Roger Ebert Says This NYC Blizzard Short Film Should Win an Oscar

We’ve gotten some nifty time-lapse videos of the East Coast blizzard, but in terms of capturing the beauty, hardship and sheer scope of the weather, Jamie Stuart’s snow-covered, New-York-shot ode to the Soviet montage is the end-all. Roger Ebert is already calling for the film to receive an Academy Award because of its quality and technical profiency as well as its “role as homage.” Indeed, Stuart’s short Idiot with a Tripod does an admirable job paying tribute to Dziga Vertov’s 1929 silent classic Man With a Movie Camera while still capturing the trials and tribulations that people (and dogs) endured at the hands of the snowstorm.

Stephen Dorff Describes ‘Immortals’ As ‘ ‘300’ Meets ‘Gladiator’ ‘

‘I could end up having horns coming out of my head, and wings,’ Dorff joked about the final product. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Stephen Dorff Photo: MTV News For those anxious to see more of Stephen Dorff after his critically acclaimed role in Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere,” you won’t have to wait too long to see him back on the big screen. Dorff’s next film is the buzzworthy “Immortals,” directed by visionary filmmaker Tarsem Singh (“The Fall,” “The Cell”), which also stars Mickey Rourke, Kellan Lutz, Henry Cavill and Freida Pinto. When MTV News caught up with Dorff recently, we asked him for his take on the film. “So much of that movie is going to be done in post [production],” he said, adding that he has no idea what it will look like when it’s finished. “I could end up having horns coming out of my head, and wings,” Dorff joked. “I don’t know what’s going to happen.” The veteran actor described “Immortals” as ” ‘300’-meets-‘Gladiator.’ ” “[There’s] a lot of testosterone,” he said. “A beautiful girl, Freida Pinto, brings the innocence and femininity to the movie and she’s really great. I found her great to work with.” With regard to his onscreen action with Rourke, who plays the villainous King Hyperion, Dorff said that again, due to the amount of visual effects that will need to be added to the film, he’s unsure of what the final product will look like. “Mickey kinda is in this mask for most of the movie, so I don’t know how it’s going to be in the final cut, but he looked great. I had most of my [scenes] with Freida and this other character [Theseus, played by Henry Cavill]. John Hurt is in it as well.” Dorff went on to say that he is sure the film will be great, but that the larger scope of the production was a big change from the intimate environment he worked in on “Somewhere.” “Whenever you do something that big — especially coming from ‘Somewhere’ — I always get a little nervous,” Dorff admitted. “But I have to keep moving until Sophia does another movie, or another filmmaker I’d love to work with does another movie. … I have to hopefully pick the right things. I’m trying to be careful with what I do next,” he said. Daniel Craig And Rachel Weisz Step Out As A Couple

Pair met while filming ‘Dream House.’ By Terri Schwartz Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig (file) Photo: Donald Bowers/ Getty Natalie Portman , Ginnifer Goodwin and Hugh Hefner aren’t the only ones who had some romantic luck over the long Christmas weekend. Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz cozied up in southwestern England while taking a break from filming their upcoming movie, “Dream House.” British newspaper News of the World published photos of Craig and Weisz holding hands in the snowy countryside of Dorset and then walking into a pub together. A customer told the paper that “they were clinging to each other like honeymooners. The chemistry was obvious.” Another onlooker said they “looked like a romantic couple in a film. They were laughing and chatting and hanging on to each other’s words and stopping to take photos of each other.” The couple were also reported to have shared a cottage hideaway. Sparks easily could have started flying on the set of “Dream House,” which stars Craig and Weisz as a married couple. The supernatural thriller takes a turn for the worse when the couple moves with their two daughters to a quiet New England town, and they find out their new home was the site of a murder that claimed the life of a young mother and her two children. Naomi Watts also stars in the film as a neighbor with close ties to the deceased family. In November, Weisz split from “Black Swan” director, whom she was with for nine years. Craig also parted ways with his producer girlfriend Satsuki Mitchell earlier this year.

‘Little Fockers’ Celebrates At The Holiday Box Office

‘Fockers’ won a meager first-place prize, while ‘True Grit’ blasted its way to second place. By Josh Wigler Ben Stiller in “Little Fockers” Photo: Universal Studios/DW Studios ‘Tis the season to be jolly, but while the holiday spirit was present in millions of households this past weekend, it wasn’t felt with nearly as much fanfare at the movies. It was a fairly quiet weekend at the box office this holiday season, with Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro’s “Little Fockers” leading the pack with an estimated $34 million from Friday through Sunday and a five-day total of $48.3 million. But while Jack still has his eye on Greg, few people entered the circle of trust this go-around, as “Fockers,” the second sequel to the critically acclaimed “Meet the Parents,” failed to match the success of its predecessor “Meet the Fockers,” which earned $70.5 million in its first five days in 2004. Indeed, the second-place showing for “True Grit” was more impressive than the first-place “Fockers” in many respects. For one, the Jeff Bridges-starring Western drew $36.8 million since opening on Wednesday of last week, nearly crushing its entire $38 million production budget in a single session. “True Grit” also marked the single-best opening for any Coen brothers movie to date, easily surpassing the $19.1 million “Burn After Reading” earned in 2008. “Tron Legacy” remained on the gaming grid this weekend with a third-place finish worth $25.6 million. The movie suffered a steep 54 percent drop from its opening performance last weekend, leaving some to wonder whether Disney’s decision to revitalize the science-fiction franchise was a sound one. The weekend’s biggest disappointment was Jack Black’s “Gulliver’s Travels,” which debuted Saturday and ended the weekend in seventh place with $7.2 million. Releasing the film on Christmas Day was a risky gamble on Fox’s part, and despite the message that “Gulliver” has to offer, size really does matter when it comes to business, and unfortunately for the studio, the opening numbers on “Gulliver” are simply too small to consider the film anything but a flop. The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Little Fockers” ($34 million) #2 “True Grit” ($25.6 million) #3 “Tron Legacy” ($20.1 million) #4 “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” ($10.8 million) #5 “Yogi Bear” ($8.8 million) Upcoming Releases It’s going to be another quiet weekend at the box office next week, with smaller-budget dramas “Another Year” and “Blue Valentine” sneaking in as the weekend’s only new releases with a combined total of 10 theaters between the two of them. Stephen Dorff Talks ‘Somewhere,’ Career Ups And Downs

