Injured Madina Lake Bassist Is In ‘Tenuous Situation,’ Brother Says

‘Honestly it’s like walking on glass,’ Nathan Leone says of brother Matthew, who was seriously injured in assault. By James Montgomery Matthew Leone Photo: Steve Thorne/ Getty Images More than a week after he was badly beaten and left unconscious on the streets of Chicago, Madina Lake bassist Matthew Leone has been discharged from the hospital and is resting at his brother — and Madina Lake frontman — Nathan’s apartment. But obviously, he’s still far from a complete recovery from the attack — which happened after he attempted to intervene in a domestic dispute and left him with a broken nose and jaw, a fractured skull, and hemorrhaging so severe on his brain that doctors were forced to remove a third of his skull. And now, with a second surgery scheduled for July 16, the responsibility of keeping him stable now largely rests on Nathan Leone’s shoulders. And, as Nathan told MTV News on Wednesday (July 7), things are still very much touch-and-go. “Honestly it’s like walking on glass, because I have to make sure absolutely nothing happens to him, have to keep him safe and protected and healing, and then, there’s the brain surgery, with all the risks of that,” Nathan said. “It’s a very tenuous situation. He can’t roll over, can’t really rest the side of his head on anything, and he can’t get up and walk around, even though he very much wants to. He spends most of the day right in the middle of my bed, so he can’t roll off at night. I’ve been sleeping on the couch.” Leone said that Matthew is awake, aware and speaking — “It’s not anything profound,” he chuckled — and that right now, the main focus is just making sure he remains comfortable and safe until his surgery, at which point, doctors will attempt to re-attach the portion of his skull they removed. “He’s slowly but surely getting his strength back, but it’s still hard, because not only is his surgery upcoming, but any time you have a neurological trauma, the long-term effects are unknown, and can be for up to a year,” Nathan said. “So, right now, it’s a situation where we have all this time until the surgery, and you’re holding your breath that everything is stable until then. Then you need that surgery to go perfectly, and from there it’s another four to six weeks of recovery. So hopefully everything goes as well as can possible.” In the mean time, there’s still the matter of the pending case against Matthew’s alleged attacker, 33-year-old Justin Pivec , which Nathan can’t talk about for legal reasons (“You have no idea how badly I want to say something,” he sighed), and the ongoing efforts by Madina Lake’s management to raise funds to help with Matthew’s mounting medical costs — efforts which have left Nathan amazed and his brother more than a little embarrassed. “In some ways he’s a shy person, and the attention that’s come from this is something he’s not ecstatic about, but at the same time, it’s just overwhelmingly positive, and of course it makes him feel much better,” Nathan said. “Everyone’s been so amazingly supportive, really, I can’t express what it means to all of us.” And though all of this has obviously taken up the majority of his focus, Nathan said that he and his Madina Lake bandmates met on Tuesday night to discuss just how Matthew’s injuries will affect the future of their band. And, from the sound of things, they’re planning to push on with Matthew at their side, as much as possible. “We have the Sonisphere Festival coming up in UK, and we scheduled a few headlining dates around that, and we decided last night that we’re going to commit to playing them, and we’re not going to hire a bass player to fill in,” Nathan said. “Instead, if it’s possible, we’re going to try to have Matthew record his bass tracks here, and then run them when we play live. We’re not going to hire a new bass player [for the shows] … we don’t want anyone to take his place. So, if he can pick up a bass, he’s going to play his parts.” Share your get-well wishes for Matthew Leone in the comments below. Related Artists Madina Lake

