Can Battleship Strengthen Rihanna’s Image, Post-Chris Brown?

A new batch of Battleship stills show singer-turned-actress Rihanna in Navy gear manning all manner of combat machinery as the resident weapons specialist in Taylor Kitsch ‘s crew. But can her feature debut in Peter Berg’s summer blockbuster counteract the criticism she’s getting from reuniting, at least professionally, with Chris Brown? The stills (below, via Universal and Digital Spy ) hit the web at a conspicuous time for Rihanna, who was assaulted in 2009 by then-boyfriend Brown. After a three-year split, during which time Brown was sentenced to domestic violence counseling and community service and ordered to stay away from Rihanna by restraining order, the two collaborated on a pair of songs released this week. According to producer The-Dream, who oversaw the “Birthday Cake” remix featuring Brown, the move was Rihanna’s idea. “The true thing really is to forgive,” he explained to Billboard Magazine . “And … you want to believe in people.” Some celeb-watchers take the reunion as more than just a professional expression of forgiveness. “The message couldn’t have been clearer to the world,” writes Hollywood Life’s Bonnie Fuller. “We’re a couple again and we’re saying it in the strongest way that we know how — through our music.” That seems like a bit of a stretch, but whatever the relationship, many fans who supported Rihanna as she bounced back from the public fallout of the 2009 incident are understandably upset that the 24-year-old would unite on any front with her former attacker. Enter Battleship . Over a year after the assault, Rihanna was cast as Petty Officer Raikes in Universal’s naval actioner. She’d been looking to break into film already, telling MTV in 2008 that she was looking “seriously” into making her acting debut. Battleship , then, provided a prime opportunity; as Raikes, Rihanna gets to play a strong, serious-minded character involved directly in action sequences whom she’s described as “one of the guys” — as opposed to the film’s eye candy, as embodied in Brooklyn Decker as Kitsch’s love interest. That character quality alone may have been reason enough to break into a side career in acting with Battleship , but it also allows Rihanna to project an image of strength and resilience to her fans. At the helm of a gunboat or wielding assault rifles, she is seen in a position of control and dominance, the would-be executor of violence (against aliens, in this case) instead of a victim. Of course, that’s not to say Battleship will erase the image of Rihanna, battered and bruised, from our collective memories. It certainly shouldn’t, in the least. And it’s not quite a pointed personal statement that, say, a G.I. Jane or a Brave One -styled vigilante pic might be; it’s a subtle move that simultaneously eases first-time actor Rihanna into the movies in a supporting role with more seasoned actors around to do the heavy lifting. Conspicuous as it is that new Rihanna-holding-guns images were released into the world around the same time as her Chris Brown collaborations (joining a few more that were previously released by Universal), it hints at an effort to protect her image from the backlash that any Brown-related association invites. But Battleship has yet to be seen, and Rihanna, who hasn’t yet directly addressed the Brown collaborations, may yet still win back or further alienate her following in the weeks to come.

Pixar Hits a Girl Power Bullseye with New Brave Trailer

Fingers are crossed that Pixar bounces back from the uncharacteristic critical disappointment that was Cars 2 with their next effort, Brave — a foray into Disney princess territory about a headstrong young Scottish lass (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) who defies tradition in her parents’ kingdom. A new trailer for the animated adventure promises no small measure of spunky girl power as our heroine Merida upends an archery contest where doofus candidates are vying for her hand in marriage. It’s not a traditional trailer so much as it is a scene from the film, but it conveys a sense of what to expect, tonally. (Watch the first full trailer here .) From what’s been released so far it seems Brave ‘s story will be its strength; the round, cartoony CG-animated character design doesn’t appeal much to me, but Merida’s spirit is infectious in this twist on the familiar medieval archery scenario. (That’s Billy Connolly voicing her father and Emma Thompson as her mom, in case you were curious.) Brave hits theaters June 22; leave your impressions below!

