Lady Gaga Writhes Around In The Rain For ‘Today’ Show

Gaga performs a jazz standard, hits and her newest tune, ‘You and I,’ in Rockefeller Center. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga performs on the “Today” show Friday Photo: Jemal Countess/Getty Images According to the hosts of the “Today” show, 18,000 to 20,000 people showed up to see Lady Gaga perform on Friday morning (July 9). And even after waiting for hours in the heat, which was finally relieved by rain during the set, the crowd didn’t seem disappointed by what their Mother Monster brought them. Gaga jazzed up Rockefeller Plaza in a sequined, all-white suit and a bra complete with sparkly crosses. She began her set with the standard “Someone to Watch Over Me,” and though she was accompanied by a full band, backup singers and dancers, the cover still displayed Gaga’s vocal abilities. She then seamlessly segued into “Bad Romance.” Sitting at her piano, Gaga said told Meredith Viera hasn’t gotten accustomed to being famous yet. “I haven’t [gotten used to it], but I love and cherish my fans so much,” she said. “I just want to say a big thank you to all of the television and radio and the underground clubs and the gay community for supporting me for the past three years. … There’s certainly things that are difficult to deal with, but the kind of fame that I cherish is the relationship I have with my fans.” When introducing her newest song, she explained the inspiration behind it. ” ‘You and I’ was written about the most important person that I’ve ever met and all my friends downtown, Lady Starlight and Brian, who’s here today playing trumpet, and all my friends, they’re so wonderful.” And though the song is more lo-fi than many of her tunes, she kept it Gaga by donning a pair of disco-ball sunglasses. After the commercial break, Gaga came out wearing a black suit and bra to sing her latest hit, “Alejandro.” In the middle of the song, she asked the crowd to “put their hands up for your gay pride.” She later shouted, “Hands up, little monsters. I love New York.” In the pouring rain, completely soaked, Gaga told the skies to “let it rain” as she belted out the last few notes of her song “Teeth.” She then crossed herself and took a bow with her backup dancers by her side. And with that Gaga ended her epic “Today Show” performance. In the hours leading up to her appearance, Gaga tweeted a message to the fans who camped out before the show. “My little monster sweeties are already camped outside today show!” she wrote. “I love u! Will be sending u pizza and water all day! And a surprise 2moro! Thousands of precious lil monsters are sleeping in street outside Today Show. May NY watchover u, + may u sleep smiling under the stars. Amen.” Did you catch Gaga on “Today”? What did you think of her performance? Tell us in the comments! Yelawolf Becomes ‘Hottest Breakthrough MCs Of 2010’ Contender With Big Boi’s Help

