While many rappers preferred to talk about gang banging, drug dealing and cop killings, some took a high road to expose the world to the ghettos of America. These rappers probably figured crime doesn’t pay early on, and chose to create lyrical content that encouraged fans in a positive way. Here’s Hip-Hop’s top five songs that prove crime doesn’t pay. Slick Rick “Children’s Story” Uncle Ricky gave us a fairy tale story about a place where “the people wore pajamas and lived life slow,” but things quickly turn when two boys stir up some trouble. Grandmaster Flash “The Message” Grandmaster Flash tries to encourage kids to go to school or “your manhood is took and a may tag.” KRS-One & Friends “Self Destruction” This 1989 song spearheaded the “Stop the Violence” campaign that started in response to the crime/violence infested African-American communities. Outkast “The Art Of Storytellin’” Andre 3000 tells a story of his friend Sasha Thumper, a drug addict/prostitute, who ODs on drugs behind a school building. Nas “I Can” This song was specifically made for the kiddies, with a chant that encourages them to be anything they want to be.

Phonte Coleman is one of the most underrated lyricists making hip-hop today. After a decade of recording as a member of Little Brother and The Foreign Exchange he has finally released his long-overdue solo project, Charity Starts At Home . The 12 track CD features everything fans have come to expect from Tigallo: witty wordplay, heartfelt vocals and lush, heavy-hitting beats. Te is best when he’s writing reality checks drawn on inspiration, so check out some of our favorite lines from the new project. (snippets) “Dance in the Reign” “ Flow so addictive/ it’s like habit forming/flow hair raising/it’s like rabbit farming…/Peter cottontail hoppin over beats and rockin acapells since the days of Akinyells..” The title of the song alone sets up the many double entendres listeners will be treated to throughout the album. He could have stopped at the flip of hair and hare, but he literally and figuratively made it hip-hop by the next bar. “Not Here Anymore” “Y es Phontiga spit/Amazon flame/ watch 9th re-Kindle it/ cuz i-Pad verses with the wisdom of my innocence lost…/ Te is so subtle with this one that you could almost miss it if you’re not reading it. After not speaking for a few years 9th and Te literally rekindled their friendship earlier this year and this 21st century MC redefines a “book of rhymes.” “Everything is falling down” “I made a new lane for myself and said F8ck it/ Why rage against the machine when you could just unplug it?” What’s telling about this project is that he’s put it out independently and has nearly as much buzz (if not more) than any of his releases on major labels. Matrix? What Matrix? “Eternally” No such thing as Te without bars/ that’s like Pixar with no cars/ or seeing a dark-skinned DeBarge. . Point blank, Te raises more bars than Willy Wonka pole vaulting in Rikers. Pause. “Sendin My Love” “But wifey wants a scholar and a traveler/hunter and a gatherer/ and after I capture her now I gotta put my spear up?/” The classic dilemma of any man trained to pursue his woman is that once she’s “caught” the hunter must now change the practices that made him successful in the first place. It’s a d**k thing. “Ball and Chain” “ …when the love flames burn out /now your house lookin Smokey like the teardrops of a clown…” Flipping both the literal ‘smoky’ and Smokey Robinson, Te not only references the classic song “tears of a clown” on this lamentation of marriage, he acknowledges that smoke literally makes you tear up. Word to Andre Rison. “We Go Off” “They say Phonte is the incarnation of verbal murder/ pin it on me like prom night.” No, you missed it. He didn’t just say pin the murder on him. That would be too easy. He’s the in-CARNATION of verbal murder, the damn flower. Pin THAT sh*t on him like it’s prom night or drop it in the casket cuz your career is dead. “These young’s want all of the spoils, but none of the toils/ Got me climbin the walls/ too good to press olives but be the first squeaky wheel lookin for oil…” Phonte, “Who Loves You More” This is a long overdue indictment of the Internet generation raised on instant gratification. Give em a rotary phone and some rabbit ears then see how much hustle they have in em. BONUS: DJ Flash dropped “The Best Of Phonte Mixtape” in advance of the album so here are some of my all time favorite Tigallo lines. “Light It Up” “Got plans to shine /style 3 times dope like eastern standard time…” “On The way” “ Man of all seasons/ used to have a fetish for weed, women and grapes and I like them all seedless” “The Yo Yo” “Deep down you know that I’m right/ man I’m about to kick some Trick Daddy next poetry night like “my Black Queen, don’t know na’an n*gga!” “Life of the