Bingham Ray, Indie Legend and Sundance Regular, Dead at 57

This is just terrible, terrible news: Former United Artists boss, October Films cofounder and recent appointee as S.F. Film Society executive director Bingham Ray has passed away following a series of strokes suffered while attending the Sundance Film Festival — an event from which his name and influence have been inseparable for more than two decades. He was 57. “It is with great sadness that the Sundance Institute acknowledges the passing of Bingham Ray, cherished independent film executive and most recently Executive Director of the San Francisco Film Society,” read a release just received at Movieline HQ. “On behalf of the independent film community here in Park City for the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and elsewhere, we offer our support and condolences to his family. Bingham’s many contributions to this community and business are indelible, and his legacy will not be soon forgotten.” No kidding. Ray commenced his film career in 1981 as a manager and programmer at New York’s defunct Bleecker Street Cinema, co-founding October Films a decade later with Jeff Lipsky. Initially set up shop for the purpose of distributing Mike Leigh’s Life is Sweet , October eventually distributed such renowned ’90s indies as Secrets and Lies , Breaking the Waves , Lost Highway , The Apostle and Ruby in Paradise , the 1993 Sundance Grand Jury Winner that further reinforced the festival as one of the industry’s foremost movie markets. The company’s DNA survives today Focus Features, which evolved from a series of mergers between Universal, Vivendi, and other distributors in the late ’90s/early ’00s. Ray had since occupied top spots at United Artists (where he’d helped shepherd Bowling to Columbine No Man’s Land to Oscar wins) and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment before veering into consulting and teaching, ultimately taking over the SFFS last year after its executive director Graham Leggat succumbed to cancer. He had also worked recently as an advisor to digital distributor SnagFilms, the Film Society at Lincoln Center (which recently opened its first-run Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center) and as a professor at New York University. Late last week in Park City, word of Ray’s condition spread quickly. He was first hospitalized Thursday in Provo, Utah; on Friday, one of his daughters told TheWrap and Ray had suffered a second, “more serious” stroke. The festival announced his passing just after noon local time. Bingham Ray is survived by his wife, Nancy, son Nick, daughters Annabel and Becca, and sisters Susan Clair and Deb Pope. He was one of the true good guys — supportive, insightful, broad-minded, funny and utterly devoted to films and the artists who made them. He will be mourned, missed, cherished and remembered for a long time to come. R.I.P., Bing. [Photo: Getty Images]

Bingham Ray Dies At Sundance

October Films co-founder and San Francisco Film Society executive director died near the Sundance Film Festival. By Josh Wigler Bingham Ray Photo: Arun Nevader/WireImage PARK CITY, Utah — Bingham Ray, a champion of independent filmmaking, died on Monday (January 23) near Park City, Utah, the Sundance Institute has announced. Ray, 57, was the co-founder of October Films and the executive director of the San Francisco Film Society. He suffered a stroke during the Sundance Film Festival last week and was initially hospitalized in Park City. Following a second stroke, Ray was transferred to Provo, where he later died. “It is with great sadness that the Sundance Institute acknowledges the passing of Bingham Ray, cherished independent film executive and most recently Executive Director of the San Francisco Film Society,” reads a statement posted on Deadline . “On behalf of the independent film community in Park City for the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and elsewhere, we offer our support and condolences to his family. Bingham’s many contributions to this community and business are indelible, and his legacy will not be soon forgotten.” “The board of directors and staff of the Film Society are stunned and deeply saddened by the untimely death of our executive director Bingham Ray,” said Pat McBaine, board president of the San Francisco Film Society. “We at the Film Society and the entire film community have lost far too early an energetic and visionary impact player who has helped shape the independent film industry for decades in so many important and valuable ways.” Ray is perhaps best known as the co-founder of October Films, the 1990s-era independent film production company and distributor responsible for movies such as “Secrets and Lies,” “Lost Highway” and “Cherry Falls.” October was later acquired by Universal Pictures and renamed USA Films, which itself became the basis of Focus Features, Universal’s art house arm that counts “In Bruges” and “Milk” among its many credits. The San Francisco Film Society named Ray as executive director in November 2011 after the death of the SFFS’ director Graham Leggat this past August. Robert Pattinson’s ‘Cosmopolis’ Wins MTV Movie Brawl

