‘Machete’ Director Robert Rodriguez Reveals Trick To Onscreen Nudity

He front-loads his movies with nakedness, then ‘in your mind, everyone is naked the rest of the movie.’ By Kara Warner Robert Rodriguez Photo: MTV News “Machete” was originally conceived as a fake trailer in “Grindhouse,” but fan demand convinced director Robert Rodriguez to make the story into a full-length feature, which opens Friday. The film, which revolves around the titular character and his attempt to clear his sullied name, is full of blood, action, crazy weaponry and beautiful naked and half-naked women. When we caught up with the “Sin City” and “Spy Kids” filmmaker recently, we asked how he decides when to play the naked card and when to avoid it. “Ask my sister. She tells me, ‘You need to have more hot chicks in this movie!’ ” Rodriguez said, playfully deferring to his co-editor and co-writer, Alvaro Rodriguez. “I have a trick,” he admitted. “I did this in ‘Sin City’ too. People say, ‘There’s so much nudity in “Sin City.” ‘ I say, ‘No, if you look close, there’s only [some] at the very beginning.’ ” Rodriguez said showing a lot of skin from the get-go makes people think they’re seeing more than they do. “If you do it at the beginning of the movie, in your mind, everyone is naked the rest of the movie if they’re scantily clad — because that’s how the comics are drawn,” he said. “[‘Machete’] was the same way.” Rodriguez cited a particular scene at the beginning of the film, in which Machete tries to save a beautiful (and naked) woman, as his prime example. He said the decision to have the actress appear sans clothing throughout the entire scene helps enable extra tricks in the plot that wouldn’t work otherwise. “That was the first scene I wrote. There’s got to be a girl that he goes to save and she’s naked and he’s having to run out with this naked girl over his shoulder, but then you put a twist on it,” Rodriguez explained, continuing with a pseudo-spoiler . “She ends up working for the other side and tricking him by being nude. That way he doesn’t see it coming. Everything else, he’d be able to see a trick coming,” he said, adding that there isn’t much more skin in the rest of the film (save for a topless scene in a pool). “It’s really just that trick.” “Machete,” starring Danny Trejo, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Robert De Niro and Don Johnson, opens Friday. What do you think of Rodriguez’s trick? Will it affect how you watch the film now? Let us know in the comments! Angelina Jolie And Johnny Depp Have ‘Incredible Chemistry,’ ‘Tourist’ Director Says

‘Johnny and Angie just got along so well,’ Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp in “The Tourist” Photo: Sony Pictures What does an up-and-coming director do after winning the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film? If you’re the talented Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, you do not go to Disneyland; you go out and secure the talents of megawatt actors Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie for your next feature. The already heavily-hyped film in question is “The Tourist,” loosely based on the French thriller “Anthony Zimmer.” When MTV News caught up with von Donnersmarck, we talked international intrigue, the challenges of shooting in Venice and why everyone falls in love with Johnny Depp (including his co-star Paul Bettany , who confessed his feelings to us last month). MTV : Given the story’s twists and turns, what can you reveal about the plot? Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck : I can see already that you were trying to wrangle some information out of Paul. [Incredibly enough, the busy director somehow found time to read our Bettany interview.] It’s a love story, that’s for sure. Imagine a woman who is just so elegant and sophisticated and educated and has lived in that world and now, through a whole set of circumstances, suddenly falls in love with a guy who is not any of those things, and it just somehow confuses her whole world because that was not meant to happen. She had it all worked out, she had this grand master plan, and neither he nor she had thought it possible that they would fall in love with each other. I have to keep the real details a secret otherwise you won’t have any fun seeing it. MTV : Is the film a remake of “Anthony Zimmer” or an interpretation? Von Donnersmarck : I’d say, in a way, the film is inspired by a whole set of films. There’s a lot of “Anthony Zimmer” in it, which is the French screenplay that they optioned the rights for, there’s a lot of “North by Northwest,” “To Catch a Thief,” “The Thomas Crown Affair,” the “Thin Man” series, “The Pink Panther” — there’s just a whole sweep of films that we used as inspiration and, certainly, there’s quite a few films that informed the film. MTV : How did you assemble