Adele Has ‘Trained Hard’ For MTV’s Musical March Madness

Our 2011 tournament begins March 14, but Adele is ready to go — even if she doesn’t like sports. By James Montgomery Adele Photo: Jon Furniss/Getty Images Last year, when the selection committee was assembling the field of bands for our inaugural Musical March Madness tournament, British belter Adele was left out — an omission that, at the time, seemed somewhat forgivable, considering she was basically off the grid, holed up in Malibu to begin work on the songs that would shape her chart-topping 21 album . Of course, this year, it would be close to blasphemy not to include Adele in the field of 64 acts that will compete for the MMM trophy . Not only has she conquered the world with 21, but she worked with Rick Rubin on the record, and that dude most certainly rocks, which makes her a shoo-in for the 2011 tourney. But, as we learned Monday, Adele will face a tough road to the championship. Rock titans Linkin Park have already promised to bring “total dominance” to the 2011 MMM tournament — we’ll unveil our entire championship bracket Monday, March 14 — and, as it turns out, Adele doesn’t seem to know the first thing about college basketball, which is where this entire idea came from in the first place. “I don’t like sports!” she laughed. Still, she’s willing to give it a try. So we asked her: Just how has she been preparing to take down the likes of Linkin Park in the 2011 Musical March Madness tourney? “I’ve trained really hard,” she explained. “I’ve worked really hard this whole season, leading up to the release of this record.” Of course, she followed that boast up with an uncontrollable fit of laughter, but it bears mention that, with an armload of Grammys , a #1 album and fervent fanbase on both sides of the Atlantic, Adele definitely has a shot at shocking the world this year, especially since fans determine all the winners in our tournament. And, really, if she does manage to come out on top, can you imagine what her acceptance speech would be like? MTV’s 2011 Musical March Madness Tournament begins Monday, March 14, when we reveal the full field of 64 bands that will battle for the championship. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM … but get ready, it’s gonna be a war. Related Videos MTV’s Musical March Madness Is Back For 2011

Dave Grohl Goes DIY Route For Foo Fighters’ ‘Rope’ Video

New clip premieres Thursday on MTV, with exclusive band Q&A to follow on MTV.com. By James Montgomery Dave Grohl in the Foo Fighters’ “Rope” video Photo: RCA By now, you’ve probably heard Dave Grohl sum up his directorial body of work as having “lots of hair” (while, at the same time, remaining strangely “waxed”). But despite that assessment — and his work on the Foos’ brand-new “Rope” video , which premieres Thursday at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on MTV and MTV.com — you’d probably be surprised to know that Grohl doesn’t really consider himself to be a director at all. “I’m not a director. I don’t even know how to use the equipment, but it’s fun to try,” he laughed. “[And these days] any kid can do exactly that and have a million people watch it. That’s awesome.” He’s talking, in part, about the video for “Rope,” but also his shot-on-VHS quickie clip for another Wasting Light song, “White Limo,” which was filmed in just six hours on an old handheld and has since gone on to eclipse the 1 million-view mark on YouTube. To Grohl, they’re basically the same thing: proof that, in this day and age, bands don’t have to break the bank to make a video. They just have to have a killer idea (and maybe a cameo by Lemmy too). “It’s nice now that there’s not as much importance put on videos as there was in the past. People used to spend, like, $5 million making a video. You think people do that now? They don’t,” Grohl said. “They get a VHS camera, and they make a video in six hours, and today, over 1 million people have watched ‘White Limo,’ the video we made with a VHS camera. And it’s cool. Anybody can do that. That’s f—ing rad.” The Foo Fighters’ “Rope” video premieres live at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on Thursday on MTV and MTV.com, followed by an exclusive Q&A session from one lucky Foo fan’s house to be live-streamed on MTV.com. Dave Grohl Says Foo Fighters’ ‘Rope’ Video Is ‘Claustrophobic’

