Fair Or Foul: Photographer Of Gay Pride Recreation Of Iwo Jima Photo Receives Death Theats

Gay Pride Recreation Of Iwo Jima Photo Gets Backlash How far can you take gay pride ?? Via NBC Washington : Joe Rosenthal’s historic photograph depicting five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising the flag on Iwo Jima is one of America’s most iconic war-related images. It is also one of the most parodied images, but a recent depiction of the event sparked fury on social media. On June 26, photographer Ed Freeman posted a picture he took more than a decade ago for the cover of Frontiers, a gay magazine, that shows four male models planting a gay pride flag similarly to how the six soldiers planted the flag at Iwo Jima 70 years ago. Freeman’s Facebook post celebrated the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision to allowing same-sex marriage nationwide. “Altering the American flag colors && trying to remake the “Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima” photograph with the gay pride flag is degrading,” one user said. “I get all that gay marriage stuff but to replace the American flag from the iconic Iwo Jima picture, just no,” another post read. Freeman, whose studio is in Los Angeles, told the Post he even received a death threat that he reported to the FBI. “This picture was just a flashpoint for a lot people who are looking for a reason to lash out, so I guess I get to be the whipping boy,” Freeman told the Post about the backlash. “I’m fine with that if that’s what it takes.” The Iwo Jima motif has appeared elsewhere, including to sell beer and promote the Hard Rock Cafe, and its use has been similarly criticized. In 2008, Time magazine was criticized for using an altered version of the Iwo Jima photograph showing soldiers planting a tree. That cover, which was meant to compare the struggle to win the war to the struggle to combat climate change, even drew condemnation from some fellow journalists. Do you think the photo is disrespectful to America??

The Internet Is Real Life: Milwaukee Teen Shot Dead After Facebook Feud Over Girl

14-Year-Old Killed In Milwaukee After Facebook Fight Over A Girl Can we PLEASE stop acting like the things that happen online don’t have real life consequences. The phrase “It’s just the internet” needs to be put to rest… Via Fox6 A 14-year-old boy is dead after a fight over a girl on Facebook led to a shooting near the intersection of N. Lake and E. Wyoming on Milwaukee’s east side. The shooting took place at approximately 10:30 p.m. Friday night, July 3rd. Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn addressed the media and stated eight or nine shots were fired while officers were patrolling the U.S. Bank Fireworks on Milwaukee’s lakefront — just yards from the shooting. The 14-year-old boy was found pulseless after being shot in the head. Five officers in relay teams worked to save the boy. The officers were able to get a pulse back but the boy later died at Children’s Hospital. “Words can’t express our frustration,” said Chief Flynn in a news conference with reporters. “This is more than a crime wave, this is a social phenomenon.” Authorities say they do have leads in regards to the suspect who shot the boy — but no one is in custody at this time. R.I.P. to this young man, thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones. Image via Shutterstock

Race Matters: Gay Star Trek Actor George Takei Says Clarence Thomas Is A “Clown In Blackface” For Same Sex Marriage Dissent

