Red Tails Director Reveals Release Date

Suddenly, the dormant George Lucas-produced Red Tails — an actioner about the Tuskegee Airmen — is back on the slate: Director Anthony Hemingway revealed on Twitter that the movie will hit theaters in January 2012. That’s not official yet, per se, but it’s enough to get me excited for the Cuba Gooding Jr. Comeback Tour! (The cast also includes Terrence Howard, Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, Tristan Wilds, Method Man, Lee Tergesen, Ne-Yo, Elijah Kelley, Andre Royo and Jesse Williams.) [ indieWIRE ]

Shia LaBeouf Explains Why Megan Fox Wasn’t Cut Out For the Transformers Franchise in 5 Questionable Quotes

And now, an exercise in interview hole digging by Transformers: Dark of the Moon star Shia LaBeouf. While speaking with the Los Angeles Times recently, the actor tried his best to explain why Megan Fox didn’t fit in on Michael Bay’s set. What resulted was an uncomfortable feature with no less than three quotes from LaBeouf, that, like Michael Bay’s directing style, could be construed as offensive and sexist. Take it away, Shia…

Zoolander 2 Could Still Happen

Ben Stiller is optimistic about Zoolander 2 getting made, even a decade after the original film premiered. In a press conference for his indie Submarine , Stiller said that he is still waiting for Paramount to approve the sequel’s script — which features Derek (Stiller) and Hansel (Owen Wilson) 10 years later living in Europe, where they are no longer relevant. “It’s kind of coming along slowly. We’re raring to go, not quite sure where the studio’s at. Hopefully it’ll come together.” [ The Playlist ]

Sarah Palin Movie Coming Soon to Theater, Presidential Campaign Near You

For a while now, Sarah Palin has been the X-factor in the quest for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012. The former Alaska governor has a few hurdles to clear before officially declaring her candidacy — not the least of which is her abdication of her office in 2009 with more than a year left in her term, which raised concerns in the GOP about her ability to lead and/or follow through. But! That’s nothing a pro-Palin documentary — made with her cooperation and debuting next month — shouldn’t be able to fix.

Despite Kung Fu Panda 2, Female Animation Directors Are Few and Far Between

In this age of director-as-personality — witness Todd Phillips’ hilariously brash interview tactics as the most recent example of this phenomenon — it’s rare that a blockbuster hits theaters with someone anonymous behind the camera. Which is what makes the release of Kung Fu Panda 2 so extraordinaire. Despite being the sequel to one of the bigger animations hits of the last five years, precious little has been written about its director, Jennifer Yuh Nelson. Though that might have more to do with her gender than anything else.

SNL Scorecard: Where the Hell Was Ed Helms?

It’s apparent that there are certain Saturday Night Live hosts whom the show really has no idea how to use — Elton John is a good example from earlier this season. Then there’s the strange case of Ed Helms: For whatever reason, the show decided to pretty much ignore the fact that Helms was host altogether.

CANNES REVIEW: Satiny Black-and-White Silent The Artist Emerges as a Palme d’Or Frontrunner

In a curious but pleasant development, a latecomer to the Cannes competition lineup, announced just a week before the festival began, has suddenly become a possible front-runner for the Palme d’Or. Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist, a silent film shot in Hollywood in black-and-white, screened this morning, and its sly charms seemed to win over a sizable portion of the audience — including me.