‘I thought I was a sell-out, playing a vampire,’ the actor says about his memorable role in ‘Blade.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Stephen Dorff Photo: MTV News Although his role in “Somewhere” was one of the most challenging of his career, Stephen Dorff is grateful to writer/director Sofia Coppola for giving him the opportunity to play a character who is a complete departure from the menacing, murderous types audiences are used to seeing him portray. When MTV News caught up with the actor, he explained that “Somewhere” is the kind of independent art film he was most interested in at the start of his career — which has spanned more than two decades — but when Hollywood started calling, he reluctantly veered into bigger films playing bad boys and villains. “[After the 1992 coming-of-age drama ‘Power of One,’] Hollywood was coming to me, but I was kind of resisting,” Dorff said of his early years in the business. “I really wanted to make art films. I loved working on movies like ‘I Shot Andy Warhol’ [and] ‘S.F.W.’ I liked doing edgier things. I was kind of into Nirvana, I was into rebelling against my childhood.” He added, “I wasn’t really interested in playing vulnerable, sweet parts, like I played in ‘Power of One’ and ‘Backbeat,’ so in a way I think I did that to my own image. I kind of fought it. Then, when it came time to wanting to do [a sensitive role again], it wasn’t necessarily there for me. “Then ‘Blade’ came around and I thought that was the end of my career,” Dorff admitted. “Because I thought I was a sell-out, playing a vampire.” Dorff said that those reservations eventually subsided and that he enjoyed making the action-horror flick. “I had a good time with [director] Steve Norrington,” Dorff said. “I knew he was talented. I had seen this little teeny movie he did and I knew this guy was going to make a good movie.” Dorff went on to say that now he feels that “Blade,” as well as the first “Matrix” movie, were well ahead of their time with regard to what they opened up for filmmaking. “Now we have so many comic-book movies and they’re kind of regenerating the same movie,” he explained. “In a way, there’s not much originality to them. I like that we did ours earlier.” Dorff said that leading up to and after “Blade,” he tried going for less dark roles, but that he couldn’t resist opportunities to work with the likes of Jack Nicholson (1997’s “Blood and Wine”) and other great actors, so he became typecast. “Up until now, really, this movie is the first time somebody like Sofia [Coppola] said, ‘Well there’s another side to Stephen, maybe he can play the leading man, maybe he can be a little sweeter and not have to kill everybody,” Dorff suggested. “It’s nice that now I get texts after ‘Somewhere’ [that say,] ‘You make such a good dad!’ ” he reveals about his family members’ reactions to his performance in the film. “It’s so different than ‘Why were you so scary and mean?’ ”

Jeff Bridges Heaps Praise On ‘True Grit’ Co-Star Hailee Steinfeld

Bridges calls the 14-year-old actress’ performance ‘remarkable.’ By Terry Schwartz Jeff Bridges Photo: MTV News With the Coen brothers’ “True Grit” making its way into theaters on Christmas weekend, all eyes likely will be turning to newcomer Hailee Steinfeld, who plays the film’s young leading lady, Mattie Ross. In her first major role, the 14-year-old actress ultimately has to carry the first portion of the movie, and her performance has been garnering some serious buzz during this awards season. When MTV News caught up with Steinfeld’s co-star Jeff Bridges while he was promoting “True Grit,” he said he was impressed by the intensity of her performance while they were filming on set. “What a tough, challenging role for a seasoned actor. All that dialogue, kind of tricky way of speaking. Thirteen-year-old girl, never been in a movie, and she comes up with that performance,” Bridges gushed. “Isn’t that remarkable?” Steinfeld found herself surrounded by a full cast and crew of cinema veterans. The Coen brothers won an Oscar for directing 2008’s “No Country for Old Men” and have been nominated two other times, Bridges took home a Best Actor Oscar for his role in last year’s “Crazy Heart,” and Matt Damon and Josh Brolin both have received Academy Award nods in acting categories in the past. But Bridges said Steinfeld didn’t need any acting tips from himself or any of the other castmembers. “I might have slipped out a tip once or twice, and I always regret when I would do that. It’s almost like a reflex action — you can’t help but put yourself into the other actor’s position sometimes,” he explained. “I always appreciate a tip from some guy, one of the other players, but no, I let her run free. The brothers directed her beautifully.” With all the buzz Steinfeld has been getting for her “True Grit” performance, she now is one of the main actresses being looked at to play another strong female character: Katniss Everdeen in “The Hunger Games.” When Steinfeld spoke with MTV recently while promoting “True Grit,” she said it “would definitely be an honor” to even be considered for the Katniss role. “I didn’t even realize that people were mentioning my name,” she said. “It’s every actor’s dream to be recognized for something that they love to do, and to get recognized for that is pretty amazing. I thank the people out there who think that.” Check out everything we’ve got on “True Grit.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