More than 3 million votes were cast to push the David Cronenberg-directed indie over brand-new franchise ‘The Hunger Games.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Pattinson and Sarah Gadon in “Cosmopolis” Photo: David Cronenberg The final buzzer has sounded, the brawl for it all is over, and Robert Pattinson is the last man standing: “Cosmopolis” has won MTV Movie Brawl 2012 . His indie drama made for one hell of a Cinderella story in the vote-driven tournament to pick the must-see movie of the year. Entering the bracket as a #4 seed (following an impressive showing in the play-in round), “Cosmopolis” appeared to be facing an unavoidable Elite Eight ouster. What were the chances Pattinson’s cerebral film about a young finance wiz taking a day-long limo ride though New York City would beat “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2”? Apparently pretty good. Fans banded together, choosing to support RPattz’s post-vampire career rather than the franchise that made him a star. “Breaking Dawn” was sent packing. And so, after easily fighting off “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Cosmopolis” came to face “The Hunger Games,” a brand-new franchise that had waltzed through the tournament and seemed to be the odds-on favorite to win the whole tourney. But it was not to be. After more than 3 million votes and a slew of lead changes, Pattinson’s film beat back Jennifer Lawrence’s series to become the undisputed champion of the Movie Brawl. Hours before voting closed Monday afternoon (January 23), with “Cosmopolis” staking out an insurmountable lead and the MTV Movies team at the Sundance Film Festival, we broke the news to Pattinson’s co-star, Paul Giamatti, that their film had won the tournament. “Holy cow, that’s astounding!” he said. “The fact of that is amazing. … That’s a really cool thing that it brings that visibility to that movie.” It’s been a whirlwind few weeks in the tournament, so we’d like to thank all the fans who voted. The Brawl broke bigger than we could have ever hoped. Well over 5 million votes were cast. The competition spread wildly over Twitter and Facebook. Our comments sections caught fire as fans debated, argued and rallied. In the end, though, only one film could stand as the undisputed champion of the MTV Movie Brawl. Tom Cruise Sings ‘Like An Opera Singer’ In ‘Rock Of Ages’

‘He’s Superman to me. He can do anything he sets his mind to,’ co-star Malin Akerman says. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Tom Cruise in “Rock of Ages” Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures PARK CITY, Utah — He can run. He can climb cliff sides without harnesses. Heck, he can even scale the surface of the world’s tallest building . And now, for his next trick, Tom Cruise will truly do the impossible: sing his heart out in front of moviegoers nationwide. The “Mission Impossible” actor will next be seen as fictional rock god Stacee Jaxx in “Rock of Ages,” director Adam Shankman’s adaptation of the Broadway musical. If you think it’s bizarre casting, take it from Cruise’s costar, Malin Akerman — according to her, there is literally nothing that Cruise can’t do, carrying a tune included. “He’s brilliant. You’re going to be blown away,” Akerman told MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival , which she’s attending as an ambassador for the Brita FilterForGood Music Project campaign. “His voice is ridiculous.” Akerman should know. As reporter Constance Sack, she only has one musical number in “Rock of Ages” — a cover of “I Want to Know What Love Is” by Foreigner — which she sings opposite Cruise. “I auditioned with Cruise. We did our scene together and then I had to sing in the studio [for a musical audition],” she said of landing the role. “My role was actually one of the last ones cast, so I was the last onboard and had the least amount of prep [time]. It was nerve-wracking, to have to go in and sing in the audition.” But Akerman says any anxiety was transformed into elation when performing opposite Cruise, a Hollywood icon she likens to an equally iconic superhero. “He’s Superman to me. He can do anything he sets his mind to,” she said, adding that on top of his talent as an actor and his ability to perform breathtaking stunts, Cruise can also “sing like an opera singer.” “When you’re with Tom, you give it your all,” Akerman said. “It was really amazing and surreal.” The 2012 Sundance Film Festival is officially under way, and the MTV Movies team is on the ground reporting on the hottest stars and the movies everyone will be talking about in the year to come. Neil Young Angered By ‘Sound Of Music Today’