New clip premieres on MTV on Thursday, with exclusive band Q&A to follow on MTV.com. By James Montgomery The Foo Fighters Photo: Steve Gullick Over the years, Dave Grohl has directed a handful of Foo Fighters videos — “My Hero,” “Monkey Wrench,” “All My Life” — and these generally fall under the category of “the ones where the bandmembers don’t wear funny disguises.” In fact, if there’s a unifying theme to his work, it’s probably that. But if you dig a bit deeper, you start to notice another similarity between Grohl’s videos: They’re all, on some level at least, performance clips. They’re artfully done, of course, but still feature the band doing what they do best: rocking hard. So, when it came time to direct the Foo Fighters’ brand-new video for “Rope” — which makes its world premiere Thursday at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on MTV — Grohl didn’t stray far from his tried-and-true formula. “I’ve made a couple Foo Fighters videos, and it’s easy for me to come up with a treatment or direct the band because I know what we’re like, and I know what we look like when we play. So most of the Foo Fighters videos that I’ve done have at least a little bit of performance in them,” he told MTV News. “Some of them are entirely performance-based, like the new one. The video for ‘Rope’ was meant to really just look like the band performing the song in a really tight, claustrophobic space, not unlike our rehearsal space. I think practicing in this little rehearsal space that we have really influenced that idea, and we actually set up just as we do in rehearsal for the video.” Of course, as “Rope” proves, even the simplest of concepts can pack a wallop. As Grohl said, there’s a creeping claustrophobia to the new video, a rapidly ratcheting sense that the walls are closing in … a feeling that’s echoed on the band’s upcoming Wasting Light album . This not only adds another level to the clip, but makes it a worthy addition to Grohl’s ever-growing, exceedingly hairy body of work, too. “I’d say my body of work is thin in places, and some places don’t have hair where there should be, and other places there’s, like, lots of hair. But it’s pretty nice,” he laughed. “It’ll get big, it’ll get smaller, it just depends. But I’m very proud of my body of work. Let’s just say it’s waxed.” The Foo Fighters’ ‘Rope’ video premieres live at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on Thursday on MTV and MTV.com, followed by an exclusive Q&A session from one lucky Foo fan’s house to be live-streamed on MTV.com. Foo Fighters Premiere High-Octane Single ‘Rope’

First release from Wasting Light is a definite departure, yet still remains true to their roots. By James Montgomery Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage On Wednesday (February 23), the Foo Fighters unveiled “Rope,” the proper first single off their upcoming Wasting Light album . And while it’s nowhere near as gnarly as “White Limo” — the snarling promo clip they foisted on fans earlier this month (complete with an awesome VHS-filmed, Lemmy-infused video — it’s most certainly a lumbering beast in its own right. Starting out with spacey, spare chords, “Rope” (which will be available for download on March 1) doesn’t take long to shift into high gear, switching into a thundering, twisting series of interlocking riffs, breakneck drumming, stop-start time signatures, and, of course, an absolute earworm of a chorus, a characteristic that has become the Foo’s calling card. “Gimme some rope, I’m coming loose, I’m hanging on you,” Dave Grohl sings, over a bed of roiling guitars. “Give me some rope, I’m coming loose, I’m pulling for you now.” It all builds to a high-octane conclusion, with chords crashing and a skuzzy guitar solo unspooling above the din. There are, of course, nods to the proggy rock of Rush (the Foo Fighers are nothing if not traditionalists), but for the most part, “Rope” seems to keep with the spirit of what producer Butch Vig told MTV News back in January about Wasting Light, (due April 12) which he described as “primal” and “raw.” The guitars are fuzzy and crushing, Taylor Hawkins drumming is loose and fluid (even on the breakdown) and Grohl, well, he certainly yowls. It’s a gut-punch of frazzled guitars and stuttering tempos. At the same time, it feels right at home in the Foo Fighters’ canon, thanks in no small part to that hooky chorus. They may have gone back to the garage to make Wasting Light, but they certainly haven’t forgotten what got them to this point, either. Related Artists Foo Fighters

