‘Devil Inside’ Advance Screenings Draw Passionate Reactions

Fans report being terrified, but some critics tweet about audiences booing at film’s conclusion. By Kevin Sullivan, with additional reporting by Matt Elias Bonnie Morgan in “The Devil Inside” Photo: Paramount “The Devil Inside,” the latest entry in the found-footage genre, screened Thursday night for special sneak-preview audiences and had the crowds screaming for two very different reasons. Some of the audience members, like Adam Geldres, found themselves shaken up after the screening; Geldres insisted that it was “one of the scariest movies [he’s] seen.” Ashlei Lien felt the same way. After the screening, she told MTV News and said, “I don’t even want to pray, because I’m scared because in the movie he prays …” but she couldn’t finish her thought. The film, which follows a young woman as she travels to Rome to meet with her possessed and dangerous mother, garnered passionate reactions across the board, but Twitter told a different story than the viewers we caught up with after the screening. Passion is not always positive. Soon after the advance screenings ended, critics, who were also in attendance, took to Twitter to share the reactions many of them witnessed. Many reported booing at separate screenings as soon as the film ended. Drew McWeeny from HitFix ( @DrewAtHitFix ) shared his experience from a regular midnight showing. “Wow. ‘The Devil Inside’ is a big ol’ burn. Active booing in the (sold-out) theater tonight.” El Mayimbe from Latino Review ( @elmayimbe ) said that audiences were even more hostile at one New York screening. “Audience at NYC screening were ready to kill the filmmakers if they were in attendance. So they took it out on poor ushers.” SPOILER ALERT The controversy stemmed from the film’s ending, which comes abruptly and, as many people claim, arbitrarily. A title on the screen then directs fans to a website to find out more. ‘Avatar 2’ Underwater Filming Has Sam Worthington ‘Nervous’

‘I love the ocean, but I’m just a bit unsure about it,’ actor tells MTV News about James Cameron sequel. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Kara Warner Sam Worthington Photo: MTV News The upcoming sequel to James Cameron’s record-breaking film “Avatar” is going to showcase a whole new area of Pandora. With the destruction of the Na’vi’s Hometree in the first flick, Jake Sully, Neytiri and the rest of the tribe are apparently going to be spending some quality time in the planet’s ocean . And, to try to keep the filmgoing experience as authentic as possible, Cameron would like to shoot those scenes underwater . As an avid fan of diving, this is a passion project for Cameron, though he admitted to MTV News in the past that he likes to keep his work and extracurriculars separate. At least it’s not going to be all new to him, as Cameron previously said that he learned a few tricks from producing the underwater thriller “Sanctum.” The difficulty is trying to figure out how to do performance capture underwater, which is something he said has never been done before. In preparation for the film, Cameron is apparently trying to convince his leading man, Sam Worthington, to go diving with him. “He’s trying to get me to scuba-dive,” Worthington told MTV News on Friday (January 6). “I’ve never been, but he got me the gear and the tanks, so I’ve got to give it a go. I’ve got to get my lessons. I’m a bit nervous.” Worthington’s quickly running out of time to start training, though, as his “Avatar” costar Sigourney Weaver started the rumor that Cameron plans to get the cameras rolling on “Avatar 2” at some point in 2012 . Worthington admitted that he’s a little uncomfortable with the concept of learning how to scuba-dive and shooting underwater. Turns out he’s more afraid of filming in the ocean than he was of heights, a fear he had to cope with while shooting his upcoming thriller “Man on a Ledge,” out January 27. “I love the ocean, but I’m just a bit unsure about it. I suppose once I’m down there and have done it, it will be [ snaps fingers ],” Worthington said. “I’m not worried about [the unknown]; that’s the exciting part. It’s more the claustrophobia.” But sacrifices must be made for the greater good of the film. Cameron told MTV News that he wanted to shoot in the water because “we’ll have characters that are in and under the water.” At least Worthington has a better sense of how the ocean plotline will fit into the greater “Avatar” narrative than we do. “I don’t know when [Cameron]’s going to start ‘Avatar 2,’ but I know he’s been telling me bits about it,” he said. ‘Dark Shadows’ Trailer: Three Things We Want To See

