At Cannes: Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Biutiful Reinvention

Alejandro González Iñárritu, who rankled critics with his films 21 Grams and Babel (especially), has directed the best film shown so far at the festival. Biutiful stars Javier Bardem as a financially struggling, cancer-stricken father of two ensnared by his illness, a bipolar wife and his bleak day-to-day existence.

Shia LaBeouf Admits He ‘Wasn’t Impressed’ With ‘Transformers’ Sequel

Actor says third outing ‘restores a human element that got lost in the second movie.’ By Adam Rosenberg Shia LaBeouf in “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” Photo: Paramount Last summer’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” left a fair number of fans and critics disappointed. For all of the slick action and convincing CG effects, a too-strong focus on the alien robots made human stars Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox feel like supporting players. LaBeouf, who is currently promoting “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” at the Cannes Film Festival, acknowledges the sequel’s shortfalls and promises a more fulfilling experience in July 2011’s “Transformers 3.” “When I saw the second movie, I wasn’t impressed with what we did,” the actor said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in France. “There were some really wild stunts in it, but the heart was gone.” LaBeouf is about to start work on the 2011 sequel, and he’s feeling optimistic about the possibilities. After affirming that he thinks the next outing will be the best one yet, he went on to reveal that the script “restores a human element that got lost in the second movie.” MTV News recently spoke with “Transformers” producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura , who promised a third movie that digs even deeper into the established franchise’s mythology. “We are going to continue to explore the past in the third one and that will continue to inform the present,” he explained. “You try to get as close as you can to the lore, and sometimes you run into pieces where there’s not enough information to make a judgment, so you make you own call.” Fans have been hearing this for some time. Director Michael Bay has a lot of love for the “Transformers” universe, and, as a fan, he wants to do these movies right. Hasbro head Brian Goldner told MTV News as much in an interview earlier this year. “What we’re really doing is getting back to some of the core character development and storytelling. And I think there’s some elements of the core story that the filmmakers, Michael in particular, wanted to tell,” Goldner explained. “He’s really well-versed in the Transformers lore. So I think you’ll see, you know, less bedlam, more characters.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Transformers 3.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Cannes Film Festival Kicks Off With ‘Robin Hood’

‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,’ ‘Fair Game’ and more films are set to premiere at the fest. By Jocelyn Vena Russell Crowe stars in “Robin Hood” Photo: Universal Pictures Not even rain could dampen the mood as the Cannes Film Festival kicked off Wednesday (May 12) in the French resort town that gives the fest its name. The A-list stars are expected to turn out to premiere several big flicks at this year’s event; Russell Crowe, Naomi Watts and Shia LaBeouf are just a few whose films will be presented at the annual festival, running until May 23. Director Tim Burton leads the judges’ panel, which includes Benicio Del Toro and Kate Beckinsale. The Crowe-starring and Ridley Scott-directed “Robin Hood” opens the festival. “This is the sort of film that you hope for and then you wait for because you get to step into a completely different world,” Crowe told MTV News of taking the role in the period flick. “You actually get to time-travel.” Among this year’s buzzed-about films are the sequel to 1987’s “Wall Street,” the LaBeouf-starring “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” which sees the young actor teaming with the original flick’s Michael Douglas. Naomi Watts has two films at Cannes: “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger,” co-starring Josh Brolin and directed by Woody Allen, and the Sean Penn CIA thriller “Fair Game.” Crowe’s “Robin Hood” isn’t slated for the competition portion of the festival; neither are “Wall Street” and “Dark Stranger.” Also at Cannes, Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling will screen “Blue Valentine,” which follows a married couple’s deteriorating union through flashbacks. “It’s a racy movie, so it’s hard to watch those scenes with so many people,” Gosling told MTV News in January, when the film showed at Sundance. “I watched it with my mother, she was beside me. I gave her an iPod. And when the naughty scenes came on, I pressed ‘play’ and covered her eyes.” Which Cannes films are you most looking forward to? Let us know in the comments below! Lenny Kravitz Headlining Gulf Aid To Benefit Gulf Coast

Show aimed at putting spotlight on devastating oil spill also features Mos Def, Ani DiFranco. By Gil Kaufman Lenny Kravitz Photo: Jo Hale/ Getty Images With much of the music world’s attention focused on the devastating flooding in Nashville , Lenny Kravitz is hoping to put some of that focus on the environmental disaster that continues to unfold on the Gulf Coast as a result of the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Kravitz, who is a part-time New Orleans resident, is the latest name added to an all-star benefit show, Gulf Aid , slated to take place on May 16 at Mardi Gras World River City. The concert will feature the rocker performing alongside Mos Def, Ani DiFranco, New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint, environmental activist/ poet/ singer Zachary Richard, New Orleans trumpeter Jeremy Davenport and the Voice of the Wetlands Allstars, which features Crescent City legends Dr. John, Tab Benoit, George Porter Jr., Waylon Thibodeaux, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux and Cyril Neville. Also participating are the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Soul Rebels Brass Band, Irvin Mayfield’s Playhouse Revue, Kermit Ruffins and the BBQ Swingers, Rebirth Brass Band, and others. Tickets are $50 and available exclusively at Elevate.com . Proceeds will be distributed to groups addressing wetlands/coastal environmental issues and the well-being of fishermen and the regional seafood industry, a vital part of the local economy. “I’ve come home to New Orleans to lend my support to fishermen & wildlife,” Kravitz tweeted on Monday. The show will come almost three weeks after an explosion on an oil-drilling rig off the Louisiana coast burst into flames and sank, setting off one of the biggest oil spills in the history of the Gulf of Mexico. So far, efforts to contain the leak have failed, as more than 210,000 gallons of light crude spew into the water daily, threatening vital wetland ecosystems off the Louisiana coast as well as one of the nation’s most fertile fishing regions. On Tuesday, organizers of the upcoming Hangout Beach Music & Arts Festival (May 14-16) in Gulf Shores, Alabama, announced that all profits from the three-day event will benefit coastal conservation and restoration. Hangout will feature sets from Phish’s Trey Anastasio and TAB, Zac Brown Band, John Legend, Ben Harper and Relentless7, Black Crowes, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Gov’t Mule, the Roots, Ray LaMontagne, Jakob Dylan, Spearhead, Matisyahu, Girl Talk, and OK Go.