Safe House Director’s Previous Feature Finally Hitting Theaters

It’s only taken a few years, but the success of director Daniel Espinosa’s Safe House means that Harvey Weinstein is finally ready to let the filmmaker’s Swedish-language hit Easy Money — née Snabba Cash — off his shelf on July 27. The distributor cited the eventual Stateside publication of the film’s source novel (as opposed to Safe House ‘s $83 million-and-counting domestic haul ) as his motivation: “We love the movie, but we needed the book to be out here,” he told the LAT . Right . As always with Harvey, all release dates are subject to change and/or revocation at any time, so remember to mark your calendars in pencil. [ LAT ]

It’s been known to galvanize everybody from the upper echelons of Academy leadership to the vexed likes of Corey Feldman . But regardless of the politics and passions, it’s ultimately the all-too-rare equalizer for folks looking to play the odds at any Oscar party: The In Memoriam montage. In grand Movieline tradition, this year’s ballot considers those actors, directors, executives and other industry professionals to whom we said goodbye over the last year. REVIEW: Paul Rudd Helps Keep Sweet, Affable Wanderlust on Track

The title of David Wain’s latest directorial effort suggests more direction than its urbanite couple George (Paul Rudd) and Linda (Jennifer Aniston) really have. ” Wanderlust ” indicates feeling an urge to seek out new pastures, but when the pair end up on the road it’s only because they’ve been forced there, unemployment sending them plummeting out of their Manhattan lifestyle like satellites knocked from their orbits. George works in an office and Linda has so far just bounced from whim to whim — her most recent unsuccessful venture is a documentary about penguins with cancer — and the two have scraped together the cash to buy what their real-estate agent euphemistically calls a “microloft” in the West Village. They can’t sell the tiny apartment, and they can’t afford to keep it when George loses his job and HBO turns down Linda’s film for being depressing (and not sexy depressing), and so they end up slinking down to Atlanta in defeat to stay with George’s bullying brother (Ken Marino) and stumbling across bed and breakfast/commune Elysium on the way. When you try your hardest to carve out a life for yourself somewhere, only to abruptly end up with nothing to show for it years later, the desire to just drop out of the whole race makes a lot more sense. Wanderlust  is an agreeable comedy that peters out halfway through, but it presents a believable case for why two people with no innate hippie impulses would become infatuated with and join life in a rural collective or, as its charismatic leader Seth (Justin Theroux) insists on calling it, an “intentional community.” Wain’s film, which he wrote with Marino, presents a pair of dimensional, empathetically drawn characters in George and Linda, two people who when finally made to take time for introspection realize how many grievances and unhappinesses they’ve been burying inside themselves. None of the other characters are close to as fully realized, whether they be patchouli-wafting free-love advocates or depressed, alcoholic suburban housewives, and the film tends to abruptly downshift whenever its focus moves from George and Linda to something else, like a late, perfunctory plotline in which Elysium is threatened by local developers who want to bulldoze it in order to build a casino. It’s funny and sweet when it’s about a couple trying to figure out their place in the world, and for the most part broad and too easy when looking for laughs in Elysium’s day-to-day philosophy. As a director, Wain has earned his place on the cult comedy pantheon with 2001’s Wet Hot American Summer , which built a following after bellyflopping into theaters over a decade ago.  Wanderlust is more standard issue than that one, lacking its abrasive elements but also seeming unlikely to improve with repeated viewings. It’s initially George’s idea to return to Elysium and give life there a two-week test drive, but it’s Linda who really takes to it, and the midsection of the film is episodic and hit-or-miss as Linda embraces life as a poncho-wearing flower child and catches Seth’s eye while George grows disillusioned with truth circles and sharing everything. Some of the scenes — a hallucinogenic trip on ayahuasca tea or strategic displays of wine-making nudist Wayne’s (Joe Lo Truglio) prodigious penis — are funny, but others, including many with Theroux’s bloviating New Age guru whose knowledge of the outside world drops off after the ’90s, fall flat. Wanderlust ‘s comedic interest in Elysium and its inhabitants seems to go as far as George’s attachment to the place. It’s great to visit, but it’s not long before you want to leave. Wanderlust  has the ease of a film that’s reuniting people who’ve worked together before: Besides the presence of aforementioned  The State alums Lo Truglio and Marino, it also has Kerri Kenney-Silver as flaky Elysium matriarch Kathy and small appearances from Michael Showalter and Michael Ian Black, who form a mini Stella  reunion with Wain as news anchors whose banter is less than TV-appropriate. Rudd and Aniston, who co-starred in 1998’s  The Object of My Affection  and shared the small screen on Friends , also have a comfortable chemistry, seeming feasibly like two people who love each other but who’ve never before had to subject their relationship to any kind of stress test. Rudd’s particularly good when playing someone aware of but unable to remedy how out of his element he is — in the midst of a hilariously glazed-eyed high, he plays the didgeridoo and  bonds with fellow pot-smoker Rodney (Jordan Peele) and his pregnant girlfriend Almond (Lauren Ambrose), but in the bright light of day has trouble dealing with his inability to fit in. He has a guitar duel with Seth over who’s better at playing “Two Princes,” he can’t poop when everyone keeps coming into the doorless bathroom to talk to him, and he’s unsure how to deal with the open- relationship advances of Eva (Malin Akerman) — “No way!” he responds when she describes her particular bedroom skill. It’s Rudd who provides the tenuous through-line that holds together this scattered ramble of a film, by realizing that there’s a middle ground between high-rise living and a cooperative farm, and that it’s where most people end up.

