‘Battle: Los Angeles’ Tops Friday Box Office

Alien invasion flick bests ‘Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Rango’ to claim top spot, while animated ‘Mars Needs Moms’ tanks. By Shawn Adler Michelle Rodriguez in “Battle: Los Angeles” Photo: Sony Pictures It showcases an epic battle between aliens and humans, but it turns out that the biggest winner of the weekend isn’t going to be Aaron Eckhart or the extra-terrestrials he faces in “Battle: Los Angeles,” but an entirely different, third combatant: the film itself. Led by an all-star cast headlined by the “Thank You For Smoking” star, “Battle: Los Angeles” topped all comers at the Friday night box office with an estimated $13.5 million from 3,417 theaters. The story of a surprise war waged by aliens for control of Earth, the flick should eek out approximately $40 for the weekend and another number one opening for the star of “The Dark Knight” in his first return to big budget action. The secret to the film’s success? Not treating an alien invasion movie like an alien invasion movie, director Jonathan Liebesman told MTV News . “This is a more down and dirty alien movie,” Liebesman said. “This is like if [‘Bourne Supremacy’ director] Paul Greengrass got a camera, saw some aliens, and shot it from the point of view of a platoon. It’s literally like ‘Black Hawk Down,’ if there were aliens in there. Like Iraqi war footage, but with aliens running around.” You’d be forgiven, meanwhile, for saying of the second place film, “My, what a big gross you have,” as the Brothers Grimm by way of Stephanie Meyer revisionist fairy tale “Red Riding Hood” scared up $5.7 million to claw its way near the top. The Catherine Hardwick directed and Amanda Seyfried starring film may seem to be similar to that little Kristen Stewart movie, but that doesn’t mean it’s just “Twilight” with a cape, Seyfried told MTV. “It’s a bummer that that’s what’s happening,” Seyfried told us . “I mean, it does surround a girl coming of age in a love triangle, but that’s a lot of movies. The truth is, it’s an entirely different story.” In third place, last weekend’s winner “Rango” managed a very healthy $5.5 million. The Johnny Depp starring flick about a chameleon who finds himself leading a small desert town as sheriff should bring its total to approximately $70 million by weekend’s close. In fourth place, “The Adjustment Bureau” starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt managed a $3.4 million Friday. The biggest disappointment of the week was “Mars Needs Moms,” the newest animated film from Disney. Using motion capture technology and based on a story from Pulitzer Prize winner Berkeley Breathed, the reportedly expensive film managed just $1.8 million Friday and a fifth place finish. Among other films, “Beastly” scored $1.6 million for a sixth place finish, while “Just Go With It” managed an eighth place finish and $1.2 million. The Adam Sandler led comedy should pass $100 million sometime early next week. Rounding out the rest of the top ten, “Hall Pass” earned $1.5 million to come in seventh, “The King’s Speech” grabbed $1 million to finish ninth, and “Unknown” ran away with $975,000 to land in tenth.

Sarah Palin "Gritting Teeth" Over Game Change Film

In a sitdown with Fox News, Sarah Palin discussed the upcoming HBO film Game Change , based on the ’08 Presidential race. Julianne Moore will play Palin . She doesn’t sound too happy about that – or the film in general. “Well, I am all about job creation, and I guess I could provide some of these gals who pretend like they’re me some job security,” she joked (we think). Sarah Palin Talks Game Change That was funny and light-hearted enough, but the strange thing is how bitter she seems about the film, in which she is but one of many players … “If they’re of the mind of spreading the wealth around,” she added, “perhaps they want to spring for one of my kids’ braces or something as they capitalize on pretending to be me … I’ll just grit my teeth and bear whatever comes what may with that movie.” Is a movie about a historic election that crazy a concept? By that logic, The Social Network basically capitalized off Mark Zuckerberg, making him look like an arrogant swindler in the process in fact. He responded by donating $100 million to public schools in Newark, N.J. Just saying …

‘Red Riding Hood’ Star Amanda Seyfried Shoots Down Comparisons to ‘Twilight’

