‘Tron: Legacy’ Premiere Attended By A-List Stars

Will Ferrell, Tom Cruise and Joe Jonas were among the celebrities who turned up at the Hollywood gala for the sci-fi sequel. By Ryan J. Downey Will Ferrell at the “Tron: Legacy” premiere Photo: John Sciulli/ Getty Images HOLLYWOOD — An entire block of Hollywood Blvd. was virtually transformed into the computer world of grids and gladiators on Saturday at the premiere of “Tron: Legacy.” Blue lights, lasers, smoke machines, white-clad “Sirens,” black-bob-wigged publicists brandishing light discs and at least one light cycle adorned a blue carpet leading to Disney’s El Capitan Theater as hundreds of fans looked on. Will Ferrell, Tom Cruise, Joe Jonas, Ana de la Reguera (“Cowboys and Aliens”), Patrick Fugit (“Almost Famous”), Jena Malone (“Saved!”) and the film’s stars, including Jeff Bridges, Olivia Wilde and Garret Hedlund, turned up to watch the sequel to “Tron,” the forward-thinking 1982 classic that pit man vs. machine in a virtual reality. With premiere production values that would make an arena rock band blush, the atmosphere was as charged as a “Tron” arena battle. “I don’t want to downplay [the first film’s premiere] because it was what it was then, but this? The excitement level is that much more and I think that’s truly the ‘Tron’ legacy,” said Bruce Boxleitner, who played Alan Bradley and his computerized counterpart, the title character, in both the original and the sequel. “After twenty-something years, I’d go, ‘Well, I don’t know. If they haven’t made [a sequel] by now …’ [And then] we got the word. I was in right from the get-go.” “Tron: Legacy” director Joseph Kosinski — who will next tackle the re-imagining of another Disney sci-fi property from the ’80s, “The Black Hole” — was brimming with pride now that the long-in-gestation project was finally see the (blue) light of day. “It’s been a three-year process with thousands of talented people all over the world working on this movie with me. I’m really proud of the team and proud of the film. I’m excited for people to finally see it,” he said. Garrett Hedlund plays Sam Flynn, son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) from the first film, who sets out to find his missing father and ends up transported to the world of “Tron.” The 26-year-old actor has been on something of a journey himself: He’s got “Country Strong” debuting this month and just wrapped “On the Road” that morning before hopping on a plane for the “Tron: Legacy” premiere. “It’s a wonderful night, isn’t it?” he beamed, while admitting to being a bit exhausted. Taking in the grand spectacle unfolding on the blue carpet, he added, “I’ve tried to imagine what this night would be like but, up until now, I’ve never been more surprised.” Welsh actor Michael Sheen — whom astute “Twilight” fans still recognize without the getup he wears as Aro — plays Castor in “Tron: Legacy,” and shared Hedlund and Boxleitner’s awe at the “spare no expense” vibe of the premiere and the general marketing rollout behind the picture. “It’s nice to know that Disney has so much confidence in the film and they’re prepared to get behind it so much,” said Sheen. “I’ve seen the film. I can see why they’re so confident. When you’ve got a film like this, I guess that’s the time to bring out your big guns. It’s great. I love the fact that the look of the premiere reflects the look of the film as well, ’cause that’s such a strong part of the ‘Tron’ world. I’m a fan of these films more than I am an actor in them in a way. So it’s just great to be a part of it.” The models dressed as “sirens” who stood on the blue carpet with stoic seriousness — even as Will Ferrell attempted to get one of them to crack a smile — were joined by an actress who portrayed one of the sirens in the film, Beau Garrett. She was accompanied by her parents and two best friends at the premiere. “This is crazy. It’s so fun. It’s really kind of lovely,” laughed Garrett. “[My parents] are like, losing their minds. My dad is beaming right now. So this is a trip! I had no idea what I was getting into.” Daft Punk, whose music lights up the film’s soundtrack, walked the carpet as well while their dance-music contemporary, Boys Noize, served as DJ at the afterparty. “Tron: Legacy” hits theaters nationwide this Friday. Gift Guide: The Frederico Fellini Horror Film You Haven’t Seen

From Movieline’s 2010 Holiday Gift Guide In 1968, filmmaking giants Frederico Fellini, Louis Malle and Roger Vadim all contributed an Edgar Allen Poe adaptation to a mostly-forgotten horror omnibus called Spirits of the Dead . It’s been unavailable in the U.S. for a long time, but Arrow Films has finally released a new region-free Blu-ray of the film. And while Malle and Vadim’s entries are a bit underwhelming, Fellini’s psychedelic, totally insane take on Never Bet the Devil Your Head starring Terence Stamp makes this Blu-ray an essential for cinephiles and horror buffs alike.