Fans decide our ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010’ — vote now! The winner will be revealed on July 25. By Shaheem Reid Yelawolf Photo: Interscope “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” Candidate: Yelawolf Yelawolf just had a show in his hometown of Gadsden, Alabama, and was so moved by what he saw, he was at a loss for words. Luckily, he had rhymes instead. “You had these white boys with these big-ass trucks with mud all over them,” he recalled. “D-boys from the North Side projects rolling up on dunks. You had dune buggies, bikes. It was everything I’ve been saying coming to form.” Wolf has been toiling underground for years, signing with legendary record exec Kawan “KP” Prather in 2007. He went through getting dropped by Sony Records and being snubbed by Def Jam only to heat up so large, Interscope Records picked him up earlier this year. Wolf’s energetic live shows and his performance style — which fuses hip-hop and rock — set him apart. Of late, he’s gotten a major co-sign from Big Boi, appearing on the Andre 3000-produced Sir Lucious Left Foot track “You Ain’t No DJ.” “That was actually my debut feature on a distributed project with a major artist,” said Wolf, who has been on independent projects for Juelz Santana and Slim Thug. “That sh– is jamming. As soon as I found out, I was rubbing my hands together as to when I could work with Outkast. I’ve been with KP since ’07, waiting on that moment.” On his upcoming debut, Trunk Muzik: 0-60, Yela got a chance to work with another ATL superstar: Gucci Mane. “I wanted to take advantage of the moment,” he explained of working with Gucci on the yet-untitled track. “I was like, ‘Let’s go do an intro together. Let’s go intro this bitch and vibe out like MCs. Let’s do this bitch.’ That’s what we did. Gucci’s rock and roll, balls-to-the-wall hip-hop. Straight Southern b-boy rap sh–. I’ve always been a fan of Gucci’s style. I was a huge Crunchy Black fan. Even like the Nutcracker from Group Home, Shawty Lo. Very broken-down, simple rap style. I was excited to have him. It made the record. The record was already crazy; he just took it to that next level.” Wolf’s Trunk Muzik: 0-60 is an enhancement of his mixtape Trunk Muzik. “We picked the 0-60 title because, for one, we didn’t want to alienate any of the new fans we were making,” he described. “We felt it was too soon to step outside of anywhere we were. With Trunk Muzik, we created a sound and feeling we didn’t want to move from. We called it Trunk Muzik: 0-60 because it represents how fast we been moving since we been doing these shows and got a deal with Interscope. Everything is moving. We wanted to mirror that with the music. Picking five of the fan favorites from Trunk Muzik and putting on seven new ones. “I’m never scared what people are gonna think about music that I make,” Yela added. “I just go in there and make music that sounds good to me. And it sounds good to my crew. I just trust my crew. If it leaves the studio and we’re happy with it, that’s what matters the most to us. Because if we’re happy with it, then I can perform it. As long as I can perform that record, I can translate the energy I need to get somebody to understand it. I’ve worked so hard to get to this moment. I’m just soaking it up, taking it day by day, trying not to let it go to my head. I just love my fans and the fans I’m making. My fans are like no other. Completely original people.” Yelawolf and 19 other up-and-coming MCs are in the running to become MTV News’ “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” — and the winner will be decided by you! Nikki Reed Was ‘Intimidated’ By Rosalie’s Backstory In ‘Eclipse’

‘I know that the fans have expectations,’ she tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Nikki Reed Photo: Damian Vaca/ MTV News “Twilight” was all about Bella and Edward. Then in “New Moon,” Jacob really stepped it up. While “Eclipse” definitely focuses on the love triangle, fans also get to learn a bit more about their friends and family. When Nikki Reed had to shoot Rosalie’s backstory, her biggest moment yet in “The Twilight Saga,” she was feeling the pressure. “I was torn, because I was definitely looking forward to it. I mean, I read the first three books before we began filming ‘Twilight,’ so I knew what I had in store if we made all three movies,” she told MTV News about going back in time and showing the fans Rosalie’s story. “But I was obviously very intimidated, and I felt a little insecure, and I was nervous, and maybe I should not be saying all these things, but I was.” For those unfamiliar with the “Twilight” series ( spoiler alert! ), when she was a human, Rosalie was attacked by a group of men, including her fianc

All Time Low Recall ‘Gagging’ During ‘Silent Library’ Stunt

Pop/punk band’s episode airs tonight at 5 p.m. ET on MTV. By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by Matt Harper All Time Low appear on “Silent Library” on June 29 Photo: MTV MTV’s “Silent Library” has made a name for itself by putting people (some famous, others not) in high-pressure (and usually extremely wacky) situations to test their ability to keep their reactions quiet. Such stunts include the “Milk Man” (which saw a male contestant try to survive an attack by a breast pump), “Not Happy Hour” (a game where five contestants have to consume a disgusting scorpion bowl in 30 seconds) and the surreal “Sad Bee” (wherein an old man wearing a bee costume shocks a contestant with a taser). Baltimore pop/punk band All Time Low are no strangers to wackiness, which is why they made for an excellent foil on the show; their episode airs Tuesday (June 29) at 5 p.m. ET on MTV. According to the band, the show is still up to its old tricks. “We all threw up, and it was awful,” All Time Low frontman Alex Gaskarth told MTV News during the penultimate stop on the Bamboozle Roadshow in Philadelphia. The group was subject to a stunt called “The Unexpected Mexican,” which saw bandmembers Gaskarth and Rian Dawson attempt to eat nachos with some rather eclectic toppings. “It was hot mustard, tartar sauce and wasabi paste,” Gaskarth said. “And it was just covered. None of those sauces are even good. I started gagging the first bite.” “I think they thought, ‘All Time Low is a bunch of jokesters, so we’ll give them everything that is sinful and wrong,’ ” Dawson said. “I threw up, and I was just watching them,” guitarist Jack Barakat added. All Time Low ended up on the show at least partially because of a Twitter campaign staged by their fans. “Apparently, our fans like to see us suffer,” Gaskarth joked. “But it was fun. We had a good time.” “Silent Library” is coming off its hottest season yet. The second batch of episodes featured stars like Justin Bieber, Jim Jones, Asher Roth, Aubrey O’Day and members of We the Kings and Forever the Sickest Kids. In addition to the members of All Time Low,the third season will feature guest appearances from members of bands like NeverShoutNever, Hey Monday, Honor Society and Anarbor. All Time Low’s episode of “Silent Library” airs Tuesday (June 29) at 5 p.m. ET on MTV. Related Videos Silent Library | Season 3 | Behind the Scenes with All Time Low Related Artists All Time Low

