Irish boy band easily defeated Jonas Brothers in the championship matchup. By Christina Garibaldi Westlife Photo: Getty Images The fans have spoken. After two weeks of intense matchups and more than 12 million votes, Westlife have come out on top in MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands . The Irish boy band easily defeated the in the final round, with more than 70 percent of the final vote. It was a hard-fought finale with both bands’ fanbases tirelessly voting in the hopes of giving their band the championship, but in the end, the international firepower of Westlife was too much for JoBros fans to handle. Westlife may not have been favored to win this competition, but from day one they proved they were fighters and were out to make a statement. They got everyone’s attention early on when, amidst accusations of cheating, they fairly beat out fan favorites the Backstreet Boys in the first round. They had no trouble at all beating out their next two opponents, O-Town and the Beatles, and managed to get past newcomers the Wanted in the Final Four to ultimately take on the Jonas Brothers in the championship. This win in the Battle of the Boy Bands seems to come at a perfect time for the group because their 14-year career is about to come to an end. Westlife have decided to go their separate ways after the conclusion of their Greatest Hits Tour, which kicks off later this week and wraps up at the end of June in front of a hometown crowd in Dublin, Ireland. Congratulations to Westlife and to all their extremely loyal fans: You have certainly proved your devotion and didn’t let up no matter how tough the competition was. Thanks to all the bands that participated. From newcomers One Direction, Mindless Behavior and Big Time Rush to veteran groups Boyz II Men and the Backstreet Boys , it was truly an epic tournament. But it wouldn’t have been possible without all of you, the fans. All of your vigorous voting resulted in some shocking upsets , some heated matchups and some rally-from-behind wins, making this a true battle of the boy bands. Chris Pine Leaves Action For Drama In ‘People Like Us’

‘I was interested in doing a film that was smaller scope than the films I had done previously,’ actor tells MTV News. By Kevin P. Sullivan Olivia Wilde and Chris Pine in “People Like Us” Photo: DreamWorks Pictures Chris Pine and first-time director Alex Kurtzman have a few things in common. Both made names for themselves with large action movies like J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” and “Transformers” (Kurtzman as a writer and producer), and the upcoming film ” People Like Us ” marks a distinct change for both men. “People Like Us” is the story of a young man who falls on hard financial times just as he learns that his recently deceased father has left a small fortune to a sister he doesn’t know. MTV News spoke with Pine about the change of pace for him and what it was like working with co-star Elizabeth Banks. MTV News : What was it that attracted you to the script originally? Chris Pine : What attracted me to the film was just the quality of the writing. I was really interested in doing a film that was smaller scope than the films that I had done previously in the past couple years. This one was an intimate family drama, and I thought even the anomalous experience of someone finding out that their father had a completely separate family, everybody’s got family dramas of their own. Certainly, though I can’t relate to that specific experience, I can relate to having stuff in the family. This one takes place in the moment where all the stuff that’s been brewing for years and years and years finally comes to a head and has to be dealt with. MTV : How does making the film’s central relationship a brother-sister one affect the overall movie? Pine : Clearly it’s going to progress in a way that can’t be a love story between a sister and brother. It is in a sense that these two people get to know one another and find that they love one another because they’re the only two people that can relate and understand the experience of living in that family with that father and that mother. And because they’ve been so traumatized by the lies that their family has told for so many years, they find solace in one another’s mutual understanding. I think it’s refreshing because I don’t think people have seen something like this specific story in cinema before, at least in the States. There’s a quality of the film that kind of reminded me of one of my favorite films, “Kramer vs. Kramer,” and it kind of has the depth of something like “Ordinary People” and the humor of a comedy. It’s just — for the lack of a better term — very human. MTV : Did it strike you as interesting that the film lacks the central romance that drives most dramas? Pine : Not really because there are many stories in your own life that you lead that have nothing to do with a romantic other, whether it be work or dealing with your family. Oftentimes, many of the most pivotal stories that we play out in our own life don’t have anything to do with a girlfriend or a lover or a husband or a wife. That didn’t pose a problem for me because I thought that this was a story more about a man really becoming an authentic adult and learning how to deal honestly with those people in his life, his father and his mother and his girlfriend and his newfound sister. MTV : With the relationship with Elizabeth Banks’ character being so central, what was your relationship with her like on set? Pine : It was a pretty intense filmmaking experience. We had a lot of fun on set, and I love Elizabeth to death. She’s incredibly smart and doesn’t suffer fools. I appreciated her work ethic and just shooting the sh– on set. It was a film that demanded a lot of our attention and a lot of protecting our respective characters. I felt very protective of Sam. The piece, as it progresses forward, clearly because of the lies Sam tells along the way, there’s a lot of resentment from Elizabeth’s character. There were times when we would have these blowout discussions on set among Alex, myself and Elizabeth about what we felt the scene needed to be in the context of the arc of our characters. MTV : Alex Kurtzman has said in the past how important this movie was to him. Was there a sense of that on the set? Pine : From what Alex told me, this is a very important story that was very important for him to tell, and we both bonded over the fact that our careers had taken a particular path toward making larger films, while in our beginnings, we both thought we’d be making different kinds of films. It was nice to finally make one that we both really, really had a lot of investment in. Not that I don’t have investment in the films I do now — I’m saying it was nice to do something that we always wanted to make. I think it is exciting that Alex gets to show his fans that he is capable of doing a different kind of film entirely. The Band Drummer Levon Helm In Final Stages of Cancer Battle

