Robert Pattinson Wonders Why He’s At The Oscars In His #3 MTV Moment

RPattz will debut an exclusive ‘Water for Elephants’ clip and answer fan questions live Friday at 8:56 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By Eric Ditzian Robert Pattinson at the 2009 Academy Awards Photo: Jeff Vespa/WireImage If you ask us, Robert Pattinson officially arrived in Hollywood when “Twilight” won five Golden Popcorn statues at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards — including RPattz’s nods for Best Kiss, Best Fight and Breakthrough Male Performance. But others might argue his Tinseltown coming-out party occurred a few months earlier. In late February ’09, after a weeklong series of rumors had whipped the Twi-nation into a frenzy, Pattinson walked onto an Academy Awards red carpet for the first time. He was not there because he was nominated, but simply because the Academy could not ignore the vampire phenomenon that had ignited the box office — and too many tween hearts to count — the previous fall. It was the biggest night in Hollywood, after all, and its biggest new star just had to be there. Not that he could quite wrap his head around the idea. “It’s insane,” Pattinson exclaimed when we caught up with him on the carpet. “When they first told me about this, I was like, ‘No, no, no, no, no, you’re joking’ — or ‘I’m going to have to do something really stupid like get gunged!’ ” Assuming he’d need to get doused with slime to justify an Oscars appearance, for that reason alone, this awards-season moment deserves to make our countdown of favorite Pattinson moments before the debut of “MTV First: Robert Pattinson” at 8:56 p.m. ET on Friday. But RPattz’s self-deprecating humor aside, it was at the Oscars that his status as the rising young actor in town was solidified. During the ceremony, he took the stage alongside Amanda Seyfried to present a montage of the year’s romantic films, everything from “Mamma Mia!” to “Revolutionary Road” to, yes, “Twilight.” Yet even though footage from the film that made him a star played at the Oscars, he couldn’t quite believe the situation. “I’m so surprised that it worked out the way it did,” he told us of becoming a crush-worthy Hollywood presence. “I was thinking the whole time, ‘I don’t really have the personality to fit into that.’ I’m not really afraid of it. I don’t even know how to play up that. I don’t know if I could ever be cast in a heartthrob role, apart from ‘Twilight,’ which I didn’t know was a heartthrob role.” Don’t miss “MTV First: Robert Pattinson” this Friday at 8:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com. Tune in to see RPattz introduce a new “Water for Elephants” clip, followed by a live 30-minute interview on MTV.com. Tweet questions using the hashtag #askrob to get in the conversation! Let’s hear it for Jonah Hill! The newly thin comedy star has taken to his official Twitter account like a duck to water — or like an impostor to Twitter , as the case may sometimes be — offering fans a peek behind the curtain at the making of 21 Jump Street . GALLERY: The Fighter, and the Best and Worst of Mark Wahlberg

While his castmates Amy Adams, Christian Bale, and Melissa Leo got Oscar nominations for their roles in The Fighter (out this week in a Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack from Paramount Home Entertainment) — with the latter two winning the trophy — Mark Wahlberg’s performance went unheralded. (He did, however, share in the film’s Best Picture nod as one of its producers.) But given the larger-than-life quality that Bale and Leo, in particular, brought to their roles, it seemed like an intentional call on the part of Wahlberg and director David O. Russell to let Wahlberg’s on-screen personality recede a bit so the spotlight could shine elsewhere. Still, he’s just fine in the film, and it inspired me to think of the sublime (and the ridiculous) turns he’s had elsewhere — and no, we’re not counting The Marky Mark Workout in either category.