From Eva Green’s witch, Angelique, to what’s really up with Dr. Hoffman, here are the top things we’re itching to see. By John Mitchell Tim Burton and Johnny Depp on the set of “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures We are just five months away from the release of the hottest vampire movie that doesn’t sparkle in the sunshine, and we’re starting to get excited. Very excited. But unlike the other major movies that have earned themselves a column here at MTV — “The Avengers,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” “The Hunger Games” and “The Twilight Saga” — we are still waiting for a trailer for “Dark Shadows.” And, well, we’re starting to get pretty impatient. So far, director Tim Burton has kept a tight lid on his vampire soap opera — only a few official pics from the set (and one much-discussed paparazzi shot of Johnny Depp in character as Barnabas Collins) have been released. But the new year should bring fresh blood. We know filming has wrapped and that things apparently went so well on set that Michelle Pfeiffer told MTV News while promoting “New Year’s Eve” that working on “Dark Shadows” was “a dream job.” Pfeiffer, who plays family matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, added that she hopes the film does well so “we can do a bunch of them, because it was such a fantastic, creative group of people.” Whether that on-set camaraderie will translate into the campy big-screen spook-fest we’re hoping for remains to be seen, and while we hope the trailer doesn’t give too much away, here are a few things we’re hoping to see when it arrives. 1. Eva Green in action as Angelique Angelique Bouchard is the witch who turned Barnabas into a vampire in the late 1700s after their affair went sour. She’s a woman with an axe to grind and has been haunting and cursing the Collins family ever since. So far, the only image we’ve seen of Green in character is the full cast shot, in which she stands in the background wearing modern clothes. We hope the trailer gives us a taste of how the “Casino Royale” Bond girl is going to play the over-the-top villainess. This is a scenery-chewing role that any actress worth her salt would have a field day with. We have faith that the super sexy starlet will do it justice, but a little advance evidence would be nice. We want to see corsets, blood and maybe a voodoo doll or two. 2. A little insight into what Dr. Hoffman is up to For us, one of the biggest mysteries of the film is exactly what role Helena Bonham Carter’s Dr. Julia Hoffman will play in the shenanigans at Collinwood Mansion. The actress has described her character as “an alcoholic psychologist,” and screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith told Entertainment Weekly that Hoffman “has been there for years, working with David [Collins] but not making any progress. He still claims he sees ghosts and talks with his dead mother.” Grahame-Smith goes on to describe the character as “a woman with a lot of secrets herself” who is “interested in Barnabas in more than one way.” What no one has mentioned is Hoffman’s role, in the original series, as a blood disorders specialist who attempts to cure Barnabas of his vampirism. We’ll be watching this trailer very closely to see if HBC is carrying more vials than she is notepads. 3. Collinwood Mansion We got a glimpse of the manor in the cast shot, with its Gothic windows and ancient-looking rugs, but we’re excited to see the rest of the haunted mansion. Overlooking the Atlantic from Collinsport, Maine, the house contains a room that is a gateway to a parallel time, for goodness’ sake. Given that so much of the action of the series takes place within the walls of the mansion, we’re really hoping that Burton and his first-class team of art directors, set designers and cinematographers got it right and captured the regal horror of the place. ‘The Hunger Games’ In 2012: Our Five Forecasts

From the film’s premiere to casting ‘Catching Fire,’ Hobnobbing takes a look at what to look forward to this year. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in the “Hunger Games” trailer Photo: Lionsgate The past year boasted a cornucopia of ” Hunger Games ” highlights for fans to chew on, from the casting of Jennifer Lawrence as gritty heroine Katniss Everdeen to the first full-length trailer to the recent debut of Taylor Swift’s soundtrack song “Safe and Sound.” But as bountiful as 2011’s harvest was, 2012 will offer a bumper crop of news from the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian tome as it finally hits theaters March 23. Though our calls to Greasy Sae’s Psychic Hotline have gone unanswered, we have a few educated guesses about what the new year holds for Panem’s people. Read on for our five forecasts: 1. One more trailer With just about two and a half months to go until the first film’s debut, we’d bet a silver parachute that fans will get to feast on one more look at Katniss, Peeta and Gale before the tributes enter the arena. What another clip would include , well, we’re less sure about that, but we wouldn’t mind a closer look at life in District 12 or a more detailed glimpse at the other 22 tributes. 2. A full soundtrack announcement Swift, the Civil Wars, the Decemberists and Arcade Fire’s husband/wife duo of Win Butler and Regine Chassagne have all been secured for the T-Bone Burnett-produced soundtrack, but we suspect a few more artists will enter the fray before all is said and sung. I’ve already made my plea for Florence and the Machine , while NextMovie suggested acts like Snow Patrol and Regina Spektor for the much-anticipated album. We’ll keep our ears to the ground for this one. 3. The film’s premiere Unless the apocalypse comes early, March 23 will be a blessed day for “Hunger Games” acolytes, as the flick will finally blaze into theaters. We expect more than a few faithful to camp out at their local cineplex for a midnight showing. And we’re more than ready to drool over whatever confections Lawrence wears on the red carpet during the movie’s premieres and publicity circuit. 4. Casting “Catching Fire” With the second “Hunger Games” installment already slated for a November 22, 2013, release (and an Oscar-winning writer being eyed for the script), we expect the follow-up to begin shooting in mid- to late 2012 — which means a whole new slew of casting calls! Where are you Finnick , Johanna, Beetee and Mags? 5. First look at “Catching Fire” Asking for a celluloid sneak would be a stretch, but we don’t think it’s completely inconceivable to think a first snapshot might find its way to the Web by the final days of 2012. Here’s hoping the “Catching Fire” director (whomever he/she will be) isn’t afraid to take a cue from “Breaking Dawn” helmer Bill Condon, who released the first photographic teaser for the final “Twilight” installments over Thanksgiving in 2010. Happy holidays, “Hunger Games” fans? What are your expectations for “The Hunger Games” in 2012? ‘Akira’ Movie Shut Down To Reassess Budget

