‘Detective Pikachu’ Is The Live-Action Film That Every Pokémon Fan Dreamed Of

Source: Warner Bros. / Warner Bros. Live-action films are very much a thing now, but very few of them are as highly anticipated as Detective Pikachu. The long overdue Pokemon adventure hits theaters this May, and we got a chance to visit the set of the Rob Letterman directed flick. Ryan Reynolds stars as the infamous pocket monster, Pikachu, whose CGI form looks amazingly realistic yet light and cartoonish at the same time. Justice Smith also stars in the film as as Tim Goodman, a former Pokémon trainer looking for his missing father. Goodman is also Detective Pikachu’s partner, and the only person that can hear hear him speak. We spoke to Justice on the London, England set of DP and he dished more on what is was like having an animated co-star and how much he enjoyed working with Ryan Reynolds. “Ryan is awesome, he’s hilarious. So, we basically went through the whole film with Ryan on a soundstage, with Ryan in a motion-capture helmet. And, so I got to see how he improvised, what he was gonna do, what he was gonna say, how he was gonna act. And then we have a reader who reads Ryan’s lines, but I essentially have to remember what Ryan did on the day. And then do my side of it, when we’re shooting.” Source: Warner Bros. / Warner Bros. “Things change around, and they’re gonna fix some stuff in post with Ryan, but for the most part it comes down to memory. We also recorded the tape so I can listen to them back, and remember what he did. But it’s just the whole team trying to work together, and they have been. It’s a really difficult beast. But it was insane. I can’t even explain it. It’s my childhood dream come true” Speaking of the set —production designer Nigel Phelps brought the Pokemon Universe to life in ways that will your mind when you see the film. According to Phelps, he made it a point to not borrow  architecture or inspiration from any of the fictional cities in the 2016 Japanese video from whence the film was based on. Instead, he opted for more realistic details, such as tall skyscrapers and underground fight clubs, that makes the viewer feel like the Pokemon Universe is an actual place on the planet. “We’re trying to make a very realistic film, albeit with the most strange cast of characters that make it very unworldly. We’re trying to create a world where, in the fantastic beasts sense of the word, we’ve got a very realistic environment, where these amazing creatures can exist in a believable fashion.” Source: Warner Bros. / Warner Bros. “The color patterns have been quite neutral, so lots of grays and blacks and whites, to help offset the very, the pattern of colors that all the creatures have. And a lot of them are really tiny as well, so it got right down with all the floors and a lot of the ground surfaces, so that you get, any color that we have on the light stuff is reflected on the floor. All the streets and the exterior stuff is in and around the city of London and Shoreditch.” The fashion in the film is pretty next level, too!  One of the scenes fight club moment in the Pokemon Battle Arena a.k.a Rhyme City (ran by Charizard’s owner Sebastian)  aesthetically called for very grungy yet kitchy vibes. Costume Designer Susie Harmon told us, “It’s very, probably the most creative out-there look. Some punk meets goth meets Tokyo street fashion; anything basically. RnB, you name it. Everything just mashed up together, underground fight club basically. Did a lot of research in the anime, to get a sense of what the key looks were.” “Especially for the lead actors, just to give it a grounded but that slight cartoony feel about it. Just to give it the silhouette and how the guys tend to wear their clothes in the anime, and the women, with those lovely little skirts, and the hair. So yeah, definitely to get a sense of fully anime, rather than the games.” Earlier this month, it was announced that Detective Pikachu will also be adapted into a graphic novel . According to Legendary Comics, an official movie graphic novel titled POKÉMON Detective Pikachu will debut online and in stores in summer 2019, following the film’s release. There’s also a sequel to the 2019 film already in the works. Detective Pikachu will definitely make all of your nostalgic, 90’s, Pokemon dreams come.  Don’t miss out on the live-action when hits theaters on May 10.

Paris Jackson: Family "Fears She Has Relapsed," Source Claims

In the weeks since Leaving Neverland debuted on HBO, it seems not a day has gone by witbout a new report about Paris Jackson’s alleged “meltdown.” The film, as you likely know, contains shocking new information about the child molestation allegations against Paris’ father, michael Jackson. Insiders say Paris does not believe the accusers , and though she has refused to watch the documentary, she remains convinced of her father’s innocence and deeply distraught about the latest threat to his legacy. Obviously, no one wants to hear such appalling allegations about someone they hold dear, but Paris’ decision to treat the situation as a joke has not sat well with many, including some former fans. Sources say Paris is concerned that Neverland might derail her career . But ironically, it’s her reaction to the documentary — and not the film itself — that’s generating the most negative coverage. But regardless of one’s opinion of her handling of the situation, we can all agrree that if there’s any accuracy to latest rumors about Paris’ mental state then the 20-year-old is in desperate need of some compassion and assistance. First, Paris smoked pot in an Instagram video , despite the fact that she’s fresh from rehab and is a member of AA (an organization that strongly discourages the use of any mind-altering substances). Shortly thereafter, Paris was spotted drinking heavily and arguing with her boyfriend during a night out in New Orleans. Now, a new report from Radar Online indicates that Paris’ family is deeply concerned that she’s fallen back into her old ways. “Everyone fears that she has relapsed, and it is a dangerous situation,” one insider tells the site. The situation has reportedly become so dire that the rest of the family is refusing to update Paris’ grandmother, Katherine Jackson, for fear the situation will exacerbate the matriarch’s existing health issues. “The whole family fears that Paris is not okay,” says the source.  “They are doing their best to shield Katherine from her because they do not want this to send her to her grave.” The insider adds: “Paris’ grandmother is super-stressed over behavior.” The source claims that Paris has been “out of control” in recent weeks, but the model and aspiring singer insists that there’s no cause for concern. “Paris says she is fine,” the informant says. “She’s making excuses,” he adds. Here’s hoping Paris is able to find whatever kind of help she needs during this difficult time. View Slideshow: Leaving Neverland: Michael Jackson Victims Reveal Sickening New Allegations

