Queen Of The Screen: Ruth E. Carter Is The Academy Award Nominated Costume Designer Behind Your Favorite Films’ Winning Wardrobes

Source: Amy Sussman/ Getty Images for CDGA / Getty Ruth E. Carter Nominated For Best Costume Design At Academy Awards This Black History Month we have been sharing stories of notable black women worthy of so much love and recognition and costume designer Ruth E. Carter definitely fits the bill! Carter is currently nominated for the Best Costume Design award at this Sunday’s Academy Awards for the work she accomplished with ‘Black Panther’ . This is actually her third nomination (her first was in 1993 for her work on Spike Lee’s Malcolm X). Source: Stefanie Keenan/ Getty Images for CDGA / Getty Carter was also honored with the career achievement award Tuesday night at the Costume Designers Guild Awards. Judith Light, Halle Berry and Danai Gurira were there to present her. “Some of your peers get awards all the time or are at the top of the heap, and you’re trying to climb your way up. You wonder what they think of you and your films. You wonder if they’ve been watching,” Carter said in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter about the honor. “So that’s, to me, the affirming award that says ‘We love you.’” Source: Stefanie Keenan/ Getty Images for CDGA / Getty Carter told HR the best recognition she could receive is from the kids who proudly sported Black Panther costumes last Halloween, after years of America prioritizing Superman, Batman and Spiderman. “When we designed a superhero that was a black man and a kingdom that was in Africa, it took those children to a place where they could claim and they could fly. And it’s the best honor anybody could ever be bestowed,” Carter says. “They knew the spirit and they all secretly hoped some of the Black Panther power would be bestowed on them just by wearing the clothes. … They were so ready for it. We knew they were ready for it. And we gave it to them.” She added that catering to Marvel fans has raised the bar for her work: “I was working for Marvel, I was like ‘Oh my God, I’ve got fans to answer to.’” Hit the flip for more details about Ruth E. Carter including what’s next for her.

Farrah Abraham: Here’s Why She Could Be Headed to Jail

Farrah Abraham isn't, like, a good person or anything. It's pretty much what she's built her entire empire on. Lots of girls become teen mothers, and sure, only a very small handful got their own reallity show on MTV. But Farrah made herself memorable, even out of that small group, by being rude and obnoxious and awful. She's no longer on Teen Mom OG, of course, but she's still out in the world, doing her thing and showing no emotional growth whatsoever. And that last part, the part about no emotional growth? That's why she could be going to jail very, very soon. 1. LOCK HER UP As you may remember, Farrah got arrested last summer after causing quite the scene at a hotel in Beverly Hills. 2. Setting the Scene She and her daughter, Sophia, were staying at the hotel, and while Sophia was sleeping in their room upstairs, Farrah thought it would be a good idea to hang out in the lounge and cause a scene. 3. Makes Sense She got into an argument with other hotel guests — several witnesses said that she seemed very intoxicated — and when a security guard came to handle the situation, she assaulted him. 4. Girl, Stop She hit his face with her forearm, and then she grabbed his head in her hands and shook it, which, you know … you can’t do that. 5. Ugh And then when police responded to arrest her, because of the assault, she threw out some “go f-ck yourselves” and “don’t you know who I am?!” nonsense. And, again, you can’t do that. 6. Good Riddance So she spent the night in jail, and wasn’t released until the next afternoon. But that was just the beginning of this saga. View Slideshow

Miley Cyrus Shares NEW Wedding Photos For Valentine’s Day!

