Tupac Biopic Gains Oscar-Winning Screenwriters

Stephen J. Rivele and Chris Wilkinson have signed on to write script about Death Row superstar’s final years. By Jayson Rodriguez Tupac Shakur Photo: Steve Granitz/ Wireimage Antoine Fuqua’s forthcoming Tupac Shakur biopic will soon have a script: Two Oscar-nominated writers, Stephen J. Rivele and Chris Wilkinson, have been tapped to write the screenplay. The scribes, whose writing credits include “Nixon” and “Ali,” told New York magazine that the film will focus on the late rapper’s final day, with flashbacks of the preceding four years of his life interspersed throughout. Rivele added that the script centers on their perception that Shakur was miscast in the hip-hop world in which he found himself. “It became clear that he was essentially a 19th-century Romantic poet who found himself in the 21st century,” he explained. “He was a really sensitive, very romantic, talented young poet who also could sing, dance, and act. But the realities [of the hip-hop music business] were that he had to create this persona of the gangster.” The film is tentatively slated to begin production later this year, according to the magazine. Fuqua has previously said he hopes to find a newcomer to play Tupac . “I want to go to the streets and find him anywhere he might be in the world,” the director said. In addition to a fresh face, filmmakers intend to offer a new take on the life of the fallen rap star, who was murdered in 1996. Rivele explained that the movie won’t aim to resolve who murdered Shakur, but rather focus on who he was and the person he attempted to be. The movie will push a thesis slanted more toward asking why anyone would have wanted to kill the talented superstar. “He was obviously very angry, and had been subjected to a great deal of violence at home, in the streets and in prison,” Rivele said. “But he was just beginning to shed that anger and look for a purer voice. … He was in the process of changing himself and entering a new phase of his life — essentially a Romantic vision — and had set up a new label and a new production company to create it. He saw the contradiction between the musical persona of ‘Thug Life,’ and his essential nature as a gentle, sensitive person. And that was partly responsible for his murder: He was not a gangster, but the people around him were. They saw he was going to leave, that they were going to lose him, and so I think they decided to kill him.” Who would you cast to play Tupac in a biopic? By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage Justin Bieber may have canceled his show Sunday (August 29) night after being struck down by an illness , but he’s bounced back and is ready to headline a show in New York. The VMA-nominated teen star tweeted that he has been cleared by his doctors to perform on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden, where he will film part of his upcoming 3-D movie. “Ok the doctor said we aren’t 100 percent but we are ready to ROcK!! Rehearsals tonight were incredible…got off to a rocky start because wasnt feeling right but then after lunch kicked in. 2morrow at MSG!! Thanks to everyone who came to help today…this movie is coming together.” Fans in attendance on Tuesday will get the chance to be a part of his 3-D movie, which made Bieber seem genuinely excited. “2morrow let’s fill the streets of NYC with Purple and even if you dont have tix we will b celebratin n maybe u might just find ur way inside,” he wrote. “Tomorrow is a celebration….we are living a dream and playing MADISON SQUARE GARDEN in NYC!! Earlier this month, the film’s director, Jon Chu, spoke to MTV News about the flick. “[It’s] a movie for his fans, a movie for people who don’t know him, and we’re gonna tell the underdog story of where he came from,” he explained. “Because it’s a really fascinating story and it has a lot to do with our sort of digital lifestyle now. He was able to do what corporations try to do now when they use YouTube and they don’t even know what to do with it yet. It’s a pretty cool story for our time.” Related Photos Justin Bieber’s ‘My World’ Tour Hits Los Angeles Related Artists Justin Bieber