such a spectacular cast? Von Donnersmarck : I think if you create a part in the screenplay and what you describe to actors where they can show some of their acting muscle, then great actors will be attracted to those parts and will be game for it. I think what people forget often when they talk about such great stars as Angelina and Johnny, they forget that what they are, really, are actors. They’re actors with a capital “A,” but they’re much more actors than they are stars, and I think that these parts were just right for them as actors. They can really show what they can do. Angelina is so charming and delicate and feminine and strong and everything at the same time that I think when I talked to her about that part and when we worked on the screenplay together, she saw that she could really be able to do something with that part, and the same for Johnny. He shows so much of his own complexity in this part. He’s so winning, so charming, so funny, like he is in real life. I think in many ways, this part is quite close to who he is in real life. He is the most funny and charming person you’ll have ever met. MTV : Well, we already know Paul fell in love with him … Von Donnersmarck : It’s impossible not to. Everybody does. Same with Angelina. She is so much fun. Also, Johnny and Angie just got along so well, that was something I could sense straight from the first meeting that we had, the three of us. Believe it or not, Angie and Johnny had never met. Through all the years that they’ve been king and queen of Hollywood, they had never actually physically met, so I was the first person to ever bring them together. So if nothing else, that was a really historical moment. They just got along so well from the first moment they met that I knew it was going to be a lot of fun making this film. I probably have hours worth of bloopers where they were just laughing because they had so much fun inventing stuff on the fly and letting their incredible creativity run free. MTV : How difficult was shooting in Venice? Von Donnersmarck : It was difficult, and that’s why most films they do all the interior stuff in studio and go to Venice for maybe three weeks to shoot all the exteriors. We really shot the entirety of the picture — except the scenes that take place in Paris — we shot them in Venice. There’s a chance that we would have captured more of Venice than has been captured before; that was certainly our aim. When Angie and I first talked about it, we said, “Let’s really make Venice a character. Let’s have it be about Johnny’s character, about her character, but also about Venice. Let’s really shoot it there.” Luckily, our producer was game for this, Graham King, so before we knew it, we were all in Venice and lived there for half a year, and in some of the most fantastic places along the Grand Canal, and I never set foot in a car or a truck for half a year. MTV : Going from “The Lives of Others” to this film, was there any added pressure in having such big-name actors attached? Von Donnersmarck : I always feel, at the end of the day, the director is one of those many people hiding behind the cameras. I think the spotlight always should be on the actors. The actors I had on “The Lives of Others” were, maybe not so known so much in America, but in Europe and in Germany they were very well-known. I don’t feel that it was that different in that aspect. It was very different genre-wise and just the feel of the film, but that was part of the fun for me. I feel it’s more fun to try out something completely different, and after you’ve done something more heavy, to do something light and breezy, it was almost a kind of self-therapy there. MTV : What do you think will resonate most with audiences? Von Donnersmarck : I think that they’ll love just seeing a world where somehow everything is beautiful, not so much in a way that seems unrealistic. All of the things we show in the film could happen like they do in the film and could look the way they do, but even if there’s a scene with 500 extras, every single extra will have been designed and sculpted by the most fantastic designers that Hollywood and Italy have to offer, so I hope people will feel transported into a world that is as beautiful as it could be, that’s what I was aiming for. Most of all, I just hope they will be transformed by — as I was on the set — by the incredible chemistry and the joy and love between our marvelous actors, between Angie and Johnny, and Paul and Timothy Dalton and Steven Berkhoff, all the incredible actors that we had. From the saucy Jessica Alba in “Little Fockers” to James Franco’s grueling journey in “127 Hours,” the MTV Movies team is delving into the hottest flicks of fall 2010. Check back daily for exclusive clips, photos and interviews with the films’ biggest stars. Linkin Park’s A Thousand Suns: Kid A, All Grown Up?

