MTV’s Musical March Madness Final Four Preview: Muse

British rockers take on My Chemical Romance after pounding the White Stripes. By James Montgomery Muse Photo: Warner/Getty Images/MTV News Who : Champions of the Midwest region in MTV’s Musical March Madness tournament , Muse roll into the Final Four with a whole lot of momentum at their British backs, having knocked off a murderers’ row of rock-radio heavies just to make it to this point. Sort of a stripped-down version of Michigan’s famed Fab Five (since, you know, there are only three of them), Muse mauled the competition with a game that’s equal parts finesse and pound-n-ground, highlighted by the fleet-fingered shredding and multi-octave range of guitarist/frontman Matthew Bellamy and the pummeling, precise combo of drummer Dominic Howard and bassist Christopher Wolstenholme, perhaps the best frontcourt in the tourney. How They Got Here : Muse faced perhaps the toughest road to the Final Four, entering the tournament as a #2 seed, then facing a baptism of fire in their first round matchup against seasoned vets the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Muse eeked out a 51-49 victory, but things didn’t get any easier from there, as they were pitted against rock-radio brutes Breaking Benjamin in the round of 32. They won a tightly contested 53-47 battle, then advanced to the Sweet 16, where they took down upset-minded AFI by the same score. Their easiest matchup came in the Elite Eight, where they pounded the fourth-seeded White Stripes , perhaps showing that they’re rounding into top form at precisely the right time. The Outlook : Like we said, Muse are hitting their stride, and they’ll make for a tough out in the Final Four. They command a rather ginormous international fanbase, and, after years of grinding it out, they’ve finally broken through stateside, too. Last year’s The Resistance debuted at #3 on the Billboard albums chart (their highest U.S. bow ever), selling an impressive 128,000 copies, and their song “Uprising” is a rock-radio mainstay, having hung around on the charts for 34 weeks now. Plus, after besting the likes of the Chili Peppers and AFI, Muse are battle tested, which means we wouldn’t bet against them at this point. The only downside? They’ll go up against My Chemical Romance in the Final Four, which might prove to be too tough a matchup for even the mighty men of Muse. Throughout the day, we’ll be breaking down the four bands still standing in MTV’s Musical March Madness tournament. Voting on the Final Four opens Friday on the Newsroom blog and runs until Sunday night. Related Photos MTV News’ Band Bracketology Who Will Win MTV’s Musical March Madness?! Related Artists Muse

MTV’s Musical March Madness Reaches The Elite Eight

My Chemical Romance outlast 30 Seconds to Mars, in Bigger Than the Sound ‘s bracketology! By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic When historians look back on MTV News’ inaugural Musical March Madness tournament, they will undoubtedly focus on the Sweet 16 matchup between My Chemical Romance and 30 Seconds to Mars (well, either that or Linkin Park ‘s rather erroneous omission from the entire field of 65). It was, to borrow a few catchphrases, a clash of the titans, a barn-burner, a good old-fashioned slobberknocker: Two of the biggest bands on the planet — with two of the most rabid fanbases, the MCRmy and the Echelon — squaring off for a spot in the Elite Eight. It was like Duke/ North Carolina, Ohio State/ Michigan, Israel University/ Palestine Tech, only bloodier, more venomous. It was a match for the ages. Votes poured in by the bucket load. Both bands led for extended periods of time, fell behind, then surged into the lead again, thanks to some rather creative campaigning (30STM imploring fans to vote from their school’s computer labs was a genius touch,) and, perhaps fittingly, when voting closed on Tuesday night, things were tied, with each act grabbing 50 percent of the vote. So, who won? Well, in a contest where more than 50,000 ballots were cast, it came down to just 327 votes, and in the end, My Chem moved on to the Elite Eight. I’m not gonna lie, we’ll miss 30 Seconds to Mars and their fanatic, somewhat insane dedication to winning a fictional championship. But the fans have spoken, and Leto and company will have to wait until next year. So, who will be joining My Chemical Romance in the Elite Eight? You can take a look at our updated bracket here , and voting will open Wednesday afternoon (March 31) over on the Newsroom blog . Let’s get to the results. Midwest In a region highlighted by shocking upsets (#16 the Hold Steady besting #1 Nickelback, #11 Shinedown over #6 Cobra Starship), we’re left with a pretty straightforward final: second-seeded Muse versus fourth-seeded the White Stripes. Both bands handled their Sweet 16 opponents with relative ease — the Stripes thumped Patrick Stump, and Muse rallied to knock off a game AFI — but only one can advance to the Final Four. Who Will Win MTV’s Musical March Madness?! The results: (4) The White Stripes def. (9) Patrick Stump, 70-30 (2) Muse def. (14) AFI, 53-47 So, once again, our final in the Midwest region is #2 Muse v. #4 the White Stripes. To be honest, I’m sort of amazed the Stripes have made it this far. I didn’t think Jack White even knew how to use a computer. West The Wild West continued to live up to its nickname, as it played host to both the MCR/30STM tilt and #14 the Young Veins vs. #15 Panic! at the Disco, a matchup that pitted former bandmates against one another. Sadly — perhaps due to Ryan Ross’ refusal to campaign on behalf of his band — Panic! rolled past the Veins, setting up a final of two bands that haven’t released much new music in recent years but whose fans don’t seem to mind. The results: (5) My Chemical Romance def. (9) 30 Seconds To Mars, 50-50 (OT, MCR won on total votes) (15) Panic! at the Disco def. (14) The Young Veins, 85-15 The West region final is #5 My Chemical Romance v. #15 Panic! at the Disco. Can the Panic! boys’ dream run continue on to the Final Four? Or will MCR continue to flex their muscles? It’s up to you. East I suppose it had to come down to this: 16th-seeded Tokio Hotel, who entered the tournament merely as an afterthought, roll on to the Elite Eight, after finally putting away a testy Vampire Weekend. (True story, VW frontman Ezra Koenig totally tweeted at me to complain about his band’s matchup.) They’ll face off against Owl City, who pasted MGMT. Both bands’ fanatical fanbases will need to up their efforts leading up to the Final Four. The results: (16) Tokio Hotel def. (4) Vampire Weekend, 63-37 (3) Owl City def. (7) MGMT, 62-38 So, our East region final pits #3 Owl City against #16 Tokio Hotel. Surely the Internet will buckle beneath the weight of the vote. South The region that refuses to make any sense reaches perhaps the most (il)logical conclusion possible: #13 Alice in Chains — who outlasted Adam Lambert — going up against #15 Coheed and Cambria, who topped heavily favored Phish. Coheed seem to care about this tournament more than any band left in the field, so I suppose it’s hard to bet against them at this point. The results: (13) Alice in Chains def. (9) Adam Lambert, 65-35 (15) Coheed and Cambria def. (6) Phish, 56-44 The South final is #13 Alice in Chains v. #15 Coheed and Cambria. Someone’s got to win, right? Once again, Elite Eight voting opens Wednesday afternoon and runs until Thursday night over on the Newsroom blog. Vote early, vote often, and perhaps you can help your favorite band advance to the Final Four! Who do you think will take home the Musical March Madness championship? Are you as surprised as we are by the results? Talk about it here! Related Photos MTV News’ Band Bracketology Who Will Win MTV’s Musical March Madness?! Kentucky vs West Virginia: Battle of the Top 2