T.I. Heading Into The Studio With Timbaland, Swizz Beatz

‘We got a few big, big, big sessions coming up next week,’ Tip tells MTV News. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Kelly Marino T.I. Photo: MTV News T.I. is set to unleash his new album King Uncaged later this summer, and the big homie is making sure that he brings the heat with his latest effort. He’s already revealed that he’s been in the studio with Lady Gaga, Kid Rock and Eminem , but the King of the South recently told MTV News that he’s crafting additional tunes with some hitmakers. “We got a few big, big, big sessions coming up next week: Timbaland, Swizz Beatz,” T.I. told MTV News on Saturday. “I’m trying to show up and show out every time.” Tip also gave a progress update on the album. While he’s got dozens of tracks already in the can, he’s looking to make his new songs better than ever. “The album is coming along nicely. I’ve recorded about 85, 90 songs, and I’m still trying to top those records.” Earlier this year Swizz told MTV News that he was looking forward to working with T.I., but that he had to check out Tip’s post-jail mindset before getting started on new music for him. “His mind and his thought pattern before he went [to jail] is gonna be different from when he gets out,” Swizzy said. “That man has been in the penitentiary at a time that was the height of his career — he might come out and not wanna use curses no more. He might come out and use more curses. I don’t know. I can’t create the sound for Tip that’s based on ‘Swing Ya Rag’ and ‘Bring Em Out’ and all these things we’ve done unless it’s his plan. He’s gotta come out, [I] sit down with him, chill how we chill.” Who would you love to see collaborate with T.I.? Share your ideas in the comments. Related Artists T.I.

Lil Wayne Personally Thanks Nearly 100 Fans On Blog

Incarcerated Young Money boss expresses gratitude to followers for their thoughts, gifts, prayers on WeezyThanxYou.com. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Lil Wayne posted the third letter to his fans on his website, WeezyThanxYou.com on Monday (June 28). The post follows Weezy’s Mother’s Day letter written last month and and initial note in April written when he first launched the site from prison to communicate with fans. In the new message, Wayne writes that he hopes his fans are enjoying their summer and profusely thanked everyone for their support, from the pictures he’s received to all the letters sent to him at the Eric M. Taylor detention center at New York’s Rikers Island. The rapper only gave a short update about his life behind bars, saying he was doing well. “On my end, I’m alive, breathing and blessed,” Wayne wrote. “You already know how I’m passing time — reading and working out.” The Young Money boss also gave a shout-out to his artists and said the collective had made him proud the night before, as both Drake and Nicki Minaj scored hardware Sunday night at the 2010 BET Awards . Wayne then went on to personally thank nearly 100 supporters who’ve written him letters of encouragement, responding to individuals, including Karla Moy, who runs Drake’s official fan website and Vanessa Satten, the editor of XXL magazine. “First, I thank you for your thoughts and prayers,” he wrote to followers Ashley and Lil Mackenzie. “I would also like you to know that your letter touched my heart. I wasn’t able to keep the wristbands but thank you anyway. Gudda and I send our deepest love to you and Lil Mack.” “Cool middle name,” Wayne told Kyle Rockin McLaughlin. “And I’ll be in W. Palm one day. Hope you’re there.” The rapper is almost halfway through his prison term and appears to be ready to get back to his career, as he told Satten he hopes to grace the cover of the magazine again soon; earlier this month the Cash Money Records superstar recorded a verse from prison for a remix of Drake’s “Light Up.” “Thank you for the love and I can’t wait to be on the cover again,” Wayne wrote. Michael Jackson Fans Pay Tribute Outside Forest Lawn Cemetery