Bigger Than the Sound sees parallels between LP’s ambitious new effort and Radiohead’s seminal album, also a departure when released 10 years ago. By James Montgomery Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda Photo: Flanigan/ FilmMagic According to legend, in August of 2000, a group of clearly terrified Capitol Records executives were outfitted with headphones, loaded into a series of unmarked vans and driven down the Pacific Coast Highway, where they listened to Radiohead’s Kid A for the first time. It was an inspired — not to mention particularly apt — premiere for the album, and though the whole thing is rather apocryphal, it certainly made for nice copy at the time. I only mention that because in August of 2010, a clearly relaxed Warner Bros. publicist sat me down in her office and allowed me one of the first listens to Linkin Park’s A Thousand Suns. There were no headphones or unmarked vans or winding, windswept vistas — budgetary cuts, one can only assume — just an iced coffee and a notepad, which was sort of a shame, because if ever there was an album that deserves the Radiohead treatment, it’s this one. Since, as you’ll probably discover in the coming weeks, A Thousand Suns is most definitely Linkin Park’s Kid A. Well, maybe not technically, but, at the very least, spiritually. Like Kid A, Suns is an album of great ambition and equally great scope, a fearless effort that takes the band to places they’ve never been: darker and doomier places, louder and (in sections) heavier places too. Like Kid A, it is so completely different from the band’s previous efforts that it will almost certainly stand as the line of demarcation between everything that came before and everything that will come after. And, much like Kid A, there just aren’t a whole lot of guitars on it. Instead, A Thousand Suns is washed in ominous electronics, jarring percussion and an unshakeable, unyielding post-millennial tension. The latter is nothing new for the band — their 2007 Minutes to Midnight dealt, in parts, with the politics of George W. Bush and the tragedy of Katrina — but here, they’ve steeped the entire album in a thick coat of dread. It’s a transition underscored in the repeated refrain of “God bless us every one/ We’re a broken people living under loaded gun,” first heard in opening number “The Requiem” and then later on in lead single “The Catalyst.” And in moments like the beginning of “When They Come for Me,” when chirping crickets are gradually drowned out by the sound of artillery, or, most notably, in the use of recorded, world-weary speeches by scientist Robert Oppenheimer, political activist Mario Savio and Martin Luther King Jr. Each of the speeches are appropriately monolithic — Oppenheimer’s famous quoting of the Bhagavad Gita after the first testing of the atomic bomb in 1945, Savio’s terrifyingly prescient “bodies upon the gears” screed in 1964, King’s 1967 lament that the horrors of modern life “cannot be reconciled with wisdom, justice and love” — and it’s telling that they all come from the last millennium. Because, really what A Thousand Suns (which takes its name from Oppenheimer’s speech) is trying to say is that none of these problems, these terrors or these specters that haunt us in 2010 are particularly new. Quite the opposite, in fact. We’ve just chosen to ignore the warnings. And now it might be too late. And that’s another reason it reminds me so much of Kid A. But that’s where the similarities between the albums end. Because rather than hide their fears in a claustrophobic din (as Radiohead did), Linkin Park make the conscious decision to rage against them. They’re not willing to go down without a fight, and it’s in those moments — the massive roar of “Waiting for the End,” the thunderous, squealing “Blackout” (Chester Bennington’s best moment on the album) and the muscle-bound might of “Wretches and Kings” — that the album truly soars. And it bears mentioning that for all its mechanized morose, there are some decidedly uplifting moments too. Most notable among them is “Iridescent,” which starts with just a piano line, then slowly heads skyward on interlocking guitars (they do in fact exist on the album) and explodes in a rousing chorus of “Remember all the sadness and frustration/ And let go.” It all ends with an acoustic-based number, “The Messenger,” which features Bennington going full-bore and culminates in this lyric: “When life leaves us blind/ Loves keeps us kind.” And perhaps that’s the real message of the album, that no matter how far gone things may be, humanity isn’t beyond saving. What separates man from machine is our capacity to love, and despite all evidence to the contrary, there are still things worth believing in. All of that may seem crazy, but Linkin Park seem just insane enough to buy into it. And they want you to as well. After all, at this point, it’s about all we have left. So while A Thousand Suns may be dark, sprawling, discordant, ambitious and an all-out game changer, Kid A it’s not. This one’s optimistic. Linkin Park are performing at the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, which will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Kanye West May Be Filming ‘Movie Companion’ To Album