Star Trek’s George Takei Says Clarence Thomas Is A “Clown In Blackface George Takei boldly goes where many have gone before… Via HuffingtonPost George Takei has come under fire this week for calling Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas a “clown in blackface” over the judge’s stance on marriage equality. However, the “Star Trek” actor insists that his comment was not racially motivated. During an interview with Fox 10 Phoenix, Takei, who is gay, discussed the Supreme Court’s recent landmark ruling to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. Takei said he was “angry” at Thomas, who dissented to the decision, for his position on the issue. “He is a clown in blackface sitting on the Supreme Court,” said Takei. “He gets me that angry. He doesn’t belong there.” In his dissent, Thomas, who is black, wrote that “human dignity cannot be taken away by the government,” adding: “Slaves did not lose their dignity (any more than they lost their humanity) because the government allowed them to be enslaved. Those held in internment camps did not lose their dignity because the government confined them.” Suffice to say, George ain’t feelin’ ol’ Clarence. Takei, whose family was held inside a Japanese internment camp during World War II, took issue with this logic. “For him to say slaves have dignity, I mean, doesn’t he know that slaves were in chains? That they were whipped on the back?” Takei said. “My parents lost everything that they worked for in the middle of their lives, in their 30s. His business, my father’s business, our home, our freedom and we’re supposed to call that dignified?… This man does not belong on the Supreme Court. He is an embarrassment. He is a disgrace to America.” After a slew of backlash, George took to Facebook to further clarify his incendiary comments: A few fans have written wondering whether I intended to utter a racist remark by referring to Justice Thomas as a “clown in blackface.” “Blackface” is a lesser known theatrical term for a white actor who blackens his face to play a black buffoon. In traditional theater lingo, and in my view and intent, that is not racist. It is instead part of a racist history in this country. I feel Justice Thomas has abdicated and abandoned his African American heritage by claiming slavery did not strip dignity from human beings. He made a similar remark about the Japanese American internment, of which I am a survivor. A sitting Justice of the Supreme Court ought to know better. I have expressed my full thoughts on the matter here. We can’t say that the term “blackface” is a “lesser known” theatrical term, at this point in time we’re pretty sure that most folks know EXACTLY what it means. “To say that the government does not bestow or grant dignity does not mean it cannot succeed in stripping it away through the imposition of unequal laws and deprivation of due process. At the very least, the government must treat all its subjects with equal human dignity,” he wrote. “It seems odd that Justice Thomas, as an African American, would be an opponent of marriage equality. His own current marriage, if he had sought to have it some fifty years ago, would have been illegal under then-existing anti-miscegenation laws. I cannot help but wonder if Justice Thomas would have felt any loss of dignity had the clerk’s office doors been shut in his face, simply because he was of a different race than his fiancée.” What do think of George’s remark? Many in the black community have used this term and many other pejoratives to describe Justice Thomas over the years. Are you uncomfortable with someone outside of the community using this kind of language toward a black man? Image via AP/WENN

Awesomely Insane Woman Rails Against Gay Marriage

The totally insane woman in this video has a question for anyone celebrating the legalization of gay marriage : Are you a Christian? Actually, sorry. Let us do a better impression of the totally insane woman in this video. She's really asking: ARE YOU A CHRISTIAN?!?!?!?!?!?!? We hate to help turn Indiana native Becky Wegner Rommel into a viral sensation, but some videos are too amazing not to share… even when those videos are filled with hate and maniacal ranting. Rommel is entitled to her opinion on gay marriage, of course, but she goes off in this footage (which she uploaded to Facebook) about Islamic “Extremlists” (that’s not a misspelling on our part), while decreeing over and over that “five justices decided God was wrong.” She also has strong takes on abortion and how God did on a cross for the “very people who are spitting on His face right now” and on how disappointing the Founding Fathers must be in this Supreme Court decision. Becky ends by begging her fellow Christians to take a stand. It's safe to say someone does not believe love won last week. This poor woman.

Marriage Boot Camp Season 3 Episode 5 Recap: Kendra Gets So Wet

Last night on Marriage Boot Camp Season 3 Episode 5, the embattled couples’ skills were put to the test by way of a blindfolded canoe race. Watch Marriage Boot Camp Season 3 Episode 5 Online When Marriage Boot Camp Season 3 Episode 5 , entitled “Troubled Waters,” got underway, Aubrey and Travis were forced to clean the stables. As punishment for breaking a promise not to argue, natch. Fortunately, they had a chance to cool off – although things also got more heated – during the canoe race that the couples had to take part in. Petrified of water, Tami bailed on the drill and stormed back to the house before she even left the dock, while Jeff’s temper left Jordan in tears. Amid the furious paddling, confusion and chaos, and unbeknownst to the couples, the race was to be decided on communication, not speed. The duos were shocked at who actually won, and the results left the group even more divided. But the worst was yet to come on this night. Taking part in a role reversal exercise and reenacting a typical fight between them put the spotlight back on Kendra Wilkinson once again. Kendra’s denial and Hank’s resistance regarding the great Ava London Half Relief Scandal of ’14 drove home a trio of intertwining points: These two characters are seriously pieces of work You can’t believe anything on TV isn’t staged They may well milk this scandal for years You gotta watch Marriage Boot Camp online to truly appreciate the ridiculousness of which we speak, but that does sum it up well. Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard: Leaving US For Missionary Work!

