At NYFF: Martin Scorsese Gives Hometown Crowd a Taste of 3-D Hugo

After a weekend of speculation, guesses and second-guesses about which top-secret “work in progress by a master filmmaker” would in fact screen tonight as a last-minute addition to the New York Film Festival, Martin Scorsese confirmed today’s reports by taking the stage at Avery Fisher Hall in Manhattan and introducing his family-friendly 3-D opus Hugo to a loving hometown crowd.

Report: Martin Scorsese’s Hugo to Screen at NYFF

Our sister blog Deadline is reporting that the surprise sneak screening tonight at the New York Film Festival — showcasing a “work in progress from a master filmmaker” — will be Martin Scorsese’s Hugo . If true, it would be Scorsese’s second film to screen at this year’s NYFF (after George Harrison: Living in the Material World ) and a considerable risk for Paramount, which would be exhibiting the uncompleted 3-D film in one of the tougher filmgoing environments known to man. Movieline will be there in any case; check back with us later on for a report. [via @NikkiFinke ]

You Know What’s Awesome? This Poster for Shame

My first reaction to the new poster for Steve McQueen’s acclaimed drama Shame was natural, perhaps obvious: “But where’s Michael Fassbender?” The guy only ran away with the Venice Film Festival award for Best Actor and is on a track for serious contention in this year’s Oscar Index and is one of the brightest rising stars in all of cinema and makes women and men alike swoon with his bracing good looks. (To say nothing of similarly absentee co-star Carey Mulligan.) But that reaction seems forever ago, lodged in the hours since I haven’t been able to stop looking at it .

Sugar Ray Leonard on Real Steel, Life Behind the Scenes and the Problem With Boxing Today

You might not think that Real Steel , the sci-fi action flick about a washed-up boxer and the junkyard robot he trains toward a fictional fighting championship, would carry much boxing credibility. But that’s where Sugar Ray Leonard comes in. The Hall of Famer was recruited by director Shawn Levy to choreograph the robot fights and most importantly, to advise the filmmakers on how to establish a humanistic relationship between the movie’s beleaguered trainer (Hugh Jackman) and Atom, the robo-underdog he takes on, that audiences will want to root for.

Please Describe the My Week With Marilyn Trailer to Me

My Week With Marilyn screens this weekend as the Centerpiece selection of the New York Film Festival, and seeing as I have every intention of hauling my sleeping bag and lantern and Boggle game over and camping out overnight for a seat, there is no way I’m compromising a shred of my anticipation by watching Michelle Williams, Eddie Redmayne, Kenneth Branagh and the rest of the principals gathered in the film’s first trailer. But! That doesn’t mean I won’t read your inspired descriptions of what happens within.

10 Great Disney Images Worth Paying to See in 3-D

The Lion King 3D ‘s box-office success is admirable on its own, but Disney is looking to ramp up its output of 3-D reboots in a staggering way: Beauty and the Beast , The Little Mermaid , Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc. are all coming back to theaters in 3-D within the next two years.
