‘X-Men: First Class’ Star Calls Prequel ‘Metaphor’ For Real Life

Lucas Till tells MTV News why the flick stands out in a summer stacked with superheroes. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Lucas Till Photo: MTV News During our recent sit-downs with the cast of “X-Men: First Class” — a prequel and the fourth film in the “X-Men” franchise — the talk focused not so much on how the latest installment differs from the first three, but rather what separates “First Class” from all the other superhero-style movies opening this summer. James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender pointed to the film’s universal theme of struggling to fit in, for instance. For their co-star Lucas Till, what makes “First Class” stand out is how fans connect to the unique characters, whereas the competition often relies more on fun to pull in moviegoers. “I feel like the question I wished you would have asked me is, ‘How awesome does this summer look?’ Because you’ve got completely different things,” Till said when we asked what separates his flick from the rest of the pack. “With ‘Captain America,’ you’ve got a 1940s pulp-movie feel, and I feel like that’s going to be its own separate thing; fun and entertaining. And then you’ve got ‘Thor,’ which is, like, a cool ‘He-Man’ episode, which I was thoroughly surprised with. Then you’ve got ‘Green Lantern,’ which I thought was going to be stupid, but kind of looks like a cool cartoon. “This one,” Till continued, returning to “First Class,” “There’s so many metaphors to real life and there’s actual character development. I feel like you care about the characters, then there’s an ensemble cast, which they’re trying to do with ‘Justice League’ and ‘Avengers.’ Till suddenly spouting so many comic-book films both surprised and impressed his “First Class” co-star Rose Byrne. “You’re like a lexicon for superhero movies,” she said with awe. “You really are, you have an intelligent perspective and context for them; I don’t.” At which point their co-star Zo

X-Men: First Class Sequels Could Explore Hippie-Era ’60s, ’70s and ’80s

Everyone seems to love the retro ’60s vibe of Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class . But do we really want to see Professor Xavier, Magneto, and Co. slogging through the not-quite-as-fashionable 1970s and 1980s in potential sequel story lines? (Think hard about this. On the one hand: Magneto in bellbottoms doing lines with Emma Frost at Studio 54. On the other: Dazzler.)

Exclusive: Jennifer Lawrence Officially Cast In ‘Hunger Games’

Author Suzanne Collins gives Oscar-nominated actress her blessing to play Katniss Everdeen. By Kara Warner Jennifer Lawrence Photo: id-pr.com At long last, after seemingly endless debate, speculation and rumors, MTV News has received exclusive confirmation that Jennifer Lawrence has landed the highly coveted role of Katniss Everdeen in the big-screen adaptation of “The Hunger Games.” According to Lionsgate, the 20-year-old actress is a fitting choice due to her “meteoric ascent” to Hollywood stardom with her Oscar-nominated role in “Winter’s Bone,” to be followed by roles in Matthew Vaughn’s “X Men: First Class” and “The Beaver,” directed by Jodie Foster. “Hunger Games” author Suzanne Collins has already given Lawrence’s casting her blessing, via a statement from the studio. “Jennifer’s just an incredible actress,” Collins said. “So powerful, vulnerable, beautiful, unforgiving and brave. I never thought we’d find somebody this perfect for the role. And I can’t wait for everyone to see her play it.” Director Gary Ross also praised his lead actress: “I’m so excited to work with Jen and see her bring this character to life. Katniss requires a young actress with strength, depth, complexity, tenderness, and power. There are very few people alive who can bring that to a role. Jen brings it in spades. She’s going to be an amazing Katniss.” The movie, based on Collins’ dystopian best-seller about children forced to compete in a fight-to-the-death battle, is slated to hit theaters March 23, 2012. [1] I don’t know about you, but when I saw the first trailer [2] for Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class, I went from being cautiously optimistic to unabashedly optimistic.
