Southern California Wildfire Prompts Evacuation According to CNN A Southern California wildfire grew from 10 acres to more than 6,500 acres in a mere five hours Thursday, prompting the evacuation of homes and the campus of California State University Channel Islands, officials said. Winds reaching 25 mph aided the Springs Fire in Ventura County, and weather conditions grounded fixed-wing air tankers, allowing only helicopters to drop water, fire officials said. The blaze was 0% contained Thursday evening, officials said. Meanwhile, authorities late Thursday afternoon reopened a nine-mile leg of California’s scenic Pacific Coast Highway just north of Malibu, the California Highway Patrol said. The patrol had shut it down for a few hours as the fire threatened to approach the coast. That affected portions of the highway that runs between the ocean and the Santa Monica Mountains. The fire was one of two wildfires that firefighters were battling in the Los Angeles area. The other one was east of the city in Riverside County. The Ventura County blaze prompted the evacuation of homes in Newbury Park, fire authorities said. More than 850 fire and law personnel were assigned to the growing conflagration that began near Camarillo, where Cal State Channel Islands is located. The university campus will remain closed through Friday, the school said. Equipment included 96 fire engines, six helicopters and three fixed-wing aircraft, authorities said. In the evacuated Dos Vientos neighborhood, firefighters took a preventive posture beside million-dollar, Spanish mission style houses with red tile roofs. Mother Charged After 4 Children Die In Mobile Home Fire A 21-year-old woman whose four young children died from inhaling smoke during a mobile home fire that occurred while they were left alone has now been charged with homicide and neglect in connection with their deaths. via USA Today A 21-year-old mother of four whose children died in a mobile home fire was charged Friday in connection with their deaths. Darlington County sheriff’s deputies arrested Hope Hawkins of Hartsville, S.C., on Thursday, a day after her children ages 10 months to 4 years old were found dead from smoke inhalation in a closet in a bedroom after her kitchen caught fire. She did not arrive at home until firefighters arrived at the scene and put out the fire, investigators said. It took firefighters less than 10 minutes to put out the fire. Hawkins was first charged with one count of unlawful neglect of a child Thursday. Hours later, Sheriff Wayne Byrd added three more counts totaling four counts of homicide by child abuse. Sisters Myasia and Kynasia Hawkins, 10 months; and their brothers, Camaron Mason, 2, and Delonta Dixon, 4, died Wednesday. This is so heartbreaking….these poor children. Via NYDailyNews A man identified by employees as a former maintenance worker opened fire Tuesday inside a Detroit medical facility, sending workers and visitors screaming and rushing for the doors just moments before the building erupted in flames. Crews digging through the gutted Park Medical Centers building hours after the fire recovered the remains of a man and a woman, Detroit police said Tuesday night in a release. Authorities did not release the identities of the dead, pending autopsies, but police had been searching for 35-year-old medical assistant Sharita Williams and the fired maintenance worker, who relatives said was her ex-boyfriend. Williams’ mother, Antha Williams-Hill, told The Associated Press that one of her daughter’s co-workers told her that the man threatened her daughter inside. “He said, ‘You think I’m playing with you?’” Williams-Hill said. “He told the other girl, ‘I think you better get out of here.’ The girl left and said she then heard two shots.” Last week, Sharita Williams was granted a personal protection order against the man, according to Wayne County Court records. Williams-Hill said two days earlier, someone had emailed her sexually explicit photos of her daughter that also were posted on Facebook. The text accompanying the photos read: “How do you like Sharita’s new boyfriend?” her mother said. Dr. Stuart Kirschenbaum, a podiatrist who operated his private practice from the building for about 30 years, said he heard a security guard yell that the gunman “had taken Sharita and is shooting at other people in the building.” Destroyed in the blaze, Kirschenbaum said, was his collection of boxing gloves, personal letters and photos of boxing great Joe Louis. He estimated the memorabilia were worth about $100,000. Dwane Blackmon, Detroit police homicide inspector, declined to identify the maintenance man as the suspect but said everyone else inside except the woman and male suspect appeared to have escaped the blaze. Investigators were unable to quickly go deep into the one-story building, described by tenants as also having a basement, due to fears of the structure’s integrity. Williams-Hill said she was asked to go to the coroner’s office to identify whether the deceased woman was her daughter “because of the condition of the body.” She said her daughter had been dating the married maintenance man for more than a year, but their relationship was rocky and Sharita eventually began seeing someone else and even moved out of the city and into a Detroit suburb to get away. However, he refused to leave her alone, Williams-Hill said. Police and arson investigators on Tuesday interviewed people who worked in the building and relatives of Sharita Williams and the maintenance man. Other presenters include Steve Carell, Melissa McCarthy, Zac Efron, Kerry Washington, and Amanda Seyfried, as well as the casts of This Is the End , Grown Ups 2, and Star Trek Into Darkness . Rebel Wilson will host the ceremony, which will be televised live on April 14.
