‘True Blood’ Premiere Leaves Fans Thirsty For Answers

Season five kicked off as sexy as ever, but we’ve still got some secrets we’d like to uncover. By Kara Warner Stephen Moyer, Alexander Skarsgard and Lucy Griffiths in “True Blood” Photo: Lacey Terrell/ HBO Just when we were thinking that this summer needed a little more sizzle, HBO’s steamy vampire soap “True Blood” returned with all the nudity, over-the-top sex scenes and drama we’d been missing. Spoilers ahead for those who haven’t yet watched the season five premiere. For those who have, read on as we wrestle with a few new burning questions, along with some unanswered holdovers : How will Eric and Bill Be Punished? If there is anyone within the “True Blood” universe who takes corporal punishment seriously, it’s the Vampire Authority. As such, there is no way that Eric and Bill will escape their uptight, unforgiving clutches without a few flesh wounds. The King and his Sheriff really should face the True Death for their sins against the Authority, but we all know that there is no way HBO would kill off two of the most beloved characters — this isn’t “Game of Thrones.” So the question remains: How will Bill and Eric pay for their crimes? What Big Secret Is Terry Hiding From Arlene? We’ve known about Terry Bellefleur’s PTSD demons for several seasons now, but they haven’t posed a serious problem story-wise until this season. Clearly the arrival and continued presence of Terry’s war buddy Patrick (Scott Foley) is causing serious stress for several reasons, but why? What really happened that night in Iraq? And since this is “True Blood,” what sort of supernatural elements might be in play? When Will Alcide Find Out About Debbie? Those of us who’ve read Charlaine Harris’ books know that the Debbie Pelt murder plotline provided for plenty of drama between Sookie and Alcide, which makes us wonder just how long Alan Ball and company will draw out this particular plot point this season. Yes, Sookie killed someone, but because it was in self-defense, why do she and Lafayette have to be so secretive about it? Alcide knew that Debbie hated Sookie, surely he’ll understand? Regardless, we imagine Alcide will find out right before he and Sookie hookup or profess love to each other or something dramatic. What Happened to Jesus’ Body? Poor Lafayette. The man has been through some serious emotional strife. He finally allows himself to fall in love with a decent man for once, and that man turns out to be a brujo who in turn helps Lafayette uncover a few supernatural abilities of his own, which eventually leads to his death at the hands of Lafayette (who was possessed at the time). All Lafayette wanted to do was bury his dead lover’s body and say goodbye, but now his body is missing? What the heck happened to it? Who would take a dead man’s body and what will they do with it? We’ve already seen Jesus’ ghost once, will we be seeing him later this season fully reanimated in some way, shape or form? How Undead Is Tara? Tara’s not dead! More specifically Tara is now undead, a vampire. The last we saw of her she wanted to drain the life from her BFF Sookie, but we know that won’t happen. Odds are that Tara is not going to be pleased about being turned into a vampire, by Pam of all people, so how is she going to handle that? We don’t see her becoming BFFs with any of the vamps who terrified her before so this plotline could get really ugly really quickly. Maybe she could befriend Jessica? Tara is the most stubborn character on the show, so she’s going to have to be forced into seeking or receiving help, but from whom? What questions did you have after the “True Blood” premiere? Leave your comment below!

New York trio recall seeing jam-band legends at Madison Square Garden. By Rya Backer Photo: MTV News Bonnaroo 2012 came to a close Sunday night with a four-hour (and only four-hour, contrary to rumors circulating the campgrounds that they’d play until 6 a.m.) set by Phish , which featured such crowd favorites as “Sample in a Jar” and “Tweezer.” But before the masses filled the muddy field a final time, we caught up with Fun. for one last go at our trusty Bonnaroo quiz — now with new questions! The New York trio had no problem spelling the name of the festival — a talent that, given the response of the rest of the acts we talked to throughout the weekend, ought to be celebrated. Nor did they see much around the festival that they didn’t take to. Then we asked them to do their best Phish air guitar solo. Members Jack Antonoff and Nate Ruess deflected that question and instead offered a story of a time they saw Phish at New York’s Madison Square Garden several years ago instead. “We don’t smoke pot,” guitarist Antonoff started. “But the Garden, which is a large space, it got so hot-boxed. When we left, we were just like, ‘Ehhhhhhh’ ” — a fancy way of saying they were perhaps feeling the effects of the space’s second-hand smoke. “We stumbled into a bar, and we were like, ‘What should we dooooo?’ ” frontman Ruess added. They finally agreed upon “two things of nachos, three hamburgers.” So it wasn’t exactly the answer we expected, but envisioning some of our favorite rockers destroying some bar food worked just as well. And we can only wonder how they fared after Sunday evening’s performance … Did you experience Bonnaroo 2012? Share your favorite moments in the comments below! Mac Miller Introduces Bonnaroo To Pink Slime

