N.E.R.D. Say New Album Is ‘Very Psychedelic’

‘It’s a fun record and it’s geared toward the women,’ Shay Haley says. By Steven Roberts Photo: Sam Hendrick/ MTV News N.E.R.D. recorded several tracks for their new album — in fact, they recorded the entire album twice and still weren’t happy and, in the end, found themselves with nothing. “We had several [album] names throughout this process,” Shay Haley explained. “It’s just one day [Pharrell] called and said, ‘What do you think about the album title Nothing ?’ ” Shay said the group started with a blank slate and ultimately filled it in with songs inspired by two things: touring and women. The group has toured extensively since before the release of their third album Seeing Sounds in 2008. They’ve played several festivals, colleges and opened for both Kanye West and Jay-Z. And Pharrell said the touring influenced the type of music they made. “It’s funny — I think we were blessed in that sense,” Pharrell explained. “The music is very psychedelic for the most part — 80 percent of it is definitely flower-power, counterculture, release and let yourself be free and have a great time!” Pharrell also said they wanted to tap into a new understanding of the opposite sex and cater the album more towards women. The first single is “Hot N’ Fun” and features Nelly Furtado, who the gang recruited for her distinctive tone. “We think that the new definition of sexuality is the appreciation of life and the moment, and that’s why people should have sex. For the most part, when you and her are there and you’re having a special moment, it’s like, ‘Aww man, I could have been anywhere in the world, but I’m here with you! This is amazing to me! This is so cool — let’s do it,” Pharrell laughed. “I’m so kidding, by the way.” “It’s the ultimate spring, summertime record. It’s the festival record, it’s a fun record and it’s geared towards the women,” Shay offered. “What woman doesn’t want to put on their sundress and stroll through SoHo and have that as their theme music?” Nothing is due in stores June 15. Haylie Duff Trying to be Sexy and Useless of the Day

Haylie Duff tried to sex it up at Newport Beach Film Festival because it was the only Film Festival that was bottom feeding enough to let her be the special invited guest as no other actual movie stars would return their calls, while Haylie Duff had little else to do and was honored to be a part of the shit, since she’s been in movies despite lookin’ like a bootleg Sarah Jessica Parker, which isn’t saying much, because an actual Sarah Jessica Parker is hideous and I guess the real entertaining thing in all this was that she tied up her button down men’s shirt like some kind of slut improvising an outfit for her walk of shame to be less shamefull….in a Britney Spears first video kinda way…with a hell of a lot less impact..in fact shit was so bad my photoshop crashed 10 times when trying to resize these fuckers..but you probably like it because you like anything with breasts. Cusack Blames iPhone for Wonky Tweets

Do you lose a little piece of your soul every time John Cusack tweets a misspelled word like “breakfasy,” “lysten,” or “hippocrite”? “I’m pretty new to it, and if there’s a spell check on an iPhone, I can’t find it,” the actor told the NYT . “So I basically get in the general ballpark and tweet it.” Still, he can’t understand why grammarians bust his chops: “The vitriol was so intense that at first I didn’t think they were serious. Because, like, who would care?” [ NYT ]

Moment of Truth: Alex Gibney on Casino Jack (and the Rest of His Documentary Binge)

If you think you may have read a disproportionate amount of coverage here over the last few weeks about filmmaker Alex Gibney, you’re probably right. But it’s only because the Oscar-winning documentarian has a staggering number of films arriving on the scene at once: In addition to his three movies debuting at the ongoing Tribeca Film Festival, Gibney’s Casino Jack and the United States of Money opens tomorrow in limited release. Not even Werner Herzog can match than kind of productivity, though as Gibney told Movieline, it was kind of accidental for himself as well.

Untitled Eliot Spitzer Film Screens For Standing-Room Only Tribeca Crowd

My first full day of Tribeca Film Festival duty really came down to the what’s already the hottest-ticket item of the entire week ahead: Untitled Eliot Spitzer Film , director Alex Gibney’s work-in-progress documentary about the career and eventual disgrace of the former New York governor. Being unfinished, reviewers are forbidden from writing especially in-depth about it. But here’s one nugget: It’s not untitled at all, even though to hear Gibney tell it in his introduction to a packed house, the working title Client-9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer may yet lose out to that more abstract, curious namelessless in the festival program.