‘We’re in the 21st century and we have the worst sound that we’ve ever had,’ Young tells MTV News at Sundance Film Festival. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Neil Young Photo: MTV News PARK CITY, Utah — It’s hard to argue about the digital age of music in terms of efficiency and portability. When it comes down to cycling through shelves upon shelves of old CDs versus taking one’s entire library of music on the go in a single handheld device, the choice seems rather clear. But convenience aside, there is something missing in the digital translation of tunes — at least there is according to legendary folk rocker Neil Young, who spoke with MTV News in Park City (where he’s promoting the Slamdance release of his new Jonathan Demme-helmed documentary “Neil Young Journeys”) and expressed his concerns over the current state of “the sound of music.” “I’m finding that I have a little bit of trouble with the quality of the sound of music today,” Young said. “I don’t like it. It just makes me angry. Not the quality of the music, but we’re in the 21st century and we have the worst sound that we’ve ever had. It’s worse than a 78 [rpm record]. Where are our geniuses? What happened?” Young argued that MP3s feature only 5 percent of the data from an original master file, which he sees as a major problem. “If you’re an artist and you created something and you knew the master was 100 percent great, but the consumer got 5 percent, would you be feeling good?” he asked. “I like to point that out to artists. That’s why people listen to music differently today. It’s all about the bottom and the beat driving everything, and that’s because in the resolution of the music, there’s nothing else you can really hear. The warmth and the depth at the high end is gone.” The singer-songwriter likened the current state of music to an equally present political movement: “It’s like Occupy Music — the 5 percent, that’s who we are now. We used to be the hundred percent!” Young isn’t unilaterally dissatisfied with the modern era of music, however. He said he’s pleased by the returning popularity of the folk genre, for instance, particularly in the hands of capable musicians like Mumford and Sons and My Morning Jacket. “Mumford and Sons and My Morning Jacket are great bands,” Young said. “I love them both and I know them well. I feel good about saying that.” The 2012 Sundance Film Festival is officially under way, and the MTV Movies team is on the ground reporting on the hottest stars and the movies everyone will be talking about in the year to come. Daniel Radcliffe Is ‘Phenomenal,’ Elizabeth Olsen Raves

‘Martha Marcy May Marlene’ actress is getting ready to star opposite Radcliffe in the thriller ‘Kill Your Darlings.’ By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Cillian Murphy and Elizxabeth Olson Photo: MTV News PARK CITY, Utah — Daniel Radcliffe is no longer just the Boy Who Lived — at this stage, he’s the Man Who Flourished. Indeed, Radcliffe has kept his post-“Potter” career very interesting, what with a turn as a horror lead in next month’s “Woman in Black,” a lengthy run on Broadway in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” and even a hosting stint on “Saturday Night Live” earlier this year. He’s set to keep his fans guessing even further with his next confirmed movie, “Kill Your Darlings,” which tells the tale of how Beat Generation icons Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and Lucien Carr first met — and how that meeting eventually led to murder. Radcliffe plays Ginsberg in the film, and starring opposite him is up-and-coming actress Elizabeth Olsen. The brilliant young star of “Martha Marcy May Marlene” spoke with MTV News about joining the cast of “Kill Your Darlings,” making her admiration for the “Harry Potter” star very well-known. “He is so phenomenal,” Olsen said at the Sundance Film Festival , where she’s repping the paranormal thriller “Red Lights.” “He’s an incredible person. He’s so funny and smart and fun. He’s such a good guy.” Olsen is just one small cog in the greater machine of “Kill Your Darlings,” according to the actress. She said she only appears in “three scenes of that movie” as Edie Parker, girlfriend of Jack Kerouac. “Edie Parker is the one who introduced Ginsberg to Lucien Carr and Jack Kerouac,” she explained of her role. “She’s kind of the glue between them. I’m just there for a few scenes to explain that part of the story. But her personal life is really, really incredible.” The 2012 Sundance Film Festival is officially under way, and the MTV Movies team is on the ground reporting on the hottest stars and the movies everyone will be talking about in the year to come. Bin Laden Movie Remains Top-Secret, Joel Edgerton Says