Jennifer Aniston Dashes Fans’ Hopes For A ‘Friends’ Reunion

‘Wanderlust’ co-star Paul Rudd also rules out a ‘Clueless’ sequel during ‘MTV First.’ By John Mitchell, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd Photo: MTV News “Friends” fanatics hoping for a reunion of the beloved sitcom will be crying into their oversized Central Perk coffee cups when they hear what Jennifer Aniston has to say about the possibility of seeing Rachel, Ross, Phoebe, Monica, Chandler and Joey back together again. Aniston joined her “Wanderlust” co-star Paul Rudd for “MTV First” to take Twitter questions from fans — one of whom happened to be film critic and entertainment journalist Ben Lyons, who got a little ribbing from the two stars as well as MTV News” Josh Horowitz for not asking the question himself, before the team got to his question: “What will we see first? A “Clueless” or “Friends” reunion?” The actress” reaction was slightly flustered but swift. “No, there will be none,” she said. “I don’t think so. … Wouldn’t that be weird? I would be like, “Oh god, why did they do that?” ” Rudd also answered in the negative regarding a reunion of the beloved “90s teen flick, crushing the hearts of fans who may be wondering what became of Cher (Alicia Silverstone) and Josh’s (Rudd) relationship. “Well, you know, “Clueless” was “Emma,” ” Rudd said of the movie’s literary inspiration, which had no sequel. “So I don’t know what you”d do.” The comely pair also told MTV News that they wouldn’t be a good fit for the commune lifestyle their “Wanderlust” characters are thrust into in the film, which hits theaters Friday. “I don’t think I could exist realistically in that kind of setting,” Aniston told MTV News. “But there’s a version of that groups of friends in close proximity [and] in my early 20s, I had that. Where you kind of showed up at each other’s houses — very similar to the friendship show.” One particular element of commune living does not appeal to Aniston and that is the, um, sharing of partners. “I don’t think that’s an end-well situation,” she said. “But there are a lot of people who do it.” Always quick to the joke, Rudd added, “A lot of them live in Paris.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Wanderlust.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Jennifer Aniston Aggressively Hypes Her Nonexistent Nude Scene

Ok guys, get your rotten tomatoes ready, because this is just ridiculous. After reportedly insisting that producers cut her topless scene from her new movie Wanderlust , Jennifer Aniston has been going on a media blitz to promote the film. “So what”, you say? Here’s what: she will not shut up about how great her nude scene was . in an interview with Entertainment Tonight Canada , Jennifer says that ” ‘Liberating’ is a good word to use ” to describe the experience of shooting her topless scene, which she says ” fit the spirit of the movie .” Not only that, but she went on Chelsea Lately last night for an interview that skewed heavily towards discussing the nude scene that reportedly isn’t even in the film , including this infuriating statement by Chelsea Handler : “I’ve been lucky enough to see you topless in our private life, but now America, when they go to see the movie, will get to see her topless running!” Jen went on to say of her naked male co-stars, ” Finally, for once, the men have to disrobe! Trust me, there is your fair share of breasticles as well …” Breasticles? BREASTICLES?? Commence fruit-flinging…now!