When Derick Dillard quit his job at Wal-Mart  earlier this month, there was much speculation regarding why a newlywed first-time father would leave a comfortable position in the career field of his choice. Some guessed that Derick was preparing for a role on the long-rumored Jill and Jessa Duggar spinoff series. Others assumed his departure was part of the family’s effort to keep a low profile in the wake of the Josh sexual abuse scandal . Now, the reason for Derick’s career change has become clear, and many are taking it as a sign that 19 Kids and Counting will never return to the airwaves. “God has put a desire in our hearts to serve Him internationally for longer than the typical short-term mission trip, but we didn’t know yet how God would fulfill that desire in us,” Derick and wife Jill Dillard wrote on their personal blog. “Earlier this year God brought about an opportunity much earlier than either of us was expecting. Several months ago a new opportunity arose for us to serve God on the mission field. “After much prayer and seeking Godly counsel, we realized that taking this opportunity and moving overseas in order to serve is the best option for our family…We are currently preparing to leave the US and begin our new endeavor in July.” Derick and Jill did not disclose the location or duration of their missionary work, but it sounds as though they intend to be out of the country for at least several months. Some fans are speculating that the couple reached its decision in response to news that TLC plans to cancel 19 Kids and Counting View Slideshow: Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard Photos!

Duggar Family Prays For Nation’s "Wicked Ways" in Wake of Gay Marriage Ruling

As you’ve probably heard, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of nationwide gay marriage yesterday in a landmark decision that’s being celebrated in all 50 states. Countless celebrities have spoken out in favor of the SCOTUS decision , and president Obama hailed the ruling as a ” victory for America .” But not all public figures are pleased with yesterday’s developments. Just moments after the decision was announced, members of the famously conservative Duggar family made their feelings known with a Bible quote posted on their official Facebook page: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways,” the message reads. “Then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” While the family has not addressed the court’s ruling directly, the timing and content of the above message leaves little doubt that this is the Duggars’ way of admonishing the justices who voted in favor of gay marriage and chastising the nation for its “wicked” ways. Many of the commenters on the Duggars’ post expressed support for the family and its views, while others accused the 19 Kids and Counting clan of hypocrisy for commenting on the sexual preferences so soon after news of the Josh Duggar molestation scandal  went public. Jana Duggar Speaks Out: My Mom is a Role Model!

Jana Duggar is certainly not the most outspoken member of the 19 Kids and Counting clan, so it’s no great surprise that she has yet to speak out on the Josh Duggar molestation scandal . Like most of her family, Jana has not only refrained from speaking publicly about her brother’s misdeeds, she’s remained completely silent – refusing requests to talk to the media and disappearing from social media altogether. While Jill and Jessa Duggar confirmed that they were molested by Josh in an interview that aired on Fox News, Jana has remained at home, helping to care for her many siblings, as usual. It’s unknown whether or not Jana was victimized by her brother, but there have been rumors that while her younger sisters married and got pregnant, Jana stayed home to protect her siblings from Josh’s abusive behavior.  In accordance with Duggar family courtship rules , Jana isn’t even allowed to have a social media account until she’s engaged, but she occasionally communicates with fans via her family’s official Facebook page. Earlier today Jana posted the above photo of herself and her mother with a caption reading: “Love spending time with this sweet lady. So thankful to have her as a role model, a friend and a mom! Always love my time with her.” While Jana doesn’t directly address the scandal that’s embroiled her entire family, the message seems to be her simple yet significant way of saying that she stands by her mother’s controversial decisions and will continue to support her regardless of public opinion.