‘He was like my brother, a family member,’ one fan says. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Kelly Marino Forest Lawn Memorial Parks and Mortuaries in Glendale, California Photo: Getty Images Michael Jackson was laid to rest at Forest Lawn cemetery September 3. Nine months later, on the one-year anniversary of his death, fans gathered outside the Los Angeles cemetery Friday (June 25) to pay tribute to the fallen pop star and to share recollections of their favorite MJ moments from a career that spanned five decades. “My first memory, I was about 7 years old. This was the time when Bad came out, and I watched the video performance of it, and from that point, I was almost obsessed with him,” Eboni Butler told MTV News. “I even have him tattooed on my leg.” Tallora DiGirolami flew in from Adelaide, Australia, for the occasion and proudly displayed her national flag as she stood outside Forest Lawn. “I started this flag because I had so many friends and fans that couldn’t make it,” she said. “And we started getting to talking and I said, ‘Right, I’ve got a flag. Do you want to sign it? Do you want to be part of the memorial?’ ” The crowd was smaller than the ones that gathered in the days and weeks following Jackson’s death, but the sentiments of his fans were no less impassioned. “He means a lot to me,” Brian Lopez said. “He was like my brother, a family member. When I heard he died, I didn’t eat for weeks, I didn’t sleep for weeks, I didn’t go out for weeks. … It’s been a very sad loss for me.” Confronted with such a loss, his fans continued to recall memories of the King of Pop. “I saw Michael once in Memphis when he was married to Lisa Marie and they had the Elvis tribute,” Sheila Guerrero recalled. “I was crying so bad. He just stopped and came back and told me not to cry. That moment is priceless for me. I thank God for that moment.” Said Jonah Sevilla: “He loved the world, and he wanted it to be a better place because of all the bad things that were happening.” MTV will be remembering the life and music of Michael Jackson all weekend. Don’t miss the one-hour special “Michael Jackson’s Influence on Music,” airing tonight at 6:30 p.m. on MTV. Ludacris Says Nicki Minaj And Lil’ Kim Should Make A Record Together

Luda insists that a Minaj-Kim collabo would ‘kill the entire industry.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Ludacris Photo: MTV News What’s a good way for Lil’ Kim and Nicki Minaj to resolve their issues ? Do a collabo, says Ludacris. If the two rap divas put their bewigged heads together and traded rhymes on a song, Luda thinks minds would blown by the resulting track. “I think if Lil’ Kim and Nicki Minaj do a record together it’s gonna kill the entire industry,” Luda told MTV News. He added that the two femcees should take advantage of the lack of high-profile ladies in the game right now: “You don’t have that many women in the industry so the lane is wide open.” The ATL rapper insisted that the two should work on music not only for themselves, but for their fans as well. “The fact that we have females out there that’s going back and forth — and I’m not saying it’s either one’s fault — I feel like y’all need to come together and squash all this bulls— and make records together,” Luda said. “Because [there’s] a lot of women that wanna hear what the hell y’all got to say.” Other MCs have weighed in on the controversy as well. Miami hip-hop queen Trina said the Minaj and Kim drama reflects on all femcees. “This makes us all look bad. There’s barely any female artists as is — we don’t need this,” Trina told MTV News. 50 Cent said that Kim should calm down with the swagger-jacking accusations because there is a lack of female hip-hop artists for Minaj to be inspired by. “It’s obvious … she was inspired by some of Kim’s [style]. But that’s not bad. There’s not a whole lot of female artists that you can make reference to, so you’ll see those little influences even stronger,” 50 said in an interview with Power 98.3 FM in Phoenix. Hip-hop vet Rah Digga also said the stars should keep it about the music. “My advice to everybody is just do you,” Digga told MTV. “Make your music, don’t pay attention to what’s going on around you, just do what you do best and let the fans blog it out.” Do you think Nicki Minaj and Lil’ Kim should collaborate on a song?