Kristen Stewart is reportedly in talks to star alongside Garrett Hedlund in the manga adaptation. By Kevin P. Sullivan Kristen Stewart Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images Though “Akira” has had significant developments in recent months — including potentially adding Kristen Stewart to the cast — Warner Bros. has shut down production on the live-action adaptation of the classic anime and manga. For years, “Akira” had been an on-again, off-again production, with the likes of Keanu Reeves and Albert Hughes involved at one point. But the most recent attempt at the film — with “Unknown” director Jaume Collet-Serra and “Harry Potter” screenwriter Steve Kloves retouching the script — made the most progress on the property to date, getting as far as casting Garrett Hedlund as Kaneda, the lead. The Hollywood Reporter broke the story of the shutdown, citing a source close to the production. According to the report, Warner Bros. closed the Vancouver production offices in order to reassess the budget, which the studio feared was too high. Over the next two weeks, producers will meet with Collet-Serra to work on the script with an eye on reducing costs. Insiders claim that Warner Bros. is looking to reduce the $90 million budget to the realm of $60 million or $70 million. The proposed $90 million was already half of what it was for Hughes’ production. Lowering the budget to that level was one of the accomplishments under Collet-Serra’s version of the film, along with casting Hedlund in the lead and eyeing high-profile stars for the supporting roles. Kristen Stewart, Ken Watanabe and Helena Bonham-Carter were three of the stars in various stages of negotiations to join the film. The “Twilight” star had reportedly been offered the female lead as Kei, while Watanabe stepped up for the Colonel after Gary Oldman turned down the role. Sources close to the production tell THR that despite the setback, “Akira” is far from dead, saying, “It’s a very resilient movie. Warner Bros. just won’t let it die.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Related Videos MTV Rough Cut: Kristen Stewart

Bel Ami Early Screening Draws Raves for Robert Pattinson’s Buttcrack, Thrusting

Most audiences will have to wait until this spring to glimpse Twilight vamp Robert Pattinson as a rascally womanizer in the period drama Bel Ami , but select lucky Belgian fans got a chance to screen the film early this week. Since the trades have yet to pass judgment, let’s take a look at what the netizens had to say in their Bel Ami fan reviews: “Amazing!” “Stunning!” “A little bit psycho!” And, oh my — “sexy thrusting!” More waxing poetic over RPattz’s heavenly buttcrack (and oh yeah, his performance) after the jump. The period tale, adapted from Guy de Maupassant’s novel, follows the exploits of Georges Duroy (Robert Pattinson) as he sleeps his way through Parisian high society bedding ladies (Christina Ricci, Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas) left and right. What did these citizen critics have to say following Bel Ami ‘s debut in Belgium? From @NissaStew : OMG ROB IS HOT IN BEL AMI!!!! HIS EYES IN THIS MOVIE!!! DEAD AND YES FULL ASS IS HOT. HIS ACTING IS REALLY REALLY GOOD! HE SOMETIMES LOOKED LIKE A SERIAL KILLER. THE INTENSITY OF HIS EYES IS UNF!!![sic] I don’t think that EVERYBODY is going to like it because its a little slow. But God its a great movie. From @ JewelFen via RobertPattinsonUK : There’s one scene, which we personally found a bit odd. George wants to have sex with Madeleine, she at first doesn’t but gives in. Then there’s an extreme side close up from George’s face, and you see a bit of Madeleine where she is practically raping him. He wants her to slow down, but she just keeps going on. You only saw George’s face, and that was just awkward. Of course he finishes, but not on a happy note..You have to see it to understand, it was filmed really weird. From @bikinistew : The part where he gets all crazy and mad because it seems like he loses everything, may be the strongest part of the film, in my opinion. He’s raging all the time, smashing some glasses against the walls (which you may have seen in the trailers too), He throws women on the ground and so on,.. From @GigglyKristen After about 5 minutes it was already NAKED ROB time! HE’S THE THRUSTER! Yes, you can say that! I didn’t expect that it would be that way, it was shocking, intense, yeah we’re not used to see Rob like this. NAKED BUT AND THRUST, THRUST… I was already dead after 5 minutes! And then he was wearing some 19th century underpants, and all I saw was BUTTCRACK! From @iHeartBadasStew : *SPOILER* Rob has one hell of an ass! From IMDb user Blackbeanie : To be honest, I don’t think this is Oscar material. In sum: Angry RPattz is good, RPattz buttcrack is great, RPattz’s thrusting is phenomenal, Uma raping RPattz is weird, and the jury’s out on Bel Ami ‘s Oscar chances. Works for me! Variety and THR, eat your hearts out. For more fan reviews, check out these diligent reports from the good folks at ROBsessed and Spunk-Ransom . Sony/Columbia will release the R-rated Bel Ami stateside. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Benedict Cumberbatch Lands Villain Role in ‘Star Trek 2’