Miley Cyrus celebrated her first Valentine’s Day as a married woman and she gave us something way better than chocolate or flowers. More wedding photos!!  The singer took to Instagram to express her love for new husband Liam Hemsworth. And there’s a lot of love.  In honor of their first Valentine’s Day together, the singer shared several never-before-seen photos to her social media accounts on Thursday from her and Hemsworth’s wedding.  Which was an intimate and secret ceremony that was held at Cyrus’ home in Tennessee on December 23, 2018.  “My Valentine every single day,” she captioned the first image, which shows Liam with his eyes closed and her with her mouth wide open.  Typical.  In another, Cyrus thanked her 6 foot 3 husband for “always bending down” to hug her. She then promised to always meet him “in the middle” on her “tippiest toes.” “I love you Valentine!” She wrote.  And while we love getting a glimpse at their adorable faces, we want more!!  And she provided.  Sharing an enchanting photo of their simple wedding cake, which Hemsworth can be seen smiling behind.  The next three photos were solo shots of Miley in her striking off-the-shoulder Vivienne Westwood wedding gown.  Two of the photos also showed off her delicate wedding bouquet which consisted of white and pale-colored flowers. But before the singer released the photos from her special day, she shared something else that offered, well a little less taste.  The 26-year-old shared an extremely cheeky snapshot to Twitter and her Instagram story from her Bangerz tour , which showed her legs raised in the air as she wore a high-cut bodysuit. To which she captioned “When it’s valentine’s day and bae says hi.”  Don’t worry, she tagged Liam’s Instagram so he knew he was the intended recipient of the strange Valentine and writing, “Love you.”  Over the weekend the Australian actor was briefly hospitalized for kidney stones and had to miss his  Isn’t it Romantic premiere.  Miley attended the film’s event for her beau, even posing for photos on the red carpet alone and with Rebel Wilson. A source told People on Tuesday that although Liam was hospitalized, “he was at home resting and will be fine.” In another Instagram post, Miley left a flirty message for Hemsworth while posing in front of a photo featuring him playing a saxophone.  Which is something he does at the end of the rom-com satire.  “Getting sick blows. But so do I. Get well soon babe. I love you,” she wrote. “Play that sax you sexy f -.” which followed with heart and kissing emojis.  Liam issued a statement on his Instagram account after the premiere, as well, where he apologized for missing the event . He also gave a shout-out to his wife. “Sorry I couldn’t make it to the @isntitromantic premier tonight guys. Been dealing with some pretty annoying health stuff the last couple days,” explained the actor.  “Lucky I have the best girl in the world to represent for me! Thanks for the support babe!” Hemsworth added. “I hope everyone enjoys the movie! It’s a perfect Valentine’s day flick so if ya ain’t got nothin better to do then go see it!” Hopefully, he was feeling better in time for his own special Valentine’s Day with his perfect WIFEY.  We’re still not over it.  View Slideshow: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth: Relive the Romance!

Mo’Nique To Steve Harvey: I Will Punch You!

Things got seriously heated during  Mo’Nique and Steve Harvey’s highly anticipated interview  on Wednesday.  News quickly spread that the actress actually “slapped” Steve in the face.  And while that rumor was wrong, it wasn’t far fetched.  During an all-new Steve , the talk show host invited his long-time friend onto the show to address some negative headlines.   Mo’Nique and Steve went head-to-head on the comedienne’s comments over Oprah, Lee Daniels and Tyler Perry.  And according to HollywoodLife , “Mo goes as far to say she was getting ready to punch Steve in the mouth.” The two’s debate intensified over her comments about being “blackballed” from movies and how she even told Daniels, Perry and Oprah to “suck my d***” during a stand-up show.  I’m sorry, but how do you say such things about Oprah and not expect to get excluded from the film industry?  That rowdy behavior may get you a rose on The Bachelor, but not a lead role in a movie.  Steve gets right to it and asks: “You started getting labeled as difficult, why do you believe that happened and do you see that changing and why?” She replies, “I said no to some very powerful people.”  The Oscar-winner then went on to say she didn’t appreciate Steve’s handling of the situation after news broke that she was “blackballed from the industry.”  She said she was incredibly hurt when Steve reportedly said: “My sister burnt too many bridges and there’s nothing I can do for her now.”  The TV host assured her and said he understands her anger towards his statement but also thought she “went about it all wrong.” “We can’t cure darkness with more darkness,” he said to her.  Over the years, Mo has claimed that she was blackballed by Hollywood after refusing to promote her film Precious without additional pay and she argued that some big names attempted to silence her during her pursuit of equality.  Their tempered talk finally turned into a real conversation as Steve apologized for not calling her the moment he heard about the news. “Here is what I want you to understand, as we try to come through this, I know who you really are, I want you to come through this,” the host said. “I love you like a sister, I hate what is happening to you. I want them to know you are caring, a great mother, you are an incredible mother,” he continued, holding her hand and looking into her eyes.  “I don’t like the fact that you’ve been blackballed…I want this to end for you. Because I love you. Because these people are doing it the wrong way and you’re better than that. “I probably should’ve called you as soon as it happened, but I didn’t. When I did, I listened to you, but I told you, in the beginning, we’re going about this the wrong way.”  He summed up the issue by telling Mo’Nique that those people owe her an apology, but that she also owes them an apology.  Steve also revealed that he would facilitate the conversation, bringing in all parties involved for a private (but probably not) open discussion.  And their talk resolved with a promise that Steve will get her the release she desperately needs.

