‘The Other Guys’ Captures Audiences At Weekend Box Office

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg’s new comedy took first place from Christopher Nolan’s ‘Inception.’ By Josh Wigler Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in “The Other Guys” Photo: Sony Pictures The Box-Office Top Five #1 “The Other Guys” ($35.6 million) #2 “Inception” ($18.6 million) #3 “Step Up 3-D” ($15.5 million) #4 “Salt” ($11.1 million) #5 “Dinner for Schmucks” ($10.5 million) The dream is over, as Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” is no longer the reigning champion at the weekend domestic box office — that distinction now belongs to “The Other Guys.” Starring an A-List crew of comedians and action stars including Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, “The Other Guys” easily took first place in its first weekend in theaters with a $35.6 million debut, marking yet another successful endeavor from frequent collaborators Ferrell and director Adam McKay. Additionally, the strong debut for “The Other Guys” demonstrates that both Ferrell and Wahlberg still have major box-office appeal, a notion that was somewhat questionable after the disappointing performances of Ferrell’s most recent “Land of the Lost” and Wahlberg’s “Max Payne.” Despite slipping from the top spot for the first time since its debut, the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring “Inception” remained a strong contender at the box office this weekend, settling for second place with $18.6 million. The high-concept action flick has amassed $227.7 million at the domestic box office since opening four weeks ago. “Step Up 3D” entered the weekend competition with plenty of fanfare but only danced up an estimated $15.5 million bronze medal by Sunday’s end. It’s the weakest debut for any of the “Step Up” films to date, but not by too large of a margin. Fourth and fifth place belonged to the Angelina Jolie-starring “Salt” and comedy flick “Dinner for Schmucks” with $11.1 million and $10.5 million, respectively. Upcoming Releases Rock music, romance and video game references collide when comic book adaptation “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” arrives in theaters next weekend alongside Sylvester Stallone’s action extravaganza, “The Expendables.” The two geek-baiting films debut against the considerably less violent “Eat Pray Love,” starring Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem. ‘The Other Guys’: The Reviews Are In!

Check out what critics have to say before you head out to the theater this weekend. By Eric Ditzian and Jeremy Kaplan Will Ferrell, Steve Coogan and Mark Wahlberg in “The Other Guys” Photo: Sony Pictures Leonardo DiCaprio’s fevered dreams have dominated the multiplex for three straight weeks. Now it looks like the “Inception” supremacy is coming to an end, with Leo’s reveries soon to be overtaken by Will Ferrell’s wackiness. The curly-haired comedian stars in “The Other Guys,” an action-comedy that marks his fourth big screen collaboration with writer/director Adam McKay, following “Anchorman,” “Talladega Nights” and “Step Brothers.” Co-starring Mark Wahlberg as Ferrell’s reluctant NYPD partner and fellow desk-jockey, “Other Guys” could easily outdo the $30 million “Step Brothers” took in back in 2008. Helping in that quest are the flick’s strong critical reviews. Before you head to the cinema this weekend, check out what the critics have to say. The Story “This latest gambit stars Ferrell as Det. Allen Gamble, a NYPD forensic accountant, and Mark Wahlberg as his rogue cop partner, a reluctant and raging Terry Hoitz. These flat-footed flatfoots get lots of razzing from the other boys in blue, but in typical don’t-count-Ferrell’s-underachievers-out fashion, they just might derail a $32-billion stock market rip-off if they can follow the paper trail and stop bickering long enough to figure it out.” — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times The Cast “Mr. Ferrell’s Allen is a genuinely sweet guy as well as a crazed one: As evidence, his time-out for a surreal folk ballad, along with his mad reminiscence about being a pimp in college. (Jon Brion did the music, which includes the lullaby ‘Pimps Don’t Cry.’) Mr. Wahlberg provides counterpoint to his co-star’s nuances by declaiming his lines at the top of his voice: here again, the results can be hilarious when they aren’t silly. Michael Keaton is a police captain who moonlights at Bed Bath & Beyond. Steve Coogan, a reliably funny actor, isn’t funny as a bad guy scheming to defraud the city. He seems to think he’s in a drama.” — Joe Morgenstern, The Wall Street Journal The Jokes ” ‘The Other Guys’ gets you chuckling at the little details of Allen’s stick-up-the-butt patheticness, like the way he hums while typing, or argues with Terry about how a school of tuna could whip a lion, or blasts Little River Band CDs in his sad, dinky red Prius. (Terry: ‘I feel like we’re literally driving around in a vagina.’) A few of the jokes are sly, many are quite obvious, but what knits the laughs together is the nearly confessional conviction with which Ferrell delivers them. He’s not playing just another geek idiot — as, say, Rob Schneider does. He digs into some elemental side of himself, a side that craves order and niceness and civility, that shrinks from danger and violence.” — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly The Buddy Cop Genre “Adam McKay and co-writer Chris Henchy (‘Land of the Lost’) have overloaded the narrative, stretching it 20 minutes beyond its practical use and mistaking bigger and more explosive with funnier. From ‘Freebie and the Bean’ to ‘Running Scared’ to the ‘Lethal Weapon’ franchise, the challenge with cop-centric action comedies has remained essentially the same: How to balance straightforward adrenaline-rush material with bits you’d never find in a real cop film? This one begins buckling under its own weight around the midpoint; on the other hand, I’m already looking forward to catching certain asides and riffs again on cable.” — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune The Final Word ” ‘The Other Guys’ is that rare thing, a goofball summer buddy comedy that actually delivers. The movie is a return to form for Will Ferrell, who finally reins in the idiot frenzy he’s so often deployed in the past (most recently in last year’s dismal ‘Land of the Lost’) and — an added blessing — shows no skin, either. It’s also a breakthrough for Mark Wahlberg, who dipped a toe into the comedy waters of ‘Date Night,’ but here makes a sizeable splash. Wahlberg isn’t an all-out clown in the Ferrell style, but his careful restraint in this picture — his comic simmering and his lag-timed reactions — is just as funny in a different way.’ — Kurt Loder, MTV News Check out everything we’ve got on “The Other Guys.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . The Other Guys Movie Premiere: Red Carpet Photos

