CEO Killed at Gay Cruising Spot

Credit Union of Atlanta CEO DeFarra Gaymon was shot and killed by a police officer in Newark, New Jersey last week after allegedly propositioning the officer at a gay cruising area. Gaymon stopped by the Branch Brook Park area while en route to his 30th high school reunion. The neighborhood is known for attracting sexual activity and male prostitutes, according to a report in The New York Times. According to Essex County prosecutor Robert D. Laurino, the 29-year-old officer, whose name hasn’t been released, claims he fired in self-defense. He says when he attempted to arrest Gaymon for lewd behavior, he ran and, when cornered, tried to disarm the officer. The officer shot Gaymon once. He died three hours later at nearby University Hospital. added by: TimALoftis

VIDEO Pete Seeger & Mark Ruffalo Protest Oil & Gas Industry

Folk music icon Pete Seeger and actor Mark Ruffalo joined elected officials and environmental advocates in Albany, NY on Tuesday to warn that a new method of gas extraction is destructive, unpredictable, and a threat to public health. Ruffalo, a Sullivan County resident who recently appeared in the film The Kids Are Alright, held up a jar of water from a Pennsylvania town where the method of hydraulic fracturing (or hydro-fracking, for short) has contaminated the water supply. He warned that New Yorkers could suffer the same fate unless the state legislature takes action in the coming days. Seeger, a longtime environmental activist, composed a song about fracking for the event highlighting the similarities between natural gas extraction and oil drilling: “And when 'drill baby drill' turns to 'spill baby spill,' God’s counting on me – God's counting on you.” Hydro-fracking is a dirty, dangerous method of extracting gas from underground rock by drilling a well in the rock and then pumping thousands of gallons of a toxic soup of chemicals into the rock to create fissures that release the gas trapped inside. Many companies are seeking to ramp up gas production by starting hydro-fracking operations in NY state this year. Hydro-fracking has contaminated water across the country from Pennsylvania to Colorado and its effects are the subject of the new documentary GASLAND. NY's Dept of Environmental Conservation holds the authority to grant permits to oil and gas companies. The Dept has stated that it plans to allow hydro-fracking to begin despite pressure from a massive grassroots campaign has been waged across the state to “kill the drill.” One grassroots organization that has decided to fight the oil and gas industry on hydro-fracking on the national level is Frack Action. www.FrackAction.org added by: captainplanet71

Are Selena Gomez And Joey King The Real-Life Ramona And Beezus?

‘I’m not really comfortable in my skin as much as Beezus is,’ Gomez tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Perri Nemiroff Selena Gomez Photo: MTV News When “Ramona and Beezus” opens Friday, moviegoers might be wondering how much Selena Gomez and Joey King are like their onscreen personalities. And, as it turns out, there’s a bit of Ramona and Beezus in both of them. “I’m not really comfortable in my skin as much as Beezus is, but I do try to do my best in school,” Gomez told MTV News about her character in the film, which also stars “Sex and the City” alumni Bridget Moynahan and John Corbett . “I have a huge imagination, like Ramona, [and] a big personality, but there’s some similarities and some differences between me and Ramona as well,” 10-year-old King added. Gomez has said that King became like a real-life sister to her during filming. “Even when they stopped, when they would say ‘cut,’ we would still just be as loud and talking. We all got along really well,” Gomez said about how “inseparable” she’s become with King . “Pretty much, we talk all the time. She’s like my sister, and I never had a sibling, so she’s as close as I’ve got.” So does that make Gomez the real-life Beezus to King’s Ramona, based on the characters from the beloved Beverly Cleary books? “She’s still the Ramona,” Gomez said. “I go to her for advice, if anything.” “We both have different traits from each character,” King said. “She’s like Ramona in some ways and same for me.” Are you excited to see “Ramona and Beezus” this weekend? Vanessa Hudgens Says ‘Sucker Punch’ Would Be ‘So Badass’ In 3-D