‘The truth is, it’s an entirely different story,’ actress says. By Aly Semigran Amanda Seyfried in “Red Riding Hood” Photo: Warner Bros. Mythical folklore. Catherine Hardwicke. A steamy, young love triangle involving a pretty girl and two cute guys, one of which may be a wolf. There was no doubt that when the formula used to create the revamped fairy tale “Red Riding Hood” was revealed, “Twilight” comparisons were bound to be made. It’s a roadblock that its star Amanda Seyfried, who plays the film’s scarlet-caped protagonist, is entirely aware of. MTV News caught up with Seyfried to discuss the film, which opens in theaters this Friday, and why moviegoers shouldn’t go in expecting another “Twilight.” “It’s a bummer that that’s what’s happening,” Seyfried said of the inevitable “Twilight” association. The 25-year-old actress, who admitted she doesn’t like when “an audience has [certain] expectations,” recognized that a lot of it certainly has to do with “Red Riding Hood” director Catherine Hardwicke, who was at the helm of the first “Twilight Saga” movie. “That’s her movie,” Seyfried acknowledged. Adding even more fuel to the “Twilight” fire is Seyfried’s “Red Riding Hood” co-star Billy Burke, who plays her father in the film and who is known to Twi-hards as Bella Swan’s dad. “Can’t forget about that,” she said with a smile, regarding Burke’s involvement with both projects. Still, she and her castmates, including her onscreen love interests Max Irons and Shiloh Fernandez, couldn’t help but poke fun of the situation on set. “We’d make jokes about [Hardwicke] calling us Kristen [Stewart] and Rob [Pattinson] and Taylor [Lautner],” Seyfried told MTV. Interestingly enough, Fernandez was one of the actors originally considered for the role of brooding vampire Edward Cullen in “Twilight.” But Seyfried remains adamant about audiences being able to distinguish the difference between this film and the “Twilight Saga.” “Red Riding Hood” is a new take on the classic fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood” that follows a young woman named Valerie, who is torn between choosing from two men, all while her small village is terrorized by a mysterious wolf. “Yeah, I mean it does surround a girl coming of age in a love triangle, but that’s a lot of movies,” Seyfried said. “The truth is, it’s an entirely different story. “I think audiences are going to be really surprised when they end up seeing this movie because … there’s so many elements and there’s so much going on,” she assured, giving her own synopsis of the PG-13 chiller, “It’s a murder mystery as well as a coming-of-age movie, and there’s a lot of tension and it’s scary. All those elements combine to be thrilling, I think.” Do you think “Red Riding Hood” will be able to set itself apart from “Twilight”? Tell us in the comments. Emily Browning Bares Sleeping Boobies for Upcoming Film

Mr. Skin does not mince words when it comes to Zack’s Snyder’s epic nudity fumble Sucker Punch , and assumes that the film’s lack of boobs is a sick, sick joke based on its title. A gang of hot young female mental patients fight bad guys with samurai swords and NOT ONE of them takes her top off? That’s practically the definition of a sucker punch here at Skin Central. They might as well have called it Bait and Switch. Thankfully star Emily Browning has taken pity on frustrated male fans and recently shot her first nude scene for the upcoming film Sleeping Beauty. (Another misleading title; the film is not an erotic update of the fairy tale, but a sex work drama.) The 22-year-old Australian actress discusses the experience in a new interview for W magazine, where she said: “It was terrifying, but being able to push myself was really cool.” Keep on pushing yourself, Emily, and we’ll keep on pulling!

‘Captain America’ Villain Red Skull Photo Hits The Web

Plus: Director Joe Johnston talks to Entertainment Weekly about the politics of Captain America and ‘The Avengers.’ By Kara Warner Chris Evans in “Captain America: The First Avenger” Photo: Marvel Entertainment For all the “Captain America” fans who have been excited by the teaser trailer and magazine features , there have been just as many complaints about the fact that not much has yet been seen of the film’s chief and formidable villain, Red Skull. Luckily for those folks, Entertainment Weekly has the exclusive first look at genre-film favorite Hugo Weaving all red and scary-looking. EW also scored a meaty interview with the film’s director, Joe Johnston, in which he addresses a wide range of subjects, including why a superhuman can be sympathetic, the politics of Captain America (played by Chris Evans) and how much he had to think about Joss Whedon’s spin-off film “The Avengers.” “What I like is he’s not a superhero in the true sense of the word,” Johnston explained of how Steve Rogers/ Captain America is unlike Superman or Spider-Man. “He becomes a superhero but doesn’t have any superpowers. He is just the best possible human specimen. Imagine the fastest, strongest Olympian athlete. Add 30 percent. That’s Steve Rogers.” Regarding the character’s historic and politically charged past (the first issue of the Marvel comic featured the now-famous cover image of Captain America punching Hitler in the jaw), Johnston said that although his film is indeed a period piece, it isn’t a “flag waver.” “He was created as a propaganda tool, but he soon became much more than that,” Johnston told the magazine. “There are all these incarnations over the decades, but the film is not a flag waver. It’s about a guy who wants to do the right thing. And that transcends all nationalities and borders.” Finally, there has been much ado over the fact that several characters who have and will have their own standalone films will come together for Whedon’s highly anticipated “Avengers” movie. “I really didn’t [think about it],” Johnston said. “Because this was a period film, because this was the origin story, I didn’t have to worry about ‘The Avengers,’ which was a present-day story,” he explained. “We have present-day bookends and bring Cap back at the end, and then I basically hand him off. And ‘The Avengers’ is its own thing.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Captain America: The First Avenger.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
