‘Chronicles Of Narnia: Voyage Of The Dawn Treader’ Tops Weekend Box Office

Despite its win, third entry in ‘Narnia’ franchise earned a mere $24.5 million. By Josh Wigler Georgie Henley in “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” Photo: 20th Century Fox Sometimes winning isn’t everything, as evidenced by “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.” Despite securing first place at the box office this weekend, the third entry in the “Chronicles of Narnia” franchise exited the weekend with a mere $24.5 million to its name, hardly scratching the surface of the fantasy film’s reported $155 million production budget. But before “Voyage of the Dawn Treader” can be considered an overall failure, one needs to examine the film’s foreign box-office intake. The movie earned $81 million from international showings, resulting in a worldwide total of $105.5 million. Still not an excellent reward for its opening weekend — and likely not one that can justify continued entries in the “Chronicles of Narnia” series all by itself — but it’s a significantly less shabby result compared to the film’s domestic performance. As a franchise film, “Dawn Treader” may have entered the weekend frame with a bit of an advantage, but that’s hardly a justification for the poor performance of “The Tourist,” the Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp-starring Venice-set thriller that earned a mere $17 million in second place at the box office this weekend. Star power clearly isn’t the problem here, as Jolie and Depp’s names are proven commodities at the box office. But perhaps even their combined weight couldn’t outmatch the overwhelmingly negative reviews lobbed in the film’s direction. Unlike “Chronicles,” foreign numbers won’t save “The Tourist,” as the movie only earned $8 million in international locations this weekend. The rest of the weekend’s top five performers played out predictably. “Tangled” bested “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” once again in a race for third place, while Tony Scott’s “Unstoppable” continued to live up to its name with a fifth-place finish. Major kudos to Darren Aronofsky and Natalie Portman’s “Black Swan,” which secured a $3.3 million sixth-place finish despite playing in only 90 theaters nationwide. Similarly, “The Fighter” bowed in four theaters this weekend and managed the weekend’s best per theater average at $80,000 a pop. The Box-Office Top Five #1 “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” ($24.5 million) #2 “The Tourist” ($17 million) #3 “Tangled” ($14.5 million) #4 “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” ($8.5 million) #5 “Unstoppable” ($3.8 million) Upcoming Releases Disc wars and light cycles are par for the course when “Tron: Legacy” rolls into theaters next weekend, but can Disney’s sci-fi franchise overpower the family-friendly “Yogi Bear” from Warner Bros.? Katy Perry Asks Fans Via Twitter To Help Pick Her Next Single

‘Your voice has been heard! We’re on the same page,’ the singer tweeted over the weekend after fielding requests. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Amy Sussman/ Getty Images With three Teenage Dream tunes already soaring to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, it seems that Katy Perry is planning chart domination once again. The singer took to her Twitter over the weekend to get her fans in on the important decision of which track off her album should be her next single. “PEOPLE u are the reason why I’m here, SO what song off of TEENAGE DREAM do u want to blow up NEXT?!” she tweeted on Sunday. “Put a # next to the song YOU want!” Among the fans who weighed in were some of Perry’s celebrity pals, including Perez Hilton, who made his choice clear when he tweeted , “@katyperry It HAS to be #Peacock! Definitely!!!!” Perry hasn’t divulged the name of the tune she’s chosen, but she did let fans know that there is a clear winner. “Thanks for all your great suggestions for the next single today!” she wrote early Monday morning (December 13). “Your voice has been heard! We’re on the same page…” The single would follow in the footsteps of “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream” and “Firework,” the latter of which just became her latest smash off the release. While no one is sure that Perez’s suggestion of “Peacock” will be the track that’s picked, Perry has talked about the song in the past to MTV News. “With me there are a lot of double entendres,” she said. “There’s a lot of puns. You know, when I learned how to write a song, the person that was kind of teaching me was an amazing songwriter, and he was like, ‘Don’t forget about the double entendres. Don’t forget about the puns. Don’t forget that one word can have two meanings.’ So I’m always kind of looking for that one thing that’s really normal that you can make twisted.” So what song do you think Katy Perry’s next single should be? Selena Gomez Says Fans Inspired A Year Without Rain

Disney star says her supporters ‘deserve the spotlight as much as I do.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Selena Gomez Photo: MTV News Selena Gomez already has a stamp of approval from Taylor Swift for her new album, A Year Without Rain, and now she’s hoping her fans are equally delighted with the record, which dropped Tuesday (September 21). In fact, she had her fans in mind for every decision and detail in the album process. “[I named the album after my single] because it’s the name of the first song I recorded to put on the record. I feel like that song has a lot of meaning, and it also kind of was the start of what I wanted to base all the other songs around,” she told MTV News. “I mean, even down from putting the track listing and numbering it, I wanted to make sure I envisioned [fans] putting it in their car or putting it on their iPod and how I wanted them to listen to the record.” Many of the songs on A Year Without Rain are inspired by Selena’s dedicated fans. “I wanted to make sure it made people feel good, but I also dedicated a couple songs to my fans, because there were moments onstage that I wish I could give to them, because they mean so much to me,” she explained. “So there are songs like ‘Intuition’ and ‘Spotlight’ that are specifically for my fans and a way of saying, ‘I get to live such a great life, but you guys deserve the spotlight as much as I do.’ ” Gomez said the album can be enjoyed at home or on the dance floor. “I think you can see that it’s more of a dance/techno vibe,” she said. “I wanted it to be a feel-good record.” Are you excited to get your hands on Selena’s new music? Justin Bieber Sings For Fans At Hooters In Canada