Rapper has been tweeting about shooting in Prague. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West Photo: Dominique Charriau/ WireImage Kanye West is in a creative groove right now, finishing his own album, doing a remix for Justin Bieber and announcing plans for a joint LP with Jay-Z . In addition to all his musical ventures, the rapper is working on a “movie companion” to his upcoming album, a source with knowledge of the project told MTV News. Photos from the set appeared on blogs on Wednesday (September 1). The images do not appear to be from any particular scene, though, as West looks to be in between takes from filming; one image shows West walking over to a waiting deer. “On set of the movie,” ‘Ye wrote in a Twitter message last week. “This doe just refuses to sit still. … I told the deer … ‘what would Bambi do?’ & she looked at me like I was crazy.” The rapper has been writing messages via Twitter about his overseas adventures, particularly about details surrounding the shoot. “Last day in Prague,” he wrote late last week. “We’ve shot some good stuff so far … really good … NO! I mean REALLY GOOD! “Just wrapped for the day,” he continued later. “Been shooting 16 hour days. … I’m so excited. … It’s like a child’s delusions become reality!” A representative for West did not respond to a request for comment from MTV News. It’s unclear as of press time which director is attached to the project and whether the film will be bundled with West’s forthcoming album. His last album, 808s & Heartbreaks, featured a Spike Jonze-directed short, “We Were Once a Fairytale,” inspired by the track “See You in My Nightmares” featuring Lil Wayne. The movie was an iTunes only release. Related Photos What Has Kanye West Been Up To This Past Year? The Inspiration For Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Video Related Artists Kanye West

T.I. Releasing ‘Pledge Allegiance To The Swag’ To ‘The Streets’ This Week

‘Don’t look for it on radio, but online and in the streets and in the clubs,’ rapper says. By Shaheem Reid T.I. Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ Getty Images T.I. has only gone Hollywood when it comes to films, not his music. Tinseltown’s current box-office champ says we can expect a brand-new record from his King Uncaged LP this week. He’s going to growing it from the ground up. “My next song … I’m not even sending it to radio first,” he explained Monday. “I’m going to work it from the streets to the clubs. Then as DJs ask about it, I’ll deliver it to them. I’m gonna go all the way back to grassroots. I feel that people right now feel I’m going so far over their heads, given my prior success with Paper Trail. They feel like I’m trying to leave my foundation and my demographic behind, which is far from my intention.” The King of the South’s new song should land in the next couple of days or so. “Probably this week — don’t look for it on radio, but online and in the streets and in the clubs, you can look forward to a record. A record called ‘Pledge Allegiance to the Swag,’ he added. “I’m just trying to feed the streets right now.” And the Net. Tip has a slew of viral videos dropping soon with his various Grand Hustle acts. “We just shot three videos,” T.I. said. “We just shot the Young Dro ‘Freeze Me’ video with me, him and Gucci Mane. We shot the ‘Get Your Girl’ video with me and my artist and lil’ cousin, Rich Kid Shawty [Rashad]. We shot that in Atlanta. We also shot the video for ‘Ya Hear Me?’ Those videos will be completed and surfacing online within the next week or so.” Over the weekend, T.I.’s latest film, “Takers,” grabbed the top spot in a tooth-and-nail dogfight for number one with “The Last Exorcism.” As he told us a few weeks ago, with the film being a success, a prequel to the action thriller is very likely. “I just got off the phone with the director and the writer of ‘Takers,’ he revealed. “Also with the heads of Screen Gems. We’re working on not a sequel, but the prequel to ‘Takers,’ telling how the guys came to meet one another and how the relationships developed. Pretty much telling the story before [my character] went [to jail].” Related Artists T.I.