Paris Jackson Celebrates 30 Days of Sobriety Amid Controversy Over Michael Jackson Sex Crimes

It’s a strange time in the life of Paris Jackson. Paris checked into rehab  last month, possibly in anticipation of the pressure she would feel in response to a scathing new documentary about her father that had yet to be released at that time. Leaving Neverland made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January.  The Jackson family has described the film as a ” public lynching ,” arguing that it serves no purpose other than denigrating a man who’s no longer alive to defend himself. Proponents of the film say it gives Jackson’s many victims a long overdue opportunity to tell their story. Most of the public has yet to see the piece for themselves (It makes its TV debut on HBO in March.), so it’s hard to make a determination as to whether it’s an opportunistic hit piece or essential of journalism that sheds new light on an old scandal. Whatever the case, it’s not hard to see how the release of the documentary could take a profound emotional toll on Paris, who has maintained throughout her life that her father is an innocent victim of a malicious slander campaign. Those closest to the aspiring model say that Paris is breaking down over the new allegations against her father and has thus far refused to watch Leaving Neverland. Fortunately, there’s a silver lining to Paris’ current struggles. It seems that she wrongly believed she could safely delve back into drinking and recreational drug use after a previous bout with addiction, and her latest rehab stint convinced her otherwise. “Paris has actually gotten clean for the time being,” a source close to the situation tells Radar Online. The insider adds that Paris’ new boyfriend, Gabriel Glenn , has been instrumental in her recovery. “Paris is coming up on 30 days off other substances,” the source added. “She’s is getting a ton of support from Gabriel.” Hopefully, Paris can maintain her commitment to the hard work of sobriety even in the face of new information about her father’s controversial private life. It won’t be easy — but then again, it never is. We wish her all the best in her continued recovery.

The Saga Continues: According To Dwayne Johnson, He Was The Oscars’ First Choice For A Host

Source: Patricia Schlein/WENN.com / WENN Dwayne Johnson Was Supposed To Host The Oscars This Year Oscar-Gate 2k18 was just as exhausting for all of us as it was for Kevin Hart, but now, it looks like there’s even more information we need to make the story complete. It looks like the first choice for this year’s Oscar’s ceremony was actually Dwayne Johnson , well, according to Dwayne Johnson. In response to someone bringing up his name as a “great host” for next year’s ceremony, The Rock revealed that that exact plan was actually in the works for this year, but prior commitments ended up getting in the way; Turns out, the actor couldn’t take the gig because he would be too busy working on the sequel to  Jumanji . “I was their first choice to host this year, and my goal was to make it the most fun and entertaining Oscars ever,” Johnson revealed. “We all tried hard, but couldn’t make it work since I’m shooting  Jumanji . Academy and I were super bummed but maybe one day down the road.” Ah mahalo dude, I was their first choice to host this year, and my goal was to make it the most fun and entertaining Oscars ever. We all tried hard, but couldn’t make it work since I’m shooting Jumanji. Academy and I were super bummed but maybe one day down the road https://t.co/eiiMuBNOzb — Dwayne Johnson (@TheRock) February 6, 2019 It’s pretty interesting that The Rock has to drop out of hosting duties due to Jumanji commitments, especially because Kevin Hart stars in the film with him. Though we all know how Kevin’s relationship with The Oscars ended up–how was he to fit in those same hosting duties while also filming for the Jumanji sequel? Questions that need answers… With both Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart out of the running for host, The 91st Academy Awards will be hostless and is set to take place on Sunday, Feb 24 at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