Pittsburgh rapper performs ‘On a Roll’ from his new Pharrell collaboration EP during final night of the Tennessee music festival. By Nadeska Alexis, with reporting by Rya Backer Mac Miller performs at Bonnaroo on Sunday Photo: Erika Goldring/WireImage Mac Miller hit Manchester, Tennessee, on Sunday for the final round of performances at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival , treating fans to a few of his biggest mixtape hits and giving the first U.S. performance of his Pharrell collaboration “On A Roll.” The Pittsburgh rapper tackled hits like “Donald Trump” and a slew of new material from his Macadelic mixtape , including the Cam’ron-featured “Ignorant” and “Angels.” Mac also decided that Bonnaroo was the perfect place to give the first live performance of his brand-new single “On a Roll,” the first track released from Pink Slime, his collaboration EP with Pharrell. And, being that it was a music festival, Mac kept energy levels up within the vast crowd by mixing things up and paying tribute to a few legendary musicians. He hosted a sing-a-long to Bob Marley and covered Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror,” in addition to dropping a couple tracks from Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G. into his set. Before his set, Mac played a little coy about his performance backstage, telling MTV News he’d just be happy if the crowd knew his songs. “I picture that I’m gonna go out there and no one’s gonna know who I am, so that probably will suck,” he said. “But if people do know who I am, that will be tight.” How many surprises did he have planned for the set? “Zero,” he joked. “I couldn’t bring my video screen, I don’t think, but I think [maybe] I could’ve because Skrillex brought his spaceship,” he wondered out loud. “So I could’ve definitely brought my video screens, but we’re just gonna do a cool show and it’s just about trying to turn tens of thousands of people into an intimate crowd.” Related Videos Bonnaroo 2012 Gets The Party Started Related Photos 2012 Bonnaroo Music And Arts Festival Related Artists Mac Miller

Radiohead Serve Up Another Legendary Bonnaroo Set

On Friday night, the icons surpass the sky-high expectations set by their 2006 festival appearance. By Mary J. DiMeglio Radiohead’s Thom Yorke performs at Bonnaroo Friday Photo: C Flanigan/ Getty Images MANCHESTER, Tennessee — With two very different albums under their belt since they last graced the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival’s farm with their fabled 2006 appearance, Radiohead more than lived up to the hype with their Friday night return at the 11th annual event. Starting out with The King of Limbs’ propulsive opening cut, “Bloom,” the icons heavily favored their newer tracks when they brought their world tour to Tennessee, also adding “Give Up the Ghost,” “Lotus Flower” and “Morning Mr Magpie” to the set. In that legendary 2006 show, during which they delighted with an epic 28 songs, they tried out six new tunes that successfully made their way onto 2007’s In Rainbows . They represented that diverse album Friday night with fan favorite “15 Step,” “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi,” “Nude” and “Bodysnatchers.” The recording’s “Reckoner” inspired amateur fireworks. With Amnesiac ‘s “I Might Be Wrong,” their dancy live version of Hail to the Thief ‘s “The Gloaming” and Kid A rave-up “Idioteque,” the set list was decidedly more energetic than the mellower selections they presented at the Coachella festival in April. Halfway through the set, just as casual fans were no doubt wondering whether they were going to hear anything familiar, “Karma Police” gave them the chance to participate in the “This is what you get when you mess with us” singalong. Another highlight was the “True Love Waits” lullaby seguing into “Everything In Its Right Place,” when a ponytailed Thom Yorke had everyone clapping along as he took to his keyboard. Radiohead also performed two new songs: “Identikit” and the groovy “Supercollider,” which Yorke said was “for Jack White.” As their scheduled midnight end time came and went, Yorke announced, “We bid you all farewell,” before answering the wishes of many by ending with “Paranoid Android,” dedicating it to “all the people we can’t see in the back.” Earlier in the day, Tune-yards jammed out the sax solo on “Bizness,” Sharon Jones commanded the main stage in the afternoon in a shiny bright-pink cocktail dress and Foster the People brought their feel-good tunes. Friday also featured Feist, Ludacris, Major Lazer, and Mos Def and Talib Kweli joining forces as Black Star. Jam-band mainstays Umphrey’s McGee, Flying Lotus and Dumpstaphunk, who busted out David Bowie’s “Fame,” kept fans dancing until the early morning. Still to come this weekend: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Skrillex, Alice Cooper and the Roots will take the stage Saturday (June 9), and the Beach Boys, Phish, the Shins, Fun. and Bon Iver will wrap things up Sunday. Bonnaroo Gets Party Started With Alabama Shakes, Kendrick Lamar