‘Having my tomahawk fly towards your face, [it would be] just too cool,’ she tells MTV News of Zack Snyder flick. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Tim Kash Vanessa Hudgens Photo: MTV News Vanessa Hudgens’ upcoming film roles are definite departures from her squeaky-clean work in “High School Musical” — particularly in the upcoming action-thriller “Sucker Punch,” directed by “300” helmer Zack Snyder. When MTV News recently caught up with the young star, she revealed just how different the role really is. Hint: She’s traded singing for slinging bullets. Although the film will present at Comic-Con this weekend, Hudgens said it is far from completion. “It’s probably, definitely not done,” she said. “There’s so much CGI in it, it’s ridiculous.” Regarding the film joining in on the popular 3-D trend, Hudgens was enthusiastic about “Sucker Punch” going that route. “It would be so badass,” she said. “It’s already really badass, but having it in 3-D … having my tomahawk fly towards your face, [it would be] just too cool, you know?” Speaking of badass, Hudgens continued to cite the gun-slinging as her favorite aspect of filming. “Shooting a .50-cal [machine gun], there’s nothing like it,” she said with a smile. Hudgens added that she and her female castmates (including Jena Malone, Abbie Cornish and Emily Browning) found a new sense of empowerment with their gun-wielding skills. “I think all of us girls loved it so much. We’re all strong individuals, and when you give us a gun … you kind of unleash something.” Hudgens is also excited for fans to see a sneak peek of footage, which will premiere at Comic-Con in San Diego. “I’m going for the first time, and I’m so excited!” she exclaimed. “I want to go dress up in a mask or paint my face so I can walk around in the crowd.” Most of all, Hudgens can’t wait to see the first clip from the film, which is slated to premiere Saturday. “I’m really excited [for fans to see it]. There’s this beast that’s been unleashed with all of this. … I’m a lot tougher, stronger, badass — I don’t want to sound cocky, but it’s cool.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Sucker Punch.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Zac Efron And Vanessa Hudgens Call Release-Date Shuffle ‘Disappointing’

Efron’s ‘Charlie St. Cloud’ took over the weekend originally held by Hudgens’ ‘Beastly.’ By Kara Warner, with additional reporting by Tim Kash Zac Efron Photo: MTV News It goes without saying that the inner workings of the film business are a mystery to most of those on the outside looking in. Sometimes, even the individuals closest to the projects are left in the dark — particularly with regard to movie release dates. Such is the case with Zac Efron’s “Charlie St. Cloud” moving into the release date previously held by girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens’ “Beastly.” When MTV News caught up with Efron to talk about “St. Cloud,” we asked him what he thought of his film taking over the “Beastly” weekend. “It was disappointing,” Efron said. “It was hard. I actually had to break the news to her. I was like, ‘I think we are moving on to your date.’ … She took it really well, but it’s hard when that kind of stuff happens. We don’t, as actors, have any control over it, so we’ll see. I mean, hopefully it will work out for the best. ‘Beastly’ is a great movie, and when it does come out, people are absolutely going to love it.” In talking to MTV News about her film being pushed to March 2011, Hudgens was equally diplomatic. “I just didn’t feel right about us having movies coming out on the same day,” she said. “It’s just not right.” It could have been fun for a little friendly competition, though. “True,” Hudgens admitted, “but, I don’t know, I just don’t think it’s fair to either of us.” She added that the delay has given filmmakers the time to perfect the film. “We’re actually going to be doing some re-shoots and changing it up a bit, so hopefully we’ll make it that much better.” What do you think of the release-date shuffle? Are you glad you won’t have to decide between “St. Cloud” and “Beastly”? Let us know in the comments! Related Photos ‘Beastly’

Ryan Reynolds’ ‘Green Lantern’ Costume Revealed

DC Comics superhero makes his glowing debut on Entertainment Weekly. By Eric Ditzian Ryan Reynolds on the July 16 cover of Entertainment Weekly Photo: Entertainment Weekly For Ryan Reynolds, the most professionally satisfying moment of 2009 was the first time he saw the Green Lantern costume he’d be rocking for the upcoming big screen adaptation of the classic DC Comics superhero. “It was a moment when I was like, ‘This is happening, and it’s happening in the right way,’ ” Reynolds told MTV News last fall. “That’s a pretty cool, definitive moment for me.” Now the rest of us are getting a chance to see the costume that blew Reynolds’ mind. Entertainment Weekly has debuted a first look at the Green Lantern — and his test-pilot alter ego, Hal Jordan — who will be gracing multiplexes in the summer of 2011. The cover image shows Reynolds in familiar Lantern garb, complete with green mask, glowing green suit and iconic power ring, which can bring into existence nearly anything Hal can imagine. “Will and imagination are his superpowers,” said Reynolds, who reportedly injured his shoulder on the “Green Lantern” set earlier this week. “We need a circus of Timothy Learys to think of things Hal would invent with his ring.” Though experienced in the action movie realm, from “Blade: Trinity” to “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” Reynolds confessed that nothing could prepare him for the wire-work involved in the “Green Lantern” shoot, which required him to fly through the air at up to 60 feet per second to simulate the illusion of real flight. “The first time you do it, you’re seriously considering an adult diaper,” Reynolds said. Directed by Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale”) and co-starring Tim Robbins, Blake Lively, Mark Strong and Peter Sarsgaard, the movie is set to hit theaters on June 17, 2011. In MTV News’ earlier conversation with Reynolds, he heaped praise on Campbell’s vision for the film. “When you have a guy like Martin Campbell, part of his charm is that he has ba–s of titanium, and the other part is that he’s slightly crazy, and you have to be to take on something with the scope of ‘Green Lantern,’ ” he said. “I sat down with him, and I could not even believe what he was saying. When I went to the meeting, I was entirely cynical. I thought, ‘What the hell, I’ll see what they have to say,’ and I left the room with a completely different perspective.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Green Lantern.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