T.I. Salutes Fans For Making ‘Takers’ #1

‘I appreciate the people for showing up and judging for themselves,’ he tells MTV News. By Shaheem Reid T.I. in “Takers” Photo: Columbia Pictures While early estimates had “The Last Exorcism” edging out “Takers” at the box office this weekend, T.I. says not so fast. According to a recalculated tally on BoxOfficeMojo.com , his heist film, also starring Idris Elba and Chris Brown, came out on top, grossing $20.5 million vs. the horror movie’s $20.3 million. “It was so tight, they kinda misinformed people prematurely and gave out the wrong information,” Tip said about the initial numbers. “But officially, as it stands right now, ‘Takers’ is the #1 movie in the country, contrary to popular belief. In my heart, I felt it would be. “Its kinda like the Obama election,” Tip continued. “Not at all as important, but you felt like it was supposed to happen … unless it was some bullsh– in the game, it would likely happen. I’m not in any way trying to compare the magnitude of importance [of the presidential election] to this [box-office] situation, but I’m just trying to somewhat rate my anticipation. Thanks to everyone that supported. Critics were very quick to sign up and criticize the film. I appreciate the people for showing up and judging for themselves. And tweeting and putting out the word of mouth that this really was a good film.” Tip did more than his share to promote the film this weekend. On Friday, he was in Atlanta treating his hometown fans to the flick, and then he headed to the Midwest on Sunday to do the same. “All weekend I been out,” he said. “If I went and the line was packed, I bought all the tickets. Everybody inside who had already bought the tickets, I bought the concessions — popcorn, candy, slushees, sodas. I did that in Atlanta on Friday and Saturday. Sunday, I was in Mount Pleasant [Michigan] with [Ludacris for a concert]. … I went before the concert and took pictures and signed autographs for everyone who bought tickets. And after the show, I went in after the movie theater had closed. They remained open so they could show the film, man. At 11:30 or 11:55. That allowed us to have two more sold-out shows. I appreciate all the people who supported. It was really the energy. The energy surrounding the project was unmatched. “We were in less theaters, we were in smaller theaters [than ‘The Last Exorcism’],” Tip said about the obstacles for “Takers.” “They were in theaters that held 350 and 400. We were in theaters that held 150 and 185, 225. We had a stronger per-screen average, which means all of the screens that we were viewed on and showed on, we had more sold-out shows than they did. It was more people in line for ‘Takers’ than it was for that movie. It didn’t matter how many more screens than us they were on. It kept it close, but they couldn’t bring out the victory, simply because the people demanded it. The quality of [‘Takers’] spoke volumes of what the people wanted to have in the #1 slot.” After the film’s successful debut weekend, Tip was on the phone Monday morning (August 30) with the filmmakers about getting a “Takers” prequel greenlit. Musically, he’s dropping a song in the next few days called “I Pledge Allegiance to the Swag.” Did you check out “Takers” this weekend? Share your reviews in the comments! ‘The Last Exorcism’ Leads The Way At The Box Office

‘Takers,’ starring T.I. and Hayden Christensen, lands at #2 for the weekend. By Adam Rosenberg Ashley Bell in “The Last Exorcism” Photo: Lionsgate It was a close weekend race at the box office, but in the end the powers of evil overtook the powers of, well, less evil. The Eli Roth-produced, Daniel Stamm-directed horror mockumentary “The Last Exorcism” took the #1 position this weekend with $21.3 million in ticket sales spread out over 2,874 screens. Trailing only slightly behind in the #2 position was the heist flick “Takers,” with a take of $21 million from 2,206 screens. Even though it emerged on top, “Exorcism” is a bigger winner than it seems to be. While no budget has been reported, the single camera format, absence of big stars and minimal special effects couldn’t have driven the film’s cost very high. Even factoring in marketing — which has been largely focused online with viral campaigns like — a $20+ million box office take is a considerable win. “Takers,” by comparison, boasts a star-studded ensemble that draws from both Hollywood and the music biz. Chris Brown and T.I. star alongside Hayden Christensen, Idris Elba, Matt Dillon and Zoe Saldana in a crime drama about a high-level, high-stakes bank robbery. The film’s budget is reported to hover around $20 million. It’s a sharp dip after that for positions three through five, which are filled by movies that came out earlier in August. The action throwback “The Expendables” came in at #3 with $9.5 million, slightly more than half of what it earned last week. Still, with a total gross of roughly $82 million — more than double its reported budget — in just 17 days, the Sylvester Stallone-directed/written/starring flick is no small success. Spots four and five went to a pair of Sony releases, “Eat Pray Love” and “The Other Guys,” which brought in $7 million and $6.6 million, respectively. The surprise for the weekend was the theatrical re-release of “Avatar.” Opening on roughly 800 screens with the benefit of 3-D and an added nine minutes of footage, the movie only managed to pull in $4 million, good enough for a #12 spot on the weekend list. Huffington Poster Offers $100,000 for Nonexistent Glenn Beck Sex Tape

A Huffington Post contributor and former editor of the failed liberal radio network Air America is offering $100,000 for a nonexistent sex tape featuring Glenn Beck. “Rupert Murdoch and the Koch brothers are happy to throw money at the rising tide of right wing lunacy,” wrote Beau Friedlander Monday. “Breitbart offered $100,000 for JournoList, the email listserve that brought down WaPo blogger Dave Weigel this June,” he continued. “Why did they do it?” he asked. His answer was as offensive as his despicable offer (h/t @MelissaTweets aka Melissa Clouthier): Because they stand to make a lot of money off the anti-black president movement, and they are rich enough to imprint their beliefs on the American sheeple.  The bio for this miscreant reads : Beau Friedlander is a writer living in Brooklyn. He was the editor-in-chief of Air America until it closed in 2010, and is the former publisher of Context Books, an award-winning small press. He is currently working on a book proposal called The Bunker Mentality, which takes on the conservative movement with lessons learned from his time at Air America, and as the publisher of War on Iraq: What Team Bush Doesn’t Want You To Know by former UNSCOM inspector Scott Ritter and William Rivers Pitt. His work can be found in the Los Angeles Times, The Paris Review, and other publications. His piece predictably went after “Tea Baggers”: In cultural terms, the original neoconservatives who birthed the baggers were way more frightened by the Broadway musical “Hair” than the film “Rosemary’s Baby” (both from 1968). A mock ad might go like this: “Afraid your daughter might hook up with a black guy (or the nation may choose one to be president)? Have a problem with that homosexual and or promiscuous son or daughter? Does your son need a haircut? Do you often find biblical characters charred into your toast? Then do we have the movement for you!”  Then, to the typical liberal attack on Beck: Glenn Beck is also a Mormon. It matters. His religion typifies the noble lie that the neocons originally set out to defend against the counterculture–Archie Bunker’s America–where a woman’s place was in the home and with baby, and an African American’s place was in a ghetto. (Mormons revere women much like Hindis do the cow, and they didn’t accept African Americans in their ranks at all till 1978–draw whatever inferences you like). It is time to pop the tea baggers’ favorite balloon (so what if it will be replaced by another?), and with that in mind I hereby offer to negotiate a $100,000 payday to the person who will come forward with a sex tape or phone records or anything else that succeeds in removing Glenn Beck from the public eye forever. I am not offering the cash myself, but I will broker the deal and/or raise the money for what you bring to the table. (And it better be good.) If you have the goods, or if you want to contribute to a slush fund to buy more takedowns (probably not tax deductible), please contact me at: glennbecksextape@gmail.com. Welcome to modern day liberalism: if you can’t beat ’em, smear ’em!