Katy Perry Offers Merchandise Funds For Japan Earthquake Victims

Joe and Nick Jonas also send their well-wishes to the people of Japan. By Gil Kaufman Two women are surrounded by debris in Japan on Monday Photo: Michael Lavine Katy Perry has been very vocal over the past few days in urging her fans to donate to the Red Cross to help the victims of Friday’s devastating 9.0 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. On Tuesday (March 15), while in Germany for a tour date, Perry requested that fans buy merch at her show to benefit relief efforts. “If u go by the merchandise stand, purchase a KP light-up wand. All proceeds will go 2 to #Japanredcross,” she tweeted. “And when I play … Firework, let’s ignite the light for them tonight. I will be doing this for future shows so be ready!!!” The Jonas Brothers’ Joe Jonas recorded a special message for victims of the disaster on Monday and also encouraged the band’s fans to contribute to the Red Cross to help those affected by the 9.0 tremor, which has caused widespread property destruction, left thousands dead and unleashed a potential nuclear crisis thanks to the damage at a pair of power plants. “Hi everybody, it’s Joe here. I’m just sending a little video message to the victims in Japan that have been hit by this horrible tragedy,” said Jonas, who was sporting a few days’ beard growth and looking visibly pained by the situation. “My thoughts and prayers are with you guys. The ones who’ve lost loved ones, I’m so sorry and I’m praying every day for you guys.” Brother Nick Jonas posted a message as well, saying, “our thoughts are with people in Japan, our prayers are with you as well during this tough time. God bless and we’re all praying for you.” The Brothers’ “Camp Rock” co-star Meaghan Martin recorded a similar video . “I just wanted to send my love and thoughts and prayers to those in Japan affected by the earthquake and the tsunamis in the Pacific,” she said. “And everybody all over the world with friends and family members traveling in those locations. My thoughts and prayers are with you and together we can get through this.” “Twilight Saga” star Ashley Greene spoke to Examiner.com about the delays to “Breaking Dawn” filming that took place on Friday when the movie’s cast was evacuated from their Vancouver set due to tsunami warnings brought on by the quake. “Everything kind of got turned upside down and inside out,” she said of the interruption of the film’s schedule. “We got the least of the brunt of things. We have to be thankful for that. But really, it’s more about that we had to pick up and move to a different location and switch scenes around, but we are certainly moving forward and carrying on. It’s not really going to affect the film too harshly.” Greene urged people to send their prayers and donations to the people affected by the tragedy. “I think it’s something unpredictable and horrible and unexpected and really unfortunate and heartbreaking,” she said. “I certainly send out my prayers and my thoughts to the people and to their loved ones and lost ones. And hopefully, we as Americans are going to do everything we can to help them rebuild.” Also pledging to help in recent days is 1980s boy band Boyz II Men, who are raising money for the victims of the tragedy through the Red Cross. “Boyz II Men have a very special relationship with the people of Japan,” the group wrote in a statement about their goal of raising $100,000 for the relief agency . “We have been going to Japan for the past 20 years and we are deeply concerned for the people of Japan and especially for our friends and fans who reside in Sendai and all the areas affected by this earthquake and tsunami … We can proudly say that Sendai is a beautiful city and we have performed there many times. In fact, we are planning to perform in Sendai in November of 2011 as part of our 20th Year Anniversary Tour.” So far, their efforts have resulted in more than $15,000 in pledges from fans, who’ve contributed amounts ranging from $10 to $1,500. Verizon Wireless announced on Monday that it will offer its customers free calls to Japan from now through April 10. The deal covers most calls to Japan and includes free text messaging and multimedia messaging to Japan for its post-paid customers. Calls made from Japan on a Verizon residential landline will also be free. From P. Diddy to Conan O’Brien, Chris Brown, former “Star Trek” actor George Takei, Lady Gaga, Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda and actor Charlie Sheen, numerous stars have stepped up to help raise funds. On Monday, Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus offered a number of rare band items for sale in an eBay auction that will also benefit the Red Cross. Porn star and goddess supreme Bree Olson confirmed yesterday that she has joined the cast of the upcoming indie comedy Mancation . Bree will play the wife of former N*Syncer Joey Fatone in her first “mainstream” role (meaning she probably won’t take it up the pooper on screen). The raunchy comedy will play to the AVN “Best All-Girl Three Way” award winner’s same-sex strengths, with a key scene involving Bree sticking a silicone sausage in her maid of honor and delivering such leztastic lines as “real dicks are gross.” Bree’s fellow porn star Danica Dillan has also signed on to the film, as well as Danica McKellar, aka Winnie Cooper from The Wonder Years . Now that’s an all-girl three way Mr. Skin would like to see!

Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed, Jarobi reveal to MTV News why they lost ‘trust’ in director Michael Rapaport and share e-mail from producers that prompted ‘red flags.’ By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Sway Calloway A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip Photo: MTV News Q-Tip is finally telling his side of the story regarding Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest, the Michael Rapaport-directed documentary about the legendary group that premiered at Sundance in January. MTV News’ Sway Calloway sat down exclusively with A Tribe Called Quest members Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi, who called in by phone, on Monday (March 14) and the group opened up about the misgivings they’ve been having regarding the doc. Up until now, fans had mostly been privy to Tip’s online commentary, but they went into detail about some of the “red flags” that led them to reconsider their support of the film. (Tribe member Phife was not present.) According to Q-Tip, on December 17, 2010, a couple of weeks after he initially expressed concern about the film, an e-mail was accidently sent to him by one of the producers that read as follows: “First off let’s close the Billing Block and put it on the poster so they can’t get on that. Then we’ll f— them on everything else.” Seated next to Ali in our newsroom, Q-Tip contended that the e-mail conversation clearly stemmed from the group’s early concern about not being credited as producers on the film. “I mean, what you think?” Q-Tip responded rhetorically when Sway asked about his immediate reaction to the e-mail message. “I mean, automatically you revert back, because this is some hip-hop sh– ultimately.” But the rapper didn’t “revert” and violence was averted. Still, Q-Tip maintained that despite this point of contention, the group was still participating in the film’s production and were awaiting edits they requested be made. Our interview also contradicted Rapaport’s assertions to MTV News that Q-Tip was speaking for himself and not the group. Tip said another grievance he had with the filmmaker was the questionable timing of the documentary trailer’s leaking to the Internet. The nearly five-minute preview clip was also erroneously titled, he said. “The same day of the announcement that it came to Sundance, that ‘Beats, Rhymes & Fights’ trailer came out,” Q-Tip said, referring to an earlier version of the title. “All of this stuff is going on and we’re still trying to move forward in good faith and we see this e-mail, inadvertently, which was a godsend. I believe that that was the universe giving that to us and showing us who we were dealing with.” The producers’ response to their own e-mail gaffe only made Q-Tip more agitated. “Their whole comeback to that was, ‘Oh, he’s just frustrated, everybody’s frustrated,’ ” Tip said. But he countered, “When you’re frustrated you say, ‘Yo, I’mma kick his ass. He’s an a–hole, I can’t stand him, I’mma f— him up. I can’t f— with him again.’ Those are things you say out of frustration. But when you say, ‘First off, let’s close the Billing Block and put it on the poster so they can’t get on that. Then we’ll f— them on everything else,’ that’s strategy. “That’s premeditated, first. And second, you feel comfortable to say it to the rest of your team. That means that if the environment is conducive for you to have that kind of banter and that kind of language, God knows what else they’ve been saying amongst themselves. So how can we trust them?” The only member of the group that attended the “Beats, Rhymes and Life” Sundance premiere was Phife . And in spite of the ongoing drama, A Tribe Called Quest still say Rapaport did a great job directing the film and that everyone should see it. Stick with MTV News all week as we reveal more of our interview with A Tribe Called Quest and their concerns about the “Beats, Rhymes and Life” documentary. Related Artists A Tribe Called Quest