Party” We on the same page, we all on one accord/ Little do they know we all came in one Accord “I See Now” Respect game when it comes to my ex things/I keep em in line like rollerblades at the X-Games “Welcome To Durham” You Ain’t Ernie Barnes…/ stop drawin attention” “The Becoming” I target you herbs/On some teleprompter shit I got you watchin ya words/ Te rhymes is real life, yours is so for instance/ taxin these niggas like no dependents/ 12 bar courtrooom drama with no codefendants/ don’t beat it off/ come to your senses… “Lovin It” Ya’ll niggas is borin me/I’m never gon’ change up/please join a sorority go step your game up.” “Sinners” Not a sex therapist lookin for inner peace/ I’mma sex terrorist invadin your middle east” RELATED POSTS: Phonte Feat. Rihanna’s necklace caught the paparazzi’s attention last night when she was spotted leaving one of her favorite restaurants, Giorgio Baldi, in Santa Monica, CA. Though this isn’t the first time her accessory has made a statement, this is certainly the first time we’ve seen the word c*** engraved into a gold plate. Leave it to Rih to always be the (very vulgar) trendsetter. Rihanna Slammed By PETA For Ostrich Feather Outfit Rihanna Wears Rated R Necklace In Front Of Young Fans [PHOTOS]

Film should give ‘Harry Potter’ a run for its money this weekend. By Josh Wigler Chris Evans in “Captain America: The First Avenger” Photo: Paramount Pictures The summer of superheroes rages on this weekend with the theatrical release of “Captain America: The First Avenger.” It’s the final building block audiences need before the full picture of Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers” comes into focus this summer, and by all accounts, the movie does not disappoint. Sporting a fresh rating at review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes , both comic book fans and casual moviegoers alike are feeling the patriotic splendor that Cap has to offer, so “Harry Potter” better watch out: Steve Rogers’ mighty shield could very will split the Boy Who Lived’s wand in half this weekend! Read on for a selection of the “Cap” reviews currently rocking the Web, and check out our own “Captain America” review on Splash Page. And if the star-spangled superhero spirit moves you, give us your own reviews in the comments section below. The Story “It was a pleasure to realize, once ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ got under way, that hey, here is a real movie, not a noisy assembly of incomprehensible special effects. Of course it’s loaded with CGI. It goes without saying it’s preposterous. But it has the texture and takes the care to be a full-blown film. You know, like with a hero we care about and who has some dimension. And with weight to the story. As we plunge ahead into a limitless future of comic-book movies, let this be an inspiration rather than Thor or Green Lantern. ” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times The Hero “As the titular comic book character, Chris Evans has an appealing, earnest quality, whether he’s playing the digitally enhanced (reduced?) scrawny Steve Rogers or the well-muscled super-soldier dubbed Captain America. Evans provides just the right human anchor to the flash and dazzle of director Joe Johnston’s production. The movie wouldn’t work without Evans’ likability and the sense of integrity he projects, as well as his all-American good looks.” — Claudia Puig, USA Today The Villain “Then there’s Hugo Weaving as Captain America’s nemesis, Red Skull — a role that requires delivering a genuine performance from behind grotesque crimson prosthetics, which Weaving accomplishes with admirable dexterity. In fact, everyone hits their marks with energy and finesse in ‘Captain America,’ which with its clean, Art Deco lines and sprightly spirit exemplifies why comic book movies are such reliable fodder for Hollywood. They come pre-storyboarded, after all; their gadgets, dinguses and doo-dads are a production artist’s dream, just as those tights, capes and masks must provide fetishistic frissons for the most on-trend costume designer.” — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post The Action “A chase and shoot-out in a ‘Dick Tracy’ version of New York is one of the most thrilling scenes of the summer movie season, yet this generous film keeps the popcorn popping for two full hours. It’s got musical numbers, as Rogers is costumed as Captain America and sent on a war-bonds tour; it’s got a prison break, as the touring celebrity frees some multicultural P.O.W.s from the Nazis, and it’s got a mythic smackdown, as Captain America squares off against Germanic evil genius Johann Schmidt (the hugely entertaining Hugo Weaving, mimicking documentarian Werner Herzog).” — Joe Williams, St. Louis Post-Dispatch The Setting “Though it begins and ends with a scene