Dave Grohl Talks Reuniting With Nirvana Bandmate, Producer

‘It sounded great and it felt natural,’ he tells MTV News of teaming up with Krist Novoselic and Butch Vig for Foo Fighters LP. By Aly Semigran, with reporting by James Montgomery Dave Grohl Photo: MTV News It was a moment any hard-core Nirvana fan would have loved to be a fly on the wall for. While recording the upcoming Foo Fighters album , a hard-rocking, back-to-basics record titled Wasting Light, Dave Grohl reunited with his former Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic and Butch Vig, the producer of their incomparable Nevermind. Vig is once again working as Grohl’s producer on the upcoming Foo effort, while Novoselic appears on a track called “I Should Have Known.” At music executive Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party this weekend, MTV News asked Grohl what it was like to reconnect with Vig and Novoselic, two men who significantly impacted both his professional and personal life. “The three of us haven’t been in a studio together since 1991,” Grohl revealed. And in spite of the years apart, the trio easily found their rhythm again as they recorded in Grohl’s home studio. “Musically, it sounded great and it felt natural,” Grohl added. But the Foo Fighters frontman said it wasn’t so much their enduring chemistry that he was moved by as the chance to revisit relationships that now span more than two decades. “As friends, that’s a real connection,” Grohl told us. “It had more to do with us as people than even the record.” When asked if they felt nostalgic during the recording process, Grohl replied with a smile, “Too much. We didn’t have enough time.” Just last month, MTV News caught up with Vig to discuss the venture with Grohl and Novoselic, and he shared similar sentiments about working with his buddies again. “When Krist came up to Dave’s house, we sort of sat down and it was like, ‘Holy sh–, man, we hadn’t been in a room together — the three of us — in almost 20 years,” he said. After recording Novoselic’s portions of “I Should Have Known” — Vig described the song as “an emotional roller coaster” — the producer and his old friends made the best of lost time. “We just sat around and shot the sh– for three or four hours,” Vig recalled. “One story would lead to another story, and it was an amazing experience, just to be there, to open up all these things you may have forgotten about. It was really a pretty special part of the album.” Wasting Light is set to be released on April 12. What do you think the new Foo Fighters album will sound like? Tell us in the comments! UN Peacekeepers Trying To Head Off Christmas Massacre In Congo (Over Blood Minerals For Consumer Goods)

The United Nations has ordered 900 peacekeepers to a remote region of Democratic Republic of Congo, where the LRA killed more than 1,000 adults and children around Christmas in 2008 and 2009 and kidnapped hundreds more, to head off feared Christmas attacks by Lord's Resistance Army fighters. ===== report ============== UNITED NATIONS — The United Nations has ordered 900 peacekeepers to a remote region of Democratic Republic of Congo, to head off feared Christmas attacks by Lord's Resistance Army fighters, a spokesman said Tuesday. UN forces will go to a region where the LRA killed more than 1,000 adults and children around Christmas in 2008 and 2009 and kidnapped hundreds more. The UN mission in DR Congo is also sending extra humanitarian supplies to the region, UN spokesman Martin Nesirky told reporters. A special operation against the LRA has been launched in the Dungu district of Upper Uele region and would carry on until mid-January because of fears of the “holiday season” attacks, Nesirky said. The announcement came after the UN Security Council called for greater international action against the LRA, which is led by Joseph Kony who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity. The LRA sprang out of a rebellion in Uganda in the 1980s but now terrorizes communities in Central African Republic, southern Sudan and DR Congo. The Security Council welcomed an African Union move to set up a joint task force to fight the LRA and deploy joint border patrols. “It calls for the countries of the region to enhance coordination and information sharing regarding the the threat posed by the LRA,” said a Security Council statement on efforts to bring peace to Central African Republic. Ugandan special forces currently lead the international hunt for Kony, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity. In December 2008, LRA fighters killed 865 men, women and children in the northeastern DR Congo and in southern Sudan, and kidnapped hundreds of others. A year later 300 people were murdered between December 14 and 17, also in northeast DR Congo. The United States has promised to support a new effort to catch Kony and halt the conflict generated by the LRA, but in a report titled “Ghosts of Christmas Past,” 19 aid agencies said the Security Council should do more. The report said LRA attacks remote communities in Sudan, Central African Republic and DR Congo almost four times a week. “These communities await Christmas with fear,” added the groups, who include Oxfam, Christian Aid, Refugees International, World Vision and War Child UK, among others. The UN refugee agency said in October that the rebels had killed 2,000 people since December 2008, kidnapped more than 2,600 and displaced more than 400,000 in DR Congo, the Central African Republic and southern Sudan. “The acute suffering and mass population displacement the LRA has generated across international borders is undermining stability in an already fragile region, where southern Sudan is preparing to hold a landmark referendum on secession in early 2011,” the report said. The aid groups welcomed recent steps by the United States and the African Union. But it said kidnapped people had to be helped to return home and villages had to be protected. The aid groups called on the UN Security Council to set up an expert panel as “there is a chronic lack of information about the motivation, composition and location of the LRA.” The LRA began their rebellion in northern Uganda in the late 1980s, but have not carried out an attack there since 2006. Since south Sudanese-hosted peace talks broke down in 2008, the fighters have roamed the jungles of central Africa and been repeatedly blamed for the slaughter of defenseless civilians. The African Union has said the LRA should be called “terrorists” rather than rebels. ############# ARTICLE LINK ############# UN peacekeepers to head off Christmas massacre http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5iduTBApHLCmGUF9clnqdrlk-L8TQ?… (AFP) – Dec 13, 2010 added by: twohawks
