/ Turn up the music, fill your cup and drink it down,” followed by repeated chants of “If you’re sexy and you know it, put your hands up in the air.” With a release date for Fortune to be announced soon, Brown is in the studio putting the finishing touches on his fifth studio album, the follow-up to 2011’s F.A.M.E. Back in October, Brown reached out to Team Breezy via Twitter , revealing a single from his upcoming album. “STRIP [from Brown’s Boy in Detention mixtape] is one of the singles off of FORTUNE so request at RADIO!” Brown tweeted. Fans can’t expect Brown to be doing much more than tweeting about this album: Earlier this month Brown’s manager, Tina Davis , told Billboard magazine that the singer wouldn’t be doing any interviews in 2012. “We’re not trying to be rude, selfish or disrespectful to anyone in any way,” she told the mag. “If people are going to judge anything, judge him for his talent. He signed up to sing and entertain, not to talk about his personal life.” What do you think of “Turn Up the Music”? Share your reviews in the comments! Lana Del Rey: ‘I Don’t Love Live Television’

Before ‘Saturday Night Live,’ singer said, ‘You can’t expect too much.’ By Gil Kaufman Lana Del Rey on “Saturday Night Live” Photo: NBC It’s been a rough few days for singer Lana Del Rey. Her instantly legendary awkward network TV debut on “Saturday Night Live”
has been dissected, dissed and defended endlessly since last weekend. But the one thing we haven’t heard in the wake of the polarizing performance is how Del Rey feels about how she did. While she still hasn’t officially commented on the criticism, the singer spoke to the Fuse network just days before the “SNL” gig and said that, frankly, live performance is not really her thing. “You can’t expect too much from my show,” Del Rey said, explaining that her real fans are probably aware that she’s more of a songwriter and studio musician than performer and that she thinks people who come to see her show are really just there to hear the songs they already like. “Sometimes I feel less nervous than other times,” she added. “I don’t love live television. The only tip I have is just pray and just hope that things work out.” That attitude pretty much fits what Del Rey told MTV News
before “SNL,” when she said she finds singing on TV “weird.” “[It] depends on the day,” Del Rey said. “Depends on what’s going on with my family and everyone around me. If I have other things to think about, or I’m trying to get things done for somebody else, and I’m not in my own way, then … I’m like, ‘This doesn’t really matter.’ Sometimes it seems more important to me than other times.” And though everyone from “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams to actress Eliza Dushku and singer/actress Juliette Lewis (whose tweets have since been deleted) piled on Del Rey in the moment, since the dust has settled a bit, another actress has come out in defense of the singer. “Whitney” star and stand-up comedian Whitney Cummings, who faced her fair share of criticism when her NBC sitcom debuted last year, posted a blog on Thursday in which she pleaded with haters to chill out. “I have many random thoughts. First, everybody calm down,” she wrote. “It’s a little troubling that when a young girl fails at something that we keep kicking her why she is down. I get very protective of girls, especially young performers, because they live a hard, emotionally challenging, often physically challenging life where you are constantly given reasons to be insecure and have panic attacks. I totally get the stuff about her not deserving to be there and I don’t mean to insult musicians in any way if that’s how they feel obviously, but this is an opportunity to show us how hard being a performer is so maybe they can all be cut some slack.” Cummings honed her act for years on the stand-up circuit before breaking through last year with her sitcom and a producer and co-creator credit on “2 Broke Girls,” and she said she doesn’t feel qualified to judge Del Rey’s performance. “It takes a long time to get good, and even when you are good, you can be challenged by new venues and being televised, and cameras, and the uh…fear and terror of being slammed by critics and bloggers,” she wrote. “Plus if you are a woman you also get fashion criticism and if you’re a pretty woman you’re accused of having plastic surgery and if you’re not you’re ‘busted’ and people blog about how they don’t want to f— you … it’s not ideal.” Add into that mix the self-hate and self-criticism that many artists have, and Cummings said even when things go perfectly, it’s still hard. “So when it goes bad, it’s just the worst vortex of misery,” she said. “If she fell on her face, she was there, she felt it, and her having lived it is punishment enough. We don’t need to keep bashing her unless it makes us feel better about ourselves which … isn’t an ideal reason to hate someone.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Lana Del Rey Related Artists Lana Del Rey

Nick Cannon ‘Getting Back to Business’

TV personality tweets photo from the hospital after suffering kidney failure earlier this week. By Jocelyn Vena Nick Cannon Photo: FilmMagic Apparently you can’t keep Nick Cannon down for long. Just days after being hospitalized for mild kidney failure , the TV personality let his fans know he’s ready to put it all behind him. Cannon took to Twitter to post a photo of himself in the hospital, getting his hair cut. He tweeted simply, “getting back to business.” He later took to the social networking site to promote some of his pals who were DJing in Los Angeles. One of Cannon’s DJ friends spoke to People.com about his condition. “I was beyond shocked when I learned Nick had a kidney issue,” DJ Irie said. “Of all the people, he is healthy beyond belief. He does not drink, he eats healthy and he works out regularly.” The cause of Cannon’s kidney failure is still unknown, and his friend reiterated just how well he takes care of himself. “Nick practices all of these healthy habits every day of his life,” he said. “But he is rational and smart and taking care of it by being in the hospital, where he belongs now.” Cannon was transferred to an L.A.-area facility after initially being hospitalized in Aspen, where he was vacationing with his wife, Mariah Carey, and their twins, Moroccan and Monroe. “As always, he’s in good spirits considering the situation,” Carey said about her hubby, noting that he was “in a lot of pain” and that “the situation is not easy. We really appreciate everybody’s love and support.” Related Artists Nick Cannon