Suffice it to say, Shakira and Usher on The Voice works. NBC’s singing competition hit is pulling off a rare feat, increasing its ratings since the Season 4 premiere, with a switched-up judging panel to boot! Adam Levine and Blake Shelton are still holding it (and throwing it) down, but the show has not been dinged by the hiatus of Christina and Cee Lo. Three weeks in, The Voice is up 4 percent from the previous cycle, hitting a season high 13.7 million viewers and a 4.9 rating among adults 18-49 last night. The show still could tank as we head deeper into spring, but it certainly doesn’t look like it. In fact, Usher and Shakira are re-igniting the fire if anything. The Florida crazies strike again… Woman Torches Kitchen Hoping To ‘Go In A Blaze Of Glory’ A married Florida woman who beat her husband over the head with a picture frame before attempting to burn down her kitchen has been charged with Arson and Domestic Battery. via Huffington Post A Florida woman is accused of attacking her husband, then attempting to burn down her kitchen in an attempt to go “out in a blaze of glory.” Michelle Diane Fowler Osteen Bedillion, 46, allegedly hit her husband, Carlos Bedillion in the head with a heavy picture frame around 9 p.m. Sunday in their Dunellon home, according to a news release from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. Carlos Bedillion, also 46, called police. His wife then allegedly threw a computer printer and hit him in the back. The man fled the house and told police that from outside, he could see his wife pour cooking oil all over the kitchen before setting it on fire. He ran back inside and put the fire out, and Michelle Bedillion ran out of the house and into some nearby woods. When deputies found her later on, they say she told them that her husband “deserved whatever he got.” When they asked why she started a fire, she said, “I was going out in a blaze of glory.” Michelle Bedillion was charged with domestic battery and arson. Bikram Choudhury – the founder of a type of popular type of Yoga – is being sued by Sarah Baughn, a former student of the icon, for sexual discrimination and harassment. The lawsuit alleges that Bikram made numerous unwanted advances against Baughn and that she “fought him off when he sexually assaulted her.” She claims she was subsequently “punished and threatened” for her actions. Baughn – who has won many competitive Yoga championships – has included Bikram’s wife Rajashree (the president of USA Yoga, the organization that governs competitive Yoga) and Bikram’s Yoga College of India, because its staff repeatedly pushed her to keep quiet about their boss’ behavior. Baughn also claims that she was not Choudhury’s only victim. Her lawsuit details how the entire Bikram community has been forced to keep quit regarding their mentor’s behavior, writing as an odd example: “Some of the women were chosen to brush his hair and massage his body,” She adds that two other female Yoga champions slept with Bikram before winning titles. In any case, between this alleged scandal and Lululemon’s see-through yoga pants recall, it’s been quite the month for the wildly popular pastime.
A photo of an Olive Garden receipt – for a free meal given to a family shaken up by a house fire – was shared on Reddit as a simple act of human kindness. Now it’s been picked apart and accused of being a sham. “My brother, wife, 3-year-old daughter and I went to Olive Garden after a recent house fire at my parents,” Reddit user Tanek42 wrote on the site Tuesday. “When the manager asked how everything was, my daughter said, ‘Grandpa’s house burned down.’ We talked for a bit. Here’s how we received the bill.” Total balance due: $0.00. While a few people responded with kudos for the OG manager, many more were skeptical, alleging that this was actually some viral marketing effort. “Why does it say “Duplicate Receipt – Stored Order”? Is this an indication that this is a copy of the receipt, and it may be the manager posting this?” asked one user. Others pointed out that the OG logo was a little too perfectly placed. Before long, the man, or “OP [original poster]” stood accused of working for a company called Grey Worldwide, which is OG’s advertising agency. The image, and the outrage, quickly went viral, prompting Olive Garden’s parent company, Darden, to defend itself and its customers from hoax theories. “The receipt is real and was posted by the guests, not by anyone at Olive Garden or Darden,” said Tara Gray, communication manager for Darden. “We are always looking for ways to surprise and delight guests, and this was one of the ways the Olive Garden team in Vernon Hills, Ill., did that last weekend.” Darden’s marketing firm, Grey Worldwide, also denied any role in it. “Grey had absolutely nothing to do with post concerning Olive Garden,” a representative told Consumerist . “It would be against our code of conduct.” The original poster later chimed in with more details: “At Olive Garden, we were talking to my brother about the fire when the manager stopped by,” he explained. “He asked how everything was and my daughter blurted out ‘Grandpa’s house burned down’. He asked what she just said, and she repeated herself.” “He asked a couple of details like where it happened, when, and if my family had somewhere to stay. I did not expect the bill to get paid, but it was very nice of them!” He laughs at users who still say he’s a marketing maven. “I wish they paid me!” he posted Wednesday afternoon. “I do love Olive Garden, but I don’t work for them.