BBC’s ‘Sherlock’ actor also has upcoming roles in ‘The Hobbit.’ By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Benedict Cumberbatch Photo: Getty Images Damon Lindelof, “Lost” co-creator and one of the screenwriters behind J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek 2,” tweeted on Monday, “Something really, REALLY cool just happened. #BoldlyGo.” All signs pointed to a looming “Trek” announcement, but we didn’t find out what was setting Lindelof’s phasers to stun until two days later. Benedict Cumberbatch , the British actor most recently seen in “War Horse” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” will play the main villain in the “Star Trek” sequel. This was the role for which Abrams originally wanted Benicio Del Toro , but had

Will Taylor Swift Hit The Big Screen In ‘Les Miserables’?

Country star has reportedly been offered the role of Eponine. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift imagined in the role of Eponine in the Broadway version of “Les Miserables” Photo: Broadway/ MTV News The cast of “Les Miserables” is really shaping up to be the quite A-list one. With folks like Anne Hathaway , Russell Crowe, Helena Bonham Carter and Hugh Jackman already onboard for the big-screen adaptation of the stage show, word comes that both Taylor Swift and Amanda Seyfried are deep in talks for roles in the film. Universal has offered Swift the role of Eponine and Seyfried the part of Cosette, Broadwayworld.com has confirmed. Who would fill these roles had been widely speculated since Lea Michele, Scarlett Johansson and Evan Rachel Wood were all in the running. The website says rehearsals start later this month, so official casting news should come down the pipeline soon. The flick is slated to start shooting in May with Tom Hooper directing. It’s expected to be released on December 7, 2012. When Swift spoke to MTV News at the launch of her Wonderstruck perfume, she teased she was working on “some surprise projects that may or may not happen, and possibly some acting.” “I’ve just been so excited about what’s gonna happen in the next year,” she said. “I’m also really excited about [the next album]. I’ve been writing all the time. I’ve been writing so much for the new record. I can’t believe I’m saying that already. It comes out in a year, but I’m already excited about it.” Seyfried displayed her singing chops in another Broadway-to-screen adaptation. She landed the lead in “Mamma Mia!” back in 2008. Katy Perry And Russell Brand: A Timeline