or two in the present, as directed by Joe Johnston from a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, ‘Captain America’ is first and foremost an origins story. Almost half of the film’s running time elapses before Rogers gets any kind of power at all, and though its elements are awfully familiar, it’s the most involving part of the film because it takes advantage of Evans’ performance. These early-days sections are so old-fashioned that, if you take away the copious special effects, watching ‘Captain America’ feels akin to watching the venerable 1950s television version of ‘Superman’ starring George Reeves. Buttons are pushed, dials are turned, secret passwords are uttered and lights blink, just like they did way back when.” — Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times Check out everything we’ve got on “Captain America: The First Avenger.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘The images of me still haunt me,’ Rupert Grint tells MTV News of his flash-forward makeup. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” Photo: Warner Bros. Though the story of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” ends with Harry’s battle against Voldemort, the real goodbye to the franchise comes through an epilogue sequence at the end of the movie. It’s a scene MTV has been talking to the cast of the “Harry Potter” films about for many years, especially after the creative heads decided to age the stars using makeup instead of cast a new set of actors. Now that the film is less than 24 hours away from being released, the stars were ready to open up about how they felt about the final “Harry Potter” scene. “With the way it ends, it definitely got balanced right, it was believable, but it was a weird scene to film,” Rupert Grint told MTV News. The actor better known as Ron Weasley had to shoot the epilogue sequence twice after director David Yates decided that the first attempt didn’t work as well. In the scene that is used in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” Ron has gained a pot belly and some stubble, but the first version also featured a serious receding hairline and some unflattering jowls. “The images of me still haunt me,” Grint admitted with a traumatized look on his face. “It was like this monster Donald Trump kind of mixture. It was scary.” His co-star Tom Felton agreed that Grint had not looked particularly attractive the first time, but he wasn’t entirely happy with how his character, Draco Malfoy, turned out either. His real-life girlfriend, Jade Olivia, played his onscreen wife in the sequence and he got to wear a muscle suit — “It was quite cool, I felt quite ripped” — but despite his “lovely goatee” and longer hairstyle, Felton wasn’t entirely satisfied with the results. Unfortunately for the “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” star, he and Olivia “nailed it” the first time, and thus weren’t called back for reshoots. “They were pretty cruel, don’t you think?” Felton asked. “Nineteen years, they were supposed to base it on Jason Isaacs! I look like Jason Isaacs’ dad! I mean, come on.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘See No More’ singer ‘got the reaction right away’ on debut solo single. By Jocelyn Vena Joe Jonas Photo: MTV News Joe Jonas seems to be getting all the support he needs from his fans as he embarks on releasing his solo album, Fast Life , this September. The album will be an intimate look at the inner monologue of the Jonas Brother. While it’s a bit of a scary process going at it without his brothers, he said fan feedback is making the transition a lot easier. “I was really excited,” he told MTV News about hearing fans’ comments. “I love the world we live in where you can know what people are thinking right away.” He added that while much of the response has been positive, he’s also cool with any criticism that might come his way. “I guess you like it and you don’t like it, but I like it because [my single] ‘See No More,’ when it released on iTunes, I got the reaction right away of what people are thinking.” The song’s video also got tons of feedback, but long before the video dropped, it took a little work getting it all together. “The video kind of came together with a concept I had using a house as a metaphor to show destruction of a heart or of the mind,” he explained. “The first director didn’t work out. I kept fighting to find the right treatment.” That right treatment put Joe in an “almost dream world with a house where the house is falling apart, the house is on fire, there’s explosions,” he explained. “And I’m a guy, so I was immediately really excited about that.” So, how does “See No More” co-writer Chris Brown feel about the release? “He’s really pumped for the song and he gave his support, which was really cool,” Jonas said.