Meet the first all-black women’s rowing team to cross the Atlantic Ocean. https://t.co/BHM4a2X4aN — Black Enterprise (@blackenterprise) February 1, 2019 The women—dubbed Team Antigua-The Island Girls—competed in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. The competition is a premier event in ocean rowing. The team—which included Kevinia Francis , Christal Clashing , Elvira Bell , and Samara Emmanuel —embarked on their journey on December 12 in the Canary Islands and returned to Antigua at the end of January. Their journey was nothing short of grueling but the women pushed through and persevered. The entire trip was a total of 3,000 miles and they dealt with sea sickness and complications with their boat. Each woman brought their vast athletic experience to the competition. Francis was known for playing a handful of sports including track-and-field, basketball and cycling, Clashing is a former Olympian who became the first woman swimmer to represent Antigua and Barbuda at the Olympics, Bell is a swim instructor, and Emmanuel’s experience as a sailor spans over a decade. Junella King —a 17-year-old who served as an alternate for the team—worked as a sailing instructor. The competition was about more than rowing, the focus was on social good as well. The team competed to raise $150,000 for a charity called Cottage of Hope which focuses on providing shelter for orphaned girls who experience abuse. The women received a warm welcome home, as the government closed schools and other institutions early so that locals could congratulate the team. “While this is the third time a team from Antigua and Barbuda has entered the Challenge, we are truly proud that the first all-black female team to row the Atlantic is comprised of four courageous Antiguan women,” Charles Fernandez , Antigua and Barbuda Minister of Tourism, told Caribbean Life News . “This is history in the making, and it will truly be a momentous occasion for Antigua and Barbuda.” SEE ALSO: Hampton University Becomes First HBCU To Have Women’s Triathlon Team Tennis Star Naomi Osaka Slated To Ink Adidas’ Biggest Deal With A Woman Athlete [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3845042″ overlay=”true”]

B lack directors are making power moves in the entertainment industry. Many of them are racking up accolades for their work while breaking down racial barriers in an effort to ensure that the next generation of Black filmmakers have a seat at the table. Chukwu’s film —which stars Alfre Woodard , Danielle Brooks , Wendell Pierce , and Aldis Hodge —is centered on a prison warden who has to carry out death row executions. The film explores how doing the executions has a psychological impact. Chukwu, who wrote and directed the film, is humbled by the honor. “When everybody was saying ‘No’ this story does not have an audience, you, Sundance and the people who have seen this film have proven that there is an audience for this film, and I thank you,” she said in a statement, according to Deadline . “I wrote this because I wanted audiences, I wanted us, I wanted myself to connect with the ecosystem of humanity’s connected to incarceration, so we as a society can stop defining people by their worst possible acts, that we can end mass incarceration, and dismantle the mass prison industrial complex, and root our societies in true justice and mercy and freedom, which is all tied to our joy inside, that nobody can ever incarcerate or execute.” The filmmaker joins a distinguished list of pivotal directors who have won the Grand Jury Prize for their U.S. Dramatic entries, including Ryan Coogler , Damien Chazelle , and Desiree Akhavan . Black women in entertainment are starting off the year strong. Taraji P Henson Talks Love For Successful Black Women, What Men Want & More

What Men Want hits theaters next week. The latest movie was super producer Will Packer that stars Taraji P Henson tells the story of Ali Davis, a successful black woman trying to make partner at a big sports agency in Atlanta that has clients like Lisa Leslie , Shaquille O’Neal and more. When she gets passed up for a big promotion to someone who isn’t as good as she is, Ali starts wonders what else she needs to do to succeed in a man’s world. Hoping to find answers from a psychic who makes her drink a weird concoction that suddenly allows her to hear what men are thinking. Using her newfound ability, Ali starts to turn the tables on her obnoxious male colleagues while racing to sign the next basketball superstar. This movie highlights a strong woman who isn’t afraid to make the first move on a guy, puts her career first and is willing to stop at nothing to get to the top. While watching this hilarious tale of Ali Davis I drew a parallel to some of my successful Black female friends who haven’t been able to find love. So I asked Taraji her thoughts on why men are cautious when approaching successful Black women. Taraji thinks when Black women label themselves as strong it can scar potential dates away. Taraji explained that “A lot of men feel like they don’t have anything to offer,” a successful Black woman but they need to, “Stop thinking of it in terms of material things. Usually, when a woman is successful and she’s made her way in the world and she’s got her money, she’s financially stable — What she needs and what’s often missing is the emotional support. Sometimes that’s literally what we need from a man. We need emotional support and to feel loved unconditionally.” That What Men Want star goes on to explain that when she has to go out in the world and fight her battles and prove her worth she needs a man at home who is saying, ‘Baby you can do it.’ Taraji goes on to explain how calling yourself a strong black woman can scare potential men you want to date away. In What Men Want Taraji’s ambition does come into play with her relationship interest in the film, which is played by former Underground star Aldis Hodge. The ups and downs of their relationship journey lead to some really funny on camera moments that make What Men Want extremely funny helping 2019 continue Hollywood’s run at some extremely great films. So on February 8th so see What Men Want if you want to see a funny movie that pushes gender norms while entertaining to the masses.