Only one region in this year’s NCAA Tournament has gone chalk and that’s the East, where No. 1 Kentucky will face No. 2 West Virginia on Saturday night in Syracuse for a trip to the Final Four. Other than a bit of a slow start, Kentucky (35-2, 20-15 ATS) didn’t have much trouble with Cornell on Thursday night in a 62-45 victory. The Cats have yet to have a game this tournament that was decided by less than the 17 points they beat Cornell by. Kentucky hasn’t been in the Final Four since winning its last national title in 1998. West Virginia (30-6, 16-19 ATS) didn’t miss injured starting point guard Darryl “Truck” Bryant too much in its 69-56 over Washington on Thursday (it will Saturday). Kevin Jones stepped up with star Da’Sean Butler having an off night, with Jones scoring 18 points with eight rebounds. WVU committed an uncharacteristic 23 turnovers with different guys now handling the ball – the Mountaineers entered averaging just 11.6 turnovers per game. It was the first time West Virginia had committed more than 20 turnovers in a game this season. If WVU’s turnover problems show up again and Butler doesn’t come up big against Kentucky, then WVU is toast. But the Mountaineers also are playing terrific on defense, not having allowed a team to score 60 points since the end of the regular season. WVU is 13-0 this season when holding a foe under 60. This is the fourth time a Bob Huggins-coached team has reached the Elite Eight, with Hugs going 1-2 in the previous three. Saturday’s game could well come down to rebounding. WVU, which is second in the nation in offensive rebounding, killed Washington on boards and is 25-3 this year when outrebounding its opponent. But with Patrick Patterson, DeMarcus Cousins and Daniel Orton, among others, Kentucky is a very good rebounding team and will have the size advantage in the frontcourt. Surely, this will be an exciting match that will rival the anticipated watching of the UFC 111 live stream that night. We wish both team good luck. ‘Hills’ Fans Want Lauren Conrad Back, Speidi Breakup In Final Season

Fans agree that Heidi ‘can do a lot better’ than Spencer; ‘The Hills: Final Season’ premieres April 27 on MTV. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Joel Hanek Lauren Conrad Photo: Getty Images While Kristin Cavallari and Lo Bosworth have weighed in on what they want to see happen in the final season of “The Hills,” premiering April 27, it seems that fans have two very specific ideas for what they want to see in the final 12 episodes: Lauren Conrad needs to return, and Speidi need to break up. “I’d like to see more drama between the castmembers and new locations,” Shelby told MTV News, with her friend Julia adding, “I’d also like to see Heidi and Lauren. … If they’re friends anymore or if they, like, get into a big, huge catfight.” It seems that getting LC to return is pretty high on most “Hills” fans’ wish lists. “I would like to see Lauren come back on the show,” Ally said. “She’s my favorite. She’s so cute and pretty and sweet. That’s pretty much all I would really, really want to happen.” Olivia added: “I’d still like to know what she’s up to.” And while a lot of fans want LC back, other fans want Speidi to go their separate ways. “Heidi and Spencer [should] break up,” Holly and her pal Charity agreed. “I don’t really like it. She can do better.” Meredith explained why she’d like to see the show’s most infamous pair call it quits: “I think Heidi and Spencer should break up because he’s a jerk.” “I think she can do a lot better,” Erin added. “I think he’s making her do a lot of bad things.” Chantelle had the perfect way to make all the fans happy: “Lauren needs to come back and maybe have a little affair with Spencer,” she proposed. What do you want to see happen in the final season of “The Hills”? Should LC come back? Should Speidi part ways? Tell us in the comments! “The Hills: Final Season” premieres April 27 at 10 p.m. ET/PT followed by “The City” at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