Get to Know the Characters of True Grit with 4 New Clips

These four clips from the Coen Brothers’ True Grit are a welcome departure from the numerous “advanced clips” these days, which often turn out to be variations on scenes that played out more economically in the trailer. Here, we get a nice sense of the style of the movie as well as an engaging introduction to each of the major characters. My personal favorite is the first argument between Matt Damon and Jeff Bridges, which honestly doesn’t do much to back up the Coens’ claim that the film is departure in tone . But that’s not necessarily a bad thing…

Angelina Jolie’s Bosnian War Film Producer Brushes Off Controversy

Producing partner Graham King also tells MTV News that when he visited the set, first-time director Jolie had ‘total command of that crew.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Angelina Jolie Photo: Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images Last week, Angelina Jolie hit back against criticism of her still-untitled Bosnian War drama, which has been the focus of complaints by a women’s group, by simply saying, “There’s one person who has a gripe.” Jolie’s producing partner on the film, Graham King, echoed that sentiment when he told MTV News recently that the criticism has received too much attention. “Yeah, a little bit,” he said, laughing. At issue has been a rumored plot line said to involve a rape victim falling in love with her captor. A rep for Jolie has already said there is no such story line, though the full plot remains shrouded in mystery. “There are many twists in the plot that address the sensitive nature of the relationship between the main characters, and that will be revealed once the film is released,” Jolie said . Nonetheless, the controversy has persisted, with Bakira Hasecic, the president of the Association of Women Victims of War, filing a complaint about the movie with the United Nations refugee agency. When we sat down with King in Paris, where he was promoting “The Tourist” (another project of his in which Jolie stars), the producer was not only quick to dismiss the criticism but also to speak highly of Jolie’s work on her directorial debut. “I went to that set two weeks ago, and she had total command of that crew,” he said. “It was just a real joy to see her behind that monitor, and I think it’s going to be a really good piece of material.” Whether Brad Pitt will play a part remains to be seen. Recent reports have suggested Jolie’s husband will pop up in a cameo. All Jolie would tell us in Paris was “Possibly,” and King was similarly cagey: “We’ll see,” he said. Ryan Gosling Calls ‘Blue Valentine’ A ‘Companion Piece’ To ‘The Notebook’

Actor says his new film is about ‘the nitty gritty of trying to stay in love.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Ryan Gosling Photo: MTV News Ryan Gosling is set to appear on the big screen this month in a new film about love. Of course, while he might forever be remembered as the lovelorn Noah in “The Notebook,” he’s certainly weaving a different story about relationships in the darker “Blue Valentine.” So, does Gosling think fans of the sweeping Nicholas Sparks love story will find anything to relate to in this gritty, sexy new flick? “I think that ‘Blue Valentine’ is a nice companion piece to ‘The Notebook,’ because I feel like both are true,” he told MTV News. “That they’re both possible, and the truth is somewhere in the middle. But I feel like ‘Blue Valentine’ kind of picks up where ‘The Notebook’ leaves off.” While “The Notebook” deals with the courtship of two people who are head-over-heels for each other, “Blue Valentine” looks deeper at what happens after two people think they’ve gotten their happy ending. “There’s a huge period of time which isn’t in [‘The Notebook’]: The practical, day-to-day living with one another isn’t dealt with in that film,” he explained. “I would meet people when I did ‘The Notebook’ who would come up to me on the street and say, ‘That happened to me; that’s my parents story,’ because these people are saying that’s not realistic love, doesn’t really happen for people like that. “That’s not true, because I’ve met so many people that told me that that’s their story or their parents’ story,” he continued. “But I’ve also talked to a lot of people now that feel like this film is more about what it’s like the day to day, the nitty gritty of trying to stay in love.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Q-Tip Explains His Issues With A Tribe Called Quest Documentary

‘It’s not only Tribe’s story; it’s all of ours,’ MC says of his concerns. By Jayson Rodriguez Q-Tip Photo: Mark Von Holden/WireImage Last week, Q-Tip stirred things up online when he tweeted that he was not in support of Michael Rapaport’s A Tribe Called Quest documentary . The MC and the director remained silent on the matter, refusing interview requests from a number of outlets. On Tuesday, however, Q-Tip appeared on satellite-radio station Shade 45’s morning show and explained his message. The veteran lyricist spoke with fill-in host Elliott Wilson of Rap Radar and said his opinion has nothing to do with his group being the focus of the doc, but with his role as a producer. “I’m a producer on this film; Tribe is a producer on this film,” he said. “When I speak, I’m speaking for the whole group. A lot of people think I’m speaking individually, even though I addressed it as ‘I’m not supporting’ it. In reality, as producers, there’s just different things that need to be done, edit-wise. The sentiment of the film is there. We feel like it’s 80 percent here. It’s just not there [all the way].” The Tribe MC said he and his groupmates have a final say over the project, per the agreement they made with Rapaport, an actor and first-time filmmaker. Although Tip wouldn’t specify the exact nature of his discomfort with the project, he said because the project is the first of its kind — “an extensive cinematic documentary about a hip-hop group” — it’s more than just a Tribe issue. “There’s so much riding on this,” he said. “It’s not only Tribe’s story; it’s all of ours. So we got to make sure sh– is down right.” Will you check out the Tribe documentary? Let us know in the comments. Related Artists Q-Tip A Tribe Called Quest