We take a look back at the divorcing couple’s whirlwind relationship and rumor-plagued marriage. By John Mitchell Katy Perry and Russell Brand Photo: George Pimentel/ Getty Images Fans of Katy Perry and Russell Brand were sad to hear Friday that the Gammy-nominated pop star and her actor/comedian husband were divorcing after just 14 months of marriage. Theirs was a whirlwind romance: They were engaged less than four months after they started dating, were married 10 months later in an elaborate ceremony in India, and now, after months of endless baby and breakup rumors, are parting ways. “Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage,” Brand said in a statement. “I will always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.” Like so many Hollywood couples before them, their flame burned hot and fast. Here’s a look back at the many milestone moments in Perry and Brand’s relationship. September 7, 2008 : Brand met Perry when he was hosting the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards . “Get Him to the Greek” director Nick Stoller set up a shoot at the VMAs to snag some fun celebrity cameos for the film, in which the British comedian stars. Stoller lined up Christina Aguilera, Pink and Perry, who had immediate chemistry with Brand. Later, following Perry’s performance of “I Kissed a Girl” at the VMAs, Brand joked, “I was so inspired by Katy Perry’s song’s message that I’m currently going through nine ChapSticks a day and my penis has never felt more moisturized.” There was only one problem: Perry wasn’t single — she was still dating Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy. September 13, 2009 : A year later, at the 2009 VMAs, however, was a very different story. Perry and McCoy had parted ways, and longtime ladies’ man Brand, who was back for his second time as host, was single as well when both returned to the VMA stage. They flirted their way through rehearsals for the show, and rumors that they were an item began soon thereafter. October 7, 2009 : Though things reportedly got hot and heavy pretty quickly after the VMAs, Perry and Brand were not spotted together publicly for nearly three weeks, making their debut as a couple at a Fendi party at Paris Fashion Week. December 31, 2009 : On an extended holiday vacation, Brand proposed on New Year’s Eve at a tiger sanctuary in Rajasthan, India, and Perry said yes. A week earlier, while visiting the Taj Mahal, she tweeted, “He built this for me. So when do I start walking the streets naked singing that Alanis song?” (meaning “Thank U,” about time Alanis Morissette spent in India). August 2010 : Talking to Rolling Stone while promoting her multiplatinum, hit-machine record Teenage Dream, Perry admitted her religious upbringing sometimes caused conflict between herself and Brand. “I am sensitive to Russell taking the Lord’s name in vain and to Lady Gaga putting a rosary in her mouth,” she told the mag. “I think when you put sex and spirituality in the same bottle and shake it up, bad things happen.” October 23, 2010 : Perry and Brand get married in an elaborate ceremony at the Aman-i-Khas luxury resort in India, adjacent to the tiger sanctuary where he proposed. The wedding capped off days of festivities in the couple’s honor, including a Bollywood-themed party and tours of the sanctuary. “Russell Brand and Katy Perry are overjoyed to confirm that they were pronounced Mr. and Mrs. Brand on Saturday, October 23,” the couple said in a statement to MTV News. “The very private and spiritual ceremony, attended by the couples’ closest family and friends, was performed by a Christian minister and longtime friend of the Hudson Family [Katy’s maiden name]. The backdrop was the inspirational and majestic countryside of Northern India.” April 7, 2011 : During a co-hosting stint on “Live With Regis and Kelly,” Brand says he and Perry are as happy as can be despite ongoing rumors to the contrary, but admits that the constant attention from the paparazzi does put stress on their relationship. Katy Perry was chosen as MTV’s 2011 Artist of the Year. November 11, 2011 : Appearing on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” to tout the end of her successful California Dreams Tour, Perry told DeGeneres she wanted kids with Russell . “I would love to have children. I think that’s one of the reasons you get married, and especially to the person that you marry. You think, ‘Hmmm, that person is going to be a good partner, a good parent,’ ” Perry said. “But I’m not sure it’s yet. We’ll see, you know?” During the sit-down, she admitted that she and Brand worked hard to see each other while she was on tour but that it was often a challenge. “Two weeks, that’s the longest we ever go. Anything longer than that is not fun.” November 22, 2011 : On the heels of taking home a special award for having scored five #1 singles from one album ( Teenage Dream ) at the American Music Awards, Perry was forced to respond to fashionistas claiming she was sporting a small baby bump under her pink dress, telling Hollyscoop , “Hell no!” when asked if children were in her near future. November 30, 2011 : Just days after the pregnancy chatter began to die down, rumors that the pair were through began to crop up across the Internet, forcing Perry to take to Twitter to deny the divorce rumblings. “First I’m pregnant & then I’m divorced. What am I ‘All My Children’?! #ericakane #pshhh #ifihadadollarforeverytime,” she tweeted . December 2, 2011 : It was Russell’s turn to address the rumors when he visited “Ellen” earlier this month. Denying the split, the British comic said, “I’ve treated the whole Internet now like it’s a wicked little liar. Yeah. I am really happily married. I’m married to Katy. Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge.” December 25, 2011 : Katy was spotted splashing around in the ocean in Hawaii without Russell and not wearing her wedding ring . Just days later, Brand’s ring finger was bare when photographers caught him out walking in London. December 30, 2011 : With the new year looming, Brand filed for divorce from Perry in Los Angeles Superior Court citing “irreconcilable differences.” No separation date was given, and representatives for Brand and Perry have not yet responded to requests for further comment.