With the clear exception of Inception , it’s been the summer of comedies. Few dramas have made a dent in the box office, while more light-hearted films such as Toy Story 3 , Despicable Me and Dinner with Schmucks have fared very well. That trend will likely continue this weekend, as The Other Guys hits theaters nationwide. It features Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell as mismatched police partners – which is really all you need to know, isn’t it? The cast came out last night for the movie’s Hollywood premiere, as Wahlberg and Ferrell pose below with co-star Eva Mendes. Yes, she’s also in the flick, making it humorous and also very, very attractive…

‘Jersey Shore’ Stars Pauly D And Vinny Are ‘Twilight’ Fans

Pauly says getting love from celebs like Will Ferrell and Charlize Theron ‘blows my mind.’ By Josh Wigler Pauly D Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images Although the stars of “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” walked away from the 2010 MTV Movie Awards with five Golden Popcorn statues to their names, they weren’t the only ones feeling victorious. The castmembers of “Jersey Shore” were fist-pumping their way up and down the red carpet at the awards show as well. But for any fans hoping for a “Twilight” vs. “Jersey Shore” showdown, you’re in for a bit of a disappointment. Speaking with MTV News, “Pauly D” DelVecchio and Vinny Guadagnino revealed that they have nothing but respect for Team Edward, Team Jacob and everyone in between. “I’m a fan of them,” said Pauly D, while Vinny added: “I wish everybody success. We’re both doing our thing right now, and we’re both guests at the MTV Movie Awards. Can’t ask for anything more than that, you know?” Indeed, Pauly D and Vinny seemed more than content to simply attend the MTV Movie Awards. The pair talked about how surreal it was to be surrounded by so many celebrities — particularly the ones who actually recognize the “Jersey Shore” crew. “It blows my mind,” Pauly said. “I heard Will Ferrell, he said my name last night in a video [with] Mark Wahlberg, like, ‘Who do you know from the “Jersey Shore”?’ They’re like, ‘Pauly D.’ That’s crazy to me!” But Pauly’s reputation with Ferrell and Wahlberg paled in comparison to the news that Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron is a fan of Pauly’s and the show . “Sick! See what I’m saying? That’s what’s up,” Pauly laughed. “That’s crazy! I love that. I like that. Tell her I said, ‘What’s up’!” Relive the wildest, funniest and most-jaw-dropping moments of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, watch revealing red-carpet interviews and get exclusive movie clips after the show at MovieAwards.MTV.com . Will Ferrell And Mark Wahlberg Get Their GTL On For MTV Movie Awards

‘Hitting the gym, getting tanned, doing some laundry,’ the ‘Other Guys’ co-stars say of their pre-show routine. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Josh Horowitz, Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell Photo: MTV News You never know what you’re going to get when you put Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in front of a camera. Well, that’s not entirely true. You know it’s going to be R-rated, generally insane and utterly hilarious. And therein lies the charming genius of these two, who star in this summer’s action/comedy “The Other Guys.” Ferrell and Wahlberg were on hand Thursday afternoon (June 3) at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California, for a rehearsal of their top-secret shenanigans at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards . Afterward, they stopped by for a chat with MTV News, and things got weird fast. To begin, Wahlberg announced his presence with a furious series of curses that was both out-of-nowhere and infectious, as Ferrell quickly joined in the barrage of swears far too child-unfriendly to reprint here. The tone for the rest of the interview was set. Talk (you might call it smack talk, in fact) ranged from their favorite “Jersey Shore” castmembers to their irrepressible love of Zac Efron. Don’t ask us — we’re as confused as anyone. But damn, we’re pretty amused too. Take their training regime to prepare for their Movie Awards appearance: “Hitting the gym, getting tanned, doing some laundry,” Wahlberg said. “I just gave Mark a ride home in my helicopter,” Ferrell added. “We do 15 rounds on the heavy bag and then HGH.” “And then we watch Zac Efron,” Wahlberg finished. Whatever you guys say. Lucky for both of them, Efron will be in the house at Sunday night’s show. He’ll be one of the night’s presenters, along with Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Jessica Biel, Steve Carell, Vanessa Hudgens, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Adam Sandler and Chris Rock. Fan voting is currently under way at MovieAwards.MTV.com and will stay open through Saturday. Voting for Best Movie, however, will stay open throughout the awards show itself, which means you’ll have a chance to affect the night’s biggest prize until the very last minute. Don’t miss the live red-carpet coverage, exclusive movie clips and fist-pumping action on MTV News’ “Jersey Shore Blow-Out at the MTV Movie Awards,” airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday, June 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Then stay tuned for the 2010 MTV Movie Awards at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Related Videos Get Ready For The 2010 MTV Movie Awards!

The Other Guys Trailer: Cop Out, But with Jokes

Stop me if this seems familiar: There’s a new cop comedy coming out that pairs a loose-cannon SNL veteran with a growling, resentful partner in a semi-sendup of the 80’s buddy comedy genre. Here’s the difference, though, between Cop Out and Adam McKay’s new Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg starrer The Other Guys : I actually laughed at the Other Guys trailer.