How The Hunger Games Brought a Web Windfall to the World’s Tiniest Island Community

Next month brings the launch of The Hunger Games , one of the most-anticipated releases of the 2012 calendar and the first installment of a hopeful franchise based on Suzanne Collins’s bestselling young-adult adventure trilogy. In selling their film, studio execs at Lionsgate have ramped up all manner of marketing to immerse fans in the experience — and, in doing so, have made the least-populated jursdiction on the planet a financial beneficiary. The Hunger Games series features teenaged heroine Katniss Everdeen and concerns a North America remade into a dystopian dictatorship, renamed Panem and ruled by the governing body called The Capitol. As Lionsgate has expanded its promotional campaign, a wide array of affiliated websites has sprung up in an effort to make Panem as real as possible, many of those bearing obscure web addresses (e.g. www.Capitol.pn) to imply that the sites originate in the nation depicted in the film. This unique designation is not a studio fabrication, however. The .pn modifier is the domain offered up by the very real government of the Pitcairn Islands, a collection of four land masses comprising 18 square miles in the middle of the southern Pacific Ocean. This British territory rests over a thousand miles west of Easter Island and just as far east of Tahiti. So how did Pitcairn, with barely over 50 residents and intermittent electrical services, become the Internet home of a major Hollywood franchise? “It’s a happy coincidence,” Bill Haigh, governmental registrar for the island’s domain offices, told me in an e-mail correspondence. “Lionsgate have found .pn useful to them, and it has been helpful for bringing benefit to the island.” As the movie studio looked into creating an online presence for the film’s fictional nation, a functional domain was already in place. The Pitcairn government offers up these domains primarily for corporations to establish and/or protect their brand, and Haigh explained that the proceeds go a long way toward the islands’ infrastructural upkeep. “The sale of domain names is of great benefit to the 50 or so inhabitants of Pitcairn Island,” he said, “because revenue thus gathered is used to bring modern telecommunications to this extremely remote spot on the globe via satellite. This is quite an expensive process. And it is not only for telecommunications but generally for supply shipping, children’s education, medical care etc.” The result is that The Hunger Games has become a boon for this tiny territory, one that lacks a movie theater and receives but two cable channels — CNN and Turner Classic Movies. While Haigh declined to divulge the number of Web addresses purchased by the studio (Lionsgate reps did not respond to requests for comment), he did direct me to an online registry where one can inquire about the availability and ownership of various selections. Along with already established Capitol.pn, and CapitolCouture.pn, there are registrations for Panem’s various districts (District1.pn, through District13.pn), and each of the main characters have their own addresses (e.g. PresidentSnow.pn). Ultimately it’s impossible to deduce exactly how many Hunger Games characters, phrases and permutations thereof have staked a .pn claim. After browsing the registry for a while, however, it seems safe to assume that Lionsgate may have vastly more addresses collected than there are Pitcairn residents. And based on the fee of $100 NZ (appx. $75 US) per registered address, Hunger brings in revenues well into the thousands of dollars — a tidy supplement to the islands’ steady tourism business. As geographically remote as the Pitcairn Islands are, this Hunger Games dalliance does not make for their sole involvement with Hollywood. Most of the surnames found on the island are shared by characters from the oft-adapted novel Mutiny on The Bounty ; the book and numerous films are based on historical events that occurred on and around Pitcairn. For this reason cruise ships are a common sight in Bounty Bay, where visitors will find the outpost isle’s own capitol. However, as much of a windfall as Hunger Games may prove for the islands, it is doubtful “Everdeen” will appear anytime soon in the area phone books. Josh Hutcherson Prepares for a Pounding in High School Slasher Detention

Joseph Kahn’s Detention had me from its first knowingly self-aware trailer, and while word out of SXSW was polarizing — a love it or hate it kind of deal, by many accounts — it’s one of my more anticipated films of the spring. True, the competition this season isn’t too stiff, but still! Watch Josh Hutcherson (of next months The Hunger Games , perhaps you’ve heard of it?) as a cute hipster kid get ready to take a beating from the school tough guy while an actual killer runs rampant through town and tell me this isn’t worth putting on the calendar for April. Here’s the film’s full trailer, to give you a sense of what we’re in for. Admittedly, the nonstop pop culture references schtick has been almost fully exhausted by now but good, clever high school comedies never get old. Call it Not Another Not Another Teen Movie , if you will/must. Adding to the intrigue: Detention was shot half a year before Hutcherson was cast as Peeta in The Hunger Games , so the timing of release here is obvious. Will Hunger Games fans flock to the R-rated horror comedy to see a new side of Hutcherson in what may be the edgiest/darkest/ballsiest project since he graduated from family flicks? Detention will be released in select theaters on April 13. [via Badass Digest ]