Hey Monday Say ‘The Show Must Go On’

‘Quitting a band you’re not happy being a part of can’t really wait,’ HM’s Cassadee Pope says of departed bassist Jersey Moriarty. By James Montgomery Hey Monday Photo: MTV News Last week, Hey Monday sent their fanbase into a panic when they announced that they were parting ways with beloved bassist Jersey Moriarty. They went to great lengths to assure fans that the split was amicable, writing on their blog , “this is in no way, shape or form a bitter break between us,” a sentiment Moriarty echoed on his own blog . Still, both bandmates and departing bassist seemed to admit that a change was needed. On the surface, there was nothing particularly new about this news. Bands part ways with bassists on a fairly regular basis, after all, but word of Jersey’s departure came exactly one month after HM frontwoman Cassadee Pope took to the band’s blog to announce — somewhat dejectedly — that their much-anticipated sophomore album, Beneath It All, was being pared down to just an EP. “I wish we had known that the full-length would be coming a little later before telling everyone about it, but there’s nothing we can do about it now,” Pope wrote. So, within the span of one month, the band lost an album and a bass player … which sort of raises a bigger question: What, exactly, is going on with Hey Monday? On Monday, Pope sat down with MTV News to give us an answer. “It’s really, really hectic, but it’s a good hectic,” she said of where things are right now. “With the whole Jersey thing, that really sucked and we were upset about it, but we were more upset about losing a friend, and we never really sat down and were worried about ‘Oh my God, is this the end of the band?’ Because the three of us [Pope, Mike Gentile and Alex Lipshaw] are so passionate about it, and we’ve talked about it a million times, about how this is our dream come true, and not to say any of us could quit tomorrow — you never know. But no one has to worry, the show must go on, and we’re really excited and nothing’s going to stop us. “The album thing, that’s just a case of me loving to write,” she continued. “And since we have some months to spare, [we thought], ‘Why not go and try to write songs that are better than the songs we have right now?’ We love the album, but if I can go in and write some ones that are better, why not? We want it to be the best album possible.” Pope said that Hey Monday are now aiming to have their second full-length in stores by March, and in the meantime, they’ve recruited Gentile’s brother to fill in for Moriarty on bass for the upcoming tour. Things are very much full-steam ahead, even if, over the last month, the band has learned to take things one day at a time. Especially since, when Moriarty decided to leave the band, they were already well into the promo cycle for their EP. “It was a little bit of a surprise, just because the record was about to come out, and we had done all the promo shots, we had finished everything. The timing was definitely the worst timing in the entire world, but something like quitting a band that you’re not happy being a part of can’t really wait,” Pope said. “You have to do it when you need to, and, you know, he made it very clear that this isn’t what he wants to do and, although we think this lifestyle is extremely easy and fun, to him maybe it was different, and he just wanted to go home and live a normal life.” In keeping with the tone of her earlier announcement, Pope maintained that Hey Monday have no ill will toward Moriarty … quite the opposite, in fact. “He’s probably going to continue writing his own music, and maybe that was another thing too, because I do most of the writing and he’s also a writer and maybe that wasn’t sitting well with him,” she said. “There’s a lot of reasons that we all talked about that we think had a lot to do with him leaving, but it’s not a bitter thing at all, we keep in touch and we’ll make sure that he’s doing okay.” Are you sad to hear Hey Monday and bassist Jersey have parted ways? Tell us your thoughts in the comments. Related Artists Hey Monday