Anatomy of a Scene's Anatomy: 'Showgirls' and the Dangers of High Camp

Enough time has passed since the release of Paul Verhoeven’s Showgirls that the film can finally be recognized for its achievements in the realm of high camp. It wasn’t always that way, though, and for many fans of the film, it still hasn’t earned enough respect for the pitch black and biting satire it reserves for the male-dominated entertainment industry…. read more

Oprah: Attacked By Michael Jackson Fans Following Leaving Neverland Special

As you’ve likely heard by now, this week saw the premiere of the controversial documentary Leaving Neverland on HBO. The film has left countless viewers scandalized, and many say it left them with no doubt that Michael Jackson is guilty of child molestation.  Of course, as is usually the case with decades-old controversies, there are vehement believers on both sides of the argument. The Jackson family has decried the film as an act of ” public lynching ,” and an attempt to denigrate a man who’s no longer alive to defend himself. Around the world, protesters have gathered at screenings of the film to show their support for Jackson and loudly declare their belief in the late music legend’s innocence. The debate has mostly involved those who believe Jackson’s accusers and the much smaller group who maintains that the pop star is innocent. But one of the world’s most famous people has found herself unexpectedly caught in the middle. Following Monday night’s conclusion of the two-part docuseries, HBO aired a follow-up special entitled Oprah Winfrey Presents: After Neverland . The goal of the broadcast was to shed light on the accusations against Jackson through interviews with two of his alleged victims. It was also part of an effort to provide support for those whose lives have been touched by abuse and who may have been triggered by the revelations contained in Leaving Neverland . Oprah is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, and she presented the facts of the Jackson case in a clear and level-headed fashion. Nevertheless, she now finds herself the victim of a targeted harassment campaign spearheaded by Jackson defenders. Multiple outlets are reporting today that Winfrey has received death threats, and the insults hurled at the media icon in online discussion forums are truly nauseating. The situation is made even more appalling by the fact that Oprah has been an outspoken advocate for child abuse survivors throughout her life. “It happened to me at 9, and then 10, and then 11, and then 12, 13, 14. You don’t have the language to begin to explain what’s happening to you,” Oprah told People magazine last year. “That’s why you feel you’re not going to be believed. And if the abuser, the molester, is any good, they will make you feel that you are complicit, that you were part of it,” she added. “That’s what keeps you from telling.” To our minds, the things that Jackson confessed to during the various investigations into his alleged sex crimes are enough to render him forever indefensible. But the fact that those who choose to defend him are now attacking survivors of child sexual trauma has brought this already ugly situation to a new depth. Fortunately, brave souls such as Wade Robson, James Safechuck, and Oprah Winfrey will not be intimidated into silence. Michael Jackson’s Daughter Is Standing By Her Father, Despite Allegations

“L eaving Neverland ” premiered Sunday and Monday on HBO. The documentary about child abuse allegations against Michael Jackson has caused many people to question the future of the King of Pop’s legacy. However, Paris Jackson , 20, is standing by her dad. See Also:  ‘I Thought It Was A Hoax’: Sparkle Talks R. Kelly’s Marriage To Aaliyah Paris Jackson said she he has not seen the documentary and “was not offered the chance to see it before it premiered at Sundance,” TMZ reported. Nonetheless, she “firmly believes” Michael Jackson was not a pedophile. In 1993, Michael Jackson was accused of molesting a 13-year-old boy. In January of 1994, he reportedly settled for $23 million. The accuser’s father committed suicide in 2009, five months after the singer died. Jordan Chandler reportedly has never come forward about the allegations and supposedly lives outside of the country. In 2017, when Wade Robson, a choreographer who is featured in “Leaving Neverland,” accused Michael Jackson of sexual assault—even though he’d said in the past the singer didn’t assault him—there was a hunt to find Chandler. According to The Daily Mail , he left the U.S. to avoid investigators. In 2003, Michael Jackson was charged with seven counts of child molestation and two counts of administering an intoxicating agent to a 13-year-old boy. He was ultimately acquitted of all charges. Robson testified at the 2003 trial, but James Safechuck , the other person featured in “Leaving Neverland,” did not. Many people have been saying the documentary is untrue, including Brett Barnes , who said he knew Michael Jackson when he was child. According to TMZ , the film “implies Jackson molested him as a boy. As for why Barnes thinks this … Wade Robson — one of the singer’s well-known alleged victims — claims in the doc, Barnes ‘replaced him.’ The film then shows Michael and Brett together on tour. Thus, the insinuation.” Barnes has threatened HBO with a lawsuit “claiming the documentary puts him in a false light and subjects him to ‘hatred, contempt and ridicule.’ Presumably, the lawyer is saying MJ supporters will target Barnes as a result of the documentary.” Barnes testified at Michael Jackson’s criminal trial in 2005 and said he was never assaulted by him. He also tweeted this in January. Not only do we have to deal with these lies, but we’ve also got to deal with people perpetuating these lies. The fact that they fail to do the small amount of research it takes to prove these are lies, by choice or not, makes it even worse. — Brett Barnes (@IAmBrettBarnes) January 30, 2019 Michael Jackson was acquitted of all charges. The Reviews For ‘Captain Marvel’ Are In, And They’re All Over The Place