Bow Wow Wants To Become An ‘Artist’s Artist’ With Greenlight 3

‘I’ve accomplished more than a lot of cats in hip-hop who get that recognition,’ Bow tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Bow Wow Photo: MTV News Monday’s Main Pick Street Star : Bow Wow Holding It Down For : Cash Money Mixtape : Greenlight 3 Real Spit : Bow Wow’s Greenlight 3 has a yellow light for now. Bow definitely plans to put it out, but he’s delaying it for a couple of weeks. He wanted to let his film “Lottery Ticket” breathe before he dropped his new project. “It’s important for me to do the Greenlight mixtape, because the fans want it. Where I got the title, the whole Greenlight title came from Jermaine [Dupri],” Bow explained. “He was gonna name his album Greenlight. I asked him: ‘What you gonna do with it?’ I took it and ran with it and created a brand. G1 set the tone. G2, I told you, it did a million downloads in a day. I never knew it was gonna be like that. I didn’t know if it’s me signing to Cash Money or because it was free. This is the third one, and it’s the last one. And it’s gonna complete the series. ” Greenlight 3 has 12 original records. It’s gonna sound like a brand-new album,” he added. “It’s easy to take a verse and put it on whatever’s hot. To make songs, that’s what a lot of artists or MCs have a hard time with. Making records. I did it this time for it to be original, because you see what’s going on with Chris [Brown] and the ‘Deuces’ record. That’s off the mixtape, what you think is off an album. I did that intentionally, because I could probably have three singles — which I do. I feel like I got three singles off the G3. G3 is to prepare people of what’s to come from the album.” Joints to Check For

Lindsay Lohan Tweets For First Time Since Rehab

Actress blasts paparazzi in her return to Twitter. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lindsay Lohan Photo: Dave McNew/ Getty Images After a fairly rough summer, Lindsay Lohan is getting back into the swing of things. The actress, who left rehab Tuesday after spending 23 days in court-ordered treatment, has returned to Twitter . In her first tweet as a free woman, Lohan targeted some familiar foes: paparazzi. “Clearly.. Paparazzi shouldn’t be allowed to take pictures or video while someone’s driving or at a stop light. 4every1’s sake #trafficpolice,” the starlet tweeted Thursday (August 26). Just like her constantly changing hair color and shenanigans behind the wheel, Lohan’s run-ins with photogs have marked her years in an unrelenting spotlight. A car crash that Lohan claimed was the fault of an overzealous snapper partly inspired a California law aimed at cracking down on eager paparazzi. In her return to the social-networking site, Lohan appears to have revisited her tradition of oversharing and antagonizing others via the Web. The actress’ turbulent relationship with ex-girlfriend Samantha Ronson played out in front of millions of viral fans, with both ladies typing swipes at each other. More recently, bawdy comedienne Joan Rivers went after Lohan on Twitter before the actress began her stint in jail. Lohan has also blasted her publicity-hungry father, Michael, on the site as well. Even if Lohan has taken up her viral antics once again, many have hope the actress can bounce back from her recent troubles. “I feel like people in the film industry are rooting for her,” film critic Ryan Gilbey recently told MTV News . “[Director Quentin] Tarantino has been saying great, supportive things about her and how brilliant she’s in this movie he’s produced [‘Machete’].” Indeed, her “Machete” co-stars have been beaming about Lohan’s performance in the flick. “I wish her all the best. I mean, she’s a talented young actress,” Cheech Marin told MTV News at the film’s premiere. “Hopefully, she won’t let her personal life overwhelm her professional life. … At some point, you gotta be responsible.” “She’s so good in this movie,” Jessica Alba added of “Machete.” “I can’t wait for people to see [her in] it.” Are you happy Lindsay Lohan is tweeting again?