Clint Eastwood’s ‘Hereafter’ Pulled After Japan Disaster

Studio says it will no longer screen the Matt-Damon starring drama, which depicts a tsunami, in the quake-ravaged country. By Aly Semigran Hereafter In the wake of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that have ravaged parts of Japan, Clint Eastwood’s afterlife drama “Hereafter” has been pulled from theaters in the country. The film, which stars Matt Damon as a former psychic, features a terrifying scene that depicts the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia. The Associated Press reported on Monday (March 14) that Warner Entertainment Japan Inc. official Satoru Otani said theaters will no longer screen the film, which was initially slated to play until late March. “Hereafter” opened in about 180 theaters in Japan last month. Otani concluded that the tsunami scene in the film was “not appropriate” for moviegoers during this sensitive time. During its run in the U.S., the movie earned roughly $32.7 million at the box office and went on to earn a 2011 Oscar nod for Best Visual Effects. It’s set for a DVD/Blu-ray Stateside release on Tuesday. But “Hereafter” is not the only film being shelved in the days and weeks following the tragedy. Variety reports that director Xiaogang Feng and Japanese-based film company Shochiku have opted to delay the release of “Aftershock.” The film, originally slated to hit theaters nationwide on March 25, is about the Great Tangshan Earthquake of 1976. Shochiku said in a statement, “In view of the devastation caused by the earthquake and out of consideration for the victims and their families … we are delaying the release of ‘Aftershock.’ Additionally, the Anthony Hopkins exorcism-chiller “The Rite” will also be put on hold in Japan. Warner explained in a statement, “We have decided that the content of film is not appropriate given Japan’s current situation.” Moreover, the horror film, which was to arrive in Japanese theaters on March 19, may not have made its release date given the gasoline shortages caused by the natural disasters. For more information on what you can do to help with earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan , head to MTV Act, or text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Do you think it’s wise to pull these films in response to the tragedy in Japan? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Robert Pattinson Talks Kissing Kristen Stewart In His #5 MTV Moment

RPattz will debut an exclusive ‘Water for Elephants’ clip and answer fan questions live on Friday at 8:56 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Larry Carroll Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson on the set of “Twilight” in 2008 Photo: MTV News It was early April 2008, and “Twilight” hadn’t yet become a global box-office phenomenon and set off an epidemic of pop-culture copycats seeking to suck up some of the franchise’s supernatural lifeblood. Back then, when Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were just two up-and-coming actors making a movie for an independent studio, MTV News traveled to the film’s Portland, Oregon, set to find out just what was happening with this gothic-tinged love story everyone seemed to be buzzing about. The duo were alternately shy and unguarded, jokey and awkward, and generally far different than they are these days, with the press invading every aspect of their personal and professional lives. That’s why, even years later, our first-ever “Twilight” interview remains one of our favorite RPattz moments. And as we count down the days until “MTV First: Robert Pattinson” airs next Friday at 8:56 p.m. ET, we hauled the footage from our vaults. “Kristen’s the best actress of her generation, and that’s why I wanted to do this movie. I don’t know why she is, but she’s better than everyone else,” Pattinson told us, breaking out into laughter as he kept the attention on his co-star and away from himself. “You don’t want me to talk about you?” Stewart asked, before doing just that. “I think he’s really handsome.” Throughout the interview, they exchanged knowing glances, laughed at themselves and each other, and paused for long periods as they searched for the right word or anecdote. This was the “Twilight” stars, pre-media training, and it’s utterly endearing. Can you imagine them now so openly discussing what it’s like to smooch on camera? “His teeth are pretty sharp,” Stewart laughed. “It’s great. I like it.” “Every time, I just try to kill her,” Pattinson added. “And [Bella] likes it,” Stewart said. “She’s a total sadomasochist, if you think about it.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Water for Elephants.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