Mary J. Blige Gives Command Performance At Essence Music Festival

Singer whips crowd into frenzy with classics like ‘Real Love,’ ‘I’m Going Down,’ as Alicia Keys stumbles during near-flawless show. By Shaheem Reid Mary J. Blige performs at the 2010 Essence Music Festival Photo: Taylor Hill/ FilmMagic The 16th annual Essence Music Festival ended in triumph in the early hours of Monday morning, as Earth Wind & Fire closed out the weekend with hits like “September” and “Reasons.” For several days, Essence magazine — celebrating its 40th anniversary this year — and its 20-plus sponsors, including Coca-Cola, Olay and Ford, drove home messages of empowerment, self-esteem and self-awareness. By day, thousands hit New Orleans’ Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, where dozens of companies had set up booths and where acts like Keith Sweat and El DeBarge performed. Those passing through the convention center were also treated to good old celebrity sightings like T.I. and comedian/author Steve Harvey, who led relationship talks. At night, of course, it was all about the music at the Louisiana Superdome. Trey Songz, Estelle, Kid ‘N Play, Doug E. Fresh, LL Cool J, Jill Scott, Joe, Gladys Knight and Keri Hilson were among dozens of performers who opened both on the main stage and the smaller lounge stages. And the headliners were big guns: Janet Jackson kicked things off Friday, Saturday belonged to Alicia Keys and on Sunday night, though Earth Wind & Fire were last on the lineup, it was all about Mary. Mary J. Blige walked away with the performance of the weekend, showing a definitive command of the audience. The queen of hip-hop soul had the New Orleans crowd in a frenzy like a Reggie Bush touchdown, opening up her catalog and doling out cherished ditties such as “Real Love.” When Blige brought out Trey Songz to sing on “We Got Hood Love,” Trigger, of course, got another resounding ovation from the ladies. “Thank you for helping your big sister out,” Mary told Trey. “Sweet Thang” was huge, likely going over heavy because of its sing-along factor, and the audience was so enthralled on “I’m Going Down,” Mary only had to sing one line to tear the roof off the Dome. “Time on my hands, since you been away boy,” the female fans roared, taking over the reins of the record. “Sleep doesn’t come easy,” Mary soon joined in, but the hypnotized spectators kept singing the lyrics. After the record, Blige struck a b-girl pose with her fist balled almost all the way up and her thumb touching her chin. “Let me say this, the Mary J. Blige fans are in the building. I’m having a great time,” Mary said before complimenting the ladies on how good they were looking and how great they sounded. “We’ve reached that point in the night when we have to address some things,” she continued. The Queen then advised the women that some people will try to push them down, and that there’s only one way to handle those people: Tell them you’re trying to get up. “We will have no more drama,” she insisted, following up with “No More Drama.” “I may not be perfect for you, but I’m perfect for me,” Mary told the ladies. She also said she was cool with her imperfections. “It can only make me better to know I am imperfect. … It’s only one you baby. It’s only one you, original, baby.” The tempo soon changed up: “I wanna keep y’all hype right now. Keep y’all right,” she said. T.I. then came onstage for “Good Love” and the fans went crazy. Mary hugged Tip and he saluted the crowd. Blige’s set ended with her smashes “Family Affair” and “Be Without You.” The night before, the highlight on the bill was Alicia Keys, who was introduced by Jada Pinkett Smith. The five-months pregnant singer, who appeared to be standing on six-inch heels, slipped and fell onstage during “Love Is Blind,” but she never missed a beat (her vocals were nearly flawless) or a lyric. She got right back up and went to the piano and played. Keys’ set had several signature moments, including “You Don’t Know My Name” and “Fallin’.” And though she did show her skills on the piano for cuts like “Diary,” A.K. got up and danced on several selections, including “Un-thinkable (I’m Ready).” Related Photos Essence Music Festival Takes Over New Orleans Superdome Related Artists Mary J. Lilith Fair Forced To Ax 10 Shows