‘Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life so filled with joy and celebration,’ reads a message on Helm’s website. By Gil Kaufman Levon Helm Photo: Getty Images Levon Helm, former drummer for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group the Band, announced on Tuesday that he is in the final stages of a long-running battle with cancer. Helm, 71, whose signature Southern drawl helped make iconic songs such as “The Weight,” “Up on Cripple Creek” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” rock classics, was first diagnosed with cancer in 1998. “Levon is in the final stages of his battle with cancer. Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey,” read a note from his daughter Amy and wife Sandy . “Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life so filled with joy and celebration … he has loved nothing more than to play, to fill the room up with music, lay down the back beat, and make the people dance! He did it every time he took the stage…
” After his initial diagnosis with throat cancer, Helm struggled to regain his voice and pay spiraling medical bills. Though he initially lost his ability to sing, Helm continued to play drums, mandolin and harmonica alongside daughter Amy in a series of shows at his Woodstock, New York, studios called the Midnight Ramble. Since 2004, the shows have grown in legend, attracting everyone from Elvis Costello and Norah Jones to My Morning Jacket, Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris. The weekly concerts attracted sold-out audiences that not only helped pay the bills, but also kick-started Helm’s recording career and produced the back-to-back Grammy-winning albums Dirt Farmer and Electric Dirt . Born on May 26, 1940, Helm grew up in a musical home and was plucked by rocker Ronnie Hawkins to join his band in 1957. It was during his stint with Hawkins that he was united with four other musicians who would make up the core of the Band: Richard Manuel, Rick Danko, Robbie Robertson and Garth Hudson. They eventually split with Hawkins and in 1965 hooked up with Bob Dylan to help the folk icon transition into an electric sound. The Band went on to release a string of rock classics and broke up in 1976 after an all-star Thanksgiving concert at the Winterland ballroom in San Francisco that was filmed by Martin Scorsese and released as “The Last Waltz.” Related Artists The Band

Too Little, Too Late: Burger King Issues An Apology For Targeting Black People With Coonerific Chicken Wrap Ad

Burger King is getting grilled for a Web only spot that has black consumers condemning the commercial across the Internet . The ad features Mary J. Blige shucking and jiving about the wonders of BK’s new crispy chicken wraps: The reaction, to the Blige spot from African-American Web sites and bloggers may have setback any attempt to get more black consumers to patronize the chain. The commercial was produced by Burger King’s recently hired general market ad agency, Mother. Initial criticism came from black sites like Madame Noir, whose writer, Renay Alize, called the commercial “buffoonery.” Blige defended herself from attacks by saying she never saw or approved the final creative execution. “I agreed to be a part of a fun and creative campaign that was supposed to feature a dream sequence,” said the singer in a statement. “Unfortunately, that’s not what was happening in that clip, so I understand my fans being upset by what they saw. But, if you’re a Mary fan, you have to know I would never allow an unfinished spot like the one you saw to go out.” Burger King pulled the spot but said that its removal was due to licensing concerns, not public reaction. In a statement the company said, “We would like to apologize to Mary J. and all of her fans for airing an ad that was not final. We know how important Mary J. is to her fans, and we are currently in the process of finalizing the commercial. We hope to have the final ad on the air soon.” Ironically, Burger King has, for the last year, been in the process of hiring an African-American advertising agency to craft its message for black consumers. While the company has said that it expected to have a decision earlier this year, any assignment given to a black ad shop now will come with the burden of un-doing the damage created by the Mother ad agency. According to industry figures, black consumers spend about $1.1 billion with Burger King. Burger King’s ad spending in black-oriented media — about $6 million annually — has been declining in recent years, trails spending by competitors McDonald’s, KFC, and Wendy’s. Sorry BK, it’s too little, too damn late. This goes for all other companies who want to go after the African American dollar, stop the coonin’ and bafoonin’ because we aren’t buying it! ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Results: Jack Wagner Booted

Former soap star is second celebrity to be eliminated this season. By Kelley L. Carter Jack Wagner on “Dancing With the Stars” Photo: ABC True to reality-TV form, fans had to wait until the final seconds of Tuesday night’s “Dancing With the Stars” to learn which celebrity would be going home in the second round of eliminations on ABC’s big hit. Host Tom Bergeron joked that he hoped they’d be able to name who was heading home before the show ended, given that there were literally only seconds left and three remaining couples. In the end, there was enough time to announce the winner and get a quick soundbite, but unlike Monday night’s emotional performances, there wasn’t enough time for tears. On Tuesday night’s results show, the final two came down to pop singer Gavin DeGraw and his pro partner Karina Smirnoff and former soap star Jack Wagner and his partner Anna Trebunskaya. Wagner and Trebunskaya were given the boot. Wagner kept his cool when his name was called, saying it was an honor to be able to perform this season and share some of his story. “It was a great time, and I had a great time,” he said. “It was fun to kind of test myself. Thanks to the judges. I appreciated it.” The judges told him his performance was his best of the season so far. On Monday night, he scored 24 points out of 30 for his samba in celebration of meeting his 23-year-old long-lost daughter in 2011. Do you agree with Jack Wagner’s elimination? Sound off below!