Singer makes a surprise appearance at a mall in Edmonton. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber (file) Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Justin Bieber is living the life. The 16-year-old superstar was spotted and photographed with a bevy of Hooters waitresses after he stopped by the restaurant’s local outpost at the West Edmonton Mall in Canada on Saturday, the Edmonton Sun reports. He was in town for a stop on his My World tour . Not only did Bieber and his entourage, including four of his backup dancers, stop by for a quick visit, he also serenaded everyone at the restaurant. One of the servers at the restaurant, Tania Biggar, explained, “We were talking about deep-fried pickles. Then they said they would sing to me for free deep-fried pickles. The manager said if they sang for the whole restaurant, he’d pay for their entire meal. They serenaded the girls. They were actually super-polite. They were just awesome people to serve. They weren’t demanding or anything like that.” The impromptu performance had fans in a frenzy. “Everybody that was sitting around them went over to talk to them. They told them they did an awesome job of singing,” she said. Biggar further explained that while the Hooters girls did get a photo with Bieber, they didn’t get much one-on-one time with him. “None of the [servers] really got to talk to him. He was surrounded by his fans,” she said. “That’s how we knew he was coming in — it was all 14-year-old girls. And they all kind of move as one.” YouTube footage of the Hooters visit shows Bieber, dressed in a black jacket and black hat, walking through crowds of people. Despite all the fans trying to catch a glimpse of the star, it seems things remained relatively more low-key than past Bieber mall appearances . The restaurant’s manager, Sonny Verma, confirmed the blink-and-you’ll-miss-him appearance of the “U Smile” singer to the Edmonton Journal . “We probably had a row six people deep and 10 people long at the window. It was pretty cool,” he said. “I was told about 10, 15 minutes he came in here. It was really quick. He came in, took a quick picture and took off.” Related Artists Justin Bieber

Drake Says Rat Pack Inspired VMA Performance

‘I wanted to get up there and look fly,’ he tells MTV News. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — You know you’ve made it when the chorus from your song is quoted on “SportsCenter.” You know you’ve made it tenfold when you have a highly anticipated slot at the MTV Video Music Awards . Drake has both, with “you fancy, huh?” permeating pop culture, and on Sunday, you’ll see him team up on the big stage with Swizz Beatz and a very special guest, Mary J. Blige, for his debut VMA performance. “All I remember is that VMAs in Vegas, in the hotel,” Drake said Friday afternoon (September 10) in his dressing room at the Nokia Theatre. He had just finished rehearsing for a couple of hours. “I remember being at home … seeing Tyga perform with Wayne, and I was like, ‘Man, I gotta get my ball rolling. I gotta be there one day.’ It’s surreal, being on that stage.” And yes, Drizzy will be surrounded by several beautiful ladies and one lovely Queen. “Fancy” was originally slated to be a Mary record , before eventually making its way to Thank Me Later. Drake and the song’s producer, Swizz Beatz, decided to keep her vocals on the hook of the song. “Her vocals are what make it so sweet,” Drake beamed of having MJB perform with him. “What’s more classy, more fancy than Mary J. Blige? I’m not sure. She is the epitome of class, in my opinion. It’s more of a real theater production than it is a performance. It’s really a lot of acting.” If rehearsals are any indication, Drake’s performance will be reminiscent of the up-to-date Sinatra cool in his VMA promo spot . “I watched the Rat Pack live at the Copa Room,” Drake recalled. “It was just so relaxed. They were smoking cigarettes and drinking Jack. It was women everywhere. It wasn’t, ‘Let’s just rap and be epic and be huge.’ They were like, ‘I really run this. Me and Sammy and Dean.’ I wanted to get up there and look fly.” Are you looking forward to Drake’s VMA performance? Let us know in the comments! Lady Gaga Thanks Fans For Twitter Crown

The singer shouts out her fans for making her the most-followed tweeter. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lady Gaga Photo: Derek Storm/ Splash News Lady Gaga’s millions of fans have another title to call their Mother Monster: Queen of Twitter. After steadily gaining on Britney Spears, who until recently was the most-followed user on the social-networking site, Gaga surpassed her fellow pop supernova over the weekend by landing over 5.7 million followers. At press time, Gaga’s Twitter army clocked in at 5,726,168 deep, besting Brit, who had 5,696,275 followers. Just days ago, the chart-toppers were neck-and-neck, with Spears boasting 5,646,028 Twitter peeps to Gaga’s 5,635,460. When Gaga learned she had dethroned Spears, she took to the Internet to thank the people who made it all possible: her fans. In a video posted online, Gaga doles out heaps of “monster” love to her followers for solidifying her digital dominance. Sporting a lace headpiece adorned with a sequined Twitter logo and an ornamental Gaga-fied version of the site’s familiar bird symbol, the singer addressed her nearly 6 million followers. “Hello world, this is Lady Gaga, queen of Twitter,” said the singer, with a flourish of an illuminated scepter and a sprinkle of glitter; a move that was part-Elizabethan royalty and part-Glinda the Good Witch. “I wanted to thank all my beautiful little monsters for following me. Thank you for beginning my reign as Twitter queen.” The singer then wished her Twitter-dom only the most enjoyable of experiences when logging onto the micro-blogging site. “May you always have soft cuticles while tweeting,” Gaga said wistfully. “May you never have carpal tunnel.” The “Alejandro” singer, who filmed the clip backstage at her Monster Ball Tour stop in Tacoma, Washington, promised to keep the Twitter nonsense to a minimum. “I vow never to partake in celebrity online shenanigans,” Gaga said. “And I vow to always tweet and tweet again.” Before signing off, Gaga left her legions of viral fans with a few words of encouragement. “Just remember that I love you,” Gaga said. “And love you yourself. Because little monsters, you were born that way, baby. I love you Twitter. See you at the Monster Ball.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga Britney Spears