The actor also spoke with MTV News about the ‘very subtle’ use of 3-D in ‘The Great Gatsby.’ By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Joel Edgerton Photo: MTV News PARK CITY, Utah — Joel Edgerton could tell you about Kathryn Bigelow ‘s untitled Osama Bin Laden movie, but then he’d have to kill you. OK, perhaps it’s not as dramatic as all of that. Still, the “Wish You Were Here” actor spoke briefly with MTV News about starring in the Navy Seal thriller alongside Chris Pratt and Jessica Chastain , and while he’s “very excited” to start shooting the film, his lips are sealed on the top-secret op. “I can’t really tell you anything about it,” he told MTV during the Sundance Film Festival . “I don’t know that I can’t tell you anything about it, but I’d be very ill informed to talk about it at this point. But I’m just excited to work with all of those guys.” Edgerton was much more inclined to talk about “The Great Gatsby,” Baz Luhrmann ‘s upcoming adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic. The Australian actor, who stars in “Gatsby” as drunken socialite Tom Buchanan, spoke at length about Luhrmann’s “very subtle” use of 3-D in the film. “3-D is absolutely the right thing for [the film],” said Edgerton. “I’ve seen sections of the movie and it sort of invites you in. It’s not like spectacle 3-D; you’re not being confronted by things blowing at your head. But it invites you in. What it does psychologically is very interesting, and I think you’ll forget you’re watching 3-D.” “Also, it’s lavish,” he continued. “That era was so lavish. The ’20s was about excess, so why not add a bit of excess to the filmmaking as well?” For those who remain skeptical of the use of 3-D in “Gatsby,” Edgerton expects negative opinions to change when the movie is released this December. “Baz knows absolutely everything he’s doing,” he said. “I’m really excited for all the people [groaning] about 3-D to see the movie. I hope everybody is crossing their arms and frowning to begin with, because I think they’ll unfurl by the time they see it.” What do you think of the use of 3-D in “The Great Gatsby”? Nicholas Hoult Is ‘Beautiful’ In ‘Warm Bodies’

Teresa Palmer gushed to MTV News about her co-star’s zombie performance. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Teresa Palmer and Joel Edgerton Photo: MTV News If Hollywood can turn vampires and werewolves into sex icons, what’s keeping zombies from entering that same sexy stratosphere? Well, there’s the whole feasting-on-human-flesh thing to consider, we suppose, not to mention the endless groaning and decaying to boot. Despite their brain-craving reputation, the walking dead are about to undergo a serious makeover in “Warm Bodies,” director Jonathan Levine’s adaptation of the Isaac Marion novel set in a post-apocalyptic world where a zombie named R (played by “X-Men: First Class” actor Nicholas Hoult ) inexplicably falls in love with Julie Grigio, whose father is a general in the dwindling human resistance. Teresa Palmer , who plays Julie, spoke with MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival about her work on “Warm Bodies” and why she can’t wait to fall in love with a zombie on the big screen. “I’m just excited to see how Nicholas Hoult comes across on the screen,” said Palmer, who’s attending Sundance to support her drama “Wish You Were Here.” “He was so beautiful to work with. He does such an incredible performance. He’s playing a zombie, so he can’t say much, but he’s very expressive with his eyes.” It’s not just Hoult’s “beautiful” zombie performance that Palmer fell in love with, but the “Warm Zombies” universe as a whole. “The world that Jonathan Levine has set up is so epic and so interesting,” she said. “It’s always very cool when Jonathan Levine does something. I’m really excited to see it.” Are you excited to see zombie love story “Warm Bodies”? Let us know in the comments. Peter Jackson Explains ‘Hobbit’/’Lord Of The Rings’ Link

Director tells MTV News at Sundance how he plans to keep his latest journey to Middle-earth consistent with the ‘Rings’ trilogy. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Peter Jackson at the Sundance Film Festival on Friday Photo: MTV News PARK CITY, Utah — The first trailer for “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” made it quite clear that Middle-earth hasn’t changed much in the years since Peter Jackson concluded his “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. That’s not a complaint, mind you — fans have come to know and love Jackson’s interpretation of the J. R. R. Tolkien fantasy epic with the same passion they have for the source material. When it comes to “The Hobbit,” in other words, change is not necessarily welcome. Speaking with MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival , Jackson explained that it was always his intention to keep “The Hobbit” tonally and visually consistent with the “Lord of the Rings” films. “We wanted it to be a part of the five-film series,” he explained. “Fortunately, Tolkien wrote a lot of extra material in the appendices of ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ where he himself kind of tied the two stories together, 20 or 30 years after the publication of ‘The Hobbit.’ So we’ve been able to use some of that material.” But even though Jackson’s “Hobbit” isn’t “as much of a children’s story as the original book was,” he’s worked hard to make sure the films still “have some humor” to them. For example, Jackson promised that “some of the songs [from the novel] have made their way in there.” Fans can get their first taste of those tunes in the “Hobbit” trailer, when the dwarves gather in Bilbo Baggins’ humble abode to sing a somber song. Finding that balance between staying true to the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy while allowing the “Hobbit” films to stand on their own has been an enjoyable challenge for Jackson, who is more than thrilled to once again be dabbling in dwarves and dragons. “I’m enjoying the movie [as much as the fans], which is the thing that I’m really excited about,” he said. “I love going to work every day. I love shooting it. In February, we start another 100 days of shooting, so by about July, we’re done. We will have shot both movies by that stage.” “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” storms into theaters December 14.