Sarah McLachlan-headlined festival is struggling at the box office. By Gil Kaufman Sarah McLachlan at Lilith Fair in Calgary, Alberta, on June 27 Photo: David Bergman/ Getty Images In the midst of one of the cruelest summers the touring industry has had in decades, the Lilith Fair announced on Thursday that it was canceling 10 dates as a result of soft ticket sales. The female-centric tour, headlined by founder Sarah McLachlan, made its return to amphitheaters after an 11-year layoff on Sunday in Calgary, but co-founder Terry McBride admitted in a statement that slow box office has forced him to pull a number of upcoming dates. “We are in the midst of one of the most challenging summer concert seasons with many tours being cancelled outright,” McBride said in a statement. “Everyone involved with the tour would like to apologize to the fans and artists scheduled to play in these markets, and express appreciation for all the support for the festival’s return. Lilith remains the only tour of its kind, and we are confident that fans will be amazed by what each date has to offer.” The affected dates are: Salt Lake City (July 12), Montreal (July 23), Raleigh (August 4), Charlotte (August 6), West Palm Beach (August 10), Tampa (August 11), Birmingham (August 12), Austin (August 14), Houston (August 15) and Dallas (August 16). Because of the cancellations, some of the artists who were set to appear later in the tour may be performing in other cities. Fans are encouraged to check Lilithfair.com for updates on lineups. One of the most successful package tours of its era in the late 1990s (1997-1999), McLachlan and McBride decided to bring Lilith — which features a rotating list of headliners — back this year with a roster of tour veterans and a number of new stars. Among the acts taking part this year are: Erykah Badu, Rihanna, Gossip, Colbie Caillat, Cat Power, Selena Gomez, Corinne Bailey Rae, Indigo Girls, Kelly Clarkson, Jill Scott, Heart, Queen Latifah, Norah Jones, Mary J. Blige, Metric, Miranda Lambert, Sheryl Crow, Tegan and Sara, Sugarland, and Janelle Monae. The cancellations come during a summer in which the touring industry — which had record $4.4 billion grosses last summer — is struggling in the midst of a rash of concert cancellations and soft-selling tours. U2 were forced to postpone the latest leg of their 360 Tour when singer Bono suffered a back injury during rehearsals; Christina Aguilera pulled the plug on a summer tour promoting her Bionic album, citing scheduling conflicts; and Limp Bizkit called off its entire slate of amphitheater shows after complaining that they were not appropriate venues for the band. Maxwell also mothballed a leg of his summer tour just weeks before Simon & Garfunkel did the same due to a vocal injury suffered by Art Garfunkel. Related Artists Sarah McLachlan

Janet Jackson Says ‘I Love My Life’

‘It took me a good minute to get here, it really did,’ the pop star tells Essence in August cover story. By Mawuse Ziegbe Janet Jackson on the August 2010 cover of “Essence” Photo: Essence Communications To her fans, Janet Jackson would appear to have emerged from an especially taxing year. The pop star just marked the one-year anniversary of brother Michael’s death and, last year, ended her relationship with longtime boyfriend Jermaine Dupri . But despite her personal trials, Jackson recently revealed that she’s in a good place in her life. “It took me a good minute to get here, it really did. But I love my life,” Jackson tells Essence in the August issue hitting newsstands July 12. “I only wish I had this confidence when I was younger.” Although Jackson may have lacked confidence in her early years, the hitmaker maintained that she has no qualms about aging; an outlook the Jackson family matriarch, Katherine, instilled in her and her celebrity siblings. “Mother always raised us to believe that age was just a number. All of us — my sisters, my brothers — we’ll just tell you our ages because it’s all about where you are mentally and how you feel about yourself.” Perhaps Jackson’s attitude is also influenced by the new inroads she’s making in her career. The diva has ramped up her acting work in recent months, pulling off an emotional performance in “Why Did I Get Married Too?” Jackson is also scheduled to begin shooting the star-studded “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf,” helmed by Tyler Perry, and with such co-stars as Whoopi Goldberg and Kerry Washington. The megastar also relished her overall independence. “I’m so fortunate. I’m a free agent. I’m not trapped in a contract where I’m unhappy,” Jackson said. “I’m very free, and I love this feeling. I can do whatever I want.” And while Jackson may not be committing to any recording projects just yet, she isn’t shying away from the stage. The singer is slated to perform at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans this weekend. Jackson will hit the stage alongside several acts, including Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige and Trey Songz. Movieline Interview Flashback: Restrepo Directors Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington

“I hope if anything that’s we’ve made the most visceral war documentary that one can see, and the most honest.” Those were Tim Hetherington’s words in January, a week before his and Sebastian Junger’s Restrepo won the Sundance Film Festival’s U.S. documentary jury prize. The film opens theatrically today to even more acclaim . For the occasion, Movieline is republishing Seth Abramovitch ‘s in-depth interview with the filmmakers from Park City. Twenty-four hours after catching Restrepo at Sundance — a war documentary that offers an unprecedented glimpse at a full year’s deployment in the most dangerous region of Afghanistan — and I still can’t shake its startling, enthralling, and frequently devastating images. If anything, they’ve only embedded themselves deeper. Yesterday, I had an opportunity to speak at length with the two filmmakers, veteran war correspondents both, responsible for bringing Restrepo to the screen: Sebastian Junger, best-selling author of The Perfect Storm , and award-winning photojournalist, Tim Hetherington.