Variety is the rule at Tennessee festival’s Thursday kickoff. By Mary J. DiMeglio Kendrick Lamar performs at Bonnaroo 2012 Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images MANCHESTER, Tennessee — The 11th annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival kicked off Thursday with a characteristically diverse mix of artists representing funk, blues, hip-hop, reggae, electronic, indie rock and even mariachi. The rootsy Alabama Shakes , who broke earlier this year, nabbed a closing spot on opening night, grooving through “Hang Loose” and their first single, “Hold On.” Frontwoman Brittany Howard had the crowd feeling her pain as she wailed “Rise to the Sun.” For photos from Bonnaroo, click here. Kendrick Lamar brought his West Coast gangsta rap to the dirty South. And while he clearly had many fans in the crowd — spitting along to “P & P” and “A.D.H.D.” — he took time to address a vocal hater in the front row. “He’s telling us that I’m not the best rapper alive today,” Lamar announced. “Can I prove it to him?” He responded with the frantic “Look Out for Detox.” Earlier in the night, the stage was handled by rappers Danny Brown and Shady Records signee Yelawolf. Soja’s devotees were treated to “Here I Am,” “Everything Changes” and a bit of advice from singer Jacob Hemphill, who urged his audience of reggae lovers to check out Bad Brains, hardcore punk pioneers who also delved into reggae. Bad Brains is scheduled for their first Bonnaroo appearance on Saturday afternoon. Just after sunset, Moon Taxi lit up That Tent with jazzy keyboard and bass solos. Also Thursday, Big Gigantic managed to seamlessly blend Jay-Z’s “Dirt Off Your Shoulder,” Aloe Blacc’s “I Need a Dollar,” electro and high-speed drum and bass — all while featuring live saxophone. Mimosa gave a shout-out to fellow Bonnaroo performer Ludacris, mixing the rapper’s “What’s Your Fantasy” into a set that also included DJ Darude’s decade-old trance classic “Sandstorm.” Over four days, nights and early mornings, Bonnaroo will bring fans more than 150 bands and nearly two dozen comedians. Friday (June 8) features Radiohead, Foster the People, Feist, and Mos Def and Talib Kweli as Black Star. The 2012 lineup also includes Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Beach Boys, Phish, Skrillex, Alice Cooper, Fun. and Bon Iver. Are you at Bonnaroo? Share your review in the comments below! That’s My Boy: 9 Life Lessons — and Mad Rhymes — from Vanilla Ice

Stop. Collaborate and listen. Ice is back with a brand new invention. No, really! He is. Rob Van Winkle, who you know as ‘90s rap sensation Vanilla Ice, has a major role in this summer’s new Adam Sandler comedy That’s My Boy , in which he plays himself, Vanilla Ice. The set-up: Donny Berger (Sandler) became famous in the ‘80s for having an affair with his hot teacher. Donny knew Ice from the flash in the pan/has-been circuit, and goes back to hang out with Ice when he reunites with the grown son ( Andy Samberg ) he fathered. Winkle joined the stars of That’s My Boy at a press conference over the weekend, and he stole the panel right from Sandler and Samberg. He’s still dropping mad rhymes, and they’re full of wisdom from his 20 years of growing up and self-reflection on the Vanilla Ice days. We could all take a lesson from Vanilla Ice, so start with some of these. 1. No slippin’ on your pimpin’. “You keep your hustle tight and you never get caught slippin’ on your pimpin’,” Winkle said when the panel was asked how they deal with failures in their careers. Our takeaway is that he has not been slippin’ on his pimpin’, since Winkle keeps working, even on reality shows like Surreal Life and Celebrity Bull Riding . “If you get caught slippin’ on your pimpin’ you’re up sh*t creek without a paddle.” 2. Well, just in case you need that paddle… If you end up paddle-less in a creek, all is not lost. “Learn how to swim through the trenches and get to the other side and when you get there it’ll be paradise for you. I was in the trenches, trying to get to the other side. Sh*t creek, I found a paddle. [Sandler] helped me with the other paddle and here we are.” 3. Embrace the past. “We are who we are because of who we were, which I had to accept, and there’s a little truth to that,” Winkle said when we asked if he’s always thinking in deep wisdom and mad rhymes. 4. Look to the future. “Yesterday’s history, tomorrow is a mystery,” Winkle said when asked if this movie comeback could lead to a Cool As Ice 2. Not only would a Cool as Ice sequel be awesome, it’s also good advice in general. “Take it day by day, man. Get in where you fit in and enjoy the ride. You never know about it.” 5. These mad rhymes matter. These slogans kept the press laughing, but Winkle explained he truly uses them to get through life. “That’s one thing I’ve learned, I live off these little phrases. It’s not all jokes, but these little phrases, they’re more valuable than thousands of dollars worth of therapy to me. They make sense.” 6. Love yourself. “Be yourself, enjoy yourself,” was another one of Winkle’s life lessons. More specifically, find the place that’s right for you, whether it’s rapping or starring in an Adam Sandler movie. “I just get in where I fit in.” 7. Be happy. In a genre of music that can often spiral into anger and violence, positivity is important. “Show me a smile and I’ll show you one back. They’re contagious. So, it works for me. Stay positive, good things happen. Look where I’m at.” 8. Mind the company you keep. It also matters who you let in your life. The Sandler crew was good for Winkle, but be careful of your entourage. “Show me who your friends are and I’ll show you who you are. Karma, believe in it. It’s real. It comes back to you.” 9. Listen to your mother (and word to her!) Since the film is about an embarrassing parent, the panel was asked what they learned from their parents. Winkle shared his mother’s lesson. Maybe mad wisdom runs in the family. “My mom always told me, ‘Act smarter than you are. Always know where your exit is in case you get into too much trouble.’” To borrow from the immortal popular words of Mr. Van Winkle: If there was a problem, yo, he’ll solve it. That’s My Boy opens June 15.