Source: Albert L. Ortega / Getty On Monday night, cast members and plenty of other important people were in attendance for the world premiere of Marvel’s latest highly-anticipated project, Captain Marvel . The event was absolutely major and also happened to be the first of these events helmed by a woman, making the stakes even higher. Brie Larson got huge applause when introducing the film at the Dolby Theatre, summing up the special moment by admitting, “I’m crying a lot today.”  Roughly 100 members of the Air Force were met with a standing ovation after their jets had flown over Hollywood Blvd. to kick off the event just a few hours earlier. Captain Marvel  is expected to open somewhere in the $125 million range this weekend, which is definitely something for the studio to boast about. But even before its release, the movie has been met with its fair share of criticism–mostly consisting of some angry white men being upset over Brie Larson’s comments about diversity . Now, following the film’s premiere last night, some not-so-rave reviews have hit the web juxtaposed by others who have been praising the movie endlessly. So who are we to believe in a world full of conflicting opinions? Well, the obvious answer is to just see the movie for yourself, but we’re in the age of instant gratification. While we wait for the regular folk release of Captain Marvel on Friday, let’s take a look at what some people who already saw the film are saying about it–but don’t worry, no spoilers here. A lot of the reviews make mention of DC’s “feminist hero” film, Wonder Woman–which isn’t surprising, considering we’re talking about the two major comic book film studios and their attempts at women-leading projects. “DC did it better. In fact I'd argue Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman was more charismatic than Brie Larson as #CaptainMarvel . I mean Wonder Woman was THE feminist hero. Entertaining movie and she was in fact powerful.” – Jeremy Jahns — Kiev, Ukraine (@Barbaric_K) March 5, 2019 #CaptainMarvel Who could have predicted this? Just re watch Wonder Woman instead. pic.twitter.com/EHk5vEAq3y — Steve Gal (@EvolutionRaven) March 5, 2019 It is weird to see almost the exact same reaction towards #CaptainMarvel that #WonderWoman got shortly before its release, it's almost a carbon copy situation — Joseph Aberl (@WatchmenArchive) March 5, 2019 But while some are caught up in those comparisons, other critics genuinely enjoyed the film and what it brings to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The wait is over! #CaptainMarvel is here and it does not disappoint. https://t.co/OQSNM6XWoo — Entertainment Tonight (@etnow) March 5, 2019 Entertainment Tonight calls Captain Marvel “an Avenger origin story like no other,” before summing up the film-watching experience, saying, “above all else,  Captain Marvel  is  fun , in a way that superhero movies sometimes forget to be — packed with rat-a-tat banter and  Star Wars -worthy dog fights.” The people over at Variety and LA Times seem to like the movie, too. #CaptainMarvel review: “Brie Larson radiates an ability that too many comic-book heroes never get the chance to show: the superpower of expression” https://t.co/OQXY2wQtSd pic.twitter.com/dDTsAFRp8g — Variety (@Variety) March 5, 2019 Review: #CaptainMarvel and Brie Larson boost the MCU to even greater heights https://t.co/Kgx4EKuA9C pic.twitter.com/IWs0SQ4uNL — LAT Entertainment (@latimesent) March 5, 2019 But even with these positive reviews comes a little skepticism, with some people around the web thinking some of these critics are being paid to keep things positive and are making excuses for certain details in the movie. Stop giving excuses. Just say #CaptainMarvel was terrible and you hated it. Or if you loved it tell that. All the reviewers are contradicting themselves in their reviews. Let go of the Mouse — Haroon Shareef (@BatsWrite) March 5, 2019 When you have to praise formula, half of those reviews would be considered as rotten for other movies. When movie is that bad you have to praise the cat… Paid reviews at work. #CaptainMarvel pic.twitter.com/5mqfsu5eEP — PartizanNiksic (@Partizan_Niksic) March 5, 2019 You really can’t win. The moral of the story here? Just see the movie for yourself and form your own opinion. If anything, seeing so many contradicting reviews will just make people more eager to see the film to find out what all the fuss is about.
